the more i think about it, the more Dr. Robotnik really reminds me of Wario. they are both goofy looking villains that everyone knows and recognizes, but noone seems to care about them. in fact, i found a couple more polls to check out, this time regarding Dr. Robotnik:

the polls are a bit old, but they were after a couple of Sonic Adventure games. i believe the only new Sonic game released after these polls was Sonic Heroes. and they seem to follow what the Sonic characters have already performed in contest, other than the notable exception of Knuckles being between Shadow and Tails instead of ahead of Sonic.

according to the first poll (favorite Sonic series character), hardly anyone cares about Robotnik. he barely got more votes than E-102 and Amy Rose. as if that wasn't bad enough, according to the next poll (least favorite Sonic series character), a lot of people not only don't care about Robotnik, but they don't even like him. he came in third (14.31%) in the least liked character poll, barely behind Amy Rose (15.6%) and well behind Big the Cat (23.57%), who is widely regarded as the worthless idiot of the Sonic series. one poll or the other would be a little questionable, but the combination of the two is tough to ignore.

Sin vs. Robotnik really is a question of who will people be less indifferent towards. that really is one patheticly weak 4-pack they are coming out of.

Well, it's just very weird that Sonic did better against Ken a year later (when he supposedly had his big drop) than Samus did in 2002. Either something went very wrong (possibly a result of Ken being a 15 seed, who knows), or Ken did take a sizable drop in 2003, for whatever the reason.

For almost every rule, there is usually an exception. I could buy Ken dropping; he did drop some seeds from 2k2 to 2k3, then missed 2k4...Jill's dropped some seeds from 2k2 to 2k3 to 2k4, and she's been declining in popularity (though we dunno if RE4 will boost Jill-love any or not).

Talking about Jill and RE, I noticed the last time anything RE-related had a win was Jill over Bomberman in 2k2...since then, she's lost to Link, Squall, and Ryu Hayabusa while MGS beat the hell out of RE last spring. Now, Nemesis is gonna lose to Revolver, but Wesker has a great chance to end that wicked streak against Luca.

To tell you the truth, I think something really ****ed up went down in the entire bottom half of the Chaos Division. I refuse to believe that 2004 Sora is on par with 2003 Squall.

I'm aware the Xsts don't show this, but compare Squall/Jill 2003 to Sora/Ryu H 2004. If Jill and Ryu H are equals, then by those two matches being compared, Squall and Sora are equals as well. Something isn't adding up. Either Jill bombed like hell against Ryu H out of nowhere, Ryu H massively overperformed in the very same match, or something odd happened with Samus.

Ulti... I think you vastly underrate Sora's fanbase. KH was considered at the time by many on this site to be the best game on the PS2, born out by it's performance in the Sp2004, where it places fairly high in the extrapolated ratings (thanks in part to starcraft, but remember, many had it going on to face SSBM in the 128 finals). Sora, while still a kid, is actually fairly likeable as a character. He doesn't whine nearly as much as Tidus did, or brood ala Squall. By Summer 2004, pics and video of the older, badass Sora in action were out on the net. It seems likely that by this time his popularity could have increased to around Squall's level.

The fact that Tidus and even Aeris (who didn't do anything worth mentioning in Kingdom Hearts) would get significant boosts suggests that it didn't come from being in Kingdom Hearts, but rather that new fans played their games afterward.

Squall might be a special case, as his role in KH redeemed him in the eyes of some who were already fans of Final Fantasy, which is why he ended up getting the biggest boost. I wouldn't expect Auron's role in KH2 to change any mind's about him since he doesn't look to be doing anything other than being the Auron everyone loved in FFX.

Don't bet on it. For the record, Aeris' role in KH was bigger than you seem to believe. She plays almost as much of a role as Squall in guiding Sora through the early stages of the game, and continues to give advice and advance the story.

Then there is Cloud who went from Mario stumbling block to Champion and jumped 10 places in the extrapolated rankings doing it. Sephiroth, however stayed relatively where he was, just below Link in popularity. If the popularity jumps were because of the original game being played by new users, Sephiroth's jump should have been equal. It wasn't. By 2004, with the KH effect faded and no new pictures to boost popularity as with Sora, Cloud and Sephiroth both slipped slightly, contrary to your theory that RPG's grow more beloved with time.

One more thing: Auron is NOT the only FF character confirmed in KH2. Cloud is back, and Yuna will make an appearance as well.

Not really. In the second half of the post, I don't even mention him. In the first half, I brought up his game as proof of his tournament popularity, and then gave a reasonable alternative to your theory of voodoo magic as the reason for Sora's mysterious apparent increase of popularity. Overall, I would estimate that at most 20% of the post is dedicated to reasons I like Sora, and everyone else should too. Or I'll kill you.
