Viewtiful Joe might not have been a good example. I was trying to think
of a post SNES-era game not from a big series, but that still was
popular.

Everything is relative, but there comes a point where anyone in the industry would laugh at something being labeled "cult".
In terms of sales and media coverage and gamer awareness, Metroid is in no way close to being cult.

Well, Viewtiful Joe has cult-like sales, though Capcom's trying to push it toward the mainstream.
Yeah, exactly. Metroid Prime 2: Echoes was not a "cult" game, it was more of a "flop" (no offense to fans). Some games (Disgaea being a pretty obvious example) are marketed towards a niche. Others are marketed towards a large audience, and simply fail.
Though I would say the Viewtiful Joe is mostly a cult game, because of the characteristics of its fanbase.

I think this is where we're collidin' with different viewpoints; I
consider DW cult as anything, for example). Also, before FF7, the only
RPG I had ever tried to play was the original FF, and I both despised
it and came up short when I looked for anybody else who had played it
before back then. They may be the most popular of the RPGs, but if they
were before FF7, then I can't help but consider them pretty cult
regardless of their status. I'd guess CT and FF3/6 are the two most
likely for me to be wrong on, but they were still widely unrecognized
by many (I would guess that no more than two out of every five people
who consider themselves to not be complete stereotypical casual players
will have heard of CT or FF3/6, though that's not provable and is just
a guess).
Again though, I think we have different viewpoints on the guide-lines for a game to be cult.

An RPG doesn't have to do as well as FF7 to be mainstream. And if any
game brought RPGs into the mainstream, it would be Pokemon, THEN FF7.
...and Dragon Warrior is not cult. >_<

If you were around back then, you wouldn't think Dragon Warrior or
Final Fantasy were cult. They were very well known and highly promoted,
and always ranked high in the Nintendo Power rankings.
Dragon Warrior/Quest as a series has become cult in the US, but the original wasn't.

Last comment, then I'll move on and drop this arguement: I don't think
games named after franchises like TMNT can be cult unless their sales
were utter and total ****.
Now...Wesker's goin' down and losin' hard; I think he's gonna do just a lil' worse than Mithos.

Dragon Warrior/Quest as a series has become cult in the US, but the original wasn't.
The original Dragon Warrior can be found everywhere, and it even had a TV commercial. And while the series has faded in popularity in America, it still outsells Final Fantasy in Japan.

Heh, I was around, but I don't recall ever seeing those games at my
rental stores and the original FF kinda turned me off from them for
awhile. Plus, I got a Genesis instead of a SNES, so that likely played
a part in it too.

I actually just remembered a Dragon Warrior cartoon that came on
Saturday mornings. It was probably the first anime I ever heard of,
though back then I didn't know what anime was (I don't know whether I
even realized the cartoon was imported back then).
I never woke up early enough to watch it though. I remember wanting to see it real bad, but I only saw like one episode.

It's because Samus had an awesome move-set in SSB, HM. She was the most
fun for me to play... many of the characters were aggrivating to
control (Yoshi, Ness), the rest were typically boring (Mario, Link).

Oh, and I didn't dislike those characaters. I love Link, but in SSB he seemed boring to me, and I wanted to be good with Ness but I really didn't want to take the time to learn him since he is rather awkward.

I don't even remember who I used in SSB before I got Ness on it, now
that we're talkin' 'bout SSB...maybe Captain Falcon or Link? I'm not
sure anymore; it's been years; I just know once I got Ness, I never
turned back.

Yeah, Lavos' strength is surprising.
I guess maybe Chrono Trigger's fanbase is pretty loyal, and will give all the major characters substantial support.

You missed the whole convo. Someone said that Metroid was cult. Based on that, I was naming a bunch of games that would also be considered cult if Metroid was. Virtually all of the popular games that aren't from a big name series would be cult.
I actually liked using Luigi in SSB. I think he was a bit more powerful than in SSBM. Same for Kirby. I like using Link, but he is a tad slow. Thank god for the addition of Young Link in SSBM.... Also, there's no excuse for Wario NOT to be in the next SSB game. Other people I would look out for are Krystal, Diddy Kong, and possibly another Pokemon. And Captain Olimar, if Nintendo wants to add an obscure character....

As I recall, SMRPG sold ~2 Million copies in the US, more than every
single non-Halo series Xbox game. Therefore, every Xbox game is cult.
As is every PS2 non-Madden/GTA game. It also means that the PS2,
despite having ~30 million sales in the US, only has ~10 million casual
gamers, the other 20 million are cult gamers. It's good to know that
there are more cult gamers than mainstream gamers.

If there is another playable Pokemon in the next SSB game, I would
guess that it would be Deoxys or a Plusle+Minun group. I'd love to see
a playable Tyranitar but it's a bit late at this point in time.

22-----34-------79.4117647
21-----357------84.3137255
20-----1052-----73.0038023
19-----1971-----69.9137494
18-----3103-----63.1002256
17-----3649-----58.6187997
16-----3910-----52.8388747
15-----3601-----48.2921411
14-----2897-----45.2191923
13-----1789-----40.5813304
12-----1057-----35.0047304
11-----593------36.9308600
10-----300------28.0000000
9------154------25.9740260
8------87-------18.3908046
7------29-------10.3448276
6------29-------10.3448276
Nobody with a score of 5 or lower got the match correct. The -1's did best this time around with the perfects not too far behind. Chances are getting slimmer of seeing a perfect bracket at the end of things.
11 people fell off the Top 50 today. Ambivalentiowa, Spearfish_4Ever, AeroY2JNet, drock121, ShadowZero23523, KojimaFreak, leenarov, FreezeLancer, DrewBattousai, _Imaginary_ and UMDMarshtan did not have Liquid Snake winning this match.

Kefka doing great so far.
A finish in the 60's is pretty assured I would say.

Well Nemesis > Wesker is pretty much COMPLETELY official now. And it
even looks like Nemesis is greater by quite a margin. Sad day for true
Resident Evil fans everywhere.
