Explanation of Extrapolated Standings:
http://sc2k5.com/drupal/node/11

Simple Explanation of Extrapolated Standings:
A = Strongest Character
B = Character Weaker than A
C = Character Weaker than B
To figure out a character's Xsts Percentage ---> [(CvB)(BvA)]/50 = CvA
To compare how C would do against B ---> [(CvA)/(BvA)]*50 = CvB
To figure out how B would do against A ---> [(CvA)/(CvB)]*50 = BvA

Because if I wait until 500, a mass of people start making a billion stats topics, and it got so bad at one point that mods had to delete all but this one for trolling. We've been over this a thousand times now, and if you don like it, too bad. No one is forcing you to post here.

No no, was just wondering why. But that's a good reason and I can see why you start it earlier. Lots of people like to take over other people's topics once they reach 500, saw what you described happen a few times. Sorry for the interruption ;p

Triforce Division: Round 1 - Match 13 – (1)Ganondorf vs. (8)Giygas

Moltar’s Analysis

Ganondorf
Game/Series Known From: Legend of Zelda Series

Finally, our LoZ representative Ganondorf! The 1 seed he has also makes me happy.

Giygas
Game/Series Known From: Earthbound

Oh boy, good ol’ 8 seed fodder. Great…just great.

Well, I’m going to keep this short, mainly because every time I try to spell Giygas, God kills some sort of cute woodland creature.

Ganondorf is from the LoZ series. You know, the one with Link! Ganondorf is also a strong competitor in the Summer Contests. Now unless his opponent is freakishly strong, which he shouldn’t be, Ganondorf has this thing in the bag.

Only a small bump in his path to the title.

Moltar’s Bracket Says: Ganondorf will win

Moltar’s Prediction is: Ganondorf 81% - Giygas 19%

Ulti’s Analysis

Giy-WHO? Seriously, Ganon is the second strongest character in this contest by far. I can't see anyone touching him before the finals.

Prediction: Ganondorf with 78.33%

Soul’s Analysis

After we had the huge match beforehand, we're left with a squash match. Ganondorf will win this one easily. Earthbound is too cultish to win, and since it won't get the Nintendo vote, it will get SQUASH'D! Ganondorf with the highest victory of the round with 90%. This 90% will show to everyone that he is a powerhouse, and he will make the finals. Of course, some people will doubt Sephy's win with this blowout though, but to those people: IT AIN'T HAPPENIN! Seph is going to win.

Outback’s Analysis

The third piece of the Triforce in this contest enters the ring

Ganon or Ganondorf? This probably won't make a difference, but don't be surprised if we don't see a single match pic involving Ganondorf from OoT. "Ganon" means WW and LoZ. This probably won't have much impact on his strength, but it'll be interesting to see.

I don't really know much about Giygas, but I hear his battle is one of the most intense boss battles ever. That's not going to help him against the Zelda villain, though.

Ganon 76.56% Giygas 23.44%

Inviso’s Analysis

Okay, finally, a match that could be a bigger blowout than Pyramid Head vs. Bowser. FINALLY! Ganondorf is the second strongest villain in this contest, despite getting SFF-ed to hell and back by Link in the 2004 Summer Contest. He’s from the Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, the second most popular game on this site, and from Super Smash Brothers: Melee, as the most powerful CPU character (damn you Ulti and your always beating Princess Zelda-ness)

Gigyas…I still don’t know what the **** this thing is. It’s from Earthbound, which is cult as hell, and it’s main character is weak, even AFTER getting pumped from Super Smash Brothers: Melee. Ramirez, Mithos…I had heard those names before this contest. I may not have known them…but I did know the names. Earthbound is cult as hell and there’s no way this match will be difficult to predict.

My Prediction: Ganondorf with 85.43%

If Ganondorf gets more than 85.62%, PH > Giygas.

We might as well call it a lost cause for Giygas before the match even starts then. He'll likely get about 25-35% of the board vote then rapidly drop below that amount. Maybe I'm just being to pessemistic.

