Contest Stats and Discussion - Part 150
From: NewLib | Posted: 7/3/2005 8:32:59 PM | Message Detail
Look Im not saying Riku wins, but its the only match I see in the first round that has sort of potential being under 60-40 and hasnt been discussed about. Unless sharing a fanbase has hurt Terra more than I thought and another character in the FF not sharing the fanbase with another character is really stronger than I thought.

I hope I could be completely unclear about that.

A very good candidate for an upset that no one will see coming could very well be Dante over Vincent or Kirby over Tidus.

I think Rikku'll make it closer against Ryu than Riku against Frog, personally.

I've got a question: if Sora were to face all of the Square characters that's been in a contest yet (including this one), who would you pick Sora to beat?

If we are talking about a Master Hand/Kuja like upset where 1 or 2 of sees it coming, Tera/Dante or Tidus over Ryu/Bowser could fit the bill.

Ryu over Bowser is perfectly reasonable; I just think Bowser'll have what it takes to win, as does many people. Much like Luigi over KOS-MOS, actually...which is kinda scary to think about.

I don't have time quite right now to chat, but if someone could like recap since the bracket was released, I'd appreciate it.

You would need to go back further than Part 148 for that. The bracket was released near the end of Part 145

There is no way in hell you can be even remotely sure of that. Nobody knows when it will start except cjayc. Speculating is fine, but sating that it will start then, as if you have any more of an idea when it will start then anyone else is stupid.

There's no way I can be remotely sure of that? Let's look at the facts shall we?

The nomination process ended nearly a week ago. We still have not received a bracket and today is June 27th, getting closer and closer to July 1st. The bracket predicting period almost always lasts a month. These crazy theories that we'll have one week to predict or that it will start in mid-July never made any sense at all, especially when we're almost in July.

Furthermore, what time did the contest start last year? August 1st. What time did we get the bracket? Around July 1st. Explain to me again how I cannot even be "remotely sure" of that claim. The only people who cannot be remotely sure are those making ridiculous predictions of the contest starting this week or in mid-July.

Hearkening back to an older subject, a note on Myst's sales: Myst came packaged with a lot of computers and peripherals; e.g. CD-ROM drives. That would inflate it's sales numbers (the makers of the game would get a much smaller slice from those "sales").

I read someone (therealmnm I think) post about having problems with the Link vs. Cloud updates. Would that be for SC2K4? That page works for me, it just takes a while to load because of all the data.

Because I'm bored, here's a look at Square heroes:villains for a look at where Terra might place.

If Terra:Kefka::Hero:Villain, Terra = XX.XX% on 2k3 Link

2k4 Cloud: 2k4 Sephiroth, 25.77%
2k4 Cloud: Sp2k5 Sephiroth, 28.24%
2k4 Vivi: Sp2k5 Kuja, 53.26%
2k4 Crono: Sp2k5 Lavos, 51.15%
2k4 Crono: 2k3 Magus, 26.59%
2k4 Sora: Sp2k5 Ansem, 37.09%
2k3 Tidus: Sp2k5 Sin, 48.25%
2k4 Tidus: Sp2k5 Sin, 38.30%

That's all I've got for Square Hero:Villains. If there are any others, let me know. Only two (Crono:Magus and 2k4 Cloud:Seph) would put Terra under Dante.

Let's take a look at something else.

Summer Contests:
Cloud > Crono > Tidus >= Squall > Sora > Vivi
Spring Contest 2k4:
Final Fantasy VII > Chrono Trigger > Final Fantasy VI > Final Fantasy X > Kingdom Hearts > Final Fantasy
Spring Contest 2k5:
Sephiroth > Kefka > Ansem = Lavos > Sin > Kuja
Generally:
VII > CT = VI > X >= VIII > KH > IX

Why can't Terra hang with Squall and Tidus, or, if not them, with Vivi and Sora? Because Kefka performs badly? Has that stopped any other Square character (with the exception of Cloud, who doesn't have to worry about it)?

Instead of strictly looking at numbers, you have to figure out WHY each of those numbers are so. Although Terra may be the main character of FFVI, she is not nearly as visible as the other FF heroes. Plus Kefka is more of a favorite among FFVI's fanbase than most of the other Square games.

Like I said before, even if she is stronger than Kefka, it probably wouldn't be by much more. I'd look at what I know about FFVI, Kefka, and Terra before I looked at number comparisons between hero/villain relationships.

Perhaps, but she is still central to the majority of things that take place until the WoR. That should still be plenty visable.

I didn't mean that literally... I meant more visible than the other characters in the game in the sense of being favored significantly more than the other characters. Terra gives the gamer more than enough time to end up liking other characters more, or at least to take their focus off of her. Plus she isn't what Crono, Cloud, or Squall, (and to an extent Tidus) are to their parties, both as a lead and in battle. She still may very well end up surprising though. I'm HOPING that she does.

Oh, and about Terra. I truly do believe that Dante got dicked over in his match against Sonic (that picture was horrible) and that 2003 is more indicative of what his strength is; there's also the fact that DMC3 will undoubtedly give Dante something, but we don't know what. I also don't think that Terra is as strong as Auron or Alucard, though I do hope to God I'm wrong. I'm picking Dante, but I'm voting/rooting for Terra.

I also can't shake the thought of what match pic she'll get. Unless she gets a sprite, she'll be another 2003 Kefka and will be going on name value alone. The pictures that we're seeing of Kefka and Cecil don't give me hope that Terra is going to fare much better in the looks department.

I've thought about that and tried to relate it to how he might stay Lettuce-free this contest...but Kefka had his 3D pic in the profile this spring; he's already got Lettuce in it this summer, for what it's worth. He'll likely get it first round.

I know that wasn't what you were gettin' at though; for his Sping 2k5 boost...where? The only boost I saw was Kefka/Wesker, and that's debatable on many levels. Now, with Diablo not gettin' any linkage against Ganon as opposed to the rest of his matches, Kefka may be minorly under-rated and may have had an almost-insignificant boost...but there's not much of a boost to talk about there.

I still don't think he had any sort of boost except in the match with Wesker, and that's not the match that the stats are basing him on, and even that boost would be miniscule at best. I'm holding to the theory that Kefka remained constant from his SC2K4 adjusted value, because at least the numbers make sense. It shows a small boost for Ganondorf, a large boost for Sephiroth, and a large fall for Sephiroth*. Those numbers are believable.
