Explanation of Extrapolated Standings:
http://sc2k5.com/drupal/node/11

Simple Explanation of Extrapolated Standings:
A = Strongest Character
B = Character Weaker than A
C = Character Weaker than B
To figure out a character's Xsts Percentage ---> [(CvB)(BvA)]/50 = CvA
To compare how C would do against B ---> [(CvA)/(BvA)]*50 = CvB
To figure out how B would do against A ---> [(CvA)/(CvB)]*50 = BvA

The closing of the nomination process means that somewhere and somehow (I cannot guarantee it being a rational process) CJC is now creating the much anticipated bracket for the even more-anticipated SC2k5 Character Battle. Soon we shall find out who has been shafted, over seeded, bubbled in, and etc. What he is working with is a large chunk of Board 8’s Nominations, seeing the short nomination period and the even shorter front page announcement. Hence, Board 8 nominations may go a long way into deciding those characters that remain a question mark. The official topic has tallied up the votes…

So without further ado, I present you…
Board 8 Nomination Winners!

WARNING: You will disagree!

10. Vincent Valentine
Votes(Rank): 24 (14th)
PCS(Previous Contest Seeding): None

The subject of much debate for the last few days has been the FFVII figure whose uncertainty has had his guesstimated strength anywhere from the bottom of the Elite to straight down to the midcarders. This controversy and potential, however perplexing, is not the reason Vincent gains a spot on this list. Rather the desire to add another FF7 option to SC2k5 laid elsewhere. When the debates had ended, Tifa Lockheart inherited that mantle, and if that alone weren’t enough, those ardent enough to *SPOILER* revive Aeris to Summer Contestdom zapped some noms from the FFVII pool. Despite all this, the Chaos Beast garnered enough votes to make a respectable showing, much to the chagrin a certain someone. His Contest status probably still remains questionable, but if he does not get in, no doubt puts him on the map for next year, which would make him a bigger winner than this list suggests.
Congratz HM.

9. Samus Aran and Mega Man
Votes(Rank):
Samus Aran: 25 (12th)
Mega Man: 23 (15th)

PCS:
Mega Man
SC2k2: (6) Advanced to Sweet 16
SC2k3: (2) Advanced to Final Four
SC2k4: (1)(Overall #4) Advanced to Final Four

Samus Aran
SC2k2: (5) Advanced to Elite Eight
SC2k3: (2) Advanced to Elite Eight
SC2k4: (2) Advanced to Final Four

With all the random speculation that Clinkeroth may be removed this contest (guys, face it. It won’t), the chance for fresh #1 seeds and an easy path to the finals opened up. However, even with Clinkeroth’s presence, avoiding a 3 seed is pivotal if one wants an easy road to the Elite Eight, thus making a in droves, but every nomination counts. If nothing else, these two deserve spots here for making an easy push against Aeris/Zelda “They are Shoo-in’s so no one nominate them” Syndrome. Their eliteness may make that seem unlikely, but tell that to Crono’s 13 noms.
Shameless plug for the Blue Bomber: www.bobandgeorge.com

8. Princess Zelda
Votes(Rank): 33 (9th)
PCS: Advanced to Round of 32

“Yes, Zelda. I just bashed your ass for missing out on SC2k4. You would’ve walked straight through Sora and Yoshi’s 4 packs no problem, straight into the Sweet 16. What’s that? Never made the Sweet 16? Oh yea, you did get set up against the Blue Bomber.”

The above two reasons are more than enough reason for Princess Zelda supporters to breathe a sigh of relief for her 30+ Board noms. The Princess needs three things, to GET IN, to GET IN and to get in with a decent position. She’s undoubtedly 4th seed material (I’m trying to avoid that 3 seed curse against Kerrigan), but noms have screwed her in the past.

7. Link
Votes(Rank): 25 (12th)
PCS:
SC2k2: (2) Champion
SC2k3: (1)(Overall #1) Runner Up
SC2k4: (1)(Overall #1) Champion

Check where Cloud and Sephiroth fell on this nomination list. That’s the explanation for Link’s position here. When you’re on top of the world you don’t need to impress. Just hold your position and you’re fine. Returning Champs and Top-Tier Elites don’t need to make any moves if they don’t show any vulnerability (I’m talking to you Sp2k5 Sephi). End of Story.

6. Strider Hiryu
Votes(Rank): 23 (15th)
PCS:
SC2k2: (7) Advanced to Round of 32

When the nominations began, I thought to one of my favorite characters and removed him from my list which had to be narrowed. Without a second thought, I highlighted his name and game and hit Backspace. Why? I’m not one to waste my nominations on characters who aren’t going to even get close to making the contest. A one-year absence often means your supporters have left you because they believed you were in, but two years means they’ve left you, period. The support he has regained on this board may not be enough to bring him back if there is minimal support from front page noms, but he’s on the radar again.

