Contest Stats and Discussion - Part 139
From: RPGuy96 | Posted: 6/3/2005 12:15:15 AM | Message Detail
Extrapolated Standings on 2k3 Link:

I used six of the returning characters (Sephiroth, Ganondorf, Bowser, Kefka, CATS, and Luca Blight) and did the ever so fun least square differences analysis using my lovable TI-89. These are my best guess for the character's value on 2k3 Link, but I give no guarantees of their accuracy.

1 . Sephiroth 42.48 %
2 . Ganondorf 35.54 %
3 . Bowser 34.37 %
4 . Diablo 24.69 %
5 . Revolver Ocelot 23.38 %
6 . M. Bison 23.26 %
7 . Kefka 22.67 %
8 . Dr. Wily 21.27 %
9 . Nemesis 21.20 %
10 . Ridley 20.91 %
11 . Liquid Snake 20.46 %
12 . Ansem 18.17 %
13 . Lavos 18.16 %
14 . Vergil 18.00 %
15 . CATS 16.70 %
16 . Dr. Robotnik 16.59 %
17 . Mithos 16.33 %
18 . Sin 16.15 %
19 . Mother Brain 16.06 %
20 . Ultros 15.30 %
21 . Albedo 14.68 %
22 . Sigma 14.21 %
23 . Ramirez 13.88 %
24 . Master Hand 13.44 %
25 . Wesker 13.43 %
26 . Andross 13.22 %
27 . Ghaleon 12.80 %
28 . Kuja 12.43 %
29 . Pyramid Head 11.08 %
30 . Luca Blight 10.82 %
31 . Giygas 10.53 %
32 . Officer Tenpenny 8.36 %

Changes:
Sephiroth -4.08%
Ganondorf +0.82%
Bowser +3.40%
CATS +3.34%
Luca Blight -2.42%
Kefka -0.08%
Liquid Snake -11.64%

Interestingly enough, this is approximately the same as keeping Kefka constant. A final note: I didn't use Liquid Snake to calculate the least squares because his 2k4 value is so far off that it drags everyone else down considerably. I don't know why it's off by so much (nearly 12%, ouch), but that's my reason and I'm sticking to it. Now I'm going to bed; I'll post my all time stats tomorrow.

I have to echo the sentiments of others: Why the HELL is Kefka in this poll instead of Bowser?

The only explanations are the Ceej plum forgot what the Final Four was and had Kefka in his head as making it, or some sort of bias.

Nice work RPGuy. Good decision to exclude Liquid from the optimization.

One thing I was mistaken about: I expected Robotnik to be stronger than Wily. Turns out Wily was fairly impressive, and stronger than Robotnik. I really didn't expect that.

So, I suppose speculation now begins anew on what the nature of the new wrinkle in the Summer contest will be.

I wonder if Ceej will come up with something that people have speculated on before, or something totally out of the blue.

I kinda hope it's not something totally out of the blue, because I don't trust Ceej to come up with something no one else thought of yet is still a good idea.

For some reason I expect Ganondorf had SFF'D Robotnik in some weird way, this also means that Robotnik managed to SFF Masterhand which would explain why Kuja is so low as he is.

It's funny when every single odd match and misplaced stat is explained away with nonexistant SFF. Kuja just plain ain't popular.

For a Final Fantasy Character to be THAT unpopular is kinda hard to swallow. I agree with you though.

Not THAT hard to swallow. Aside from Sephiroth, Final Fantasy villains can be at most decent and at least terrible.

It's worth noting that Ganondorf isn't in the poll either. His option says, "No, Ganondorf was much worse," meaning to imply that people would have voted for Seph in the finals simply because Ganon sucks.

Villains are meant to be looked at in that negative manner. CJayC simply views good villains as ones who are horrible, mean characters. The ones you are suppose to hate.

Hot damn. After everything Ocelot had to go through, he STILL finds a way to rank 5th, and Wily and Nemesis are both in the top 10 (that's even more unbelievable than Halo, if you ask me).

The average score of all BOP brackets is 69.4. So that means I'm barely above average on the board, which isn't so surprising considering how pitiful I did, but when I look at my overall rank I'm in the top 2000 with almost 25000 brackets around. Wow, people truly do suck at this thing.

