Damnit!

I just got a message yesterday from the computer company saying that we are no longer under warranty. The idiots gave us a separate service number when they replaced the old computer and they didn't include the extended warranty with the new number.

I don't know when I'm going to get my computer back and now the contest is starting soon. ;_;

Man, I start having computer problems, and when I come back I find out the contest has been announced and I missed all the excitement. Going back to some old topics for a minute, here are my hopes for seeding:

1. Sephiroth
2. Snake
(3. Zero or Magus or someone at that level)

1. Samus
2. Crono

1. Mario
2. Sonic
3. Mega Man

1. Link
2. Cloud

I hate having Cloud and Link in the bracket. You either have to brutally underseed people or have no interesting matches. This setup at least gives you 5 good noble nine matches (Link/Cloud, Sonic/Mega Man, winner/Mario, Samus/Crono, winner/Sephiroth), and only one of them is before round 4. Other setups might give you one or two more good matches, but you'd have to have them earlier, which I hate.

I don't know why people are getting interested in a Sonic/Mario match. Sure, it might be SOMEWHAT interesting, but I don't see Sonic being able to pull it off. And I'm actually a Sonic fan. I'd much rather see the satisfaction of whether he can beat Solid Snake. Snake HAS done better against common opponents.

I'd actually like to see LOTS of people get shots at Solid Snake, mainly Bowser, Zero, and Magus. Also like to see a Crono/Mega Man battle with the winner facing Samus. Of course I have no idea what to do with Clinkeroth in that scenario.

I'd take Bowser over Solid without much trouble; if you don't, you assume Solid would get 40+% on Sephiroth. Considering Mega Man has beaten Solid twice and had last beaten him with about 57%, then considering Sephiroth has beaten Mega Man twice and had last beaten him with about 61%, then considering the drop Solid took between 2k3 and 2k4 and the drop Liquid took between 2k4 and Spring 2k5...there's essentially no chance of him breaking 40% on Sephiroth. The only real question that could make the winner between Bowser/Solid in question is if Bowser/Sephiroth is as legit of a match to use stats with as any other Summer match...which I think it's just as good or barely less accurate; I don't buy the malarky about it being next to useless due to it being a villains contest.

As for Magus and Zero...I'd take Magus, but not Zero.

...Why not, exactly? I don't see Sephiroth getting 60% on Mega Man again. It's kinda hard to work with the Spring Contest without assuming he weakened somewhat. Either that, or you have to assume that the Spring Contest was an entirely different ballgame, in which case Bowser's 40% means squat.

Sephiroth not breaking 60% on Mega Man, which I disagree with I might add, has nothing to do with Snake breaking 40% on Sephiroth. Mega Man is far more than just even with Snake.

Honestly, Sephiroth wouldn't be expected to do it even by the 2004 stats. It only matches up if Mega Man is unadjusted, in which case he's weaker than Sonic and Solid Snake comes in serious danger of losing to Squall Leonhart.

Mega Man should never have been adjusted to his 2003 level in the first place. He looked good in only one match and that was against Tidus. In every other match he either didn't meet expectations or just completely dropped the ball. Well, I take that back, he did do well against Solid Snake, but I don't doubt for a second that Solid dropped as well. Now, he certainly may not be at that unadjusted level completely, but he is not at his value the current X-sts hold him at.

Bowser held Sephiroth under 60% while Snake wouldn't be projected to with that full adjustment, which I have made clear that I think is incredibly wrong. So I don't see where the problem is in taking Bowser over Snake if you believe the performance by Bowser in the villain contest wasn't some strange oddity.

But Mega Man actually has to be completely unadjusted (or at least very close) in order to fail to break 40% on Sephy.

I took into account the eventual release of Advent Children which would help Sephiroth push above that 60% mark against Mega Man. However, that wasn't even the issue. Sephiroth is projected by the adjusted stats to break 60% on Snake, which puts him below Bowser.

Well, my whole beef is with the idea that Snake somehow COULD NOT break 40% on Sephiroth under any circumstances, and that Bowser would have an easy time winning, both of which seem ludicrous to me. It's very hard to say that Sephiroth is still at his 2004 level if you want to accept Bowser's performance as legit.

Personally, I don't think that performance would be something we would see again in the Summer Contest, but there's not much I can use to back up my point in that particular case. Just a matter of what you believe.

I would take Bowser over Snake, but not purely because of that performance against Sephiroth. I don't believe Snake is as high as his 2004 adjusted level suggests and that combined with what I think is a rather obvious Bowser boost, at least to some degree, and that would be a close match. But I could agree that choosing Bowser with no doubt in mind is rather wrong.

At the same time though I don't believe Snake has any chance of breaking 40% on Sephiroth.

Both of them could have benefited from some kind of factor that I'm not even about to suggest or some other odd occurence. Whatever the reason, there is far more saying would and will not break 40% on Sephiroth. Snake's absolute maximum is that adjusted level and that adjustment already is problematic in thinking that Mega Man simply stayed constant.

I recall you no longer believing in the 20XX adjustments after Sephiroth/Liquid, anyways, so that should be a problem.

According to 2k3 stats, Solid Snake would get 36.11% on Sephiroth. According to 2k2 stats, Solid would be expected to get 40.63% against Seph...but that's through a Crono that didn't have all of his cheat votes taken away and a Mario that, by all means, should have been the stronger Cloud instead if people are going to believe SMS/PGC kept those stats from being exactly right. If people still stand by those two common beliefs, Solid doesn't break 40%...

...though that does strike me as funny, what with him stomping Squall 65-35 in 2k2 and all.

I do wanna take back how easy I made it sound for Sephiroth to break 60% on Solid, but I still stand by my prediction that Seph would have 60+%. Besides, even if Sephiroth has dropped (which is still iffy if being in a villains contests screws up the stats), it's already been proven that Solid dropped majorly, and Liquid showed huge signs of dropping too (whether it's because of an irregularity in 2k4 or MGS falling off the face of the earth, you tell me).

What's the big fuss about Mega Man's adjustment, anyway? It's only ~2% (on 2k4 Link), it's not that big of a deal. If you say that Mega Man should only get some of that, HM, well, what difference is a 1% change going to make? The stats aren't accurate enough for that to really matter.

I already said I don't believe their performances were something we would see again in the Summer Contest. I do believe that Bowser got some type of increase, but not nearly enough to break 40% against Sephiroth. I think both of them overperformed for whatever reason one could think of. Maybe not a full overperformance, but one that would not have them breaking 40%.

Yes, that may not make a lot of sense, but neither did anything toward the latter half of that contest.

The problem with the adjustments in the 2004 stats is that you're now dealing with 2-year-old data, which is pretty unreliable.

When you adjust Mega Man, Sephiroth only gets 57.55% against him. When you unadjust Mega Man, Sephiroth gets 61.8% against him. That seems rather significant to me. And the adjustment is 3.6%, not 2%.

I'll give you that, but when you have an adjustment that makes multiple characters fall into place and it's not a huge change it makes sense to use it. And yes, Liquid certainly did bomb, but not adjusting him cuts 2% off of a 12% dive. Hardly even noticeable, and Kefka did what was expected of him.