MVC1
Ouroborous, Teleport, Mash, JSSF, CF XX JSSF, short, (double jump) JSSF, short, QCF+P

5. Terra Branford
Votes(Rank): 49 (5th)
PCS: None

Depending on whether she actually gets into the contest – her chances do look good right – might make Kefka’s struggles in past contests look like a blessing in disguise. Between FFVI supporters looking for more strength in their lead representatives than Kefka’s falters and the Board’s ability to finally agree upon a FFVI heroine to back, Terra became the beneficiary. Sure. She had to compete with Locke, Shadow, and Celes, but that makes her ~50 noms all the more impressive. Again, her status and even strength in the contest remain a puzzle, but she now has more hope in both areas than Kefka ever did.

4, Magus Zeal and Frog
Votes(Rank):
Magus Zeal: 32 (10th)
Frog: 23 (15th)

PCS:
Magus:
SC2k3: (13) Advanced to Sweet 16
SC2k4: (6) Advanced to Round of 32
Frog:
SC2k4: (6) Advanced to Sweet 16

Why am I so impressed with the finishes of these CT elite non-protagonists? Their results are respectable but by no means amongst the top nomination-getters. On top of that, everyone knows Board 8 is a haven of Magus <3 so expectations of a solid finish were expected. So why the place on this list?
Firstly, Crono’s flop in the board noms. Secondly, Magus and Frog were talked about as sub tiers who may be forgotten come nomination time because of their early exits. Each character also has personal reasons. Magus desperately needs a half division that he has a chance to come out of(SFF and Link = bad) and nominations may go a long way in assisting with that. While Frog’s run was somewhat long, I recall hearing that he would suffer in future contests because people would have lost interest. There are questions about him and that 4 pack that must still be answered for our sake as well.

3. Kratos Aurion
Votes(Rank): 37 (8th)
PCS: None

I was offered a couple of challenges with this decision. I originally had Kratos much lower on my list, ~8-10. I also had him originally grouped with Vincent. Why? They were similar of course, but how? Both are characters from popular RPG’s who in this nomination process, saw others (Tifa in Vincent’s case, Lloyd in his) become the Board’s beloved poster boy/girl for that game. Instantly, Vincent and Kratos became the prodigal son thrown away in the event of the newborn baby. However, they clearly had their backings and garnered enough votes to make waves.
So why is Vincent sitting at the bottom of this list while Kratos nearly tops it? Obviously, Kratos’ number of nominations influences that decision. But really, I just expected Kratos’ to have much more to compete with. After Mithos’ performance against Kefka, the push for a ToS character pointed directly to Lloyd. Everyone else seemed like a character that would be interesting to get in, but unlikely. Also, unlike Vincent, there lacked topics pushing for Kratos. Things seemed to be stacked against Kratos, but he delivered.

2. Board Consensus 5 (Tifa Lockheart, Lloyd Irving, Leon Kennedy, Sarah Kerrigan, Revolver Ocelot) Henceforth known as the BCV.
Votes(Rank):
Tifa Lockheart: 52 (4th)
Lloyd Irving: 56 (3rd)
Leon Kennedy: 44 (7th)
Sarah Kerrigan: 77 (1st)
Revolver Ocelot: 48 (6th)

PCS:
Tifa Lockheart, Lloyd Irving, Leon Kennedy, Sarah Kerrigan: None
Revolver Ocelot
Sp2k5: (3) Advanced to Elite Eight

I’ll admit it’s a cop out. Picking 5 characters for a runner-up spot. But let’s be serious. I’d predict that only 2 of the BCV would be in as shoo-ins (Kerrigan and Irving) if it wasn’t for the fact Sir Crono and the board consensus. While Ocelot and Leon may have made it in their own power, Tifa will likely be let down on front page noms and none would be as strong if they hadn’t been pushed for. Congratz on your success. I hope to see more consensus pushes.

Sarah Kerrigan’s dominance of the nomination topic cannot be understated. Upon crossing 40 or so votes she obliterated the competition and never looked back. When she gets in, she’ll undoubtedly have the board vote and is primed for another SC/Diablo run.
Leon became the straggler of the group. While one could argue that Ocelot lost some noms because we’ve seen his performance in the spring and that he lost his new character appeal, Leon has no excuse. As much as seeding doesn’t matter this may be the beginning of warning flares folks.

Bonus Fun:
Rank the BCV in terms of both contest strength and expected seeding.

So… what could top 5 of the top 7 characters, including the number 1 nomination receiver?