I have to go to work soon, so I didn't get a chance to read up on all the discussion yet, but here are my thoughts for now: Now I want to see Kerrigan in the contest for the sole purpose of seeing how badly she'll lose. While I probably can't convince you, Diablo >> Kerrigan, and I have no idea where Arthas fits it. I know StarCraft is insanely popular, and I completely agree with you that even though multiplayer is the big deal, the vast majority of people who play it have at some time or another played through the single player campaign, but you have yet to convince me that the casual StarCraft player cares for Kerrigan as a chracter, enough to vote for her.

As for FFVI characters, in terms of contest strength, I'd say Terra or Shadow (I don't have it in front of me, but Shadow won the poll for favorite FFVI character, though of course multiway polls are not very accurate for predicting 1-on-1 battles) would be the strongest, then a slight dropoff, then Locke, then Celes, and then a dropoff to the rest.

Despite being in an 11-way tie for 4th in the Guru challenge, I got totally owned by Yoblazer.

Agreed. If I can show up in the Top 500, then people just aren't very good at predicting.

I don't think FF6 characters are far apart at all strength-wise, but I'd take Mog over everyone else just like I'd take Vivi over everyone in FF9.

I can see there being tiers to FF VI characters' popularity, with a sizable gap between them.
Top: Mog, Kefka, Shadow, Terra, Celes, Locke, Edgar
Middle: Cyan, Sabin, Gogo, Leo, Ultros, Setzer
Low: Banon, Relm, Gau, Umaro, Strago, Geshtal, everyone else of importance

Sabin would be a top tier FF6 character, IMO. At the least, he's one of those characters that nearly everyone used on their first time through the game so he's got recogniztion over the sizable cast. I bet he's a little more popular than Edgar at least. Though I like Edgar better.

I was wondering if I could get a few supportive members to help me drum up support to unite behind a single FFVI protagonist.

I'll help if it's Terra or Locke; I don't wanna help with Celes though. I like Locke the best, but Terra would likely do better.

I think that the strongest FF character to not be in a contest yet would be Vincent, maybe Cid.

Nope, give me Tifa please.

You can never have too many FFVI characters.
Unless one of them is Umaro or Gau.

Word.

I am also highly disappointed at the lack of a Bowser option on that poll.

Word x 2.

The average score of participants in the contest was 55.0146.
The average score of all BOP brackets is 69.4.

Hey, I'll take my 73/80 and be happy.

Still bitter about Kuja's egg. Additionally, fun to know that averaged Link would beat himself by a couple % points. And don't put disclaimers up with such stats! If anyone is naive enough to want to base a match off of those completely skewed (for whatever reason it may be) stats, then let them. If you have not noticed yet, at least 25% of the people making brackets have no chance from the get go, and at least another 50% submarine themselves along the way. The more of the remaining 25% we can get to use those stats... the better =)

Just for the hell of it, I put RPGuy96's numbers on the previous page into a 128-character bracket. Fun stuff. I'd definitely bet against the seeding (however skewed it may be) in some cases. Some interesting matches, too (Ridley vs. Vyse, Viewtiful Joe vs. Lavos, HK-47 vs. Pac-Man, etc.). The best one, IMO, is Kefka vs. Pikachu. I'd honestly take Pikachu.

Whoa, a set up in which Tidus and Knuckles can both win more than one match. Interesting.

Not too many upsets from that list, of course some of the characters most likely upset another are placed far away from eachother by the bracket.

I think you could make a compelling argument for the following upsets:

Lavos over Viewtiful Joe
Vyse over Ridley
Vergil over Bomberman
Pac-Man over HK-47
Lara over Kain

I think you could make a not-so-compelling argument (but still fun upset picks) for the following:

Pikachu over Kefka
Tina over Claire

After the second round I don't think I have any upsets (except Ganondorf over Sonic).

Cool bracket. I might try my hand at it when I come back tonight, or maybe tomorrow.

Good to see I'm not the only one unsure of Link's capacity to repeat, too. If the rumors are true and AC gets a worldwide release smack dab at the end of the contest...

Oh, and also, WAY TO SHOW UP YOUR SUPPORT ONE WEEK LATE, KEFKA FANS.

This is a shame. Why did Diablo have to face three of the only four villains I'd vote over him?

99 CATS 13.87
100 Ramirez 13.85
101 Gordon Freeman 13.85

We HAVE to have CATS vs Gordon Freeman this summer. That would be the best match ever.

Random trivia: CATS and Sephiroth are the only two character that have been in all 4 character battles.

And CATS might be the first to make 5 if Sephiroth gets retired.

For the... thousandth? time, no one is getting retired, as stated by Ceej himself.
