Contest Stats and Discussion - Part 122

Dear hardcore Ridley supporters:

I'm glad to see that at least Doma and Slowflake can the loss well. Diablo winning isn't cjay's fault, it's not diabloii.net's fault, and it's not the voters' faults. it's just the outcome of a popularity poll. in a closed gamefaqs members contest it may have been a closer match, but really what you have is the villain of two games that were both pc game of the year vs. a villain who is a popular subboss in a well known series. it was a tough one to call and it was a bracket breaker, but it's all part of the contest. also, domo is right about the diablo picture. i've never seen that art before in my life and i was addicted to diabloii for 4+ years. if someone would've showed it to me without the name i probably would've guessed it was Ifrit from FF at first glance. anyways, gg no re.

Spring2K5: 11/11 Next Pick: Diablo (woot)

Diablo's going to face Kefka. Whether he wins or not...well, we'll see. But I'd never put a fighting character over Ridley, now.

Spring Contest 2005 - Points: 11/11 - Matches: 11/11 - Rank: 00001/24748 - Today: Ridley - Tomorrow: Ganondorf
From: Heroic Viktor | Posted: 5/14/2005 8:26:54 AM | Message Detail
You also wouldn't put an influential demon over Ridley either, so don't take it too personally if few take your comments seriously.

Additionally, I have a sinking feeling that Wily will be defeating Ocelot. For the past three contests me and my friends have always filled out brackets, and since I am the only one who follows it with any concerns, I give them some advice on picks where they aren't sure who will be more 'popular.' For both of these contests, all of the picks we have differed on I have gotten right, and they have gotten wrong (Vivi/DK, Ryu/Jill, for example). However, it is always the picks that we are certain we know which way the match is going to go that we end up missing (Starcraft, SSB:M, Sora/Ryu). Ocelot/Wily has all the makings of that pick. We just wrote it off to MGS3 giving Ocelot whatever extra boost he may need to take out Wily. Until Ultros was fodder of CATSian proportions, and Nemesis actually has something resembling contest strength, Ocelot might not even make it a match.

Yeah, I've been rather concerned about Ocelot/Wily.

Unless Ultros is the crappiest character on the face of the planet, I think Wily's got it won.

I think people are underestimating the hell out of Nemesis. He's more recognizable then Wesker, me thinks.

Plus, his name is NEMESIS. You can't go wrong with a name like that.

And as for the popularity comparison between Wesker and Nemesis, take this from a person who has never played a Resident Evil game: I knew who Nemesis is several years ago, but I had never heard of Wesker until this contest.
From: Slowflake | Posted: 5/14/2005 9:04:36 AM | Message Detail
Heh, I knew of neither.

Either way, what Ocelot did was what we would've expected him to do to Jill. Ouch.

People are actually thinking diabloii.net is doing something in this poll? They account for maybe 1000 votes, max, and that's a conservative estimate. Diablo would still be creaming Ridley without any outside help.

...oh wait, it was just Tai. My mistake, carry on.

Leave it to outside forces to ensure that Diablo cost me a perfect bracket. ****...bye bye, Ruin Divisional winner in my bracket.

That was me who said that. I realize Diablo was winning before the link was put up. I just don't like how the unlikely event of a comeback is now next-to-impossible. I'm not too sore though, as I can now stop worrying. Sucks I had Ridley going to the Final Four though, heh.

Diabloii.net won this for Diablo, not Diablo.

Exaggerated. It ensured the win, but I'm pretty sure Diablo woulda won anyways with this kind of gap.

At last, the Sage of Board 8, Steve Illumina, foretold an upset weeks ago and it came through!

Yeah, well, you picked Luca. Touche. =P

Metroid chokes in this contest every time. When the chips are down, metroid stays down

See: Sonic VS Samus, 2k2.

Duh. It was no secret that there were going to be links on the major fansites for several characters.

I guessed they wouldn't help the character though...I guessed wrong. Meh.

Others will complain that the picture has a major impact on this match, and it was rather unfair. I disagree.

Agreed.

Diablo winning isn't cjay's fault, it's not diabloii.net's fault, and it's not the voters' faults.

Yes it is...yes it is.

I would definitely put Diablo over Ryu.

That'd make Ridley, what, be about on Yoshi's level? NO.

I haven't played Diablo, so I gotta ask: Is he any different from Nemesis (as in, is he more than just some really tough monster you're supposed to beat)? I know Ridley isn't, but I feel the need to ask about Diablo at the moment.

He is the driving force for the whole game. Technically, yes, he is just another monster to beat on your way to going through the game leveling up and collecting items. But story wise, he is the story. Your mission of the game in Diablo 2 is following Diablo and to kill him and smash his soulstone. So I would say he is more important to the story then Nemesis is.