He might have been slightly weaker against Cloud in 2k4 also due to more people pushing to support Cloud against Link... don't know what the prediction percentages for that were though. In 2k3 it was no holds barred. Plenty of things can factor in for a final. I wouldn't trust much of anything for a final match.

For those wondering, my adjusted numbers for Auron and Vivi look something like this:

Auron 33.56
Vivi 29.10
Donkey Kong 25.34
Scorpion 23.59
Ness 23.46
Jak 21.08

They're on a slightly different Link than what cn uses, but not much. Auron was arrived at by assuming a constant Auron/Tails relationship, and Vivi uses a constant DK.

Oh no... I never talked about anti-champion votes. I meant ANYTHING. I think the voting in a championship slight differs from other matches. Not worrying about protecting a character. Not really worrying about brackets anymore (except for Cloud/Link for those that still had hope for Cloud). I'm not trying to name all the possibilities. I was just agreeing with you about Cloud/Seph 2k3. Of course that total goes against the concept of the stats.....

Maybe because they figured out that Cloud had the best chance of taking out Link? I'm not saying this affected voting OVERALL... I'm just talking about in comparison to Cloud vs. Seph in 2k3.

This match is going to be a joke. It's going to be a freaking bloodbath. Giygas, who has no real pic nor real presence in Earthbound, against the second-strongest character in the contest? Giygas, who has his name and name alone to rely on votes? He's relying purely on Earthbound fans, which aren't even that strong a force, and even then he's a weak villain. Hell, I love Earthbound, and I don't think Giygas even has a chance to get above 10%.

Ganondorf will be getting at or near 90% in this match. This is one of the most unknown characters to enter the contest. At least with Ness, he had the luxury of being in SSB/SSBM. Giygas has no such thing. What's more, his picture is almost not even visible. No doubt this'll be the biggest blowout of the contest. In light of the match, and a small dedication to one of my favorite characters...

(The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker Spoilers)

A Tribute to Ganondorf

My country lay within a vast desert. When the sun rose into the sky, a burning wind punished my lands, searing the world. And when the moon climbed into the dark of night, a frigid gale pierced our homes. No matter when it came, the wind carried the same thing… Death. But the winds that blew across the green fields of Hyrule brought something other than suffering and ruin. I coveted that wind, I suppose.

It can only be called fate. …That here. I would again gather the three with the crests. …That I should lay my hand on that which grants the wishes of the beholder… That when power, wisdom, and courage come together, the gods would have no choice but to come down… The power of the gods… The Triforce! He who touches it will have whatever he desires granted! Already, the crest of wisdom is mine… All that remains…

Ughnn… Heh heh… The wind… It is blowing…” -- Ganondorf

I'll be honest and say I'm not convinced that Ganon is definitively the second strongest in this contest. Something tells me to back Bowser...

I suppose that Bowser vs. Ganon may have had some SFF or other possible complications, and that this will give us more accurate rankings. But Bowser vs. Ganon would indeed have been fun.

It's Liquid Snake that's really the one screwed over though. Poor guy.

I wouldn't be surprised if Ganon broke 93-94%, personally. My prediction is WAY off.

I... can't think of anything else to say, really. I'll probably lose my perfect bracket to Robutt/Sin, but I don't care all that much. Though there are people who have Fatass who don't feel the least bit confident in him, so who knows.

I honestly think Giygas could manage up to 20% in this match. I won't guarantee it, and there's every indication that he'll do much worse than that. I just think it's a bit of a stretch to have Giygas performing worse against G-Dawg than Pyramid Head managed on Bowser.

Looks like we'll have a fair number of zero brackets.

I'd say that even if there are upsets in Robotnik/Sin and Kuja/Master Hand, not all of the 24 will be wiped out.

And if there are no upsets, we should have a good dozen zeroes.

Also I'm a bit surprised that Ganon isn't going up in percentage at a much faster rate.

Giygas' pic is freaky though. That's a pretty scary image.

We still have a large number of perfects, and there's not that much contest to go, really. We're almost halfway done.

With the fall of Ridley also comes the fall of the BOP. Since it also had Ridley coming out of the 2nd round, the chances of it ranking very high like in previous contests is pretty much nil. The guru consensus picks also suffer the same problem but has Ridley also winning Round 3. I think that was the only difference between the BOP and the guru concensus picks so this time the BOP will rank higher.

