Contest Stats and Discussion - Part 178

I sure as hell won't, I took that pick. Remember, I was the biggest supporter of a widescale Mario boost from the beginning.

Yup, with all of your "Mario's gonna get a boost from Mario 64 DS!!" You used that reasoning for almost every match. I just hope your right, because Mario deserves to win this contest...

Chun-Li can still end up stronger than Bison before it's all said and done. Bowser would be expected to get a tad over 66% on him going by the Villains Contest.

Those are just the voting patterns. We can't really explain them that well. Fighting game fans play stay up late and die during the day?

But there were plenty of people in this topic I was debating with who thought it was completely laughable of me to think that Bison >= Chun-Li. Just totally dismissive of it.

And Bowser's not going to drop too much from here, if he drops at all. He's good during the day and SF2 is best at night.

MasterMage's Tidus Vs. King of All Cosmos analysis:

Well folks, this is about as big an open and shut case as we're going to see. King will undoubtedly be high-end fodder at best, and Tidus has put in some nice matches against Shadow and Ganondorf, so there's really no question about this one OMG WAIT. MARIO GOT A BOOST FROM SM64DS.

Prediction: King of All Cosmos with 67.14%

Ya know, now that I think about it...maybe it's not SF being strong with Europe as it is others who're not strong with Europe. I know SF2 led on SMRPG for awhile in the morning...and I think Ryu/Bison were more dominant in the night than KOS-MOS/Albedo were, too. If memory serves me right, SMRPG and neither Xenogears nor Xenosaga were released in Europe.

I dunno about the rest of SF-related matches, but that might be worth considering.

I was never really worried about it once I chose it. It's just so annoying that it has to balance perfectly so that Snake is stronger than Zelda but weaker than Bowser, who is stronger than Ryu and Tidus, while Tidus manages to still be stronger than Kirby.

Sonic is to Europe what Mario was to Japan and the USA (thus, Europe keeps allowing Sonic Team to think that their games are good... just let the damn series die already before Sonic becomes the next Mega Man), and those guys are pretty hardcore about their Capcom fighting games.

On a related note, this "winning the [...] vote" phrase is overused and horrible. Unless a character is pulling in over 50% of the vote, they aren't winning anything.

They are probably pseudo-favorites bracket. Everything about them is like a prizes bracket except they choose one character to win the entire contest instead of losing when they should.

I need to go to bed, but while it's on my mind, Ulti, you may want to throw in the Black Mage Factor for the Acronyms page. Vivi/DK argues for it and Vivi/Zelda argues against it, but it's definitely been used alot.

Now, I'm goin' to bed...Chun-Li or Protoman, who wins?

Except that "Winning the ____ vote" is stupid and incorrect. You'd think the stats topic of all places wouldn't be on par with the "The percentage for the loser is going up, therefore the loser is coming back" people. That's seriously what the former phrase implies.

That's what it would imply to someone who's not familiar with the term, but pretty much everyone in the stats topic knows what that means, and nobody uses that term outside of here, I don't believe.

That's not what "winning" implies; winning implies getting the majority of the vote, not lowering the percentage, which is why it's technically misused. But the latter concept you criticize is actually true. If the percentage is going up, then obviously that does indicate a comeback of some sort. You have to come back in percentage before coming back in votes. And a shift in percentage indicates momentum; it usually means a systematic shift in voting patterns. You can see all the big comebacks coming long before the trailing party actually starts reducing the gross vote lead.
