Contest Stats and Discussion - Part 144

Remember the Pokémon Yay or Nay? Pikachu is hated so bad, RAICHU got buttloads of nays for evolving from the little *****.

Yes, I remember Pokemon Yay or Nay..only for when I felt devious one day, and decided to drop into one of the topics and said "NAY! All Pukemon sucks!!! Pukemon, gotta puke 'em all!! Gotta puke"*gets shot at* Um..yeah, you get the idea, and how a certain Board 8 guy in this here topic (no names, he knows who he is) decided to mark my message, which got modded later. :-(

Anyways, what I wonder is how despite all this, Pikachu got in over Mewtwo in 2K3, and what reasons do we have to expect a change.

Nominations =/= vote getters.

We've seen a less-than-10%-on-Link guy get a 10-seed before, over pretty much every PC character in all creation, and look what happened.

There are a lot of people who would rather bite their testicles off than vote for Pikachu, but would happily vote for Mewtwo over 80% of the field.

SC2K5 nominations: Kefka, Magus, Samus, Link, Sonic, Frog, Knuckles, Bowser, Kerrigan, Yoshi

Mewtwo is a board favourite. I can attest to this personally, as in my (mediocre) Snubs Tourney, Mewtwo beat such board favourites as Dan Hibiki and Ecco the Dolphin, and tied no less an eminent figure as Meta-Knight. If Ol' Gamebreaker managed to earn a spot in a future Board Noms project, he'd have a good shot at a spot, while Thunder Rat would probably have to rely on the casual noms.

That's all good and all, but I just don't know if there's going to be any room for any pokemon to get in. Not unless the company limits are shafted, (which, if CJayC knew the definition of justice, would do)

Sometimes it isn't the main character who does the best...just look at how well Vivi did. I wouldn't be surprised to see Mewtwo be to Pikachu what Vivi was to Kuja.

Not what I mean. I'd take Mewtwo over Pikachu anyday in a match, terms of strength, who'd get more nominations, anything, but I just think other Nintendo characters will take spots over him.

Only the Summer 2004 contest was stirctly based on nominations. CJayC could have put Pikachu in the Summer 2003 contest due to status and not because it got a lot of nominations.

I thought SC2k4 had some underseeded characters and rigged the bracket a little.

You stacked the brackets!

Duh. But not as much as you'd think. The seedings are accurate as to the number of nominations a character got for the most part (with only 3-4 shifts up and down a seed or two, generally to more accurately reflect the number of expected votes vs. organized efforts to get a character into the bracket). Of course, I made sure to then arrange the seeds into brackets where we should get some interesting (read: hard to call) match-ups all the way through the tournament, and likely avoid a same-game/company final round.

I just remembered that only the top 32(1-8) were decided strictly on nominations. The bottom 32(9-16) were choosen by CJayC. The seeds are still more or less in order of nominations recieved.

I just hope that company limits get shafted. After that, I don't care how CJayC "stacks" it, as long as it's for legitimate reasons.

Slowflake:
because more than three FF7 characters would be kinda stupid.

What? Why?

It would be absurd for less than 4 Final Fantasy VII characters to make it, and really at least 5 should probably make it.

Remember: the objective is to make the contest as popular as it can possibly be. Company limits were supposed to help do this by satisfying diverse fanbases—but it has become eminently clear (and was pretty obvious before anyway) that they are detrimental to the contest's popularity and the total votes cast.

It is totally clear that there are a large number of Final Fantasy VII characters that deserve to make a 64 character bracket based on strength alone. The major problem is getting them nominations. If they don't make it by nominations, who do you choose? You'd have to interfere; fudge things. Which isn't an ideal solution. However, there should be no question that if 4 or even 5 FF7 characters somehow did make it through the nomination process (by some miracle), they should all be included—caps and limits be damned. That's what would be best for the health of this contest.

Emulating is... weird. And I suck with comps, so it took me forever to figure out how to get zsnes to work. Spoon had to literally explain it to me step by step as if I were an idiot, and with comps, I truly am. I suck with these things outside of the basic stuff.

