Since the vote totals seem to be good so far.. Will this help our Square characters more??

I wouldn't book anything, but if high totals continue, I'm predicting a Vincent/Squall final for the Devil Division.

These vote totals are helping me cope with the fact that I have Vincent and Squall facing off at the end of the Devil division. The only thing I'm not real happy about is that I have Squall winning that match and I honestly think that FFVII will be victorious. :(

I'm gonna backtrack a bit and talk about SFF.

If two characters ae on the same system, there is SFF. Well, two characters from POPULAR games. If a voter likes both games, chances are they like both characters. This is in itself the SAME FANBASE. SFF doesn't mean every voter shares the fanbase, it could mean a portion of voters have difficulty picking their favorite. I believe that Joanna would do "better," in an extrapolated sense, against a Square character.

Do not underestimate how many strictly-nintendo or strickly-PS gamers there are, not everybody has a lot of systems. Same console matches will bring SOME degree of SFF, as long as both characters aren't from fodder games. And Perfect Dark is NOT fodder. Here, a nintendo voter immediately see's joanna, a character they like, and mario, their faithful nintendo powerhouse. But against cloud, squall, etc., the strength/popularity probably wont steal from Joanna.

And this is half "common" sense to me, and half my experience/observation. In the-elite chatroom there was much difficulty picking mario vs joanna (Ive been at the elite for like 5 years now, if you dont know me).

It only makes sense that there is a heck of a lot more SFF in same-console matches than in between-console matches. Mario vs Samus may not be decided by strength as shown in the first 3 matches each, but by which way the SFF goes. Today's % really is irrelevant, Samus hasn't even performed yet..

Tidus/Shadow was the most debated first round match, and it was a close one to boot. That's enough for me.

You're just basing that on the board. Tidus had 70% of the brackets behind him. I'd hardly consider that highly debated to the casual bracket maker.

Because people compare it to 2003 and naturally assume that higher vote totals mean more strength for Square, which I think is pretty stupid. If anything, I'd bet that the higher vote totals are due to a good bracket and the recent upswing in site visitation (check Alexa).

Why would a good bracket cause an increase in voters? Most don't care about the bracket when they vote, they vote for which of the two characters they like better.

Second half usually has less votes. Or at least that seemed to be the case when I kept records for the 15 minute updates a few times...

Can The Supercomputer tell us anything about this?

Percentage of total votes at 12:00

Cloud vs Samus 2k4- 56.58%
Crono vs Magus 2k4- 55.76%
Link vs Cloud 2k4- 54.93%
Kefka vs Wesker Sp2k5- 47.94%
Donkey Kong vs Duck Hunt Sp2k4- 45.15%
Frog vs Master Chief 2k4- 41.73%

Mario vs Bowser 2k4- 56.12%
Mario vs JC Denton 2k4- 53.06%
Mario vs Crono 2k4- 44.81%

I just picked a few matches at random and all the 2k4 Mario matches then calculated what percent of the total votes they had at 12:00. The close matches seemed to get more votes in the second half of the day(Surprize! >_>). Of note is the fact that the Cloud vs Samus match that this match is frequently compared to was very front loaded.

As of 12:00, Mario vs Joanna Dark had 56102 votes. As long as it's pre12:00 votes is less than 56.102%, we'll break 100k. So right now, the chances of breaking 100k look pretty good.
