Eh, I dunno. Square characters do seem to do better as the vote totals go up. Squall/Bomberman was pretty low, while Squall/Kirby was one of the highest of the contest. That match seemed to be more in line with his 2003 strength.

Squall through 2k3 Kirby is at 29.37%. Granted, I don't think the drop was all Squall, but I do think he was a bit weaker and 2k3 and will be a bit weaker this year as well.

I originally had Samus beating Mario and then beating Crono. But it just didn't feel right to have Mario lose to Samus... and then it didn't feel right to have Mario lose in the finals. I may be delusional, but I just can't go against Mario. He's one of the only characters who really deserves to win this contest, anyway. >_<

By the way, I don't think Mario could beat Crono, but I also don't think he has a prayer against Samus. So if you have enough faith to put him over Samus, you might as well put him over Crono, who's probably weaker.

Anyway, I'm not going to criticize anyone for picking their favorite in a longshot. I took Mega Man last year, for god's sake. The purpose of the contest is fun, which doesn't always mean taking the most likely winner for every match.

Not at all. I know for certain there is at least one cheated vote in every match but I'm sure the actual number of cheated votes per match will be far greater than one.

We know there's plenty of cheating, it's just not likely to unbalance the results. Cheating would be done rather proportionately on each side in most cases, and if a person is willing to cheat in one match they'll probably do it in every match in most cases. Frankly, it doesn't have much effect on the math unless it's something like Starcraft.

What's with all the ridiculous underestimation of Master Chief around here?

Did you guys forget that he starred in the most hyped game...pretty much ever, as far as mainstream awareness goes? The same game that became the best-selling Xbox game of all time in 2 months? The same game that got GotY nominations up the wazzoo? The same game that single-handedly doubled the userbase of Xbox Live?

If Master Chief was already equal to Frog, then I don't see why he couldn't beat Snake now. Hell, he might even be able to put up a fight against Magus.

Furthermore, Xbox hate has considerably died down since 2003, and even then, it was on the way out. Why people are still bringing up MC's match against Felix is beyond me.

P.S. MGS3 won't be doing anything to Snake. The game sold under a million, IIRC, because it was released in the shadow of-what's that game again?-Halo 2. Ditto to Metroid Prime 2.

This is my personal viewpoint on the Mario/Samus/Crono fiasco:

*Samus would beat anyone in this contest other than Mario
*Mario would beat anyone in this contest other than Crono
*Crono would beat anyone in this contest other than Samus

And MC staying close with Frog doesn't look all the impressive because of what happened with Liquid Snake against Sephy, and because Solid Snake and Mega Man didn't come off looking quite as good as they used to.

Even after accepting Solid and Mega Man dropped, Solid is still a strong character, and Frog certainly fought for a third upset in a row. Plus, somebody (I forget who, sorry) had the theory that FF7/Sephiroth (maybe Cloud, too? Not sure) have got a type of fanbase that can SFF other games/characters on the PS that came out around when it did...

FF7/Suikoden 2
FF7/Xenogears
FF7/Metal Gear Solid
Sephiroth/Liquid Snake

...while it's certainly iffy, all of those games/characters performed worse against Sephiroth/FF7 than generally expected. I think Seph/Liquid is almost certainly an anomoly, though I'm not about to give Liquid full credit for his match against Frog, either.

I know exactly how inconistant that is with actual contest results. But extrapolating only works so well... I'd take Ryu over Aeris despite his inferior %age against Sonic. Every match has a degree of "SFF" (in a sense... just not extreme enough to be called "SFF") and I think that Sonic vs Ryu favors Sonic more than Aeris vs Sonic does.

Overestimation of Master Chief and Dante, anyone? Certainly. I'm probably wrong, but this is how my bracket rolls.

No way Samus is getting 60% on Mario, but other than that those are semi-reasonable expectations. Samus over Sephiroth could very well happen, but I don't think it won't. And by "Samus will beat everyone in the contest", you are just referring to the main bracket, right? Because she is definitely NOT beating Link or Cloud.
