Contest Stats and Discussion - Part 108
From: Heroic Mario | Posted: 4/14/2005 4:50:18 PM | Message Detail
I'd put Wily around the area of Bomberman's value, maybe a smudge higher/lower. And I suspect that Ocelot will be nearer to Yoshi or Vivi - with the ability to be a smudge higher/lower. That puts Ocelot vs. Wily as a 58 - 42 matchup.

Ok, I've heard a bunch of numbers for Wily-Ocelot, but nobody has given me much of an argument (other than "he's about as strong as xyz") of why Wily can't beat Ocelot. Yes, the Mega Man X series is way more recent than the original, but I can't see too many MM fans turning against Wily. I also can't see Sigma beating Wily.

To be honest, I'm not looking to convince people to change their brackets. It may sound somewhat cold, but I do intend to win this thing. But Metroid happens to be a very popular series here at GameFAQs - moreso than any other gaming site you could name - and Ridley does appear as a final villain in the very recent Metroid: Zero Mission. Add to that, that Samus's popularity is sky high and the Metroid games themselves are no doubt strong then you have more than enough necessary to be higher than Ness. There's simply no way at all I'd ever see Ness taking out Ridley.

Two more weeks of arguing relentlessly, using nothing but pure opinions and conjecture, is going to make me go insane. CJayC, you have a very cruel sense of humor.

We have no freakin' idea where Ocelot is. We have even less of a clue where Wily is. Yet some of us are willing to argue, down to the freakin' hundreths place, mind you, where a potential match-up between the two is going to end up? Just amazing.

Saying you believe Ocelot is around Liquid is fair enough, but then saying that Wily is Bomberman, or Kefka, or Luigi, or Link, or whoever, is just ridiculous. We have no idea where he is going to be! We do not even have anything to guage him with, unless you want to take some bearing off of the Protoman debacle, while, if this is the case, I may have to switch to Ultros.

I understand this topic is here for debating, heatedly at times, our views. I love it just as much as everyone else. But come on people... saying x is getting 38.27% on y, when neither character has any benchmarking available, is just ludicrous.

It's nothing more than a projection. If I were to say that I believe Wily will be around Bomberman and lose to Ocelot in a 58 - 42 match, it's just my own little prediction on how it will go. It isn't to say that that will for sure be how things turn out. I don't see the problem with what has been going on. . .

Quick comments:

I got about 4.5 hours into Xenosaga (about what? maybe 30 minutes of which I actually got to play), and never even knew an Albedo existed). Good to know another 3 hours would leave me in the same situation.

I consider myself a fairly well educated gamer, and I had no clue who Ridley was, save for everyone talking about him as the Metroid villain. Not gonna lie... thought he was a guy, not a dragon.

Everyone thinks Nemesis is going to get pasted, yet people somehow think Wesker can take down Kefka? How does this work? Especially after seeing the uninspiring performances by both Jill and Resident Evil in the 2k4 contests.

btw - HM, i admire you solid commitment to Ridley, but i'm still not convinced that Ridley is the biggest villain of the Metroid series. in all honesty, she fights Metroids themselves more often than she fights the Space Pirates, anyways. at this point, Ridley is still just a recurring boss to me. a cool recurring boss, but still not a main villain along the lines of Bowser of Ganondorf or Dr.Wily. maybe i'll change my mind when i finally get to play Metroid Prime.

as far as his contest strength, though, i'm still undecided. i might be willing to take him over Ness, but i do think he would be really close to Viewtiful Joe or Scorpion; which would supposedly put him a little below Kefka. i said it before and i'll say it again. i seriously doubt Albedo, Bison, Ridley, or Wesker will be quite up to Kefka's level. close, maybe even 2K3 Pac-Man close, but not quite. the real question in the Ruin Division is how good will Diablo perform.

Is none of the above an option?

If not, at gunpoint, Lavos, I guess, if only because he actually feels like a villain to me. Sin never really struck me as the thing I was suppose to hate.

in all honesty, she fights Metroids themselves more often than she fights the Space Pirates, anyways.

Well, she has had some missions dedicated to solely eradicating the Metroids - I'm looking at Metroid II and the trip to SR388 the first time. But the Space Pirates are also the one's who are trying to use the Metroids to create warriors that they can use in attempt to overtake planets within hours of landing on them. So while the Metroids are a threat, they become a threat because the Space Pirates are attempting to use them for things they normally wouldn't do.

HM, me and you both have Ridley winning the division...but for as tough of an arguement that you throw out there for Ridley, many of the same things can be said about a metroid. Add to it that a common arguement that's made for Diablo can be used here too (even if I've argued it has minimal effect) and that Ridley/Diablo's a hotly-contested match, Metroid very well could be stronger. Besides, I always feared them more than Ridley and Mother Brain together.

Well, the biggest thing that a Metroid would have going for it is being named after the series itself. I would be willing to debate on a Metroid / Mother Brain matchup, but Ridley would get the vast majority of the Metroid fan votes and just about anyone who knows a thing about the franchise.

I don't know, I keep seeing Goomba over Bowser when I read that. =p

Ya know HM, having only played the first game myself when I think of a Metroid villain I really do think of Mother Brain before anyone else. Now, Captain N may have had an extra hand in that (as Mother Brain was one of the villains used for said show), but the fact of the matter is tat's who I htink of first, without doubt, when thinking of Metroid villains. Oh, and I know what you meant, but shouldn't you have said that the Games were named after the metroids and not the other way around?

*Metroid Fusion Spoilers*
What SA-X did at the end was nothing more than what two long-time enemies would do against each other. The X Parasite saw its main enemy and/or the bigger threat and attacked it for nothing other than instinct.

Wow, that actually makes sense. When I got to that part of the game, I had no idea why the SA-X would help you since I didn't know that thing you were fighting was supposed to be a Metroid. I thought that was the dumbest part of the game until now. (I still think it's kind of dumb because it's basically a direct copy from Super Metroid, but at least it makes sense.)
