Contest Stats and Discussion - Part 149
From: Lucid Faia | Posted: 7/2/2005 12:07:10 AM | Message Detail
Still, this is only 47 votes, so you can't draw TOO much from this.

You can't draw anything in it. Have a Crono/Magus poll on the board and watch Magus win in a landslide. Now watch them go at it in a contest setting, and the result is a little different.

As others have said, that wouldn't make any sense.

Neither does having the last match in the main bracket serve as the tiebreaker, but he's doing it anyway.

No **** sherlock! This was just a tally so far of the results for those who were interested. You would have to be an idiot to use those results to base a bracket decision on. The fact of the matter though is even without that mini-poll, there's still nothing to convince me that Terra would be significantly stronger than Kefka and the rest of the FFVI cast.

Had Terra begun her contest career at the same time as Kefka, there's no doubt in my mind that she'd be the stronger of the two. However, with this being her first time and with the picture she's going to get stuck with, this will be 2003 Kefka all over again.

Oh, I have no doubt that Terra probably will be stronger than Kefka. Nobody who is not a fan of Kefka would vote for him, which was probably the reason Pac-Man did so well against him (higher vote totals + first contest appearance + bad picture = possibly more people that did not know who he was). Terra at least has a look that at least would make someone WANT to vote for her depending on her competition.

But Lucid has been implying that the relationship between Kefka and Terra could possibly be similar to that between Vivi and Kuja or other hero/villain combinations. And I don't agree with that at all, especially since there is no major focus on one character in that game. A lot of the characters are well liked in that game, including Kefka. So if the other characters in that game WERE stronger than Kefka, I don't think it would be by that much....

I'm supporting Master Chief for the win...

...over Crono.

I think I said this before, but the chances of this happening are very slim.

However, if it does happen, not only is my bracket screwed, but MC could have a very big shot at winning the finals. As far as "adult"(note the quotes) gamers go, I think many that would have voted for samus in the normal case will vote for MC.

I also disagree with Lucid about Terra being stronger than Kefka due to her being the focus of most the game. There are exceptions to that rule, such as Colette definitely not being the strongest character from Tales of Symphonia.

I also wouldn't say Terra's the primary focus by a very large margin. In the World of Ruin she is one of the characters least focused on. World of Balance, I'll give you that. But in either case, she's not focused on by a huge enough margin to make a difference.

Raiden fact of the contest: Alucard is a plagiarist, this year Raiden will prove it!
From: octoinky | Posted: 7/2/2005 2:59:56 AM | Message Detail
The tiebreaker is based on the last match of the 64-bracket because that is the 2005 championship match. Look at all the wording. The TOC is BONUS points, etc. This years champion will be crowned inside the 64-bracket. The TOC is an add-on to decide which champion is the best - not to decide this years champion. Link, Cloud or Sephiroth cannot be the 2005 Summer champion.

So if that makes sense, thats why the tiebreaker is back there. I'm not sure if I like the TOC giving points either... But maybe it adds more meaning to the 3 matches to bracket-makers than if it weren't really worth anything after the contest has been decided already.
From: Slowflake | Posted: 7/2/2005 6:08:04 AM | Message Detail
In my book, whoever wins the main bracket ends up with a worthless title, because she (or he) didn't have to fight the strongest for it. The real championship is in the ToC.

Whatever Samus or Crono end up with pretty much equates to consider Banjo-Kazooie beaten after Grunty's Furnace Fun. "But... they rolled the credits and everything!"

i'm currently laughing at my friends because of their actual brackets.
one of them genuinely believes gordon freeman will win his division, has crono and magus out in round 1 and has cj beating zero and has mater chief winning the contest because of halo two. and when i said MC lost to a frog he started saying this site cheated

SERIOUS? You have the heavy favorite of the main bracket losing in round 2, and call it serious? Well I'm surprised... go ahead and submit it, but bah gawd, will the stats look screwed up after that. Well, I guess it's not too bad, unless you have Knuckles going all the way...

...oh, and I want you to have a look at the bracket some guy submitted. This is obviously a faves bracket, look at all the insane upsets... and Freeman in the Sweet 16 is a dead giveaway anyway.

I think you're missing the point. Nobody's saying Terra would be the most popular character because she's the focus of most of the game. (Yuna and Rinoa being two other examples to go along with Colette.) We're saying Terra is the most popular because she's the main character, which we determined by sying that she's the focus of most of the game, which in Final Fantasy VI is all you can go by when it comes to determining a main character.

For what it's worth I disagree that Colette is the focus of TOS; I would go with Lloyd, the main character. She's probably the most important character in the game, but that doesn't mean she is the focus of the game. Aeris is probably the most important character in FFVII, but she's gone after Disc 1. IMO, the focus of a game is always around the main character, but I'll agree to disagree for now.

The focus of most of the game actually is around Colette. She takes up the spotlight for a good majority of the game, but I wouldn't necessarily say that she is the focus. Even with that, it takes more than being a prominent/important figure in a game to get votes if you are not the main character. You actually need to be likable, or liked by the people who have played the game. This is a big reason why I'm projecting Kratos to be above Lloyd, although not by much.

Vincent over Dante seems to have gotten alot more popular since I last checked.

You know, I just realized that Final Fantasy VII characters have only lost to those "elite" set of characters.

From what I gathered, the only characters in the contest to beat an FFVII character were Solid Snake, Sonic, and Link.