Blizzard's seeding underratedness should have something to do with a lack of an organized/devoted board contingent, but high mainstream appeal.

The community around here doesn't seem too into PC gaming, but since people do access websites from computers, large segments will have played popular PC games--and Blizzard has some of the best selling PC titles of recent years.

Or something like that.

At least halo.bungie.org and diabloii.net have lingered around the edge of the 20,000 most popular websites, and planet-megaman.com is in the top 100,000 most popular websites more times than not (and occasionally has huge spurts; about three weeks ago, it outdid halo.bungie.org and diabloii.net for a day or two)...but starmen.net hasn't been in the top 100,000 sites in at least a year, and it'd have been fortunate if it ever did crack it.

I don't know about 90%, but he'll definitely get near it.

Right now, if we assume both Bowser and Ganon were correctly adjusted for 2k4, Giygas finishes with 14.91%, and there is no SFF in today's match...Pyramid Head would get 48.19% on Giygas, and Giygas would get 49.19% against Guybrush.

I gotta ask, who would win between these one-match-only-and-got-SFF'd-to-hell Nintendo characters: Giygas or Captain Olimar?

I gotta ask, who would win between these one-match-only-and-got-SFF'd-to-hell Nintendo characters: Giygas or Captain Olimar?

That's a toughie actually... I'd probably have to say... Giygas. I have no solid reasoning, it's just a feeling.

Interestingly enough, assuming there's no SFF in Mario/CO and Ganon/Giygas and that there's no SFF in a CO/Giygas match (as well as if Giygas finishes at 14.81% on Ganon), then Captain Olimar would lose with 43.01% of the votes.

Where would Ness be at again if Auron was adjusted by Scorpion 2k3 or Tails 2k4? 'Cuz right now, if Giygas stays at 14.64% on Ganon (assuming Ganon's placed right in 2k4 stats), Giygas gets 24.79% on an unadjusted Ness...I'm sure Giygas is much further away from Ness than that.

Why would Twilight Princess be silly? I know English is my second language, right after gibberish, but what about that title evokes even half a chuckle? If it were real I'd be quite satisfied with it, it does in fact sound rather cool to me.

Using the completely unadjusted stats, with Giygas at 14.66 on Ganondorf... Giygas beats Tanner with 55.46%.

Using Tanner's adjusted number (Link-MM SFF), Giygas STILL beats tanner with about 50.42%.

It's not really chuckle-provoking, it's just one of those names that make me think "Come on.....", like I know Nintendo can do better. Now, the title may possibly be fitting and well-deserved, but I still feel like it's not attention-getting or interesting for a sub-title.

According to the unadjusted stats and assuming Giygas is not SFF'd and stays at 14.66%, Tanner gets 44.51% on Giygas. Hot-damn, you gotta love Tanner.

Been saying that exact thing for weeks now, noone listened. Apparently they just don't realize that EB has that hardcore of a fanbase. I'd be willing to bet that Ness gets 0 nominations for his appearance in SSB/M and that all of his nominations are from the EB hardcore, and that's a faction strong enough to get him into the upperhalf of noms by a fair margin. Having as many devout fans as someone like Magus is clearly some good.

Saying that you're going to simply pass up what should be a really good game just because of its title is dumb. I'm sure if Katamari Damacy had an english title it'd have sold better too. A title doesn't make the game. Haven't you ever heard the saying "don't judge a book by its cover"? It's a good saying, and apparently it should be tattooed to the back of you eye-lids. Triforce Division: Round 1 - Match 14 – (4)Ansem vs. (5)CATS

Moltar’s Analysis

Ansem
Game/Series Known From: Kingdom Hearts

Some Disney guy makes his way into the Best Villain Contest…interesting.

CATS
Game/Series Known From: Zero Wing

I could use a CATS joke here, but really, it’s already over-used enough.

ALL YOUR VOTE ARE BELONG TO CATS!

