I'd love for the second round to be sprites. It's quite obvious that
the sprite round is Ceej's favorite when it comes to making match pics,
so having the sprite round earlier in the contest wouldn't surprise me
if he enjoys making the pics so much. I do wonder what he'll do later,
though.
Maybe we'll finally see a .gif pic.

Here we have one of the strongest characters in the contest against a new character. Mario has a lot of matches under his belt and with Clinkeroth out of the way Mario now has a good chance of winning this contest. Joanna Dark has been in only one game, which was Perfect Dark, a rather popular game during the end of the life for the Nintendo 64. Joanna could be considered a cult character do to people don’t really know her, but those that do really liked her.
Now we all know that Joanna has no chance of winning this match, but the real question is how much will Mario beat her by? Over the contest we’ve seen some cult characters do rather well, but we’ve also seen them crash and burn like mad. Now we have to consider a few factors to determine her strength.
First of all sales for Perfect Dark were over 2 million in the US. Now that’s pretty well for a game near the end of the Nintendo 64 era. But as we may all know sales don’t give the full picture or else Pokémon characters would do very well in these types of contest. Also in the games contest Perfect Dark may have done well again SotN, but the Castlevania game didn’t do as well against GoldenEye.
Second, Joanna Dark is from a FPS game and unless your name is Master Chief you’re not going to do to well in these contests. Take a look at Duke and Lara they’re both from popular game series yet they do poorly in the contest, but then again both of those characters are hated by many people so Joanna might not do worse then them.
There is also a possible chance of SFF happening on that match. Even though the game was made by Rare, the game was on the system where almost everyone had some kind of Mario game. Whether it be Super Mario 64, Mario Kart 64 or even a Mario Party game I can tell you that at least 80% Nintendo 64 owners had some kind of Mario game. Though if there was going to be SFF in this match it will be fairly small.
Finally there are Mario anti-votes. Personally I don’t think that’s true and it’s only an excuse used during Mario’s first match because he did so poorly and even if there was any anti-vote it will be fairly small and would most likely be cancelled out by Joanna’s anti-votes.
I’m going to expect something around 80-20, but there is no way Joanna is going to escape a tripling by Mario. This may be the first match of the contest, but it won’t be the most interesting.

I'm playing GTA:SA for the first time in a few months now, and I must
say CJ is a pretty damn good character. The script in the game really
develops him better than any other character in GTA history (not saying
much, I know). I am very glad to see him in this contest, shame Mario
is going to kill him.
Anyone else feel the same way? I'm also pretty much finishing up my 100% completion run...finally.

There was no pack-in game at launch for the N64. The frst game it came
packaged with was Shadows of the Empire. I believe beyond that the only
games to come packed with the system in no perticular order were
Episode I Racer, DK64, and Hey You, Pikachu!.

Tifa's sprite. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.
It's really not gonna affect the outcome, though I'll be glad to see the great Luigi sprite. It'll be good to see Kirby's sprite, too. If only Knux had gotten a winnable first round match, we could behold his awesome sprite as well.

Come to think of it, has Joanna been on the Xbox yet?
No, she hasn't. Perfect Dark Zero is currently set to launch with the Xbox 360, which doesn't come out until November of this year.

As he walks the path of life...his name is called for..chanted by
those, his fellow Elites, his equals, who know the power of his
prose...as the noobs, fanbabies, and nerdboys cower in the
darkness...afraid the truth of their blind loyalty will be brought
forth before their judgment clouded eyes...
He answers the call with a tip of his BoSox cap...draws forth his pen to compose the very column that has increased Stats thread readership by 23.39%... He is...
The Sage of Board 8, Steve Illumina
Hahahaha, greetings gamers the world over...the time has come to write once more...be afraid kiddies, be very afraid indeed...
And so for 2005 it begins, in the 'Shiitake' Mushroom Division..
(1)Mario vs (8)Joanna Dark
Steve's Pick: Mario
Fanboy-O-Meter: Favors Mario!
Upset Odds: Nil
Match Fun Factor: 6/10: Pretty fun...but Mario vs Karnov would have been closer! :)
Comments: In DigiPen, the hallowed video gaming design and programming school, every student must take a class called 'Intro to Gaming History'. And in said class, on the 1st day of the semester, after roll call and the obligatory distribution of the course syllabus, a question is posed by the instructor to the gaming industry hopefuls. The question...
"Who is the father of gaming?"
Some might say Nolan Bushnell, founder of Atari and the Chuck E Cheese pizza chain. Others may pipe in with Ralph Baer, who designed many pre-Atari gaming gadgets and concepts. But the truly smart kids will say...MARIO!
Thats right kiddies...none of us would be here today, if not for the gaming revival spurned by the undisputed King of Platformers. In 1985, games were as dead as the Furby is today, and headed for the back aisle of K-Mart forever, until a mustached plumber changed all that. (You dont really think it was that dumb duck or that lame-o robotic thing do ya?)
So then, it is because of Mario we are all here now. But you know what...too many gamers forget this fact. These, the ones raised on a healthy dose of Halo, with a side of Metal Gear. These, the ones who think less than 6 buttons on a joypad is 'primitive'. To you fools, I say...show the proper respect to the King who gave you all the hobby you so truly love today, no matter the genre you happen to play!
The King is bitter after his defeats in 03 and 04, and he is riding high, aboard his trusty steed the Red Yoshi, and he is tossing hammers at all who get in his path, starting with this jobber Joanna Dark.
Joanna Who??? How did this chica make it this year to be Fodder #1? A 1-game series that has been dead for 10 years...and yes I know a sequel is coming...but still. This spot should have been given to Karnov! Now HE would have drawn some votes...
Prediction: Mario cruises, breaking the admittedly shallow hopes of the GameFAQs Goldeneye fanboy contingent of 432 fans.
Quote of the Day: "Itsa me...Mario!"

So, since the brackets had been locked, where should the guru contestants post our brackets?

Good to see another Sox fan. And 37% of all statistics are made up on the spot.
As for the N64's initial release, it was not packaged with any game at first. It's initial release lineup consisted of a whopping two games: Mario 64 and Pilotwings 64, the latter of which is a very underrated game, IMO. A few weeks later, a second wave of about eight or so games came, on of which was Wave Race 64. Note that this information is all from memory, so I might be wrong about it, but I'm positive there were only two games on the first couple of days.

For the sake of simplicity, I'm going to refer to Gordon Freeman versus Tanner as Schrodinger's Match. -Phoenix Flattener

Heh, Ulti has the exact same bracket as me, except I have Samus >
Mario and Crono, and Vincent over Magus. His tiebreaker is also
dangerously close to mine... <_<

well, i gotta say that the only matches i considered changing at the last second was changing to were:
Ryu over Bowser
Kefka over Vercetti
man, i am slightly depressed that i had to listen to reason and logic and pick against my main man Kefka. but at least there are no sprite pics this round, so it looks like we won't be seeing Angel Kefka in this contest. with that pic, i honestly think Kefka would have a decent shot at Vercetti, but with Lettuce Kefka/ Dee Snider Kefka, it just ain't gonna happen. =/

I feel cursed sharing the exact same bracket as Ulti. Nobody has ever had the winning bracket twice.
