It's suppose to imply a "turnaround" or "revolution" from what they did with the Xbox this generation.
Which makes no sense. If you turn 360 degrees, you're pointing in the exact same direction you started in. Shouldn't it be Xbox 180 or Pi Box?

Maybe the "360" implies that it will run in circles around the next-gen systems by Sony and Nintendo. :P

There are times where you have to look around to get your bearings. A 180 would imply that either they've been going in the wrong direction, or that they're heading in the wrong direction.

Funny that Microsoft should use the "revolution" card when all it's doing is a war of numbers with Sony.
Nintendo's Revolution may have a terrible idea behind it, or it could be genius. No one knows. But if someone's doing a revolution, it definitely won't be Microsoft.

Don't the marketing people at Microsoft do any sort of reaction testing?
It would've been blatantly obvious to just about any gamer that the name "XBox 360" would be treated with laughter. A very small market polling budget would've confirmed this.
Now, the name won't matter too much in sales--but if it even lowers sales by a few thousand units (and it will certainly do that), then they'll be losing money they shouldn't, because they could've figured out that this was a poor name for a much smaller expense than lost sales will be.

lol, i'm not really gonna avoid a system just because it has a stupid name, but yeah, X-Box360 is pretty awful.
in other news, i FINALLY got my hands on a copy of Tales of Symphonia. picked it up new for $19.99 from GameCrazy. i wonder if that means it's gonna be a Player's Choice title soon. i've wanted to get it since the day it came out, but i just today found it cheap enough for me to afford it. yay!! ^_^

I now think that this contest is almost perfectly predictable outside
of Kefka/Diablo/Ridley and Kuja/Sin/Robotnik. And maybe Bowser/Ocelot.
If those are indeed the only matches that the "experts" will struggle with, we should be seeing a fair number of perfect brackets.

I still think the entire four-pack of Dr./Sin/Kuja/MH is up for grabs;
shouldn't be so quick to leave the Hand out. Otherwise, yeah, we do
seem to have many things pegged.

i'd say that the only real tough matches that will decide the contest are:
Ridley vs. Diablo
Kefka vs. Ridley/Diablo
Sin vs Robotnik
Sin/Robotnik vs Kuja (maybe Master Hand)
these matches have a bit of upset potential, but probably won't be:
Revolver Ocelot vs. Dr.Wily
Revolver Ocelot vs. Bowser
Vergil vs. Ghaleon
Luca Bilght vs Wesker
Kefka vs Wesker
Albedo vs. M.Bison
M.Bison vs Ridley/Diablo
Master Hand vs. Kuja
that's a grand total of 12 matches that i have even the slightest amount of doubt towards. the rest of the matches are all no-brainers.

Robotnik is the only one with a serious chance to defeat Kuja, plain
and simple. Say what you want, but Master Hand is fodder. I don't see
what would change that in a villains contest.

well, you can say all you want that Master Hand is fodder, but that is
not a fact. and we won't know that for sure until at least May 16th.
i did decide to go with Kuja, but i still say he won't blow Master Hand out of the water. and me and Harrich are probably be the only two guys in this topic that wouldn't be surprised to see Master Hand pull off the upset. i don't think Master Hand has huge upset potential, but i do think he/it (whatever) does have a small chance at the upset, which is why i put Kuja vs. Master Hand in the second category of matches.

Master Hand isn't going to do anything productive in a contest setting.
It boggles my mind that there are people who think he has any a
moderate chance against Kuja.

Master Hand has very little upset potential, if any. Would you like me
to name the characters within SSBM that would be stronger than it, or
would simply saying at least 85% of them be sufficient, many of which
would be fodder in a contest setting?
Sure, SSBM has a lot of fans, but even among the casual fans I know, he's nothing more than "the hand from Smash Brothers." There is nothing remotely memorable or likeable about him, and the voter has no incentive to vote for him. The fact that people are saying Master Hand has a chance SOLELY by game association (because there is quite simply no other viable explanation for picking him) is stunning.

how many of us said the same thing about Duck Hunt that is being said
about Master Hand? Duck Hunt was supposed to be a joke entry that
hardly anyone seriously liked, but it came extremely close to upsetting
the heavily favored Donkey Kong. i would not be shocked to see Master
Hand pick up a good deal of SSBM's support. a lot of you guys say that
Ness (and possibly to a lesser extent even Samus and Ganondorf) picked
up a lot of support from SSBM's fans. if he can do it, why the heck
can't Master Hand?