Ok…I couldn’t help myself…but really, when the brackets were first released that night, CATS fans jumped for joy. CATS finally had a chance to win a match. I mean, who was Ansem?

Then it clicked, “Oh…the guy from Kingdom Hearts.” And just as quickly as they were brought up, they came crashing right back down. Oh well…I’m sure their temporary high was something to be proud of, or something.

Anyway, for all those serious bracket-teers, CATS = Instant lose, and that’s no difference here. Sure, he managed to score a 5 seed and sure, he isn’t facing a Link or Cloud, but there is still no chance for the evil kitty cat.

Now excuse me, a ball of yarn is calling my name. Mmmm….yarn.

Moltar’s Bracket Says: Ansem will win

Moltar’s Prediction is: Ansem 75% - CATS 25%

Ulti’s Analysis

This match should prove once and for all that CATS is nothing but a joke entrant. It's the easiest match he'll ever have, and I fully expect him to get slaughtered, anyway.

Prediction: Ansem with 78.55%

Soul’s Analysis

This match is one of those hyped matches that are not supposed to be hyped. CATS will come nowhere near victory here. Ansem is from a popular Square RPG. CATS has a few memorable lines. Some people will use the argument about CATS making it into the Summer Contest every year. Yes, CATS has a few fans. All of them nominate him in. Hell, CJayC probably nominates CATS as well. He's just an awesome character.

But, as FF7 Vs. OoT showed us, being more awesome than the opponent does not mean a win. Ansem is from a popular Square RPG. I realized I said that before, but just let that statement sink in.
.
.
.
.

Ansem is no doubt going to win this. RPG's dominate this site, more than any other genre. That's enough proof you need right there. Besides, despite what the CATS army says, CATS isn't that popular. The only thing that he has going for him is the horrible translation. That's it. Well, maybe the Bohemian Rhapsody parody done CATS style will give him a bit more votes, but still not enough. By the way, I <3 whoever created that parody.

Ansem wins, and I'll go with around 70% of the vote.

Outback’s Analysis

All your vote aren't belong to CATS

I'm sure you've never seen that joke before. Anyway, this match is one of the easiest matches for me to pick in this contest, even despite the CATS craze and Ansem's nobodyness.

I consider CATS to be a contest phenomenon. CATS is incapable of garnering over 15000 votes, as proven by these exhibits.

A: http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/index.html?poll=1718
B: http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/index.html?poll=1313
C: http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/index.html?poll=967

No matter what the vote totals are, CATS won't get over 15000. Ansem wins.

Ansem 73.45 CATS 26.55 %

Inviso’s Analysis

NOBODY EXPECTS THE DELL DUDE TO BE ARRESTED BY LADY MIAOW IN POLAND! Anyway, CATS is perhaps the most random and bizarre villains EVER. And he gives me an excuse to type stuff in CAPS. Ansem is from Kingdom Hearts, the main villain that you fight not once, not twice, not thrice, but four times. He’s actually a pretty cool villain, as opposed to the running gag that is CATS.

CATS…How are you gentleman? What happen? Well, somebody set you up the bomb. You have no chance to survive, make your time. All your base are belong to Ansem. This is perhaps the most intentionally stupid thing I’ve ever written for the board, but I’m proud to have done it. This match will be easy. Non-cult>Cult

My Prediction: Ansem with 58.01%

So, are you ready for the bloodbath on 2101, Way to Destruction? I am. And as usual, it's going to be painful. Well, it wasn't so much last time since he faced Link and all, but whatever.

If people are expecting tomorrow's vote totals to actually be noticeably low, you're going to be wrong. I don't know why there seems to be so much Ansem underrating here, he is part Square, ya know, and being from Kingdom Hearts is more than enough to warrant a decent vote total anyway. Ansem will be no weakling; not that it takes much of anything to beat cats...

I'm expecting Ansem to be very weak, even for a Square character. No matter how he performs against CATS tomorrow, he'll be put into his place -- very low, mind you -- once Ganon rips him apart in the second round. I'm not sure what reason there is to think that Ansem will be anything in the way of strength. The spread you set out for him is something that Dante would be expected to get. He's not even on level with Kefka, much less Dante.

well, perhaps I'm biased towards Ansem *nominated Ansem* but I'm not really seeing reasons why he wouldn't do well.

