Good pic.

And how exactly can he dissapoint when we have no idea of Agent 47's contest strength?

I'm just saying that, considering the number Solid did on Tanner, he still disappointed in the contest. Tanner was new and we didn't know what to expect from him, but Solid still should have done better against him considering how he did the year before. This could be the same thing about Sora/Agent 47, except Sora doesn't have to get weaker to fall under expectations this year. Sora could beat Agent 47 99-1, but if he still loses to Alucard, he still disappointed.

From: sidharta | Posted: 7/6/2005 1:30:58 PM | Message Detail
I'll take Samus without a doubt.

She scored so much better against Cloud than Crono (who beat Mario) did against Link (who is only slightly stronger than Cloud).

That aside, if even Link can't SFF Samus, Mario will need a HUGE miracle to RSFF her.

Ya know, a lot of people will say that Vaan's looks will hurt him, but I've yet to see evidence that Tidus's looks did anything to Tidus. Also, Sephiroth is supposed to be a pretty boy and it certainly hasn't hurt him. Don't bother guessing a FF lead's strength by appearance.

Oh, and I have a feeling that if Square would actually release the game (I remember when we thought we'd see FF12 characters by this contest) it has a fair chance of being held in higher regard than FF10.

In the last topic people were discussing Tidus. I think Tidus is a pretty good pick just because he's guaranteed to actually make the division finals. Bowser and Ryu have to win a tough match just to get there. So if you assumed that all three are basically equal, then Tidus would have a 50% chance of taking that division vs 25% each for Bowser and Ryu. It's the same logic I applied to Chrono Trigger vs LTTP/FF VI in last year's spring contest.

Looks like DMC1 sold just over a million, while DMC2 is under 500,000. Just like I thought, HM. If DMC2 can give Dante a boost despite crap sales, DMC3 can do the same.

MGS3 is over 900,000, which is quite good considering that it's only been out for 7 months. If DMC2 can give Dante a boost, MGS3, which sold twice as many copies, can probably give Snake a boost.

Yes, Lucid, an "opinion" that is stupid, I love that one. I'll have to remember it. But I, quite frankly, did not enjoy anything that Metal Gear Solid had to offer me nor have I ever enjoyed the series. I'm not here to give my "professional" opinion on a game and give it a high score because of its technical aspects. If I did not enjoy a game, I'm not going to give it a high score. I'm terribly sorry if you do not feel that way, but believe it or not, that's how I actually go about rating games.

If you have a problem with that, then by all means continue to have your little problem. If you need to call my opinion "stupid" -- did I mention how funny that is? -- then go right on ahead.

I don't see how any game put together that well deserves a 3 out of 10, it's pure insanity. You don't have to love it, but anything less than a 5, and that's pushing it, is just ludicrous.

I don't see how any game put together that well deserves a 3 out of 10, it's pure insanity. You don't have to love it, but anything less than a 5, and that's pushing it, is just ludicrous.

Technically speaking, most games are well put together in that they are playable, have a series of menus that is capable of being navigated without severe issue, and looks at least decent by the hardware's standards. Yes, this is all the wonderful technical aspect of a game.

By technical standards, there isn't any glaring problem with Metal Gear Solid. It looks good, it has a nice soundtrack, it plays well enough that you aren't having a major issue with controlling Solid Snake or anything like that. The story is put together in an understandable fashion; the characters are given nice voice acting and dialogue that makes sense.

Yes, by those standards there isn't anything "wrong," per se, with Metal Gear Solid. It's crafted well enough to warrant above a 6/10, which is above average. If I were to be writing on a more professional level where I knew my opinion was going to influence another person, then yes, I would sit back and look at this in a different manner. However, I'm not attempting to save someone, or encourage them, to purchase this game. My own personal opinion on the game is that it is horrible. I found no level of enjoyment from the game, past the first few minutes. I played the game to completion, yes. It was perfectly playable and all that wonderful jazz.

But, like I said, it all boils down to how much I enjoyed playing the game and that was to the point of nothing. I gave it those points because it had a nice story and had a nice soundtrack. The difference between an objective look at the game and a subjective look at the game is what is the difference here. I'm not going to say I hated this game, it sucked, blah blah blah and then turn around give it at least a 7/10. That just makes no sense. I'm not forcing this opinion upon any particular person; what I say here has no real relevance one way or another. However, if I was going to influence another innocent person, I would rate it much higher. That is the difference.

Opinions can be wrong, Longfellow. When people hate games like Halo, Grand Theft Auto, and Final Fantasy for having annoying fanbases, that is a poor opinion. Likewise, if you needed help in Shadow Hearts: Covenant, whose opinion are you going to ask for? An expert on the game, or someone like me, who has never played the game? I might have an opinion, but it's not worth anything.

Anyways, yes, you and I rate games differently. While how much fun I have with the game is certainly a very important factor, I look past my own personal preferences and try to rate games objectively. If you compare Metal Gear Solid to any other spy thriller, to any other stealth game pre-1998, it blows them all away.

Precisely. That score is something that only I, deep down, feel the game deserves. If I was ever telling someone else about the game or whatever, that opinion wouldn't be brought up because I can fully realize that the game is not going to be that way to everyone; in fact, the game should have appeal to a large auidence. I'm just not apart of that auidence.

Opinions can be wrong, Longfellow.

This particular opinion cannot be wrong. There isn't any hard facts that is going to make my personal opinion on this game rise or fall. If I claimed something ludicrous like Earth made a full rotation in 16 hours, then you could insult me or whatever, because it can be backed up with factual evidence that it is not.

When people hate games like Halo, Grand Theft Auto, and Final Fantasy for having annoying fanbases, that is a poor opinion.

I, obviously, do not dislike any game because of its "fanbase." Quite honestly, the fanbase does not matter at all on anything concerning the game's quality. Ditto for popularity.

I might have an opinion, but it's not worth anything.

You're bringing up a situation where you simply do not know much about the game. You don't want someone who has a particular game as their favorite telling you to buy it, just as you don't want someone who has it as their least favorite game telling you not to buy it. And if you do get opinions from those two extremes, you're able to make your own comparison. Ideally, you want an opinion from someone who can point out its flaw and its strong points without being overly biased.

I look past my own personal preferences and try to rate games objectively.

Like I mentioned before, I can and do rate objectively on games, including Metal Gear Solid. But on a message board like this, I'm not going to say, "Well, I hated this game, but I would give it an 8/10 anyway." I am being very subjective whenever it comes to something like this situation we're discussing. But if someone me if they would like Metal Gear Solid, and if it was a good game, I would tell them yes and yes, but then slip in the fact that I personally hated the game. You give them the objective side and then you can slip in your own subjective opinion.
