Contest Stats and Discussion - Part 113
From: Tatl | Posted: 5/3/2005 10:38:18 AM | Message Detail
This year's entries sucked for me though. I took one look at the list of contenders and instantly decided not to run for prizes. I've only heard of 13 of the entries and only know like 6 (M. Bison, Bowser, Diablo, Ganondorf, Robotnik, M. Hand) from actual experience with them. The others (Seph, Luca, Lavos, M. Brain, CATS, L. Snake, Kefka) I only know by name. And then there's all the entries I don't know. Knew right away I wouldn't get very far with an entry for prizes. So, I got a fun bracket.

Epona would own you. By the way, I think the only one to be able to get lower vote than Tanner..... is Tingle. Even joke voters wont touch that.

Even if Wily is a little bit stronger than Protoman, I'm still pretty confident that Sin can drop Robutt's fat ass. To tell you the truth, I'm more worried about Sin over Kuja than I am Sin losing to that fat bastard.

Pac Man? Crash? Donkey Kong?

I second that. Pacman twice, as well, in the character and games contests. And hopefully Master Hand and Dr. Robotnik as well.

Guess what? Only Pac-Man didn't lose to a square character, but that's offset by the fact his game lost to Metroid, a Nintendo game. And Master Hand and Dr. Robotnik would both lose to Square characters as well,.. and all Final Fantasy characters (including the "so-called" big shots) too...yeah. XD

Yes yes. Sin CAN win. My faith is revived to 100%!

Good to see Bowser reached 83%..or at least, struggling to maintain it. >___<'

Fine, I'll rephrase that. As the fact of the matter is that most people haven't played a 2d fighting game other than MvC2 in the last decade, recognizability is the most important factor for a fighter as opposed to usability. They'll remember Ken, but they won't rememebr that he wasn't that great (but he was, at least in SF2 and SF3 days)

Ken wasen't very good in the SF2 days, Ryu was always better, and SF3 bombed, badly.

And Ken has the rep of being a lame Ryu clone, which probably hurts him as well.

"Ken wasen't very good in the SF2 days, Ryu was always better"

They were almost exactly the same in every SF2 game. Enough so that casual players wouldn't know the difference. We ARE talking about casual gamers more than anything else when fighting games are involved. There is still hardcore support for those games, and if this were run on freakin snk-capcom.com things would be different. Fact of the matter is that Terry Bogard himself proves that the hardcore fanbase for 2d fighters just isn't here.

Only in World Warrior Ryu and ken were complete clones, they changed much more through out the SF2 games, and Ryu got the better end of those changes.

Even by the time Capcom was done with SF2 the only noticable differences were their supers and Ryu's red hadoken thingy. Changed basic attacks and invicibility frames during certain moves don't go noticed by casual players

"Ryu's red hadoken thingy."

I didn't forget the flaming hadoken, just couldn't remember its proper name. And Ken also had some different kicks, yeah, I know. There were differences, not enough that casual players would see that one is inherintly the superior fighter.

You have to stop saying SF2. SSF2, fine... but when you say SF2 everyone thinks of the original in which both are exactly the same. Also, while my memory of SF3 is mostly from third stike, Ken was undoubetdly better. I'd prolly give him the edge in second impact also, though my memory of it is fuzzier.

Gotta say cn, while I like that bar on the side that makes for quick and easy navigation, the brackets don't appeal to me. The font is too large so wiht my piddly 800x600 resolution I have to do a lot of scrolling with the older brackets. Given my resolution, I honestly wouldn't mind if the brackets were extended a tad so that the later matches don't looked crammed in, as long as I can see the whole bracket.

Well, Pyramid Head's picture doesn't have to be that recognizable. You either know him or you don't. There aren't many people you're going to confuse him with.

The biggest problem I had with Pyramid Head is the "WTF?" factor he has to have amongst those that are unfamiliar with Silent Hill 2.

I know this from experience as I was pretty much ignorant of SH2 until 2003. I would hear people talking about Pyramid Head and when I finally saw him I actually laughed at the character design. Then I played the game and found out how damn freaky he could be.

Plus, Bowser was Final Four material no matter what so I'm not surprised by the squashing.

About Pyramid Head, like my sig states I am not a big fan of the Silent Hill series. 2 was actually the only one I kind of liked. Im a Resident Evil guy.

However, I think the story behind Pyramid Head and his design (having to do with this back story) make him one of the most brillant enemies ever.

Something to ponder. Why does Ceej ALWAYS lead off with a Nintendo character? Frankly I'd have prefered Sephiroth to kick things off, and if he had to go with a Nintendo character I don't see why it couldn't have been Ganon. Bowser isn't a real draw, and with the way things are going this reminds me exactly of his round 1 match last year. A relative nobody gets about 1/6 of the vote and the totals float around the 70k area. Seph would have kicked us off with a ~90k match, and Ganon could have at least done better than this.

Because Nintendo characters have enough fans to get them into the top seeds during the nomination period.

Cammy wouldn't beat Bison? You're stonned out of your mind, HM.

What the ****? Hell no. Where in the world did you get the idea that she or any of the others listed, that she would?

Oh, and just to let you know, since you're about clueless, when it comes to fighting games, with the exclussion of Soul Calibur, GameFAQs voters don't appear to be aware that there even were any after 95.

. . .

You have absolutely no idea what the hell you are ****ing talking about if you just said I'm clueless on fighters.

Ken wasen't very good in the SF2 days, Ryu was always better, and SF3 bombed, badly.

Ryu has always been better story-wise, but Ken was never that much worse in gameplay. In fact, I would say that Ken out does Ryu most of the time when it comes to fighting games that they both appear in. And they were pretty even back in the SF2 days. Shoryuken > Hadouken. <.<

Shoryuken > Hadouken. <.<

Except Ryu's Shoryuken was always a one-hit knockdown. Ken's wasn't. If you messed up, you left yourself wide open for an owning.

Same for the Hurricane Kick.