Kingdom Hearts has been shown to be a strong competitor in the spring contest, and Ansem could really do close to how Sora would, because it isn't out of the question for Ansem to be close to Sora. Sora is...unbearable at times, and Ansem really didn't suffer from that as much, in my opinion. I expect him to be a force to be reckoned with, or at least not laughed at, and I think he'll show that in his match against Ganon.

Why? He's rarely even mentioned until the end when he shows up, and even then he's just several really long fights that keep screaming DARKNESS at you.

I agree with Heroic Mario on Ansem's strength. However, how the heck did he get a 4 seed?

Somehow, he must've been a popular nomination, but as far as gathering votes...I find it hard to believe he'll even show well tomorrow.

Ansem will be nowhere near Sora. I think the Ansem/Sora relationship will be something like the Albedo/KOS-MOS relationship. Both villains don't make appearances until late in the game, although Albedo is definitely memorable once you see him. Ansem is easily forgotten.

Ansem is mentioned a lot throughout the game though. I mean there's Ansem's Pages, or whatever they're called all along. I dont' know how it worked in xenosaga, but it isn't too much of a stretch to say that if you know Kingdom Hearts, you know Ansem.

CATS would be blown out against Tanner, for God's sake.

That's a joke, right?

The whole talk about CATS having some sort of upper bound # of votes seems kind of silly...against real opposition, that is probably true - there are only so many people who would vote for CATS over someone they have at least some sort of positive association with. However, once you drop into the lower fodder categories, characters are either unloved or unknown. People continue to vote in these matches, and although we've seen vote totals are often lower in matches involving jokier characters, vote totals dont dissapear altogether - people might not be as motivated to vote if one of their favorite characters isnt up there, but it doesnt mean that they won't vote at all. For someone absolutely unknown, this could still hurt them, but CATS is far from completly unknown - in terms of Internet fads, he is far more than just a Board 8 phenomenon. He'll be able to pull a good number of those half-apathetic people who vote in the polls regardless of who is there.

Ansem will win, but it wont be the proportions necessary to drop CATS anywhere near Tanner. All things considered, I wouldn't be surprised if CATS could double Tanner head to head.

but it isn't too much of a stretch to say that if you know Kingdom Hearts, you know Ansem.

Actually, that is quite a stretch. You hear his name, but for a while, you think it's just some dude who did research on the Heartless. You actually meet him on Destiny Island. You just don't realize it's him until you're almost done with the game.

All this respect people are saying Tenpenny deserves because he's voiced by Sam Jackson, and nobody says anything about Ansem being voiced by Billy Zane? Crazy people.

Previously I thought that this match would finally disprove the ridiculous "CATS vote ceiling" idea, but if Ansem does have a lot of massive casual support like Slowflake has talked about, CATS might still fail to get 15K votes.

Ansem is very unpredictable. He could get from 60%-75%.

I wouldn't think that Ansem had any strength at all because of his apparent obscurity within his own game. It's the non-board nominations thing that's his main hope, I think.

Ansem won't be anywhere near Sora, but even if he gets doubled by him stat-wise, that still puts Ansem at 19.72%, right around Vyse's level. That would give him 66.12% against CATS tomorrow.

If he were to get tripled by Sora, that'd put him at 14.81%, which would result in a 55/45 win for Ansem over CATS. This is probably his extreme floor.

Well, I'm not entirely sure I care about being invited to 820 since most of the people I like talking to are here, though I am curious as to what it's about.

Anyway, I think you're all fools for underestimating Ansem. It doesn't matter how prolific you think he was in the game or what your opinion of him was, he was in that game and he was popular enough with the front page to make it over dozens of characters that the board favored more. Look to Vergil if you'd like to see what that means for a character. He won't be a push-over by any means. Besides, I'd consider it equally difficult (if not more so) to become familiar with Sephiroth in that game and yet you were all so willing to believe his very minor part there was enough to propel him upwards by about 7% on Link. I'm not saying that KH has a huge affect on anything (I never really believed it was that huge of a difference) but I am saying that you should have learned by now that you simply cannot underestimate that game.