Considering who Duck Hunt was facing (and the fact that the game WAS fun and memorable), I seriously considered taking it over DK. I don't know why anybody thought DK was a huge favorite.

Because it's a glove and people need to realize that there's a HUMONGOUS difference between being known and being liked. Everybody knows who Pikachu is, but very few people actually like him. Same with Pac-Man, and I sure wouldn't take Master Hand over him.

Ness is the weakest participating Nintendo character aside from
Pikachu, I believe. Master Hand COULD be stronger than we
think...however, Master Hand also happens to have virtually no fans.
Maybe calling him the bare Nintendo fanbase would be most appropriate.
Anyway, considering Kuja actually has fans, and has Square backing him
up on top of that should assure Kuja the victory, anyway.
Now, as strong as the weakest Nintendo characters are, it's the same situation for Squaresoft. Kefka is actually the weakest Squaresoft character to be in any of the past contests. It would be quite the statement to say that Kuja is a lot weaker than Kefka.
---
"Ah, a party! We haven't had one of those. It could be fun! So...what is a party?"
"Well, you drink punch and eat CAKE! ...I think."

Even adjusting for the Mario/Cloud anomaly in 2002, Fox McCloud falls below Ness (right above Viewtiful Joe).
You'd be crazy to take Master Hand over Fox McCloud, or even Falco, who would be even weaker.

Pikachu is not a fair comparison to Master Hand, because Pikachu is
just plain hated, while MH is not. Pikachu is the symbol of all things
that people dislike about Nintendo - mainly it's kiddie image and how
they can sometimes keep marketing the same thing at you without
improvements solely to make money.
Master Hand and Pac-Man, however, does seem like a fair comparison, and i would actually be tempted to take Master Hand over Pac-Man. by the same token, i'm not convinced that Kuja could beat Kefka head-to-head, which gives me even more reason not to expect Master Hand not to be fodder. i'm not saying the Hand will be an unstoppable powerhouse, but i do not expect him to be the Nintendo fodder along the lines of Mr. Resetti and Captain Olimar that you guys are talking about. and if Kuja also turns out to be a flop nowhere near the level of Vivi (which i don't see him coming close to), then yes, i could see Master Hand sliding past him.

Kuja doesn't have to be anywhere close to the level of Vivi to beat
Master Hand, or even win his four pack. Honestly, it's getting
absolutely ridiculous what people are expecting a glove to do in a
contest setting. Why in the world will people take him seriously, much
less support him?

There's a big difference between Kuja and Ultros. Let's not even go there. I wouldn't expect Protoman to be stronger than Wily, as sad as it makes me.

Eh, I could not even see a decent case being made for Protoman > Dr. Wily. Blues's prominence in the series is very small in comparison to that of Dr. Wily. Hell, even in general.

I'd take Kefka over Kuja, and I am taking Robotnik over Kuja, but, come on. It's a glove. Nintendo fans aren't going to care about a freaking glove.

Let's pretend Link smashed Ganondorf flat purely by GDorf's riding of the Zelda fanbase...
Regular rankings:
Link - 53.62%
Ganondorf - 34.72%
Expected: Link over Ganondorf with 68.62%.
SFF rankings:
Link - 53.62%
Ganondorf - 12.98%
Link won with 87.90%.
53.62-34.72 = 18.9% difference. Now, taking out the Zelda fanbase, Link = 24.93%. GDorf = 6.03%. Zelda fanbase adds 28.69%. =p That means...Zelda is at 1.6%. Thus, Link should receive 96.79% against Zelda if Link vs. Zelda happened. That also means Tingle could beat Kirby. XP
Just messing around...I typed this up so I might as well post it. o_O

