people don't seem to care that we get 4 sonic characters and might get 5 if robotnik somehow gets in. and people complain if we get more than 3 ff7 characters. well we do get more than half of the SSB:M crew and no one complains.

That's because FF7 is part of a series, while Sonic is the entirety of a series. And 5 is too much, I don't want Eggman back.

on a side note why is this board restricted to level 15 users and above?

Sorry, I just can't endorse any bracket that brings back Luca Blight. Gordon's seeded way too high, and Zelda's seed is too low... but that's for the sake of a hard to predict match with Dante (though I really think Zelda would take it).

In a nutshell, drop Luca Blight, and you win.

Ramza is the weakest FF character to date, and he was still strong enough to break 40% on Kirby.

Ultros? Sin? Kuja?

The only Nintendo fodder we've ever seen came from Pikmin and Animal Crossing.

To be fair about Pikmin, Captain Olimar had to face Mario as a 16-seed. He was royally screwed from the beginning, although I doubt he would be on the level of Wario in a normal match in 2k3.

I don't see any reason why characters like Wario,Ramza,Olimar,Nook,Resetti,Kefka,D.K or Aya should be even considered to be put into this or any contest until they have a new game or something.

Wario's had a DS game released and is in the Mario side-games like Mario Power Tennis. Captain Olimar has been in Pikmin 2 (and we very well COULD see him in the upcoming Super Smash Bros. Online...though that's just speculation on my part). Tom Nook (and I assume Mr. Resetti, too) are in the Animal Crossing ports that's being made to one of the Nintendo hand-held systems (I forget if it's the DS or the Advance). Donkey Kong has had Donkey Konga and Mario VS DK released, and has also joined in Mario side-games like Mario Power Tennis.

There's a case for all of your Nintendo characters you mentioned to have another shot...and I'll say this for Kefka too: when he had the Angel Kefka pic, he beat Wesker worse than Kefka should have beat Luca (remember that Wesker beat Luca about 60-40). I don't know if that's just how the match was supposed to go or if that was the fault of Kefka's picture, but that very well COULD have been the true strength of him. If so, that's not Kefka's fault; that's CJay's. Complain on him.

I suggest you ditch Laharl and Luca and bring back some characters who did good in 2002 but never returned, like Morrigan, Aya, Kasumi or Strider.

Ultros? Sin? Kuja?

These three never were in a character battle before.

Just a thought. GTA:SA has been 1-2-3 in the FAQ lists during the nomination period. Do you think CJ could get an overinflated seed due to the same effect that got Tanner in last year?

San Andreas had a release right before nomination time this year. It just came out on XBox. And yes, he very well could. But it might also boost his strength, like it did for Tanner.

Tenpenny isn't an indictation, though. I guarantee any villain from the other GTA games would do just as poorly, probably worse. If anything, Tenpenny's only implication is that we'll actually be seeing CJ this year.

Tenpenny wasn't really all that developed. he was just a crooked cop, that's all, not really anyone to get attached to. I did pick Tenpenny(ha ha) to beat Liquid Snake, so that was mistake #2 I made :P I tend to overrate GTA I guess.. there's a lot of people that visit the boards, check the FAQs.. and a lot of casual folks that visit the site. I always figured GTA would fare a heck of a lot better than it does. I guess I'm wrong :P

CJ's a lot more developed. You understand what he is, and why he does what he does. He's a bit more of an actual character than TV actually was, to be honest.

With that said, considering the fact GTA stuff has flopped in these contests, CJ may very will win his first round matchup(depends on where he goes and who he's up against, of course). Anything after that is a crapshoot.

Those might be good matches, but I wouldn't expect Squall to win. I'd rather see him in a match against someone like Ryu, Zelda, or Bowser.

I would've loved to see the faces of the Vercetti pickers when they saw him failing to double Kite.

Then again, virtually every vet sided with Megaman... almost only the tourists supported Vercetti. And we know how that one ended... and almost never took place.