Too many of you were quick to count Sora out just because of a bad match with Aeris, and 2k4 totally proved you wrong. Too many of you called KH weak and a disappointment for its match against SC until the XSt came out and said that it was still in the upper quarter of games. Seriously, you can stop embarrassing yourselves by no longer engaging in the biased and severe underestimations of KH that you have so actively pursued in the past.

With the Ansem topic, I think he will put up respectable numbers but won't be that strong. I can't see him going in the Ocelot range as someone said.

I think CATS will fit his way in between what Ryu got, and what Sora is 'expected' to get. I think in a real match, Sora gets well more than that, under my (and many other's) theory that CATS only has so many votes in him. As for now I am thinking high 60s percentish sounds about right.

I knew the final wouldn't be competitive, and I figured Ganondorf wouldn't be great at drawing votes. I also took into account that this isn't really a "serious" contest and all the fodder would hurt the overall vote totals. Also, Seph/Dorf is scheduled to be on a Thursday. As long as it isn't held on the Weekend, the vote total will be lower. 90K still doesn't seem like a bad prediction to me, but it can be eclipsed.

M. Bison did much better than I expected, and Diablo did better than I expected too (while I had Ridley, I knew it was a toss-up and thought neither'd win by more than about 57%)...I expected about what Kefka showed though, so I'm not worried about his performance. I think Diablo's gonna take the division now though. If (MM-adjusted) Kefka > Diablo, Ridley is allowed no more than 50.11% against Vyse; the worse Kefka would beat Diablo, the worse it would make Ridley look in a match too close to rely on the stats for...against Vyse, my floor for respectable performances (not counting characters unaccounted for irregularities/SFF like Protoman). I think Ridley's stronger than that (right now, Duke feels right).

Work with me here; at first I had both Ridley and Diablo pegged side-by-side and right inbetween Tails and Kefka. Regardless, the point is I don't buy Ridley = Vyse, so if Ridley > Vyse and transitivity/X-stats hold true, Diablo would beat Kefka. Would anybody else take Ridley over Vyse?

With that, I'm gone to bed. Vote for CATS, please.

Ya know, I just had a thought. I find myself liking some characters more in a contest setting than I do regularly and vice-versa. For example, I've been a Zelda fanboy since I got my hands on the first gold cart, but in terms of the contest I'd actually rather see Mario win than Link. In fact, my love for Alucard (heh, I was one of the ones who pegged him pretty well in 2k2, too) started out as an appreciation of his contest abilities (playing SotN since makes him the uber badass in my mind that he should be in all others).

I never saw both of them being above Kefka as a possibility. Either one would prove dominant (like Diablo has) and would be able to put Kefka between himself and his first round opponent or they'd both fall below Kefka. I only use unadjusted stats for MM's division in 2k4, and I see Kefka as being about equal to Duke. That said, I'm going to say Duke > Ridley, at the least.

Oh, and since my opinion has shifted as it has in the last couple weeks, as much as I hate to say it I'm seeing a strong possibility that Kefka doesn't make it out of the division. Whether it's Bison's or Diablo's is unclear to me (I'd take Bison > Diablo today...) but no matter how close I try to make it I still keep seeing Kefka behind BOTH of them in terms or who has the best shot of winning the division.

What exactly is this board though? I tried going there and it gives me a " You are not authorized to view topics on this board. You must be a member of this board and have a high enough user level to use it." message.

Steve hasn't yet posted in the invite topic confirming who is in or not. It usually takes a day or two. As for what the board is, CJayC created boards 810-820 on last year's April Fool's Day. Hacked is one of those boards, and Steve decided to popularize it again. If you get in, you'll see a sticky topic explaining things.

And how did you find out about it?

Because I'm awesome.

And I also saw an invite topic on CE and signed up.

And even if you have played FFX, that pic is rough. Sin may cost me this contest, because that's the only match I think I'm going to miss.

