Contest Stats and Discussion - Part 144

If it doesn't come out tomorrow, I would expect it to be released closer to the beginning of July. Not in July, but closer to July 1st.

Well, that would make sense... I don't THINK Ceej has a time machine.

I think Kerrigan would have made it last year too, but I know that a lot of people (especially on the Brood War board) nominated "Infested Kerrigan" and they may have been counted as two separate characters. That problem doesn't seem to be present this year (for what's it worth).

I wouldn't figured Kerrigan and Infrested Kerrigan would be considered different; we know the Mega Man issue already.

You can find it online to download rather easily. But it was a game you bought in stores.

Not point-n-click. Operates through a keyboard interface. You can read an official review at Gamespot and I think IGN. It's from 98.

Grim Fandango is one of the last of the Graphic Adventure genre that is all but dead today. (There are a few coming out, including one for the DS.)

I actually think the DS has the potential to somewhat revitalize the genre... I also think that if someone made a WWII adventure game, and marketed it by only showing clips of cutscenes with a lot of gunfire and explosions, the genre could go through a FFVII-esque renaissance.

I still will never forgive Lucas Arts for stopping production on new Graphic Adventure titles. Bastards.

Can you blame them? I think the only way the genre could have MAYBE stayed alive would be if Blizzard ever actually released Warcraft Adventures, but they scrapped it right before it was done.

Well... Yeah, I can. It was two months or so away from completion. I think they left perfectionism get in the way too much. They had already put a lot of money into it, they would have gotten more profit releasing it than scrapping it.

Besides, it was 1998. The genre wasn't completely dead yet. And the stigma of being a Blizzard game alone would have pushed sales tremendously.

The genre was pretty well dead though. If you couldn't see it coming you weren't looking. People were calling GF the greatest game ever and the masses just sorta went "so?". It wasn't a poor seller, but it wasn't a really good one either. Besides, even when it was in development I thought Warcraft Adventures was a terrible idea. I don't know why they even thought about it, really.

Oh, and with Blizzard's perfectionist desires WCA would never have made its date, they'd have pumped hunders of thousands more into making it and they likely wouldn't have turned enough profits to make it a better option than droping it altogether. If they could have they'd have released it, after all.

Well, I was only 8 at the time so I don't really "remember" anything about it. The only reason I even know about it was because I was reading old Gamespot features a week or so ago. It sounded like a pretty good idea to me though. The story sounded cool. Was there any public outcry over it being cancelled or did no one really care?

I would assume Grim Fandango runs a lot like the Monkey Island games, which is a slow paced adventure puzzle game where you click and highlight where to move or what to investigate.

As for the Kerrigan issue, I believe Cjay said one time that the issue with a Starcraft character was a matter of all the Starcraft fans agreeing on one character to nominate and that "mass carriers" doesn't count as a character. It was an XD situation.

And lastly, I hope the bracket is released either at the change of the GFaqs day at 3am EST tonight, or in a week or so. Basically, I'm going on a cruise tomorrow and don't want my 9-night internetless vacation to interfere with the Summer Contest. Although if by some slim chance I do miss the bracket picking, I don't think I'll be too upset since I do get to go on a cruise.

Call me nuts here, but I'm goin' to make a prediction that's, by all means, ludicrous; we WILL see Gordon/CATS. I get the sneak in suspicion that CJay/lead mods has listened to the board some lately (Sephiroth/Ramirez, for example) and has helped influence the bracket to a degree. Should that be the case, I believe the board's outcry for Gordon/CATS cannot be over-looked (not to mention how often it was mentioned in my topic about what matches we wanna see this summer)...CJay could give a high seed to Gordon and say Half-Life 2 had to have helped his cause alot, then give CATS a seed higher than a 16-seed for impressing against Ansem and for being pitted in the first round against the past two champions.

Very possible.

Hmm, I seem to have missed some peach discussion further back. I can't ever remember her having a strong nomination party, or even a discussion of one, I know I definitely wanted her in, and still think she would do decently, but as far as board support, I never saw much discussion of her outside of this topic, and that was scattered, at best. I highly doubt she'd be a failure, but perhaps next year would be a better year for her, since she's having her own this year. (pretty sure, at least.)

and sorry if the grammar is disoriented, it's sort of late...

More data on my analysis of past contest data. Using the results of the least-squares fit, I calculated the expected and actual result of all 220 matches and compared the difference.

Not surprisingly, the match with the largest difference was Link/Ganon (2k4), with a 10.55% difference between expected and actual. After that, the next biggest difference was Link2k3 to Link2k4 - to constrain year-to-year variation, I simply made a fictional match between char2kx and char2k(x+1) where the winner had 50%. In other words, the model says that Link increased by 6.20% from 2k3 to 2k4. After that was

Link/Magus 2k3 (5.85%)
Mario/DK 2k2 (-5.67%)
Bowser/Mario 2k4 (5.53%)
Cloud 2k2/Cloud 2k3 (-5.15%)
Lara Croft/Crono 2k2 (-4.60%)
Ganondorf 2k4/Ganondorf 2k5 (-4.48%)
Sephiroth/Liquid Snake 2k5 (-4.44%)
Mario/Link 2k2 (4.28%)
Mario/Sephiroth 2k3 (4.20%)
Samus 2k3/Samus 2k4 (-4.19%),
Pikachu/Cloud 2k2 (-4.14%)
DK 2k2/DK 2k3 (-4.13%)
Cloud/Sonic 2k3 (4.04%)
Sonic/Samus 2k4 (4.03%)
Sephiroth 2k2/Sephiroth 2k3 (-3.99%)

The number is parentheses is expected minus actual, so a positive number indicates underperformance by the first character, and a negative number indicates overperformance by the first character. For year-to-year 'matches,' however, these numbers are interpreted differently: Cloud 2k2 never actually got 50% on Cloud 2k3. In these cases, a negative number is an increase in strength, and a positive number is a decrease in strength.

I can't see it being close now with Half-Life 2 out. Before then, assuming CATS increased some with the face pic, it most likely woulda been close...but now, while not a blow-out, should have the universe imploding.

I'd pick Gordon to beat CATS pretty easily. I don't really think CATS can win a match with the Eggplant pic, which he'll get in a first round match.

Yeah, I can see Gordon/CATS happening as a 4-13 or maybe 5-12 match, but the idea makes me sad since I don't think CATS can win it. I mean, forget the stats... can Gordon really be weaker than Ansem? It would be nice if CJayC shakes things up with the pictures a bit though, and maybe does faces in the first round.