It would just mean Magus is overrated, similar to how Tidus dropped (though probably not as extreme). Seems reasonable to me. I'd take Ryu over Magus without a thought. This board highly underestimates him.

I don't know about the stats, but I know that I could die a happy man. Squall's not THAT much lower than him anyway. He should hit about 45% or so with SFF.

People keep bringing up the fact that Angel Kefka did better on Wesker than he should have on Luca and neglect the fact that Blight's number is based on 2-year-old data. I wouldn't give that performance much weight.

Oh I jsut realized that we don't want to see a Mario VS Megaman match. Mario would win if Megaman's preformance was correct against Link. But if Link could SFF Megaman why wouldn't Mario be able to do it since it's Super Mario Bros 3 > Legend of Zelda here. I feel sorry for the Blue Bomber =(

I highly doubt that Link/Mario would go the same way should it happen again. We've come a long way since 2002. Back then, people actually were really backing them to win, and he probably was a bit more popular overall. Now? I think more and more people are turning away from him. I still think that his 2k4 match against Crono was more due to Mario than Crono. In 2k2, people looked at Mario as the king of video games. There's no WAY he can lose this contest! Now in 2k5, I think it's safe to say that more people have given preference to the likes of Link and Samus in the Nintendo ranks.

Oh yeah... I LOVE Aya Brea to death, but I think it would be insane for her to be at the same strength as she was in 2k2. Her last game came out in 2001, and it was nowhere near on the level of a Final Fantasy in popularity. It came and it went. There's no anticipation of a Parasite Eve 3 (we are past the golden age of Square). Although Parasite Eve is one of my favorite games, we hardly see people talking about playing it or playing through it again. So sad to say, but I doubt she could get as close to DK as she did before.

Well...Ganondorf did 2% better against Alucard than Squall did against Kirby, and Alucard beat Kirby with 52%. So, unless Ganondorf took a sizable increase from '03 to '04 or Alucard fell a bunch, Magus should beat Squall.

My Thoughts

SQUARE (14): Kefka, Cloud, Sephiroth, Aeris, Squall, Vivi, Tidus, Auron, Yuna, Ramza, Crono, Magus, Frog, Aya.

Cloud, Seph + Crono - For obvious reasons, yes

Squall + Tidus - Heroes of popular games, so yes.

Aya - A different side to Square, so yes

Auron, Aeris, Vivi - For me these characters should be rotated, they are all big (but not huge) FF characters. But there are so many more that should get a chance. Auron has been in it 3 times now and I see no reason for him to be in it again. Give Tifa, Zidane, Seifer etc.. a chance.

Kefka - Someone from FF6 should be in it, but it shouldn't be kefka. Kefkas featured in 3 contests and has essentially messed up in all of them. Terra or someone else, at least deserves a chance.

Ramza - I suppose, he is on his own so yes.

Magus + Frog - 3 from one game that isn't FF7 isn't acceptable. Magus and Frog are of equal strength and unless they face each other in Round 1, both shouldn't be included.

Yuna - A fresh character and star of the most recent FF, so yes.

NINTENDO (13): Mario, Bowser, Yoshi, Luigi, Link, Ganondorf, Zelda, Samus, DK, Fox, Ness, Kirby, Mewtwo.

Mario, Bowser,Link,Samus - Yes

Fox, Kirby - Stars of popular series's, so yes.

Ganondorf + Zelda - Should be rotated each year. 3 Zelda characters seems too much, but 2 seems too little.

Mewtwo - A pokemon should be in it, but why not Pikachu?

Yoshi - Becaues it's Gamefaqs

DK,Luigi Minor Mario stars and mid-tablers. I don't see what the point is in having them in it.

Ness - Has had his chance and proved to fodderish.

10 from each Square and Nintendo would satisfy me.

Ya know, I was thinking... there is a chance there might not be a cap, or it might be raised. Sp2k5 had 7 characters each from Nintendo and Square. Given that half as many characters were available I'd say it's reasonable that an equivalent cap wouldn't be as high as 7 if 10 for a 64 bracket is our basis.