I still think Sin can pull it off. Think about it:

1) FF7: I know it seems farfetched, but look at the Sephiroth, the main villian and "best" so far from the FF series

2) PS2 and the release of FFX: I know a crapload of people played this game because of reason #1 and it's for the PS2...the graphics, some casuals thing of FFX as the best because of the graphics and the upgrades from PS1 to PS2

3) Ridley Vs. Diablo: This is basically the Robitnik vs. Sin match up. We got an old school villian vs. something evil that people can think about in a heartbeat. Diablo is to satin...and Sin is to satin related items.

But the only difference that makes robotnik weaker is that he was on sega (and not nintendo...don't ask me why...its just a theory). But this also makes Robotnik stronger because he's been in so many sonic games compared to ridleys one.

My thoughts on the upcoming pictures:

Sin: what is that? It looks like Dr. Robotnik vs a waterfall.
Kuja: Looks like the Trance Kuja fans got their wish.
Ocelot: That pic makes me feel good about having Wily in my bracket.
Lavos vs Liquid: One of the worst matchpics ever.
Angel Kefka: Kefka gets his first decent contest pic ever, but it's still only recognizable if you've actually beaten the game.

And of course...

I think pics matter more (a) in extreme cases, when one character looks really bad, and (b) when the characters are less known, because if you don't know the characters, what else are you going to vote on? In an average match they probably don't matter much at all, but in this contest they may matter more than usual.

I would take a bullet to my bracket's temple if it means we can see CATS be projected, unadjusted, for 2004 to defeat Ganondorf next round. I probably could die a happy man if he holds this lead 23 hours and 50 minutes longer.

Err.. i don't know why you make this seem like it's an Upset, if it wasn't for diablo, i'd have a perfect bracket with CATS winning.

It's not just that CATS has a huge following, Ansem is falling prey to the Albedo syndrome!

Nobody can really recognize either of them.. i've played both games, and i remember the main character, shoot even the 2nd rate characters 10 X more than the villian...

Plus that pic just rules in CATS favor

The difference between the examples you bring up and this match here is that the board vote was pushing down a known entity that was probably going to win anyway. No one knows who in the hell Ansem is, and even the people who do know him realize that he's just a pathetic boss fight and little else.

Ansem may very well be gone. Talk about an odd way to lose a perfect bracket.

The fact that Ansem is from a Square game that sold multi-millions mades it a little odd that he would be suffering from Albedo syndrome.

But Kingdom Hearts has always surprised people with it's strength(Sora kicking Ryu's ass) and it's weakness(Spring Contest?)

My theory is that this board vote is being exaggerated by the fact that its a Sunday night. Kids who go to school will tend to be asleep, vs. if it were Friday/Saturday. Only the "hardcore"/older crowd is up now.

And Sin, Ocelot and Diablo are getting screwed by those pics (if they matter).

I was 50/50 on Ocelot vs. Wily before...but right now, I'd probably change my pick to Wily if I could.

Not really. Some people seem to have gotten carried away with this, but there's really no way CATS will win this. The board vote took him out to an early lead, and once that wore off, it's been fairly even. If CATS can't increase his lead at this point in the match, before we even get to the day vote, he's already done for.

Well, as people have stated before, we had good reason to believe Ansem was quite weak. As we have seen, a villain's prominence in their own game is important. And Ansem reportedly has very little prominence in his.

The best argument for Ansem was front-page nominations. And one would think those people haven't voted yet.

But Ansem certainly seems to be carrying the "flop" label right now.

Yes, it looks like the idea of CATS having a completely inflexible fanbase has gone out the window. This potentially means that given the right opponent, any character/game can win a match.

The (anti)Official Obituary of CA(All your base are belong to us)TS:
A recap of this early morning’s events:
The board/midnight vote favored CATS as expected. However, the inevitable, ominous question loomed over the faithful at Board 8: How long could CATS keep this up? Surely not for long.
Ansem 45.5% 455
CATS 54.5% 545
TOTAL VOTES 1000

Then something happened, or didn’t depending how you looked at it. CATS held on. Not just to the lead, but the percentage per update as well.
For half an hour,
Ansem 46.2% 924
CATS 53.8% 1076
TOTAL VOTES 2000

And then an hour,
01:00
| Ansem | 01344 47.17% |
| CATS | 01505 52.83% (Up 8)

Then, the down turn began. The burning flame of CATS supporters began to be drained, vote by vote, and the tide began to turn in the dark favor of Ansem…

01:15 (Down 16)
01:30 (Down 27)
01:45 (Down 30)
02:00 (Down 39)
02:15 (Down 33)

Until finally, the flame went out.

