Contest Stats and Discussion - Part 153
From: Aprosenf | Posted: 7/8/2005 4:26:00 PM | Message Detail
Yes, the dropped the price to $99 and bundled it with the Zelda Collection in time for the Christmas season, which was more than enough to make me get one, although granted I was already somewhat of a Link fan already.

On another note, does anyone know if edouble has Alucard going all the way again? What's funny is that it's not just a favorite's bracket, but he honestly believes Alucard will win.

I've already stated that multiple times... I'm not even saying my position anymore. I just definitely don't agree with a Collector's edition making somebody who's already THAT popular even more so. It's not like the games on the Collector's edition are rare or anything. And I doubt it enticed a bunch of NEW Link fans to get a Gamecube. Link already has a significant amount of fans.

The reason that ZCE gave an increase is because all the hardcore Zelda fans had a GCN before it came out...the people who bought a GCN when it was packaged with ZCE weren't Zelda fans at all, they just happened to get all those Zelda games. The point of the CE was to introduce Zelda to non-fans, not to give Zelda fans a reason to buy a GCN.

It's similar to the notions that MMAC was going to cause a significant increase for Mega Man, and SFAC was going to cause a significant increase for Ryu. We saw how that turned out.

Does someone have the Gamecube sales numbers for the Zelda Collection package? I don't know the exact numbers. Was there a spike in Gamecube sales?

GCN sales numbers with Zelda CE (in America alone) were somewhere around 2-3 million. MMAC sold less than half a million before his matches with Link and Snake. That's a rather large difference, if you ask me.

I don't get why Alucard absolutely has to be adjusted upwards if Ganon made an increase between 2004 and Spring 2005.

He doesn't have to, though it is possible. The point I was making is that Alucard through Ganondorf is quite a bit higher than 2k3's Alucard through Sephiroth, and ahead of Sora, albeit not by much. However, if you think Ganondorf (and possibly Magus and Tidus) are overrated, then you should probably go with Sora.

I think it's quite possible that Alucard benefits from the same thing as Crono; SotN is probably the most obscure out of the games that the Top 32 odd charactes come from. Alucard does well, people who don't know him ask "Who is Alucard?," they're introduced to SotN, and we have new Alucard voters. Yay.

And then, there's Alucard 2002... remember, not only did no one know of him on the board (it was the first big match of ungodly whining on this board, IIRC), but adjusting Mario/Cloud based on a constant Alucard gave us a level for Cloud that's a bit tough to swallow.

Man, Alucard/Sora's starting to get me quaking in my boots. As do Ganondorf Auron and Bowser/Ryu. This second round is going to be the end of me no matter what I do...

If Square-Enix made a port of CT worth buying, I would. This has not yet happened.

If I were to buy it for the SNES, it would be secondhand, and Square still gets nothing.

Metroid is the only game series that comes to mind that has over three games where every game is a great game.

That's a pretty good criterion and Metroid does score well on it. But I would argue that the worst Zelda game is better than the worst Metroid game. (As long as you don't count those cd-i games or whatever they were).

I haven't the slightest idea why Nemesis is the closest villain to his hero, particularly when Wesker has a normal ratio.

Well, I got an idea (which, keep in mind, I'm not puttin' much stock into yet): are there any other villains in that hero-to-villain comparison list that had a game named after them? Then also keep in mind how well Diablo did.....

[futuresuperstar's first post about The Continuity Factor]

If we had some more information on Nemesis, Wily, and Ultros, then we could have a lot better idea of how true this is. Since we don't though, I'm stayin' skeptical on it though it's not impossible; we saw what Kefka did with the pic most people like of him, afterall...to flip around and play devil's advocate though, most people wanted Trance Kuja, too, and we saw what happened there.

I believe Leonhart had a theory made similar to yours (Dual-something, I think he called it), where Revolver was essentially two different characters...though Revolver would benefit from the "separate" fanbases no matter the pic instead of be divided by the pic, I believe his theory went. While both thoeries can have their arguments and I stay skeptical on both, I think Leonhart's theory is the more likely one.

if anything, Vergil is overrated because of Ghaleon's picture.

Actually, that'd make Ghaleon under-rated; it wouldn't affect Vergil at all. =P

It's not like the games on the Collector's edition are rare or anything. I doubt it enticed a bunch of NEW Link fans to get a Gamecube. Link already has a significant amount of fans.

Why wouldn't it? It's not as if every Gamecube owner likes Link and gets his games. Also, the fact that they're not rare doesn't affect much; if they're good and immediately available (as in being packaged with the system), then you're likely to find new fans with it. I would argue that Mario would gain a boost if Super Mario Bros. 3 were to be shipped with every upcoming Revolution (not counting what Mario 128 would do).

It's similar to the notions that MMAC was going to cause a significant increase for Mega Man, and SFAC was going to cause a significant increase for Ryu. We saw how that turned out.

1) More Gamecubes with the Zelda Collection were probably sold than the collective sales of MM:AC/SF:AC on all systems; if not, they're almost certainly comparable.
2) If you got MM:AC/SF:AC. it's likely because you originally wanted it. If you got the Zelda Collection, it's likely because you originally wanted a Gamecube.

Wasn't it being bundled with the GCN when the price first dropped to $99 and Nintendo had that huge sales surge? Or is my memory failing me?

Pretty sure you're right, and I'm about positive it was during Christmas season too. (NOTE: Looks like Aprosenf beat me to it. Hurrah.)

Morals > not paying > hauling your bum to a store and shelling down dough on an old PSX game.

So...confused.....

i would never try to convince anyone to match their bracket to mine, seeing how i am one of the few people here who still considers this contest a COMPETITION; but.... i haven't been able to say much in a while, so i thought i would weigh in on the current Sora vs. Alucard. This is how i look at it:

In 2K2, Jill Valentine beats Kirby with 53.3%.

