"but if I wasn't hardcore into MGS I doubt I would know that"
The only game in the series I've ever played is the original and I know that's the art style they use. You don't have to be hardcore in the games if you pay attention to the contest.
"and played the other MGS' the name Big Boss isn't going to stay in your head"
I'd bet most of the MGS3 players got one of the previous games as well.
"So what it comes down to is, I don't think people are gonna recognize him."
I think they will. He won't be above Ocelot or LS but they'll know who he is even if they don't know he is NS.

Wow, this topic died....
In other news, there are specifically four potential matches that I can't wait for. In fact, these matches are my biggest reasons for following the contest.
1. Mario vs. Zero. To end this whole thing about Zero dropping or being overrated. Ryu improved just like I thought he would with a more recognizable pic, but now everyone is calling for Zero dropping last year. Mario vs. Zero will prove this BEYOND A DOUBT! And if Zero does better than expected, I don't want to hear ONE WORD about Mario dropping.
2. Bowser vs. Snake. Blah blah... don't care if Snake's drop is legit or not... blah blah... don't care about MGS3. If Bowser beats Snake, I don't care WHAT else happens in this contest.
3. Vincent vs. Magus. To verify how strong the FF7 train is. If Vincent beats Magus, it would pretty much confirm that FF7 >>> ANYTHING else Square.
4. Tifa vs. Sonic. See #3. Also to see if Tifa is indeed more popular than Aeris.
Those are the only matches I really care about, although I'd like to see how these characters perform leading up to those matches, and also would like to see my other favorite characters do well (Knux, Sonic, Vivi, Link). But those are the main matches I am interested in.

Aeris is my ENTIRE basis for Vincent > Magus. Aeris is right up
there with Magus in 2k3. And I personally think Magus has a WHOLE lot
more going for him in terms of being likeable. So if Aeris can be as
strong as he is, I don't see why Vincent and Tifa wouldn't be as strong
as her, if not stronger.
I also haven't seen ANY indication that Aeris is more popular than Tifa and Vincent. All of the polls point to the latter two being more popular. And even if Cloud and Sephiroth had the majority of the votes, if someone likes Cloud or Sephiroth the most in the game, I would see them liking Vincent more than Aeris. That's just my opinion though.
Another thing that pushed me in Vincent's favor is Aeris/Sora. I would think that Vincent and Magus would be around the same strength. Aeris is around Sora's stregnth and she KILLED Sora with SFF. And I hardly think that Aeris is that much more likeable than Sora seeing how a lot of the voters liked Sora enough to give him his strength in 2k4. That being said, I would attribute Aeris/Sora to the power of the popularity of FF7. Of course Chrono Trigger is more popular than Kingdom Hearts. But if there was ANY SFF in Vincent/Magus, I would think that it would go to Vincent... especially after seeing that Magus IS capable of being SFFd (even though it was from his own lead). But nevertheless, you can't show any weaknesses in a close match.

Like I said before... Vincent has the exact same appeal as Dante, but
with the FF7 pedigree. Seeing how FF7 is much more popular than Devil
May Cry, I would give Vincent the edge in that match by default. Not to
mention that I think Vincent is around Magus's strength anyways, so he
also beats Dante by default based on that.
I know I'm sounding like Heroic Mario regarding Vincent. But to tell you the truth, I don't even LIKE Vincent. I would vote for Dante, Squall, AND Magus over Vincent should they meet. But I think that Vincent would beat Magus, and apparently it's enough of an upset to separate me from the pack.

I doubt that, not too many people care for Zidane.
And IIRC more people picked Zelda on the BOP.
Even if that's true, Zelda's mainstream appeal would be too much to handle for poor Vivi.

And honestly, people need to get over the idea that Final Fantasy IX isn't mainstream. Yes, it's not as popular as FFVI, FFVII, or FFX, but then again, most games aren't. He's not going to lose to Zelda due to a lack of mainstream appeal.

Before SFF, I believe that Zelda could do better than 56.5-43.5 on
Donkey Kong, which is what Vivi did. Zelda should take it, probably in
a match similar to Frog/Riku.

Zelda/Vivi is the best round 1 match just because of its appeal as
Nintendo vs. Square. TV/Kefka or Luigi/KOS-MOS can't say that, though
KOS-MOS is close to being a Square character.

You shouldn't feel bad about your Vivi>Zelda pick. There was
absolutely no SFF adjustment made for the Vivi/Sephiroth match, so Vivi
could be potentially stronger than people expect.

Who's to say that Vivi doesn't have mainstream appeal? He already proved himself by scoring over 57% on DK (which was better than what Tommy V. did a year earlier). Vivi also has the Black Mage Factor going for him, so even those who haven't played FF9 might vote for Vivi because of his image.

speaking of FF9, I've been thinking about Crono/Zidane; specifically,
how badly will Zidane be beaten? I've seen it said that newschool
Square and oldschool Square don't SFF each other that badly, which
makes me wonder if Zidane can avoid a tripling. of all the oracle
matches, I have no idea what to put for that match.

if Zidane can avoid a tripling
He won't. Overall this website despises FFIX. Its characters aren't prototypical "badasses" that appeal to homophobic teenage boys, and overall the game adopts a "fairytale" storybook vibe. Expect Zidane to recieve a royal ass kicking from Mr. DBZ.

Reply the whole thing in ONE post please, you're confusing me.
My point is, if noone cares for a game's LEAD, what are the chances of people actually caring about that game as a whole?
I'd say slim at best.
Btw, I've never heard of said FF char contest, or at least I don't remember.
For proof that FF IX isn't all that mainstream, just look at Kuja.
He lost to a joke entrant.
I never said that Vivi doesn't have mainstream appeal, it's just that Zelda has him beat hands down in it.
The real question is whether or not those who know Zelda cared about her.

Nah, the site doesn't despise FFIX. It's merely indifferent to it. For
the record, Crono would be expected to get 64% against Vivi. I think
Zidane can at least manage 30%, as long as there's no SFF.

Look at Ansem. He almost lost to a joke entrant. That doesn't mean that KH isn't mainstream. Games =/= characters.

To tell you the pure truth, Squall has a very good shot at Magus and
will probably win. Square SFF is a lot more rare than Nintendo SFF, and
the voters generally prefer leads over secondary characters.

well, looking at the stats, I'd place Zidane somewhere between Ramza
(his floor) to Squall (his ceiling). before SFF, Ramza would get
29.25%, and Squall 41.59%. (2003 values of everyone). now if Squall got
29.08% SFF in his 2k4 match vs. Cloud and we assume the same would
happen vs. Crono (unlikely, but we have no other data to go on), our
range goes from 20.74 to 29.5%. ew. I think I did those numbers right.

The overlap between FFVII and FFVIII is a lot bigger than the overlap
between FFVIII and CT. It's unreasonable to think there'd be anywhere
near that much SFF, if any at all.

Look at Ansem. He almost lost to a joke entrant. That doesn't mean that KH isn't mainstream. Games =/= characters.
FF series SPOILERS:
--
Ansem isn't a good comparison for Kuja though, since he only appears at the end of KH, just like FF IX's Necron.
A better comparison for Kuja would be FF VIII'S Ultimecia.
Although games =/= chars, it shouldn't be as bad as to the point that the game's main villain would lose to a mere joke entrant.