Millions(or not) lamented CATS wonderful struggle and sang the most painful dirges of his defeat.

“damn, there goes the fun. I'm going to bed.” - transience
“It was fun while it lasted. Maybe next time CATS.” – Team Rocket Elite
“2 hours and 23 minutes. CATS should be comended. Joke, tradition, whatever. I loved every minute of it.

”I hadn't pressed F5 that much since Frog/MC” – the icon ownz all
“Same here. These were the best 143 minutes this board has ever experienced and I'm sorry for those who couldn't be here.” -- Vlado

The Phoenix tears awakened within CATS. The Board 8 devout had lost its faith in him, but he would not go away. It may have been divine intervention, a bunch of the Board 8 faithful rallying their sources, or perhaps “someone set us up the BOMB,” but he would not go away. He would not go home early. He would not cave. He was Reggie Miller not wanting to retire. He had nothing left to lose and everything to play for.

CATS 50% 2762

“WE GET SIGNAL.” -- transience

CATS would not be satisfied by merely tieing. He was going to make a statement. His lead pushed into the double digits. Then it began…

Back…
02:45 | Ansem | 02814 | +0183 | 49.96% | CATS | 02819 | +0195 | 50.04% | Lead of 0005 | (Up 12)

And forth…
03:00 | Ansem | 03013 | +0199 | 50.07% | CATS | 03005 | +0186 | 49.93% | Lead of 0008 | (Up 13)

And back…
03:15 | Ansem | 03251 | +0238 | 49.95% | CATS | 03258 | +0253 | 50.05% | Lead of 0007 | (Up 15)

And forth…
03:30 | Ansem | 03550 | +0299 | 50.03% | CATS | 03546 | +0288 | 49.97% | Lead of 0004 | (Up 11)

And back…
03:45 | Ansem | 03869 | +0319 | 49.99% | CATS | 03871 | +0325 | 50.01% | Lead of 0002 | (Up 6)

And this back and forth nonsense has been pushing for almost an hour now with 80% of the time, a lead straying not far from the single digits.

We are nearing our 4th hour of the Ansem/CATS marathon. We have seen more lead changes than the rest of this contest combined, a match to rival Starcraft’s road to the Elite Eight/ Ryu vs. Jill/ Frog vs. Master Chief/etc. , and a match that will burn brightly in the minds of Board 8 junkies anytime Spring Contest 2k5 is mentioned. However long this may last maybe a mystery. The day vote may quash all chances of a nailbiter… but CATS has left no doubt that he might be able to take on anything…

A final poll before bed…

and if this match isn't full proof that pics DO make a difference, then i don't know what is. i truly doubt Ansem is as weak as previous CATS levels, but i think people can actually recognize CATS as the " all your bases" guy. i knew the face pic would help him, but i didn't think it would give him a shot at winnning. man.

Robotnik has a serious advantage over Sin with that picture, if you ask me.

Kuja and Master Hand both got a good picture.

Bowser has one helluva nice picture, as does Sigma. Bowser's is better, of course. =p

Wily has a better picture than Ocelot, no doubt.

Sephiroth owns his picture.

Lavos got the shell!

Kefka got a solid sprite. Better than Wesker's.

Bison > > Diablo.

My views on all the pictures. Short and simple, but hey.

Okay, I think Ansem's got Turd of the Round locked up now. Heck, Turd of the Contest, period. I woke up and voted expecting to see this match wrapped up, and Ansem's only leading by 100?!

Glad to see Kuja got his Trance picture. That rocks beyond measure. I know a lot of Ocelot fans will be glad to see he got his young version picture. I can't even recognize Vergil in that picture against Sephiroth.
