Why just Bowser and Gdorf? Shouldn't Sephiroth have gotten a boost for representing FFVII? Liquid for MGS? Luca Blight for SuikII?

Sephy didn't get a boost because everyone wanted to take him down. Liquid possibly didn't get a boost because Ocelot was in the bracket and shows up more often. Luca didn't get a boost because I doubt that half the people who voted in his match have even played Suiko II.

That said, while I think there was at least a little difference between voting trends in the SpC and the SC, I don't think it was a big factor, and I don't think it was divided along series lines.

"Because Mario is not in this bracket, I will vote for Bowser! And I wouldn't have done this in the first place, either!"

It's not as outrageous as you're making it out to be. In sports, people will often support the winner of their division, even if they're not a team that they particular like, simply because they're representing their division. Same with franchise voting.

Also, you all seem to think that if one accepts franchise voting as having some credibility, then it suddenly has to explain all of the anomalies of every contest. Clearly it doesn't. It is one of many, many factors. We don't throw SFF out the window just because it doesn't affect every duo as much as it does others.

Not everything makes sense in this contest and a lot of it never will. But even if his argument isn't one that is supported very well or whatever, there's no reason to be as ridiculous as what you and some other people were doing.

Feel free to attempt at pointing him in the right direction, but insulting his intelligence on the matter is just wrong. Heck, I disagree with him completely, but you should try explaining better and if it still doesn't register just forget it. Not worth the time.

Who says I believe it? I'm just presenting arguments for each of the cases. I even go right out in the next paragraph and say that I personally don't believe that series lines was a factor.

And come on, you of all people should know that Stats people generally do better than your average bracketmaker.

I do have high hopes for this one, though -- mainly because I'm actually trying to make intelligent choices this time, rather than just picking characters on a whim and having the popular characters I'm not very familar with losing instead of doing a bit of research and discovering that they've got the match in the bag. >_>

That's an extreme case, of rivalry overcoming the desire to have lost to the champs. It's kind of like how Canadians everywhere will support the last Canadian team in the Stanley Cup playoffs... unless they're the Leafs.

Yes, I'm sure after Boston beat the Yankees in the ALCS last year all those Yankee fans were cheering for them to take out the Cardinals.

Every time I make a point, someone goes to extremes to make it seem silly, acting as if it has to apply in every case or in one particular example for it to have any merit. I'm not familar with baseball, so I can't really speak for it, but while the Yankees fans might be cheering against Boston because they beat their team (for the umpteenth time, franchise support does not nullify other factors, such as supporting whoever is facing whoever beat your favorite team), a fan of another team in the American League might be more likely to support the Red Sox since their team was knocked out. It's really not that implausible at all. And in the contest, it might not even mean voting differently -- it might be the difference between voting and not voting. Someone who doesn't really care for either Bowser or his opponent, but likes Mario, might vote for Bowser since he's the only representative of the Mario series in the Villain Contest. This same person, however, might simply be apathetic in the same match in a character contest and not vote either way, because they have Mario characters they like more to support.

An excellent example -- much better than the ones I've come up with. And being Canadian myself, let me assure you that it's most true (including the Leafs part).

Pre-Season Analysis Day 6

Got Villains?

This topic is being heavily discussed today so I might as well do this today. So in what way can we use the Villains Contest to our advantage or are it impossible to use and we shouldn’t bother. I guess we’ll see.

From the x-st of the matches we need a base. If we use Sephiroth as a base we get weird results such as Bowser being as strong as Mario and Ganondorf being even stronger. The only character that seems normal is Kefka and even then he’s gain a percent and a half. Out of the seven old characters that have made it to the contests the only ones that don’t seem crazy are Ganondorf and Kefka either way they are the same if you measure them out. Personally I used Ganondorf as the meter stick because he is stronger. So that would mean that Sephiroth will now get about 39% against 2k4 Link. This puts Bowser at about 31% against Link. The only really weird thing left is Liquid Snake, but I have no idea what happened there.

Bowser and Ganondorf could’ve done well because they were representing the series because Mario and Link weren’t in the contest. Don’t believe the above statement. Personally I don’t think that’s true because if you liked Mario, but not Bowser and voted for Mario in his matches and against Bowser against his then why would you automatically change your opinion because Mario isn’t there. Most people don’t change their opinion because their favorite character isn’t in it, but a villain you don’t like is in the contest so the vote for him. If that were true then why isn’t Robotnik as strong as Sonic now, or if Ocelot and Liquid as strong as Solid Snake? Just because it works for Bowser and Ganondorf doesn’t mean it will work for all of the other villains. This is like I said more likely a case of Sephiroth dropping hard then Bowser and Ganondorf rising high.

The villains’ x-st should be taken with a grain of sand because of all of the fodder vs. fodder matches. In those match one of the character looks as if he/she had gain strength out of nowhere. This isn’t true, what’s happening is that when people vote they either vote for the character they heard of, the match picture or randomly choose one (from human behavior it’s usually the top choice). So if the character is below Ridley (or LS if you really want to) and didn’t lose to one of the characters that is above Ridley then be careful on using them.
