About Sin... I guess I don't think of him as a characterless whale. I judge him by the fact that... well, he was a good villain. He kicked ass for a thousand years. Yeah, I know it was Yu Yevon pulling the strings, but Sin was the visible one. I mean, really, who says that Emperor Palpatine is their favorite villain? My mom has watched the Star Wars movies three times and she still can't remember his name. It's all about Vader, baby. Besides, Sin ~= Jecht, and Jecht wasn't that bad of a villain. It was something different, as far as Final Fantasy games go. The fact that the rest of his division is lame helps, too.

Of course, with KH2 on the way... in 2k6 there's no saying that Tidus beats Auron.

But the characters didn't get boosts solely from being in Kingdom Hearts. They got boosts because people hearing about them for the first time played their games. Otherwise, how in the world could you possibly explain Tidus getting a KH boost, considering he's in the game for all of 5 minutes?

that's the key word, and it does imply that they did get boosts from being in KH. Sure, Auron stands to gain less than Squall did, but he stands to gain and that's what matters.

To explain Tidus' increase, I think it was more due to an increase in FF fans...or, maybe Kingdom Hearts caused more people to play FFX. In fact, I'd go with that second part. I think KH would cause more people to play FFX than any other game, as they were both released close to each other.

2k3/2k4: Sonic > Ryu > Ken. In 2k3, Sonic beat Ken by over 40,000...then beat Ryu in 2k4 by almost 9,000 (I believe it was suspected Sonic gained a lil' strength back in 2k4, as a note).

Actually, I think Samus is a better way to compare Ryu and Ken. Sure, Samus and Sonic both faced Ryu and Ken...but Samus faced them both in the same YEAR. I think it's more reasonable to say Ken is 7% away from Ryu, rather than 13% away from him.

As for measuring Auron, Scorpion would theoretically be better to measure from than Tails, but I just can't believe Ness would be on par with the Scorpion of 2002 or 2003...so I think Tails is indeed the better choice.

Yes, of course being in Kingdom Hearts helped because it exposed them to a new fanbase that decided to play the games. Otherwise, it'd have never happened.

As for the discussion on characters gaining... due to the nature of RPG characters developing over gameplay they tend to leave a longer lasting impression on a person. This means that even characters from RPGs people played years will still get votes from those players. With other genres I think having recent releases is more important. Give Mario 10 years without a game and I'd be he becomes the next Pac-Man. Leave say Kratos perhaps, or a major character from another recently well recieved RPG for 10 years, and he may become the next sephiroth.

Due to this nature, RPG characters will be stronger the longer their games have been out. While non rpg character will gain as the game ages, but then weaken as it actual grows old. This would explain the trend of change in all three Mario vrs. Crono matches, as well as help explain the gains of many RPG characters.

Meh, but as for Auron's improvement, I think KH2 will do little. KH introduced many gamers to FFX, and I think it's a little late for KH2 to do the same. Plus, it'll be difficult to make Auron's image cooler than it already was. :P

Then Auron won't get boosted without Tidus because they will gain by people playing Final Fantasy X, not just because of a role in KH.

The fact that Tidus and even Aeris (who didn't do anything worth mentioning in Kingdom Hearts) would get significant boosts suggests that it didn't come from being in Kingdom Hearts, but rather that new fans played their games afterward.

Squall might be a special case, as his role in KH redeemed him in the eyes of some who were already fans of Final Fantasy, which is why he ended up getting the biggest boost. I wouldn't expect Auron's role in KH2 to change any mind's about him since he doesn't look to be doing anything other than being the Auron everyone loved in FFX.
