Contest stats and Discussion - Part 126
From: jonthomson | Posted: 5/18/2005 3:58:13 PM | Message Detail
well, here's the odds of there being a perfect bracket:

there are really 4 matches in question left:

Ocelot vs. Dr. Wily
Diablo vs Bison
Robotnik vs. Master Hand
Kefka vs. Diablo/Bison

so, if you multiply the potential winners (2x2x2x3), you get 24 potential brackets. that means we have a 1/24 chance of their being a perfect bracket.

Let's assume they're all coinflips. Ocelot-Wily kills 1/2 the brackets. Diablo-Bison kills 1/2 of those brackets. Robotnik-Master Hand kills half of those brackets. Now here's where you go wrong - Kefka-Diablo/Bison won't be three separate choices, because those who got the first one wrong will already have had their bracket busted - the only perfect brackets at this stage will, by definition, have got Diablo-Bison right, so you're having 1 in 16 coming through, not 1 in 24.

Actually, since Bison/Diablo would be a coin-flip too, that makes it 1/32.

Been a while since I've posted in one of these threads.. a LONG while..

I had Sephiroth winning this tournament, but now I'm having doubts. Bowser and Ganondorf have won impressively and I honestly wasn't that impressed with Sephiroth's win over Ramirez. Ganondorf's gonna cruise right into the final four, Bowser should win his bracket.. I'd think it's Bowser vs. Ganondorf now in the finals.

Don't. Sephiroth is still far and away the favorite to take the contest. Unless the new Zelda information suddenly shot Ganondorf through the roof, Sephiroth will win.

I should hope so.... This has nothing to do with Diablo at all. SSB and SSBM have nothing to do with Metroid. If anything, this makes Bison look better since he did almost as well as MH in the upset poll before the contest.

I did call that he would start a massive gain at about 3 EST actually. It's the after-school vote. Master Hand and Master Chief enjoy many similar benefits:

A) Mainstream appeal.
B) "Master" in their name.
C) My supporting them.

lol, I'm not caught up yet, but XD

and yay for Master hand!!!!

I agree, but I think this is a half-full/half-empty deal; I assume he meant he thinks M. Bison won't be as impressive as MH was, thus helping Diablo out.

We've been over the PGC thing before, it may have been enough to Mario over the top but it wasn't enough to make up the huge gap between him and Cloud. SMS simply did far more than PGC.

Word. Adjusting with Alucard and Tails gives us a 58-42 Cloud victory or something along those lines. Interference from one site can make up a 1000-vote deficit, as has been proven with HaRRicH's experiment, but 20000 votes? No. It was SMS, an act of God or both.

Kuja 46.5% 25762
Master Hand 53.5% 29638
TOTAL VOTES 55400

For what it's worth, I would worry about my Robotnik > MH pick if I didn't have Ridley in the Final Four; I thought MH'd win today and with about 52%, and I think Sin > Kuja too...but he's not stopping. He just keeps going, and I never thought Kuja'd be too far off from Sin.

God, this match next round will be great.

Does anybody still think there's cheating/major-linking going on? I believe this has been going on longer and more heavily than MC had going for him, SSBM > Halo (hell, maybe SSB > Halo if Starcraft really was at its peak against SSBM and not Halo), and there hasn't been any sites found with front-page linking. There's also almost no way there's a board that'd continuously bring in this many votes when some front-page links couldn't do the same.

But the thing is, the vote totals are roughly in line with the Sin-Robotegg match. If there was substantial cheating the totals would be much higher. If there is only a small amount of cheating then I doubt that would change the outcome of this match.

Some stats:

It took 1:35 for Master Hand to go from a 3000 vote lead to a 4000 vote lead. That's 10.5 votes per minute.

It took 1:15 for Master Hand to go from a 2000 vote lead to a 3000 vote lead. That's 13.33 votes per minute.

It took 1:05 for Master Hand to go from a 1000 vote lead to a 2000 vote lead. That's 15.4 votes per minute!

Master Chief and StarCraft have absolutely nothing on Master Hand. Conversely, Kuja is far, far more pathetic than any of StarCraft's opponents or Frog. Thankfully for Kuja, Master Hand is slowing down.

I recall SSBM being cheated against, and I remember the "mascot" of SSBM (Mario) being cheated against. I just don't see it being likely that somebody took it upon themselves to cheat for this long and continuously for Master Hand now.

Question: Think about every playable SSBM character...who would you take Master Hand over in a one-on-one match (consider SFF)?

I've been thinking lately...

Is it possible that Sephiroth might not end up winning the contest?

Because if Ganondorf approaches 85% on Ansem...he might have a chance of winning. Maybe. However small that chance might be.

I mean, how much stronger can Ramirez be than Ansem? Like Ansem, he barely does anything in his game until you near the end. Surely he has more prominence in SoA than Ansem does in KH, but...that's why it's a longshot. >_>

And as far as comparing Ramirez to Ansem... There's no comparison. Even if he's just Galcian's errand-boy, he has a decent role in the game and is actually a good boss fight. As far as character goes, I can at least fathom why someone could like Ramirez.
