It isn't as obvious though, no matter how you slice it, and its not like his matches are going to be blowouts.

I don't know anyone here who would have any sort of trouble choosing a winner if Cloud and Link were not present in a Summer Contest environment. Samus cannot beat Sephiroth. I don't understand why some people in this topic will say that Samus has a shot at Sephiroth, but then have turned around and said that Crono wouldn't beat Samus despite the gap being closer. Honestly, if you remove those two it just becomes blatant obvious that Sephiroth is going to win. It doesn't matter if he beats Samus with 54-55%. It isn't "worth seeing" just to see it. We know how it would play out. Now, the example you brought up about Frog / Master Chief is certainly worth seeing again. Why? Because it can easily go the other way. Samus / Sephiroth stands little to no chance of going into Samus's favor.

well, Crono will slowly work his way up to par with Link and Cloud.....Mario was jsut a mere stepping stone on his path to righteousness

The only way that happens is if Crono either gets another game, a complete remake on a console, or a cameo appearance in something like Kingdom Hearts. It is unfortunate that he must lose so, but that's how these things work.

For all this talk, we haven't the slightest on what CJayC has planned for the Summer Contest this year. We've just flirted with the idea that this could be a way of to remove Link, Cloud, and Sephiroth and it not create an uproar or lack reason behind it. Sephiroth's victory in this contest would more than make fans happy if he wasn't present in a Summer Contest. I don't know where the idea came up that fans would be angry because of that.

Of course the Frog/MC example was better, of course... neither of them have any potential of being barred from competing. The only thing that'll keep either out is lack of nominations.

And really, let's be honest. While we all agree that Link and Cloud are untouchable why are there still some of you that think Seph can lose to anyone other than Cloud or Link? Sure, the gap between Samus and Seph is half the gap between Cloud and Seph, but we've seen Samus lose to Sephiroth, and we saw her match up against the same character that Seph matched up against and lose worse. The sheer force of bracket voters will make for a self-fulfilling prophecy on this one, should Cloud and Link ever be absent while Sephiroth is not. That'd undoubtedly be the highest number of summer contest brackets choosing the same winner even if it's not to the degree that this spring's contest will be.

Actually, Sephiroth gets his chance at winning a contest, fans are happy, and CJayC gets a reason to remove the three most dominant forces in the contest. I'm not sure where the problem is in that. . .

Neither do I, and very little would make me happier than seeing Sephiroth win the summer contest. Of course, if he isn't beating Link and Cloud to win that championship he may as well take this championship. I'd be happy enough with that. I'd rather not have any characters removed than have Cloud and Link out and leave Sephiroth just because it'll make the finals so much more predictable than in any other situation.

Of course you don't see the problem in it. You hate Sephiroth.

That has little barring on his removal after he's already won a contest. If CJayC removes the champions from any previous character contest, then all is well. I was never a fan of this villain contest to begin with, winner or not. I much rather would have seen another game contest without divisions by era over this. The only reason I want him gone is to have a potential four winners to choose from. Now, the number of winners isn't what makes a contest so much as the bracket itself. But you can create a bracket that suits that and has the four potential winners.
