I don't understand how Ghaleon's big game, SSSC, can sell more than
Vergil's big game, DMC3, and Ghaleon is still unknown compared to
Vergil. DMC3 will almost certainly outsell SSSC in the long run, but
we're not in the long run.
DMC1 SPOILERS!
I'm not all that far in DMC1 yet, as I've only fought Nelo Angelo once, but it seems like he's a cool boss fight and nothing more in that game. Can somebody explain otherwise? I don't care about spoilers, as I'm not playing DMC for the story anyway (another point against Vergil).

No, no nervousness. Vergil is going to run away and hide from Ghaleon.
Too cult, not well known enough, recency factor, <insert asinine
gimmick here>. No need to concern yourself with picking Ghaleon...

I can't believe you guys managed to get me nervous about Vergil/Ghaleon.
Between this and Bison, I'm suddenly hurting to change my bracket. But I'm trying to just block everything out and keep it the way it is.

Can somebody explain otherwise?
Well, Vergil's most prominent role happens to be in DMC3 as opposed to DMC. But I haven't touched DMC3 yet, myself; in fact, I haven't even played RE4 yet. I'm a big Capcom fan and haven't touched two of their biggest releases this year. <.<
But yeah, DMC3 is what you would be looking for in the way of Vergil's multiple appearances and impact on the story more.

I'm not changing my bracket, even if my Ghaleon pick is largely because
of conviction. I don't see anything unreasonable about my assumptions;
Ghaleon beats Luca 60/40 and Vergil loses to Dante 70/30 without SFF.

Yeah, it was a remake of SSS, without the C. Ghaleon was indeed in it, and it was release in December of 2002, not the summer.

the bottom line on Vergil vs Ghaleon is that neither of them is going
to be very well-known. that's when the pics come in to play. i'm a
pretty big Ghaleon fan, and even i have to admit that Vergil looks way
cooler than pale Ghaleon with his big, pointy ears. that's where Vergil
will be able to take this one.

Heck, that's just for one month. If DMC3 kept up those sales numbers,
it might have already matched Ghaleon's biggest appearance, and if not,
it'll be pretty close by the time their match rolls around.
I think recency does matter somewhat if it's not an established character (such as Mario or Link, who are still releasing new games anyway). Of course, Crono smacks me in the face with this, though he did have FF Chronicles, which is how I came to know him, though I did know who Crono was before playing Chrono Trigger, which I think quite a few could say. I doubt many could say they would know Ghaleon without knowing Lunar or knowing somebody who's played it.

I cannot believe that people are debating freaking Vergil vs Ghaleon.
Anyway, I need sleep. If this topic happens to hit 500 by the time I wake up (which isn't impossible), I'd like for either Slowflake, TRE, or Heroic Mario to make the next one (depends who is awake, I guess). Thanks in advance.

The numbers on that site are PSX Japan numbers. The game sold half a million in America according to lunar.net.
On the website posted above, the games are referred to as SSS and EB. Those were Japanese releases. Both gained the name Complete at the end when they came to America.

SoA sold 241,000 across both the GCN and DC combined. I'm now starting to do some questioning. . .

I don't know if that's necessarily true, though Skies does have an established company behind it, while Lunar doesn't.
Plus, I still gotta wonder if Lunar's age will hinder it. It's not like it's got an established company like Square behind it, nor is it an established series. I don't think you could put it in the same group with Chrono Trigger, which still sold well besides its re-release in FF Chronicles.

Would definitely take Vyse in both, and will even add in that I think
Vergil would do better against Vyse than Ghaleon would. This of course
stems from my hypothesis of RPG SFF. In my mind, it would favor the
hero, Vyse, over the villain, Ghaleon, in addition to SoA being more
mainstream than Lunar. Anyone who thinks otherwise need look no further
than SC2k4 where SoA made it and SSSC did not. And SoA had to deal with
all of the recently released games fresh in people's minds to boot.
Long story short, Vyse wins both, but Ghaleon still beats Vergil for reasons listed by me some 50 posts ago.
