too bad mario is going to beat samus....

the whole concept of lara vs. joanna is just speculation by people that don't want to look at direct comparisons. everyone who picked samus over mario won't acknowledge that joanna > jc denton, but instead needs to find some other way to prove that if mario is getting stronger, it will still not be any stronger than samus is. unfortunately there is no way to know anything for sure about their strengths compared until their match comes around...

now what i do think for sure, is that whoever does better against their second round opponent will be the winner between the two.

Mario and Crono will each have an insane build-up. Remember, to reach that point, Mario would have to defeat Samus and Snake (or Bowser or whomever) and Crono will have vanquished Mega Man or Sonic. Plus, it'll be their fourth meeting and their most historic, meaningful one at that. The level of hype will be incredible. Link and Cloud, on the other hand, will garner almost zero hype. Neither of them will have had any time to prepare and showcase themselves to the public; it'll just be a one shot deal.

You're acting like we've all seen two characters face each other in a one shot poll after not participating in the tournament. If Mario and Crono meet in the finals, it will garner a ridiculous amount of votes that anyone would have a difficult time eclipsing.

Honestly, matches don't really NEED buildup to get a large number of votes. Tidus/Ganondorf had a lot of votes, and it was the third match of the contest. Squall/Luigi is the highest non-Noble Nine total ever, and it was supposed to be a ho-hum second rounder.

Sure, they may be less build-up now, but remember, in order for Mario to reach Crono, he'd have to defeat Samus. His contest stock would instantly skyrocket if he pulls that off.

There's certainly no absolute guarantee Mario did anything, but at least stay the same with last year's value. We all know that Joanna is going to be fodder, very weak at that. But I see nothing wrong with at least thinking she'll be above the level of JC Denton, which is looking rather obvious at this point.

This match doesn't necessarily dictate that he's going to be beating Samus or Crono, but it does not look bad at all that he's pulling in the votes and is putting up a performance over 80% that a good number of people weren't expecting. Despite how it is against fodder, the first match for a character can actually tell a lot about how strong they'll end up being in the end. I believe Link/CATS pretty much told the tale for Link's 2004 run. I'm not saying that Mario is going to clearly dominate everyone, but there's nothing wrong with thinking Mario is a little stronger, at least, by this performance.
