I'd say Seph SFFing Crono is unlikely at best. We're more or less in agreement that Final Fantasy VII didn't SFF Chrono Trigger, and Sephiroth had trouble SFFing Vivi and Auron, characters from his own generation and far less popular games. If Crono gains the same amount he did between 2k2 and 2k3 and Seph is still where the villains contest put him, Crono wins. It's a longshot, sure, but I think any SFF would be pretty minimal on either side.

As for the seeding, I definitely hope that Mario gets the 1-seed he deserves. Should Clinkeroth be gone, he's a lock for it...if not, dammit, he still deserves it.

Mario does not deserve a No.1 seed after to losing to Crono, of all people. I love him to death, but if he's not stronger than Crono this contest, I think he deserves a No.2 seed at best, and..probably a 3rd at worst.

Also, a little bit dies inside me whenever I hear reference to banning our past contest champs. They'll lost fire one day, I'm sure of it. Everyone does.

I think Mario/Sonic could be good, given Shadow's performance in 2003. I'd never pick Sonic to actually win, but meh, who knows. We've needed to see that match for four years now and haven't come close.

Not in 5 years. FF7 is almost 8 years old and it's still the most popular game on this site. With all the new FF7 stuff coming out, I don't see Cloud or Sephiroth taking a dive anytime soon. Link gets a new game every year or two and a hugh blockbuster every few years. I don't expect him to fall anytime soon either. If they do lose it's because the characters below them have gotten stronger.
