There aren't that many sword users in the FF world. Yes, it's more common than any weapon, but it's not like every FF character uses them.

In FFVII, Cloud, Zack, and Sephiroth use them.
In FFVIII, nobody uses them, unless you count Squall's and Seifer's gunblades.
In FFIX, only Steiner uses them (and I seriously doubt he'd be in any sort of FF melee game).
In FFX, you've got Tidus and Auron.

Well, it's just that all the sword characters (save maybe Steiner) would most definitely be put into any FF Melee game.

Then the rest would be using long ranged stuff like guns and spells.
