Contest Stats and Discussion - Part 160
From: Sir Crono | Posted: 7/20/2005 3:06:28 PM | Message Detail
All right, it's been confirmed that the top 3 on the leaderboard all picked CJ to win today.

That means LeonhartForever will be #1 until Ganondorf/Yuna, meaning Squall Leonhart will finally take his rightful spot at the top.

40000 for Ness. Won't be too long before he sets his personal record for most votes in a match.

I don't know if this has been brought up before but the theory behind so of the villains performing as well as they did in the Spring was that they represented their series.

So would Bowser become the flag-bearer of the series if Mario lost to Samus?
From: HaRRicH | Posted: 7/20/2005 3:14:47 PM | Message Detail
If villains represented their series, we're gonna see an upset of unheard-of proportions: Diablo > Sonic.

Even in 2k3, when he was SFF'd by Bowser, Ness would've been expected to get 20.22% on Mario. I can't see him doing much worse than that.

Can't wait till Ganon vs Yuna.

Ewww....you deserve to lose that number 1 spot if you prefer Yuna over the best character out there, Ganon.

Anyway, congrats on getting the Top spot. =P

Yuna is an awful character. Really. I just finished a second run through and looked back to see why I thought the FFX characters were awful. It wasnt all of them. I just hated Yuna and Wakka.

Actually, it is all of them. I hate every character in FFX, except perhaps Rikku. If not for the horrible characters, the game might actually be good.

Nothing, but I wouldn't expect them to.

I figure when you're dealing with two fairly mainstream PS2 games, votes will go to the character from the more popular game, and therefore to Carl.

You know, it figures. I never bothered looking at this match at all, I just went with the flow and picked CJ. I don't think I seriously examined any first-round matches, besides Terra vs. Dante and Kefka vs. Vercetti. Well, there goes my zero bracket, at any rate, and most likely my alternate bracket. On the plus side, my serious bracket heavily favors Nintendo (though I had CJ winning), and this looks like it may be Nintendo's year. Kirby > Tidus is looking more and more likely now, and I'll be very interested in how well DK performs on Master Chief. Of course, Donkey Kong has proven time and time again to be ridiculously weak in these contests, so I don't have much confidence in him doing too well. But after this match, I'm not counting anything out.

I'm thinking mostly SSBM factor, although it's true that we really need to see some Square matches before we make judgments as to how well Square will do this contest.

Off of the first two matches that just so happened to have Nintendo characters winning, everybody's claiming Nintendo jumped...may I remind us all that they both won over new characters that haven't proved themselves yet? The biggest case you can relate to Joanna is Perfect Dark in the Game Contest, which wasn't all that impressive....the biggest case you can relate for CJ is Tenpenny in the Villain Contest, which had nothing to do with the word impressive. Mario's coming off impressive because RUMOR HAS IT anti-votes keep him from blowing most characters out, and Ness is impressin' because sc2k4.com refused to acknowledge Auron got SFF'd.

People will be even more sure it's Nintendo's year when Samus faces Yuri, too. I can't wait for some Square characters to come into play so we can see if there's any good reason to believe all this yet or not.

Well, I have magus and dante meeting, with dante winning. But then I'm thinking, if I have magus getting there, why would he lose to dante?

Either way, I have Crono winning the entire bracket before losing to an old champion, so what do I know?

It wasn't even like I meant to have it that way, but I just forgot to change it since I was changing magus through his matches, and somehow left the dante/magus match untouched. But it's the only pick I have that I'm not confident about whatsoever, as opposed to just partially like the rest of my bracket.
From: Mumei | Posted: 7/20/2005 4:22:24 PM | Message Detail
Wait, what? They are on different systems, from completely different games? How could there be any SFF in this match?

Ooh, how it made me mad that Ness/CJ was the most frequently mentioned match for being "overhyped". I saw more people mocking others for picking Ness over CJ than I did see actually pick Ness, I swear.

Heh...Ness/CJ is the only R1 match I have different from the BOP. The BOP generally has missed only 1 or 2 matches for R1 each contest, so here's hoping that I can make it through perfect in Round 1...

Oh, and I'm still perfect with predicting anything involving GTA, Earthbound, or SotN. Alucard WILL defeat Sora next round! Vercetti WILL beat Kefka. :P (I -would- love to see Kefka win, though)

I took CJ and had confidence in him, but I still thought the match would be close.

Huge mistake, indeed. Everyone should know by now that if we know a match will be close that the underdog will have more than a shot at winining. See Squall/Jill and Sora/Ryu Hayabusa, as well.