1. CATS
Votes(Rank): 61 (2nd)
PCS:
SC2k2: (13) First Round
SC2k3: (16) First Round
SC2k4: (16) First Round
Sp2k5: (5) First Round

CATS proved this spring that he is no joke. Other than the fact that he’s a joke character. Everything we thought we knew about him went out the window. If transitivity holds in any way whatsoever, his performance against Ansem proves that given the right matchup, he can come out of the first round. In addition, we learned that he has no vote cap and that the board vote does not simply carry him. Realistically, given a lack of front-page support, and the fact that “All Your base are belong to us” isn’t something that gets markedly stronger, a seeding he would need to actually win the match is unlikely. Even if he did get pushed to a 14 seed, it’s unlikely he could upset a 3 seed that wasn’t utterly plagued with the curse. However, possibilities are still out there, we just have to see what he gets. The nominations give it hope.
And if that weren’t enough, he needed get in to stay on par with Sephi as the only character to participate in all character contests.

Make your time!

Honorable Mentions:
The Boss: I shafted her. It’s not all about the final nomination standings. Live with it.
Meta Knight: Just like in this award hand out and years past, he will probably be bubble-douched after a strong opening round of nominations.
Zidane: Kuja’s folly is fresh in recent memory and you guys still want to see this kid give it a go? Impressive.

I'm too lazy to do losers... Maybe tommorow if well recieved.

Now let's predict that bracket

Round 1

\ (16) Fox McCloud
/ (8) Mario Mario
/ (5) Megaman
/ (4) Frog
/ (6) Chun-Li
/ (3) Zelda
\ (10) Yoshi
\ (15) Cecil Harvey

Zelda/Knuckles and Kratos/Cecil are hard.

/ (1) Tifa Lockheart
\ (9) Squall Leonhart
/ (5) Diablo
/ (4) Link
/ (6) Vivi Ornitier
/ (3) Samus Aran
/ (7) Bowser
\ (15) Carl Johnson

Only Terra/CJ was hard for me.

\ (16) Mewtwo
/ (8) Geno
\ (12) Serge
/ (4) Vincent Valentine
/ (6) Solid Snake
/ (3) The Boss
\ (10) Sonic the Hedgehog
\ (15) Ryu (SF2)

Lloyd Irving/Mewtwo KoAC/Serge and The Boss/Locke were hard. There's a rematch of Sonic/Aeris

\ (16) Laharl
\ (9) Wario
\ (12) Shadow the Hedgehog
\ (13) Crono
\ (11) Zero
/ (3) Janus "Magus" Zeal
\ (10) Kirby
/ (2) Leon Kennedy

Only Leon/Rikku was hard. I'll like to make note that only one 1 and 2 seed remains in this contest while all of the 3 seeds are still kicking.

Round 2

/ (8) Mario Mario
/ (5) Megaman
/ (3) Zelda
\ (10) Yoshi

Fairly easy to predict for round 2.

\ (9) Squall Leonhart
/ (4) Link
/ (3) Samus Aran
/ (7) Bowser

Another easy round 2.

/ (8) Geno
/ (4) Vincent Valentine
/ (6) Solid Snake
\ (10) Sonic the Hedgehog

Mewtwo/Geno could give us some problems or even the whole 4-pack. Sonic gets another rematch against Ryu.

\ (9) Wario
\ (13) Crono
/ (3) Janus "Magus" Zeal
\ (10) Kirby

Zero/Magus will be very interesting.

Round 3

/ (8) Mario Mario
/ (3) Zelda

Both matches are hard to predict.

/ (4) Link
/ (3) Samus Aran

2 Elite 8 material characters vs. 2 Sweet 16 material characters doesn't cut it.

/ (4) Vincent Valentine
\ (10) Sonic the Hedgehog

Solid Snake/Sonic could be a great match.

\ (13) Crono
/ (3) Janus "Magus" Zeal

Ouch this is going to lead a rematch.

Round 4

/ (8) Mario Mario
/ (4) Link
\ (10) Sonic the Hedgehog
\ (13) Crono

Nothing much can be said except that Sonic is the only Elite 8 character to make it to the Final 4 congrats.

Round 5

/ (4) Link
\ (13) Crono

...

Round 6

/ (4) Link

Another rematch against Link. After beating Mario is that his new target?

Also I would like to say that this was a very hard bracket to predict, but this has 2k2's Bad seeding leading to good matches and 2k3's We know about half the characters, but we can still manage.

There sure as hell better not be a lot of SFF crap matches like in the last contest. This time, the ONE thing I wanna see is one of the "almost elite" take down one of the "elite" to prove that some of the "elite" aren't elite anymore.

In other words, Bowser, Ganondorf, Zero, Aeris, Magus, Auron, etc. vs. Sonic or Snake.
