Contest Stats and Discussion - Part 177

who thinks that if chun-li performs a tad better than expected people are gonna go RYU>BOWSER BOOK IT cause this board does do this kind of thing often

Not just that, but if Chun hits over 40% (I'm expecting 38-42% myself) I can see a lot of 'Bowsers doing bad/underperforming' topics popping up as well.
From: Eggplant Lord | Posted: 8/1/2005 1:03:43 PM | Message Detail
After this and Manny Calavera, I think it couldn't be that Snake and Tidus are doing horribly, but rather that so-called cult characters coupled with interesting pics aren't that bad as long as they have fans.

This leads me to think Tidus is still likely to beat Kirby, and Samus is going to dominate the contest.

I'm not sure I'd call Yuri's picture particularly interesting, though. It wasn't bad, but it was not on the level of interest of KoaC or Manny.

I suppose, but I know what happens when someone tries to put too much significance on the pic factor in this topic.

I wouldn't be too nervous if Chun-Li even breaks 45% on Bowser. She's been around just as long as Ryu, has starred in (I think) just as many Street Fighter games, and is almost, if not just as recognizable amongst fans of the series and casuals in general. The only thing she lacks is the contest experience.

And you'd be kidding yourself if you think those five years mean anything. In terms of popularity, the Street Fighter series began with Street Fighter 2.

Ryu starred in... god knows how many games, Chun's always been there beside him, except in the original, but no one cared about that one anyway.

Chun-Li has been in every SF game except the original and the first two SFIII games. The fact that she was added to the third one should testify to her popularity among the fanbase.

As long as she gets over 40% on Bowser tomorrow, I'll be pleased.

"you guys know katamari damacy never made it to Europe, right?"

I was unaware, and actually thought the opposite. When I went to my sister's wedding we had lunch with her and one of her brides maids who lives in London and she was the only person who had played Katamari Damacy (I had just bought myself a copy and was showing it to my new brother-in-law, which is how it got brought up).

I'd still take Cecil over the King. I think everyone here would. Tidus obviously gets anti-voted, and cult characters like the King generally do better against elite characters due to them having a following. heck, I'd vote the King over anyone in this contest.

here's the real question: CATS and the King, who wins?

Here's why I think he is more popular then you are giving him credit for.

- He got a high seeding => lots of nominations

- Look at all the sour users. People like him and are passionate about him doing well.

- Plenty of users will have picked him over Tidus. He is far from a joke character and those less knowledgeable gave him a chance.

- His game has been on the Faq list and will go down as one of the gems of 2005. (or maybe 2004..)

- Since when has poor sales damaged characters in these contests? Look at Lloyd, Vyse and KOS-MOS. While they aren't that strong, they certainly aren't fodder. I would expect the king to be in the same tier as those above.

1. Seeding/Noms =/= contest strength. There are more examples to this rule than exceptions. Terra, who got in practically on the board noms earned an 8th seed. That was from ~100 Noms which is a drop in an ocean of the 100k votes cast every match.

2. It doesn't matter how sour a user is. They still can only vote once. Contest strength is not measured on fervor.

3. Games=/=Contest Strength CJ's game has owned 3 of the top 5 slots on the top 10 yet he's going to fall around the VFL.

4. First off, Lloyd is a weakling. He's slated to fall under the VFL, which is named after Vyse for a reason. He is the level of fodder. Vyse gets quadded+ by only the 2nd strongest characterin the contest. As for KOS-MOS, she is one level up on the toher 2 you named. there is no way King is getting even close to 30% on Ryu.

There. Your argument's been shot. Happy?

I love how people are trying to defend this performance from Tidus.

Face it people. Tidus is going to have the fight of his life against Kirby and then if he wins, he will roll over and die for Bowser/Ryu.

Here is the real question. At this point who would you take:

Zelda or Tidus?

Come on he is a NON PLAYABLE CHARACTER from a cult game that isnt an RPG.

If that doesnt spell disaster, what does?

It doesn't matter what you do or how you do it in a gaem. It doesn't necessarily covnert into contest strength.

All that matters is the numbers, and currently, KoaC is slated to fall severely udner the VFL.

Well, the King is fodder. It's just possible that he's not low end fodder. Tidus/Kirby will tell the story.

Skies of Arcadia's sales numbers are atrocious, even when you put both releases together. Vyse still gets enough support to get about 20% on Link. It's not that difficult to believe the King could be around that level, if not below. Even based on Tidus 2003, he's below Vyse. 18.54% on Link, to be exact, between Conker and Crash Bandicoot.
