Samus vs Mario - Link aside, Mario is Nintendo.
Sonic vs Solid Snake - really wouldn't like to call this one.
Megaman vs Mario - I've always theorise that Samus, MM and Mario are a A>B>C>A loop.
Samus vs Megaman - see above
Solid Snake vs Mario - a bit easier than the Sonic match to call.

A 128 character battle would work just fine if there were no company caps (from the standpoint of minimizing fodder). The innate problem lies in having a bracket where 3 out of every 4 characters is either Square or Nintendo. I mean, you don't think we could list off 30 Square and Nintendo characters that would crack the Vyse fodder line?

Nono, not a piece, together. And if you think about character cap casualities, you will get to 30 a lot quicker than you think. Off the top of my head:

Barret
Tifa
Aeris
Yuffie
Vincent
Zidane
Seifer
Serge
Zidane
Zelda
Princess Peach
Toad
Ridley (I believe, not an xstat king)
Lavos (I believe, not an xstat king)
Dr. Wily (I believe, not an xstat king)
Wario
Yuna
Rikku
Wakka (debatable)
Mewtwo (though I am biased)

and I am sure others can add onto this list...

No she wouldn't. She's an optional character that nobody likes.

Being optional does not matter in a game that popular. And there's little backing the idea that nobody likes her, especially when you went and said that Barret would probably beat Vyse -- someone who is even less liked. The only FFVII PC character I would see having trouble beating Vyse is Cait Sith. Everyone else would probably do so, although the lesser ones like Barret and Yuffie would see more trouble than the others.

I would also expect some of the NPCs to be above Vyse's level too. And that's just from FFVII.

Any of the cast from FFVII are capable of making some noise in these contests. Even an incredibly minor character like Palmer would beat Vyse.

Tifa and Barret should be as strong as Aeris, if not slightly moreso. They're definitely the most powerful characters who have yet to be in a contest.

Well, here it comes, the obligatory overestimation of Square characters. It happened with Kuja, it happened with Frog, it happened with Magus, and now it's happening with the entire playable cast of Final Fantasy VII. People will not blindly vote for Final Fantasy characters, even Final Fantasy VII characters. If somebody like Yuffie or Barret isn't well liked they won't do well. Franchise voting only goes so far. I would have thought that the last contest would have proved that conclusively, but apparently it's a hard lesson to learn. Thinking random NPCs would beat Vyse is downright laughable.

You guys put too much stock in FFVII fodders.

Most casual FFVII fans like me only remember the "main" cast; Cloud, Sephy, Aeris, Tifa and Cid, since he's also in most FFs.

Others like Vincent, Barret and Red are easily forgetable if you're not hardcore.

The rest I can't even remember anymore.

Well, here it comes, the obligatory overestimation of Square characters.

It doesn't take much to beat Vyse. You're acting like they need to be some sort of well-liked, very popular character to get over that hump. That's anything but the case.

People will not blindly vote for Final Fantasy characters, even Final Fantasy VII characters. If somebody like Yuffie or Barret isn't well liked they won't do well.

They are not the most well-like of the PCs in FFVII, but no one is trying to make them out to beat someone strong or even a low-end midcarder. We're talking about fodder like Vyse here. Yuffie and Barret would both beat Vyse and I fail to see how one could possibly think they wouldn't.

You're vastly underestimating them if you think that the PCs would start losing to Vyse.

Thinking random NPCs would beat Vyse is downright laughable.

Random NPCs? No, I wasn't referring to the likes of Scarlet, Shinra MP #133 or anything like that. I was, however, referring to characters like Rufus Shinra, Reno, Rude, and potentially Hojo and Jenova. There's nothing laughable about thinking some of the major NPCs could beat Vyse.

This isn't just any Final Fantasy title who would be winning on merits of being related to Square. This is from FFVII and characters that play large roles in these games. None of these characters are unknown or so disliked that no one would vote for them enough to beat Vyse. Like I said, the only PC character who I would expect to lose to Vyse is Caith Sith.

I think RPGuy is way underestimating the other playable characters in FF VII, but I also think there's no way in hell someone like Hojo or Palmer could beat Vyse. In my opinion Tifa and Vincent are guaranteed to beat Vyse, Cid, Red XIII, Yuffie and Barret probably would, and Cait Sith might. I don't think Kuja is a worthwhile comparison to them, since he's from a less popular game and he's also not that popular within his game (obviously - compare him to Vivi).

For the record, the only playable characters I'd put under Vyse are Yuffie and Cait Sith. Barret was a "maybe" for a reason -- I'd pick him to win but I think it would be fairly close.

It may just be me, but I always thought Barret was much easier to remember than Cid. While I won't argue for this, I also enjoyed Barret more than I did Cid, too; that's not the case for everyone, I know, but that's my stance on that matter.

Wow, I can't believe how people are underestimating the power of Final Fantasy VII. People are debating whether Barret can beat VYSE? I'm not trying to say he would hold a lot of contest strength, but somebody just said that Barret, Red XIII, and VINCENT were forgettable? But Cid is not? Outside of Cait Sith, most of the FFVII cast would be able to do some damage in this contest.

If anything, I would think that Barret would be closer to DK than Vyse. I think they are kind of similar. How many hardcore DK fans do you know? But people still recognize and vote for him. I think Yuffie would probably get some of the same treatment as well. I think a lot of Final Fantasy VII characters would be able to defeat Vyse directly, although their indirect strength might not be much more (Reno, Rufus, Yuffie).

Also, while I think Yuffie and Cait Sith are iffy-maybe's against Vyse, I'd still take them both against Vyse. Vyse is practically the dead-line for me before we get into fodder...I don't consider Yuffie nor CS fodder.

As for the comparisons with Kuja about how you gotta have people to care for ya, you're exactly right...but then again, that was an NPC in the "non-existant" FF9 (and I also hear you don't even see him until the very end of the first disc). Yuffie and Cait, while they're also far into the first disc before you see them, are playable characters in FF7. I guarantee that both Yuffie and Cait Sith will be noticably stronger than Kuja (and AT LEAST as strong as Sin or Ultros, though I'll gladly take 'em both alot higher than that) from that stand-point alone. From there, Yuffie has a fanbase of her own (though I don't think she'd be much stronger than CS, if any, due to being a secret character and not having THAT big of a fanbase) and CS still gets alot of talk for sucking as much as he does.

Again, I stress that picking Yuffie and/or Cait Sith over Vyse is iffy, but I'd do it and I don't think comparing how Kuja did is fair.

Just in case anybody remembers, I'll throw in that I think I went on record saying a week or two ago that I'd take both of them to barely get over 20% against Link 2k4...I take that back, heh.

(and I also hear you don't even see him until the very end of the first disc)

While this is true, FFIX's first disc is really short. It's not much longer than the part of FFVII spent in Midgar (it may even be shorter, as I haven't played FFVII in a while). But even so, Kuja doesn't do anything noteworthy until the end of Disc 2.

I'm still not entirely sure FFIX is a good comparison. It's one of the more cult games in the series, and not nearly as mainstream as FFVII.

I wouldn't say every Turk would beat Vyse. I doubt Tseng or Elena could do it. But Reno and Rude -- the two most popular -- should be able to at least give him a close match and pulling out a victory.

FFVIII is probably a closer comparision. Outside of Squall, who would beat Vyse? I say Seifer, Rinoa, Quistis, and maybe the other three playable characters.

I would say the same thing. I would expect Seifer to do quite well in a contest, actually. Well above the level of fodder.
