Contest Stats and Discussion - Part 159

If CJ doesn't get the afternoon and night vote push most of us expect him to, he may end up looking as weak or weaker than Jak. I absolutely refuse to believe a GTA main can be that weak, crappy picture or not. Couple that with the fact that Nintendo has impressed everyone twice in two days, and I like where this is going. =)

Calm down Sage.... it's not like we didn't see this coming. CJ had a bunch of possible factors against him anyways.

It's apparent that GTA may have a lot of fans and players, but that still doesn't overcome the fact that they don't like CJ, his image, and the whole gangsta persona. They probably just didn't let that stop them from buying and playing a popular GTA game. GTA is known for the gameplay anyways, so it would be ridiculous for people not to buy it just because they don't like the main character.

No he does not..this is a disgrace..an insult...where are the 4 million plus peeps who bought GTA San Andreas??? Where are they now, when their boy CJ needs them? Why are they making me look bad and costing me a point on the 2nd freaking day...

Yes, he does. Are you telling me an average gangster deserves to win more than perhaps the most infallible hero in the history of video games? The only other character that can rival the sheer fortitude and determination of Ness is probably the Dragon Quest V hero. Despite all of the **** that both go through, neither one of them can be broken. Ever. And you're trying to tell me that a ****ing criminal deserves to win more than Ness? Give me a break.

In my eyes, EarthBound is the most popular game ever that can still be called "cult." Ness is leaps and bounds ahead of guys like The King Of All Cosmos, Manny Calavera, Vyse, and Laharl in terms of popularity, and even moreso in terms of character. Guys like Auron and Bowser weren't underestimated; EarthBound was underestimated. It always has been, because it is considered a cult game. But look at the facts: EarthBound had a respectable performance in the 2004 Spring Contest against one of the most well-known and recognizable games of all time, the game that popularized the FPS genre, Doom. Ness has won two matches, against Jak and Carl Johnson, both of whom are considered to be modern-day, mainstream icons. Obviously, being modern and mainstream isn't enough. We may as well refer to Jak and CJ as Who Cares V2 and Not Ness, because that's what they are. Show some respect for the Unlikely Protector Of The Earth. :)

Not icons in general, of course. But they are among the most popular characters that are "modern" and "mainstream," the most popular of them being Master Chief.

By the way, even after all this time, I still laugh every time I see your sig.

My favorite part of the whining is people claiming that CJ is a better character than Ness. Another part I like is how some of these people cry, "Play GTA, fanboys," while they have never played EarthBound. Having thoroughly beaten both EarthBound and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, I can assure you all that Carl Johnson isn't one eighth that character that Ness is.

I refuse to ever pick Ness in a match off of principle alone. I also picked Jak last year even though I figured Ness would probably win. The same point that cost me a prize, but I'd rather go against Ness than to win a prize on here.

Ness may be the single character I dislike the most EVER in a contest. Even Sephiroth.... At least I actually LIKE the game that Sephiroth is in. I can't think of one person who's been in a contest that I would vote Ness over.... <_<

If I wind up whining (which I hope I don't do), it's 'cuz of my bracket and nothing else; I threw a vote to Ness, though I don't really care 'bout either of 'em. He got my vote for owning all in SSB, so, yeah...

...and CJ's gettin' his ass stomped. I feel like I had Ness pegged fine, it just now looks like I over-estimated CJ. Damn.

As a funny side-note, I'll never get a perfect first round, I've decided; I always miss the first controversial match. Squall/Jill, DK/DH, Tidus/Shadow, and now Ness/CJ.

Pft. Ness is a better character than CJ.

This is coming from someone who has owned EB since 1995, and GTA:SA since "November To Remember" 2004, someone who has beaten both games completely, and someone who is twenty years old. It's not a matter of something being for kids or not being credible; Ness really IS the better character.

The GTA fans played EarthBound and realized it was a far superior game to anything named Grand Theft Auto. Forget the excellent multiplayer in GTA2, the awesome city in GTA3, the music in VC, and the gameplay in SA. EB is better than all of them combined, and Ness really does deserve to win this match.

Please. If not for SSB/SSBM, Ness would be getting his ass kicked. One cult game from a decade ago does not a strong character make.

I think it bodes well for Kefka, as this match shows a mainstream character that's much weaker than expected. After this, I fully expect Vercetti to be weaker than he was last year, so I think Kefka could take him.

Ness really IS the better character.

Ness is a mute with a baseball bat who is winning based soley on the strength of the Nintendo fanboy's haven known as Super Smash Bros. Melee, and the fact that *gasp* his opponent is black.

CJ is an infinately more developed, interesting character. For you to say that Ness is the better character with such confidence only makes me wonder if you know what "character" is.

Oh well, its only one point though. It'll be nice to see the Italian Stallion ass rape this little punk come round 2.

I knew this would happen. It's good to see GTA fanboys commiting suicide all the time and whining that they're "boy" lost to Ness, but now I feel stupid for picking CJ. There was so much logic to go off for Ness, like Tenpenny not getting 30% against a borderline midcarder, and now, it seems Ness is just as mainstream as CJ and Jak, if not more. His game might not be, but it's obvious he's become something bigger.

Oh well, it's just one point, but I lost it because I didn't have balls. Some contest winner I deserve to be.