No, it was just your comp telling you not to play Earthbound.

well, dang. i completely expected the bracket to be up by the time i got home from when i left early Tuesday morning. didn't noms close on Wed. or Thur.? i wonder what's taking so long this time. mebbe Ceej is on vacation? >_>

and since i saw people talking about extending the limits on Square and Nintendo characters, here's the characters that i definitely think should make it in if the limit was a full division's worth of 16 (not all in the same division, though, duh. =P) :

Nintendo (16):

Link
Mario
Samus
Ganondorf
Zelda
Bowser
Yoshi
Peach
Kirby
Luigi
Ness
Donkey Kong
Fox
Mewtwo
Geno (i think he belongs to Nintendo)
Captain Falcon (to test the SSBM factor)

Square (16):

Cloud
Sephiroth
Vincent
Tifa
Aeris
Vivi
Tidus
Auron
Squall
Kefka
Terra/Shadow
Mog
Kain/Cecil
Crono
Magus
Frog

It is totally clear that there are a large number of Final Fantasy VII characters that deserve to make a 64 character bracket based on strength alone. The major problem is getting them nominations. If they don't make it by nominations, who do you choose? You'd have to interfere; fudge things. Which isn't an ideal solution. However, there should be no question that if 4 or even 5 FF7 characters somehow did make it through the nomination process (by some miracle), they should all be included—caps and limits be damned. That's what would be best for the health of this contest.

You know, all these characters' chances being made or broken by how CJayC handles company limits this year...it's kind of hard for me to think (between the heat and all in here..fan needs to be 24/7) who has more of a chance based on what the company verdict is. Ok, moving on.

Man, hold on. We don't need to fudge anything. Who "deserves" to get in is strictly opinion. The one thing that's been over my head is people trying to convince everyone else who deserves this, barring the reality of what's possible, and granted, maybe I'm not clear myself on what really is. Hell, maybe I just want to forget about nominations and get on with what we thought we should have a long time ago: THE BRACKET! Now, if only 3 FF7 characters have the nominations and status CJayC thinks is needed to qualify for SC2K5, so be it. I feel like if Aeris couldn't beat Sonic with the FF7 power, how do we determine how Vincent and Tifa will do? About the same? Flop like Kuja? That's Russian Roulette; do we really wanna play with that?

All and all again, I feel like company nominations are going to be set to be more generous towards Square and Nintendo, and the board will get Vincent and Tifa in like they wished. However, that is only if they get the necessary nominations needed to get in. However, due to the short time given for nominations, the board weighs in more, and they'll get in. Otherwise...well, god help us.

Until I know that, just shaft Geno, and since he's from Square (I'm going to fourth..fifth whatever that Square owns him), put Wario in place of him in the Nintendo lineup.

Sora apparently belongs to Disney, so he doesn't count. Yuna is a decent alternate, but i really think Mog could do well. he is the playable Moogle from FF6 and was actually a pretty cool character. and not only was he on the cover of the American FF 3/6, but he as a Moogle, but he also represents one of Final Fantasy's most recognizable icons. i believe that wide recognizability and likability (i mean, who hates Moogles? how could anyone hate those lovable little guys? =P) could push Mog to being one of the strongest FF6 characters, possibly even stronger than Kefka.

I don't think Mog would do well. Have you ever seen a Mog fanboy? Being on the cover doesn't mean as much as you think. As Heckran, a boss from Chrono Trigger who happens to be on the cover of the game. I'd put Mog around 15% on 2k4 Link, probably a little less.

Man, what the ****?

Yes, let's just pull characters out of the ashes that have never made it before in the previous years this contest as run, and say they will outdue their predecessors from the same game. I don't get it. Is Mog even a board favorite? I've heard talk about Vincent. I've heard talk about Terra, Shadow from FF3/6. But, MOG?! I don't think he's going to get in even if he is as "cool" as you say he is, because he seems way too obscure. You'd have to shaft Kefka or Terra/Shadow too, because in no way does FF3/6 deserve three characters, IMO. Is that reasonable?

KH2 will not have an effect for Auron as it was for Sephiroth (who more than likely got a larger boost from it than Cloud).

Cloud > Sephiroth in 2002 makes a lot of sense, and KH2 and FFX are from the same generation of consoles.

He'll increase, but I don't think by that much.

Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary,
Over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore,
While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping,
As of someone gently rapping, rapping at my chamber door.
" 'Tis some visitor," I muttered, "tapping at my chamber door;
Only this, and nothing more."
