Contest Stats and Discussion - Part 178

The only match anyone could consider unconvincing is gannon vs yuna,

I was actually talking about Ness/CJ since that was the closest match that a Nintendo character has been in.

Yeah, considering they were supposed to win all of those matches (except Ness/CJ),

I never recall people saying that Zelda was suppose to win her match. She may have been slightly favored, but Vivi was always considered to be able to win that match too.

So Yuna can make a complete jump to Tidus's 2004 level without any questions, huh?

There's no reason to suspect something is wrong when the amount she went up by was very, very believable.

*points to the BOP*

Zelda was the overwhelming favorite to win that match. She was basically supposed to win.

She's starred in another game since then that sold over a million copies in north america. It's perfectly reasonable to assume it could give her that sort of an increase. It's not like she increase that much.

Just because Yuna became the main character doesn't mean that she all of a sudden be expected to be LIKED the same way other main characters are. She's still Yuna after all. People are putting way too much stock in why a character should be popular over that character's popularity to begin with....

Not being well liked on board 8 doesn't seem to hurt squall, so why would it for Yuna? Becoming the lead in a game does make a difference. She's the only final fanatasy character to be in 2 final fantasy games (unless you're including summons and moogles) as well which should help her. Why does everyone have so much trouble believing this, when Cloud increasing the amount he did being from kingdom heart isn't questioned nearly as much?

What really gets me is that Yuna's increase isn't even very big, especially considering that the last time we saw her was in 2k3.

You just mistook everything I said in my post. Merely being the lead in FFX-2 shouldn't make Yuna boost all the way to Tidus's strength, which is what I was responding to. I didn't say it WOULDN'T help her, but for her to all of a sudden jump among the ranks of the other Final Fantasy leads just FOR being the lead doesn't make much sense. She still is Yuna after all. Again, I say that being the lead isn't everything.

And about Squall not being well liked... it does indeed have an effect on Squall's strength. FF8 came out right after FF7, and sold very well. Squall plays the same kind of role as Cloud. One would think that Squall would be very close to Cloud in strength if "hate" didn't play a factor. The thing is that enough people like Squall for him to be at least fairly strong in the contest.

And if you still think that minor cameos in KH made Cloud and Sephiroth that much more popular in 2k3 even though they were already insanely popular, then I have nothing else to say....

Oh, well that's fair enough, but it's not her being as strong as Tidus, it's that she only got about what, a 4% increase? That isn't exactly huge. We've seen characters get larger increases for more or less no reason within a year, so why couldn't a popular square game do it as well in two years?

And about Squall not being well liked... it does indeed have an effect on Squall's strength. FF8 came out right after FF7, and sold very well. Squall plays the same kind of role as Cloud. He's more then fairly strong, he's sandwitched in between the mid carders and the elite 8. What I'm saying is board hate doesn't translate into hate amongst casuals.

And if you still think that minor cameos in KH made Cloud and Sephiroth that much more popular in 2k3 even though they were already insanely popular, then I have nothing else to say....

I never said that, I said it's more readily accepted for why cloud increased then Yuna being able to increase.

To be fair, the FF leads aren't that exclusive a group. Cloud is top tier, Squall is a legit sweet 16 contender, Tidus is probably in the top 20. However, Ramza isn't strong enough to make it out of the first round, Cecil is a wuss, and I am wondering a bit about what Zidane and Terra's strength will look like (my guess is not so good). So pretty much, I agree with mnm on this one. Besides, we're not sure where Ganondorf stands yet.

I think FFIV in general is just really unpopular in these contests. I don't think FFIV would do any better in a games contest then Cecil did against kirby, which as wrong as it seems looks probable. The problem with Cecil is that we had nothing FFIV related to base him off of, making his strength unpredictable, so we just assumed being in FF equated to not being fodder. We made the same mistake with Kuja, although I suppose we had vivi to base him off of.

I expect zidane to be at least at vivi's strength, and Terra to be at least a bit ahead of Kefka.

Heh, that was the point I was getting at. Being the lead ISN'T all it's cracked up to be. Cloud, Squall, Tidus, and even Crono if you want to add to that all have something about them that is particularly liked. Hmmm... wonder what that is... </sarcasm>

I wouldn't say he got a bad draw. Ramza, in most summer contests, would probably be the kind of guy who would be around 35th place or so. Could make round 2, but given a "fair draw", wouldn't.

What I don't understand is why people are somparing cecil to terra. We hadn't seen anything FFIV in action before, so cecil's strength was hard to predict. We've seen both FFVI and kefka in action before. We know it's popular enough for Terra to not fall below the VFL, and she should be at least at kefka's level in strength. She should be a low end mid carder, and saying she can be stronger then Dante is really stretching it, but trying to compare her to cecil for no reason at all is irrational. It's not like old school square can't be popular. Look at CT, a game that came out closer to FFVI then FFIV. Comparing her to cecil is just as stupid as looking at crono and saying "instant elite 8 breaker".

In other news, Tales of Symphonia has officially busted its way into my top 10 favorite games. Probably up there with Final Fantasy VII in terms of fun factor. I think I'm gonna have to rearrange my top 30 games. Of course, I won't be doing a topic anytime SOON with the big fad going on right now.

But anyways, back on topic....

Lightning in a bottle > Lightning Kick
Knuckles > Magus
