Contest Stats and Discussion - Part 170
From: sidharta | Posted: 7/26/2005 6:30:35 PM | Message Detail
Judging from the boards reaction, its gonna be pandemonium if Vivi beats Zelda on Thursday.

I don't think so.
I'll be surprised, but not quite shocked yet.

I'm sure most of us realize that matches involving chars of similar strength can go either way.

The next match I fear is SMRPG and SF2, of which I have picked SF2. - Ulti

This quote had me loling. I've so got to go to the SMRPG vs Street Fighter thread for the reactions there.

To me, picking who would win the division was the easiest part. I was pretty confident in all of them, though probably less so in SSBM.

Still, I should've done a lot better than I actually did. I made some stupid picks that I really knew weren't going to pay off.

I prefer it when my judgment goes with the character I like better. Then I feel like I'm giving em all of my support. I mean, I picked Tommy Vercetti vs Kefka, and part of me is going to be rooting for TV... even though I really want Kefka to win.

I'll still vote Kefka, though.

I don't get this 'standing there' argument. what are they supposed to be doing, blowing the living crap out of each other? they're always just standing there.

Well, I mean like...here, look at Zero/Ryu.
http://www.gamefaqs.com/shared/sum05/b03.jpg

They're not just standing there. They're all posing and sparring and what not. Vivi and Zelda are just standing there.

It was a jab a Chichiri for implying that pics weren't worthy discussion material for this topic, since they have little to do with stats.

oh, ok.

Nope, not always. The idea was first proposed by Slowflake during the Spring 2004 Contest.

I had no idea how popular SSBM was until that contest. I sucked an incredible amount of ass in that contest; I had Tetris over Zelda and Mario 3 and FF10 over Vice City. ouch.

You wanna know some stupid picks? How about I actually picked Super Metroid over A Link to the Past AND Metroid Prime over The Wind Waker, even though LttP and WW are in my top 5 favorite games. I somehow made myself think that OoT was the only Zelda game that was really popular.

As soon as brackets locked, I KNEW that the Zelda games would win. I didn't even watch the contest after that because I knew I ****ed up with that.

But yeah, after Starcraft/Wind Waker, I didn't get a match wrong until Ness/Jak....

Heh, had I entered, I would've gotten almost everything wrong except for the contest winner.

That's only because I like FF VII.

I picked SM over LttP with blinding bias, as SM was my favourite game at the time. I even knew it had no chance, I just didn't want to see it lose to a game like Link to the Past.

I put too much stock in seeding in Sp2K4...then again it was the first Contest I had predicted.

PS > Contra
SM > LttP
PD > SotN

Those were my three worst picks right there.

Yeah, when I entered my SpC2k4 bracket, I had no idea what it was for. I was actually picking according to my own preferences. Out of pure coincidence, I liked FF7 and StarCraft a lot, so I had them going far. I didn't even notice the seeding and such. ¬____¬;;

I dunno. Some people were surprised by matches I thought were obvious picks, such as Contra beating Phantasy Star, Pong over River City Ransom (which arguably had more whining than ANY match in the contest, including "SFII LOST?!"), and Mario RPG over SFII.

Of course, I had Mario 3 winning the whole thing, but that was probably more due to favoritism than anything else.

AND Metroid Prime over The Wind Waker

If memory serves me correctly, Prime over Wind Waker was one of the more popular upset picks. And besides, nothing can beat my stupidity: my Earthbound over DOOM pick kept me from a three way tie for the lead. Of the four Earthbound related matches I've predicted, I've ****ed up three of them. -__-

Well, my logic for taking Mario RPG to win was that it was the original SFII, not one of the later versions (Like Turbo, which I thought probably would've been more popular). I didn't expect the original itself to be that strong, no matter how "revolutionary" it was.

I was almost going to ask "Wow. You picked the wrong champ and still got 2nd place?" Luckily, I reread that signature.

I didn't even know Doom over EB was that... controversial. I hadn't heard of EB then, and I played Doom a lot, so I went with Doom.

the more I think about it Jason Stratham from the Transporter movies would be damn perfect to play Agent 47.

Well, IIRC, it was THE fighting game back in the day.

I've never noticed any popular fighting game prior to that one.

Personally, I don't think any of it's derivatives are nearly as popular as the original.

I made my fair share of both good and bad picks last spring, and some of them using a very newbish mentality (as I was, in fact, new to the place). SMRPG over SFII seemed like a no-brainer to me, but I hadn't even heard of Contra, and I picked Earthbound over Doom.

I did manage to have Starcraft going until Wind Waker, and I was really pleased to come home from school to see Soul Calibur beating Kingdom Hearts. Shame that one didn't last :-(

MGS vs FFT was heartbreaking.

Basically, having heard nothing about Chrono Trigger until coming here, I underestimated it, and had LttP taking the division and going to the finals instead.

And, of course, I had FFX winning its division. But who didn't mess that division up? Very few people!

Not bad for my first contest, really....

I was only two picks away from tying for first in Spc2k4, though granted they were not easy picks by any means. If I had switch WW > SSBM to SSBM > WW and OoT > FFVII to FFVII > OoT, I'd have tied for first. My only other wrong picks were PD > C:SotN, KH > SC, and WW > KH [SC].

I didn't enter my bracket for the Spring 2004. I wrote it down on paper and forgot to get an account and submit it. Had I entered, I would have been one point behind Ulti.

This is what I got wrong:
1) Picked Earthbound over Doom.
2) Picked Pokemon over Xenogears
3) Picked Kingdom Hearts over Starcraft.
4) Picked Wind Waker over Kingdom Hearts.

Man, if Squall over Luigi caused such mayhem, I can only begin to imagine what would happen if Squall won against Magus.

That wouldn't be nearly as bad as Squall vs. Luigi. Squall crushing Luigi was far more shocking than him beating Magus would be. He had been so unimpressive the year before, and at this point barely anyone was bringing up Kingdom Hearts. Comparing Squall and Magus' 2K3 values makes Squall>Magus unlikely, but hardly implausible.

Ditto.

That's actually why I had Ness>CJ and Auron>Ganon this year. I learned that anytime you have a character possibly underrated by SFF, their ceiling might be pretty high. And after you adjusted Ness up, it was difficult to imagine CJ being as strong as he would need to be to beat Ness.

I'd vote Super Street Fighter II or Street Fighter II Turbo over some things that I wouldn't vote the original over. I just figured there were a lot of people like that.

I doubt that actually.
