Contest Stats and Discussion - Part 110
From: Sir Bormun | Posted: 4/22/2005 2:28:57 PM | Message Detail
As for Sin, his ONLY redeeming value is from being in one of the 3 best selling FFs. He has no personality, and his whole backstory insists that he's a mindless weapon that only exists by assimilating people.

Crono.

Whenever it EVER occurs to you to consider a character's strength based on his personality, remember Crono.

I don't think Lavos or Sin will be especially strong (at least, they won't be near the top six of Seph/Ganon/Bowser/Liquid/Ocelot/Kefka), but I think that in this contest, they will challenge and perhaps even win a match or two. It doesn't matter that they have no personality. It only matters that they're in a popular game, and they're a pretty big part of the story.

Perhaps sales and company are weak arguments on GameFAQs, but it very much matters what games the character in question are in. The main villain of a game from GTA, or Metroid, or FF, or CT, etc. will not be CATS weak, especially with the matchups they have in this tournament.

There's a huge difference between Crono and those two. If you can't tell what that is I'm afaid I don't have the time to waste explaining it. I gotta get ready to go, after all.

Lavos and Sin should rank comfortably above CATS.

Agreed.

yeah, those other two characters don't look like Goku.

seriously, other than his looks and the game he is from, what other reasons could anyone have for liking of Crono? his in-game stats? his mom is hot? he has a cat? c'mon.

First off, allow me to say that Crono rocks. His lack of dialogue doesn't make him any less likable than someone such as Mario or Link. Crono does, in fact, have a personality that you can see throughout Chrono Trigger and has that adventurous spirit and the caring of others. I'm sure some like the way he looks, and he does look cool, but there are certainly reasons for liking him, just as there are reasons for liking any character.

Now, now HM... don't bother trying to speak reason with people. Some people will always believe the Crono has nothing going for him, no matter what you do to persuade them otherwise. Some people don't realize that actions speak louder than words, or that Crono speaks but they never put the dialogue on screen. Some people hate characters for looking cool, and maybe some people like giant monster bosses with no redeeming values. I bet that those people make up a very small fraction of the people who play those games, though.

Oh, and so you all know, I'd vote Crono over any other CT character, and if you think there's a problem wiht that you can shove off.

I've said this before, but I'll say it again anyway, Ansem is going to do better on Ganon than most think. Perhaps not super suprisingly well, but, for the little grape value it's worth, ansem does not have nearly as much hate as Sora does.

Same here. I place him above any other CT character. Hell, I place him above a vast majority of the characters out there in general.

you guys can love Crono all you want and i won't fault you for that, but i have never felt he was an outstanding character. i am not completely opposed to the whole silent protagonist thing, but nothing Crono ever did ever struck me as noteworthy except for the one scene with the Mammon Machine. everything else he did was with the entire party as a whole. he just seemed like he happened to be in the right place to save the world at the right time. anyone else in his place could have done the same thing.

i will admit that i liked Crono more than Serge, though. Serge did even less than Crono.

Just decided to look before my Statistics exam...but Mega Man has been gettin' more and more bracket-faith year by year (we knew this, but still)...

Well, it's pretty clear people had more faith in Mega Man in '04 than '03, but it's still pretty unclear between '03 and '02. Sure, more people predicted MMan to beat Resetti than Ms. Pac-Man, but MMan was a 2-seed in 2003, as opposed to a 6-seed in 2002. Good point about new bracket predictors having an effect (I've thought about it, too). From 2002 to 2003, the number of predictions more than doubled, but from 2003 to 2004 they actually decreased. So, I think a majority of 2003's predictors predicted again in 2004.

Ghaleon, Mithos, Ramirez, and Luca Blight.
Mm...Mithos > Ghaleon > Ramirez > Luca Blight, maybe. Ghaleon is easily the most hyped non-Square villain ever. Wait, Chichiri thinks Mithos is the weakest? Well, I never played ToS... Okay, then, Ghaleon wins.

Sorry for all that happened, Leonhart...just, um, don't do something like that again.

Most SoA fans I've seen here seem to prefer Vyse, and Ramirez is possibly the lamest villain except maybe Mr. DARKNESS in the contest.

I'm very confident Giygas will do worse than Pyramid Head; even if he doesn't, look as these fun 2k3 stats...

55 - Ness - 15.44%
56 - CATS - 13.52%

...that was when a SSB/M-supported Ness (star of EB, no less) was considered to be an upset special against the 5-seeded Bowser, and wound up being SFF'd hard. Imagine what will happen when the not-endorsed-by-SSB/M Giygas (villain of EB) with almost literally no bracket-support or faith faces the 1-seeded Ganondorf.

Personally, I'm likely over-estimating him a lil' bit, but I figure Pyramid Head would do to Bowser about what Ness did; I don't think he can avoid the tripling, but I feel good in saying he'll surely be stronger than Guybrush.

I'm interested in seeing how Luca Blight ranks in the end, as this year, he gets to measured through weak opponents rather than a Near-Elite. Same with Ansem for measuring CATS. Well, I'm not saying Wesker and Ansem are really weak (for this contest, anyway), but they won't be nearly as strong as Ryu or Magus. As sad as it sounds, I'm expecting them to rank even worse than before.

As for all the characters that I'd consider to have the SLIGHTEST chance of being below CATS:

Pyramid Head
Ramirez
Mithos
Luca Blight
Giygas

Are me and Slowflake the only two people with Kefka winning the Ruin Division?

Personally, I think this contest will be made up of a lot of possible upsets, but other than the first round, there won't be many to speak of. Of course, I could be proved wrong.

And to dredge up Kuja again, personally I see him as being slightly below Kefka, possibly equal.

I see Terra being roughly at the level of undadjusted Vivi (From what I hear FFIX brings in a lot of old-school support, so I don't there was much SFF in the match.) If the two most popular characters in their respective games are equal (for whatever reason; be it BMF or whatever else) than I can see the two villains being equal at the most as well.

1 Kefka Palazzo 31

3 Albedo Piasora 1

That's the BOP picks for that match. The Diablo and Ridley pickers are just a lot louder, that's all.

Those statistics are misleading. Kefka's half of the bracket has very little that can threaten Kefka. Ridley and Diablo have to deal with each other. As a result they are splitting the number of brackets that have Kefka losing.

As a result they are splitting the number of brackets that have Kefka losing.

That doesn't necessarily means those that picked Ridley to win the division would have Diablo over Kefka, nor would that apply to those who predicted Diablo to take it. I expect that more than half of those who had Ridley or Diablo as the division champ would have Kefka as being the 2nd strongest.
