Contest Stats and Discussion - Part 153

So is Bowser the clear favorite against Tidus??

I thought Tidus has a shot but the board seems to favor Bowser quite heavily..

According to the BOP:

Bowser: 82
Ryu: 18
Tidus: 9
Kirby: 3
King of all Cosmos: 1

That's how many picks there are for each character to win in the divisional finals.

EarthBound is really starting to annoy me. I can't make it through the stupid section between Twoson and Happy Happy Town without either running out of PP or dying, thanks to Ness being the dumbest god damn fighter I've ever seen. He misses half of his physical attacks, and I'm not even kidding. I would use healing spells and food and such, but I keep running out. Stupid walking weed things that drain PP.

I don't think I'm underleveled (LV 18)... am I?

You mean Peaceful Rest Valley. Well, I'll give you some tips then.

I forget if you could equip one at that point in the game, but if you're using a Yo-Yo or a Slingshot, then that's the problem. Yo-Yos and Slingshots have a natural 1/4 chance to miss, where all bats other than the Casey Bat - which is worthless - have a 1/16 chance to miss.

I'm sure you know by now that the UFOs and Spinning Robos have beams that cause colds. Keep your PP high so you can use Healing Alpha when necessary, or simply have a few Cold Remedies in stock. There are a few static Magic Butterfly spawning points in the Valley. If you find one and "use" the butterfly to restore 20 PP, you can go off screen and come back and another butterfly may have appeared.

Territorial Oaks are a waste of time and effort, since they explode when you kill them. Just run if you see one.

After defeating the boss in Happy Happy Village (not the Sanctuary boss), the broken bridge at the beginning of PRV is fixed, making traveling to Twoson a lot easier.

Stop sucking. :P

I really need to replay Earthbound before my summer is over. I started with Final Fantasy VI in May and have beaten Vagrant Story, Shining Force II, Final Fantasy IV, Suikoden II, Final Fantasy IX, FE8, and now on Final Fantasy X. Im going to try to get through FFX-2, Earthbound, and Super Mario RPG before my summer is over.

You can't really blame people for not liking Tidus to win the division. He's been horribly inconsistent and his strength has never been proven, however a guy like Ryu has been consistent year in and year out, and a guy like Bowser got 40% on Sephiroth in the Spring. That doesn't exactly favor Tidus does it?

He's been horribly inconsistent and his strength has never been proven,

Horribly inconsistent? He pretty much stayed the same from 2002 to 2003. The only year where he was widely differed from that was in 2004 where he faced Mega Man, who also screwed up things by getting rocked by Link like that. That's why I have such a hard time believing he took a complete drop of 7%. That doesn't make sense for him to just fall so far after two years of performing about the same. Hell, he gave Ganon one hell of a match in 2003. I don't know where you're getting the idea that he hasn't "proven" his strength. The only year that can be applied is in 2004. He did beat Shadow, the stats had them very close too, but got beat far worse to Mega Man.

WDF'd, which, unless you think Claire could beat Bowser or Zelda, is a pretty good thing to put your trust into. If there was a WDF, Tidus got a whiff of whatever helped all the other new school Square characters in 2k3 (KHF, or what have you). And then along came 2k4, which you can say whatever you want about it, but given that you think Magus is overrated and that Mega Man wasn't as strong as he was in 2k3 I don't know where you pull 2k4 Tidus ~= 2k3 Tidus out of.

WDF'd, which, unless you think Claire could beat Bowser or Zelda, is a pretty good thing to put your trust into.

I certainly don't think Claire could do anything of the sort now. Just like I don't think Ken could beat anybody worth noting despite 2002.

And then along came 2k4, which you can say whatever you want about it, but given that you think Magus is overrated and that Mega Man wasn't as strong as he was in 2k3 I don't know where you pull 2k4 Tidus ~= 2k3 Tidus out of.

Well, I have no idea where you pulled that I think Tidus is going to be equal to his 2003 ranking either. I have remained the same that him completely underperforming just doesn't make much sense to me. I believe he'll be much higher than the place he has in the stats now suggests, but I don't think he would be at his 2003 value. But it isn't like he would have to be that high in order to beat Snake anyway.

It's because Bowser broke 40% on Sephiroth, which even Mario didn't do. But, I think both overpreformed on Sephiroth, by quite a bit. Just because Sephiroth was such an overwhelming favorite to win I'd guess. I mean that's gotta influence some people, having 48 out of 50 on the top 50 having Sephiroth as the winner.

And yet nothing he did put him head and shoulders above either Ryu or Tidus. Comparing him to a static Ganondorf, I don't think it's still quite as good as either Ryu's or Tidus's best years.

In all seriousness, Squall/Magus is actually worrying me a little. We've never actually seen new Square vs old Square tested in a high profile match (not counting Crono/Kefka), and though Squall is hated, you have to remember that this match is taking place in the second round when Squall gets his hotty face pic that all the girl love. Magus.... doesn't perform too well when he gets the close-up Vegita mug.
