It's not as outrageous as you're making it out to be. In sports,
people will often support the winner of their division, even if they're
not a team that they particular like, simply because they're
representing their division. Same with franchise voting.
are you kidding me? if the Packers knock out the Bears, Vikings and Lions out of playoff contention, there is no way in hell than any fans of those three teams are gonna turn around and cheer for the Packers. if anything, they would cheer even more for whoever the Packers are playing against next. that's a horrible example.

a movie based on arguably the most popular game of all time.
Don't make me laugh. FF7 isn't even the most popular RPG.
Is not Final Fantasy 7. I think that it's Myst, but don;t quote me on that.
There's this game from way back in the day. It's called Super Mario Brothers. Ever heard of it?
I detest, and I meant detest the Patriots, but lost my voice cheering for them in the Super Bowl. I hate the Eagles that much, and the fact that the game was close made their loss even better. Nothing to do with the topic, but it was still fun to root for a team that wound up winning, for once.
If McNabb hadn't come down with something, it would have been a different story. But as much as you hate the Eagles, you have to admit that Terrell Owens' performance was nothing short of heroic.

I doubt I can find another poll with only two choices, both chocies being identical.

Clearly, if Ganon and Bowser got such large boosts for representing
their respective series, then Liquid Snake should not have
underperformed by 10% against the same character the Ganon and Bowser
allegedly overperformed against.
Ulti just won the argument. Let it end.
It's not like it's 64 characters, and you have to choose one in a giant free for all. Hell if it was, CATS would have a shot at winning.
...ya know, that's actually true. A good shot, no less.
My senior year in high school (2003 season), our football team had to face the state runner-ups from the year before...and we lost, hard. We still rooted for them though, all the way to the state championship...and they won it, too. Heh, it just depends on how good of a sport you are sometimes.

Counting bundled sales, SMB has over 40 million copies out. The only
single game that can come close to that is Tetris, if I remember
correctly.
I don't know why Smurf finds my comment amusing. It's the truth.

I could have sworn that Myst had more sales than Mario 1. Glad I was corrected on that.
...Myst isn't even in the Top 10 highest selling games, much less number one. Myst sold some 9 million copies whereas SMB, packaged with the NES, of course, sold 40.1 million.
The highest selling game to date, not packaged with a console at launch, is Super Mario Bros. 3 with 18 million copies. Just for future reference.

Didn't Diablo 2 also sell as much as FF7, or am I just confused?

As much as I want to put something original about the Guru Contest here, I can't, because Yoblazer owned me way too hard.

Actually, Lucid brought up Pokemon, which never strikes me as an RPG
despite the fact it is. But after Pokemon, or sticking with consoles,
FFVII takes that title -- obviously, not the title.
What's second? I would have thought some PC game would be...
Pokemon Yellow.

What was that about human nature?
http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/index.html?poll=848
You know, that's actually extremely interesting. Heck, that may even offer evidence that the top character has a slight advantage.
Anyone know where that poll is about answering the poll of the day truthfully?
are you kidding me? if the Packers knock out the Bears, Vikings and Lions out of playoff contention, there is no way in hell than any fans of those three teams are gonna turn around and cheer for the Packers. if anything, they would cheer even more for whoever the Packers are playing against next. that's a horrible example.
Again, it doesn't always work. Yes, that's a bad example. But take the NHL, and Canada. Canadians will nearly always support the last Canadian team, even if it's not one they particularly like otherwise.
Clearly, if Ganon and Bowser got such large boosts for representing their respective series, then Liquid Snake should not have underperformed by 10% against the same character the Ganon and Bowser allegedly overperformed against.
Ulti just won the argument. Let it end.
Once again, there are other explanations -- for instance, the MGS series in general decreasing is possible (and Liquid wasn't the only MGS character either). Also, the whole Frog vs. Snake match with the terrible picture. Franchise voting is not a mutually exclusive idea. It leaves room for other anamolies as well. Ulti, didn't you yourself say in your Cloud/Mario analysis that on any given day, voting swings can go any which way given the proper situation (not your exact words, obviously)? Just because franchise voting doesn't adequately explain everything, such as Liquid Snake decreasing, doesn't mean that it's made invalid -- there are other explanations out there that go with it.

Oh, Diablo II probably had the Guinness World Record for "Most Addictive Game Ever Made."
Yeah, we never think of "RPG" when we think of Pokemon, but it is indeed an RPG, and it's easily the most popular RPG series ever, with Yellow being the top single title in the series.

Pokemon Red, Blue and Yellow all sold over 10 mill (red/blue sold 24
mill. together). I'm not 100% sure, but I think GTA: VC, GTA3 and The
Sims are the only non Nintendo games to have sold over 10 mill. (GTA:
SA and Halo 2 will probably also be there soon)

Are Red and Blue counted separately?
Of course. They were sold separately, they were marketed separately, and they will be counted separately. One should never combine the sales of Pokemon games and then say they sold more than some other title.

Indeed. Pokemon Red sold 13.5 million and Pokemon Blue sold 12.9
million. The series still puts up over a million with every release,
but the amount they sell has obviously slowed down significantly.

Vice City had over 6 million in the US alone, the others are a little
above 5 million in the US. So worldwide it's safe to say they sold a

http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/index.html?poll=1500
You mean this one?
No, it was this one:
http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/index.html?poll=1516
Now, obviously one shouldn't put too much stock in this poll, but it does show that a significant number of people do vote certain ways for rather strange reasons.

Wow HM, your data is really different then mine 0_o
According to Game developer magazine, Vice City is the best selling game in the US with 6,3. It's hard to imagine them being off by almost 7 million...
---
As much as I want to put something original about the Guru Contest here, I can't, because Yoblazer owned me way too hard.

Wow, that first phrase was worded pretty badly, that's what you get when English is not your mother language I guess ^^

Here is my question. If Ganondorf overperformed because Link wasnt
there, why would he not overperform in the summer for THE EXACT SAME
REASON.
The answer is quite simple, actually. Voting patterns in a villain contest will not be the same as in a normal one. Snake wasn't there this spring, yet Liquid dropped like a rock anyway.
---
SC2K5 bracket: Samus over Snake, Crono over Megaman, Samus over Crono; Link over Sephiroth

Well SA reached 6 million in about 3 months so I doubt your numbers are right.

That was in response to what Lucid said. He said something about 5 million and I said, "In America alone" and gave the actual number it has sold.

And I dont believe that for a second. There is no reason for that to be the case when you cant tell me the great majority of people would still vote for who they like the best, not who they thought was the best at doing evil-doing.