Assuming Ridley makes to Kefka (which he won't, mind you), Ridley vs
Kefka is hard as hell to predict. The absolute highest I could see
Ridley placing is around where Luigi is. If Square keeps up its trend
of getting just a little stronger every contest, Kefka could beat
Ridley. I understand that Ridley could be stronger than Luigi, perhaps
just under Knuckles and that there is a lot of room between Kefka and
Knuckles for Ridley to squeeze in, but Kefka may very well go up in
strength again in this contest and take Ridley down with relative ease.
Of course, I think Diablo could smash Kefka to bits, which is the big reason I have him winning his division in the first place. Diablo could beat Kefka. Ridley probably can't. Why pick Ridley to win?

Meh, works both ways. We already discussed on AIM why I'm taking Ridley.

Uh, Ridley is more than capable of beating Kefka. The only reason he saw a "rise" this year was due to SFF from Crono on the previous year. It wasn't because Square mysteriously see's rises in their characters. There was more than a logical explanation behind it and putting something like that as reasoning as to why Kefka would "probably" beat Ridley doesn't make sense to me. Then again, Ridley will be beating Diablo in the first round with ease so we'll get to find out for ourself first hand.

We'll find out what type of a chance Ridley has after we see how badly
Mother Brain gets her face kicked in by Lavos. If she puts up a good
fight, then yes, Ridley may win.
Wouldn't it be funny if Mother Brain actually won? Egads.

I don't see why Mother Brain's performance is going to matter. I'm not even going to vote for Mother Brain the said match.

Meh, I wouldn't say Mother Brain's performance is indicative of how
well Ridley will do. I expect Lavos to beat MB's face in, and I'm still
picking Ridley.

I have Bowser, Ridley, Seth, Ganondorf for final four. I admit my loss. This certainly a hard bracket ahth CJHay has posed for us.

how many of us said the same thing about Duck Hunt that is being said about Master Hand? Duck Hunt was supposed to be a joke entry that hardly anyone seriously liked, but it came extremely close to upsetting the heavily favored Donkey Kong.
Plenty of people thought Duck Hunt could/would win that match, including a number of people from this topic.

Even adjusting for the Mario/Cloud anomaly in 2002, Fox McCloud falls below Ness (right above Viewtiful Joe).
You'd be crazy to take Master Hand over Fox McCloud, or even Falco, who would be even weaker.
I hadn't thought of it like that. I was somewhat concerned about Master Hand before, but I'm a lot less now. That makes very good sense.

I hate not having a search function on this alt yet. =/ Grr...and I have class in just a minute, too. =/
Quick points:
--Don't expect Kuja to be hot **** either though. It'll be news to me just to see him equal Kefka.
--Fox and Falco's had a new game since 2k3 (last time Fox appeared in a contest), and dare I say this, but I'd take Master Hand over Falco regardless. It's not like he's gonna be a force to be reckoned with; you protect his ass in two/three games (don't remember if he was in the original SF or not...think so though), and was a hard-to-get secret character in SSBM that wasn't much of anything special.
---
Yes, the rumors are true: the CIA could only handle my user-name for so long.

I never saw Duck Hunt as a joke entry. I picked it, as I like Duck Hunt
WAY more than I like Donkey Kong. Donkey Kong COUNTRY is another
story.....
I think people are getting too paranoid about their picks. I took one last look at the bracket and made some changes based on common sense... something that cost me the contest during SC2k4. Taking another look, my wrong picks were obvious...

Anyone who knows Mario knows Luigi. Even better, anyone who knows SSBM
knows Luigi. It doesn't raise him from a midcarder though.

I think people are underestimating the popularity of some of the
midcarders... Most of the midcarders are EXTREMELY popular (Knuckles
for example) just not as so in relation to the Clouds and Links of the
world. Just saying that people should take that into consideration
before judging how strong a new character would be.
People made the same mistakes for characters like Tommy Vercetti and Ryu Hayabusa (myself included)....