Then, in 2K3, Alucard beats beats Kirby with 52.21%

Finally, in 2K4, Sora beats Ryu Hayabusa (who is even with Jill) with 61.72%

now, it seems obvious that Jill has dropped since 2K2, and it is possible that Kirby rose a bit between 2K3 and 2K4, but even with those two factors, Alucard still has ground to make up. you also need to compare these x-stat values:

Alucard 2K3 - 27.56%
Sora 2K4 - 28.93% (expected against Link 2K3)

i put very little faith in Alucard's 2K4 SFF adjusted value (as i do in most adjusted SFF matches), so i compare their two values that didn't involve any SFF. now, i'm not saying that it's impossible for Alucard to win, but based on all of that, i am sticking with Sora.

I have no problem in expressin' my views on matches here; a competition, yes, but for as much as one could get help from me by changing their views to match mine, I can also get that same help from somebody else and match someone else's views. As for what matches we should and shouldn't be agreeing on, we don't really know...

...none of us KNOW how some matches will play out, anyways. Sure, some of us know how Kirby/Tidus will likely turn out...but none of us KNOW beyond a shadow of a doubt how Kirby/Tidus WILL turn out. Until there is somebody who can answer that precisely with details before the contest starts along with the rest of the matches, then I see no fault in expressing views; sure, if you convinced someone to switch and you're both right, that's more competition...but if you're both wrong, that's less compitition. Then, if you convinced someone to make a wrong pick, more power to ya, heh.

*stares at Ulti* Zero to the Final Four, he he he. Who did you convince to make that pick, anyways?

I'm surprised that there's still several people who can't believe Zelda would beat Snake (sorry to bring this up). Using RPGuy's overall averages, Ganondorf would beat Snake. It only gets better when it seems Ganondorf has increased from then. To me, it doesn't make sense that Zelda would be significantly weaker than Ganondorf. They should really be about even, but I won't argue against the stats. Even though I'm sticking with Snake, it will be close: probably, it will be around 46-54 or closer.

My averages should not be used to decide matches. You're much better off looking at the nearest year. As an example, both Squall and Kirby are rather underrated because of their poor performances in 2k2, but both have since redeemed themselves.

That said, I'd pick Ganondorf over Snake should they have met, but I'll settle for the riskier Bowser over Snake.

No Collette was like dealing with a 4 year old. Genis was a little racist punk. I liked the gameplay and all, but outside of Kratos and Raine, the characters just werent likeable at all.

The only character I couldn't stand was Colette, and even she has her moments. I totally disagree on your assumption of Genis; Yggdrasil is the racist one, and since Genis is a little kid who has little experience with getting along with humans it's easy to manipulate Genis into questioning his beliefs.

Agreed. Defective copies of Uniracers, Final Fantasy IV, and Super Mario All-Stars? Trying to sell me Dragon Warrior IV for $50? **** used game stores.

There's no moral dilemma when it comes to emulation. It isn't hurting anybody, except for people who are trying to rip you off anyway.

While I've thoroughly enjoyed the games I've emulated off of the NES, SNES, and Genesis, I'm gonna wait on emulation any newer than that until the next systems start to be released; otherwise, I feel guilty about it, even if it isn't actually hurtin' much of anyone.

To note, once there's good DS emulation goin' on, I'm gonna check that out...but that'll be more to decide whether I get a DS or not than abusing piracy for personal savings.

Defective copies of [...] Final Fantasy IV, and Super Mario All-Stars?

Holy crap, you must be my twin. At the beginning of the summer, I had to clean out every speck of my SNES and FF4/SMAS cartridges to get them to work.

Emulation may be hurting the good people on eBay, but there are more than enough dicks selling stuff on that site for me not to give a crap.

EarthBound is really starting to annoy me. I can't make it through the stupid section between Twoson and Happy Happy Town without either running out of PP or dying, thanks to Ness being the dumbest god damn fighter I've ever seen. He misses half of his physical attacks, and I'm not even kidding. I would use healing spells and food and such, but I keep running out. Stupid walking weed things that drain PP.

I don't think I'm underleveled (LV 18)... am I?

Thought I wasn't the only one for a second.

That game drove me nuts the first time I played it. The rats in the first Melody dungeon kept killing me, and I broke my keyboard- er... controller because of it.

Those little bastards. I'm still terrified of that section :(

And Ness does seem to miss a lot, but it wasn't that bad when I played it. Maybe you just have bad luck.

And it's on more than just physical attacks. PSI Rockin has an insanely wide area of damage (there is a reason that no one uses Axes on FFT; they're horribly unreliable), and costs way too much given that I only have.... *checks*

55 PP. I guess I'll just level a little and stay near the beginning so I can just run back to the hotel, given that the enemies yield a ton of EXP.

Oh yeah, and don't expect that much from the battles.

Only the last one is any good.

Yoblazer did rather well in the guru contest.
Rather well, indeed.

Quick tip: get a teddy bear. No, get several. They really help in battle. Also, midway through Peaceful Rest Valley (somewhere near the river) you should be able to find a Magic Butterfly. And avoid encountering the Territorial Oaks at all cost. If you encounter them, RUN.

I have just realized that I won't be here to submit my bracket into the guru thing.
It is already posted in the BOP topic. If that is not acceptable, I have to skip the competition this time.

As much as I want to put something original about the Guru Contest here, I can't, because Yoblazer owned me way too hard.

As for emulation, I don't see anything wrong with emulating games like Valkkyrie Profile or Suikoden II. They are to the point where the developers won't see a dime of profits anymore. All $100+ will either go to some kid on Ebay or, more rarely, a used game store that's probably selling a defective copy.

That... was her final mission. And like a true soldier, she saw it through the end.
