Contest Stats and Discussion - Part 150

Yes, but it should be enough to get him past Amano Terra when he's the 1 seed in a 1-8 match.

I agree. I would take him over Terra without knowing DMC3 was around, simply because I cannot imagine Terra being that strong, or any FFVI character for that matter.

who would you guys take, Kratos Aurion or Kefka?

Kratos. I think he stands a great chance against Diablo, so it goes without saying that I would take him over Kefka as well.

yeah, Kratos/Diablo is giving me fits. I think he'd beat Kefka as well, along with Bison, and that's the only thing we have to go on in terms of how strong Diablo is.

A final note on Terra: Terra:Kefka reminds me of Crono:Magus more than anything else, except that Terra actually has a personality. On the downside, she isn't as prominent as Crono, but I do think that most people would agree that she's the main character. I think she'll squeak by Dante and beat Vincent (Kerrigan?) by a slightly larger margin, and end up around 29-30% on 2k3 Link. It'll be interesting if Magus SFF's her (or Vincent), and then goes on to get SFF'd by Crono (again).

That's actually not a bad thought. I would take Kratos over Bison in a close match, myself. But that wouldn't be a bad idea to look at the other characters surrounding the opposition to see if you would take the newer character over them.

Are you serious? Terra on the level of Ryu/Zelda?

Zelda, perhaps, but Ryu is a couple points higher than that. That seems to be the general estimate for Vincent, the 3rd through 6th strongest FFVII character, so why should it be all that different for what is likely the strongest FFVI character? When compared to other games, Final Fantasy VI is strong. When compared to other villains, Kefka is strong. Why shouldn't Terra be strong, or at the very least adequate, when compared to other heroes?

Terra certainly could surprise some people. We look at Kefka and imagine that all of the characters from FFVI would be a smudge higher than him at best.

There's been good reasons stated for Terra to be a good deal stronger and for her to be weaker than Kefka. I would imagine that she would rank slightly higher than him, but under Dante's 2004 value in the SFF-adjusted stats. I wouldn't be surprised if she actually won though.

This is going to be a great contest. Terra will make an impact with a victory over Dante, Manny Calavera makes an appearance, and Samus will stun everyone with a victory over Sephiroth. The only thing that could make it better is if The King Of All Cosmos and Carl Johnson switched spots.

Samus will stun everyone with a victory over Sephiroth.

I still don't see how someone could take, or think, Samus would have a victory over Samus. Even if you think Sephiroth dropped from the Spring Contest, he still will have Advent Children out to help him.

...But then it just struck me that you don't believe Advent Children will do anything, so that's probably why.

damn I cant remember, who said that it just feels wrong that the game (FFVI) itself wouldn't have a strong character

That was me.

Sort of sounds like Starcraft, in a way, and also with Kerrigan being basically left out of all discussion, as someone else said...

That was me, too!

ha, awesome, you make very good points then!

and thanks tre, I read the last two before this, so I think I'll just go from there, but thanks a lot!

It's quite possible that Terra loses, and I think she got hosed by going against a possibly DMC3 enhanced Dante in a rather strong 4 pack. What I don't understand is why people don't think she has a chance, and why I'm the only one with Terra in the Sweet 16 (according to the BOP).

I'm really considering changing to Terra now.

I appreciate the compliment, but you should make Terra your pick if the arguments of her fans make sense to you.

No offense to him, but I can't recall many times when he's ever really stated his opinion on a controversial matchup.

I was the first person on this board to make a bet that StarCraft would beat Halo. I won the Prophet Challenge for Mario/Crono last year, coming within 100 votes of the correct margin of victory. And have you forgotten that whole StarCraft/Wind Waker fiasco where we were almost screaming at each other? ;)

He originally had Master Hand before Leonhart and Heroic Mario convinced him to change it, right?

I gave Leonhart a little crap for that, just to have fun, but honestly, I had Master Hand winning two matches. Never did I think Master Hand would beat Kuja and then lose to Robotnik. So that wasn't anyone else's fault.

It's very realistic to think that Sephiroth and Samus have pulled even since the last contest, or that Samus may have even pulled ahead of Sephy. Sure, he'll have Advent Children backing him up, but Samus also got new exposure with new games for the Gamecube, Game Boy Advance, and everyone who bought a Nintendo DS.

It isn't that I don't believe you ever have, just that I never recall you doing such. It makes sense that you supported StarCraft, but I always remember Ulti for that match due to his long "match analysis."

And the whole deal with StarCraft vs. The Wind Waker still has some painful memories attached to it. Never did I believe StarCraft could come back from a 2500 vote lead in that period of time...

Heh. I hadn't realized I said that until this post. ;)

It's very realistic to think that Sephiroth and Samus have pulled even since the last contest, or that Samus may have even pulled ahead of Sephy.

I'm willing to understand how one could believe that Samus could have pulled even based off of the last contest, but I think Advent Children seals the deal on who should be taken for that one. I'll be voting for Samus, no doubt. But Sephiroth still remains a huge force in this contest and having something else added to his list would be far more impactful than anything Samus has had over the past year. I wouldn't expect any sort of boost from her over this year.

Just to throw this back into play again, because it seems to have fallen by the wayside...the picture factor.

Come on, now, pictures could have an incredibly minimal effect on obscure characters, but characters like Terra, Kefka, and to bring back Solid Snake, again, should never be in a situation where pictures will make a noticeable difference. You can't possibly know Final Fantasy Six without knowing Kefka to a lesser extent, and Terra to an enormous extent. How could the game possibly do as well as it did two springs ago, and yet, we're going to allow that the picture might influence how the main character does? What would influence someone to vote for that game if they didn't remember the character? I'm feeling somewhat a lot better about having Terra now, because Final Fantasy VI is clearly a force to be reckoned with, and Terra can really be at Zelda level, or even higher.

Just in general, the average voter knows who they're voting for, I dont' think that they're that stupid or fickle (in most cases) to change their vote based on a picture.

I voted for Duke Nukem solely because his picture was comprised of sheer hilarity.

And it's not the FF6ers who have to change their vote, it's the ones who don't care about either character.

It isn't that I don't believe you ever have, just that I never recall you doing such.

Yeah, I saw two or three people betting their accounts on Halo winning, and I was the first to do the opposite. Needless to say, I'm never doing that again. And yes, you and I were getting really irritated with each other around the Wind Waker match. You were 110% sure that Wind Waker couldn't lose. I wasn't sure StarCraft would win, but I was sure it could win.

By "game" you mean "demo that got boring after five minutes," right? If you want to argue for Samus, at least base it on MP2.

Whether the new release was any good or not never seemed to matter much. Exposure to new audiences is the most important thing. But yes, Samus has had three games since the last contest.

One thing that we can all agree on is that Terra got boned. Badly. Her and Tidus would be a good switch.

I said it so many times before this bracket was posted. "Terra will win two matches with the right seed." An 8-seed in a division of eight is not the right seeed. :(
