this contest starts on my birthday. that means i automatically win, right?

Mario vs. Crono took place on my birthday, and not only did I get the match wrong, I came the first year that Mario and Crono had a boring match. So, no, you don't win because it starts on your birthday.

About Ridley: I think HM is overestimating him, and the rest of you are underestimating him.

Sorry, HM, but there's no way he'll be anywhere near Luigi. On the other hand, all this talk about Ridley being flat-out fodder blows my mind.

The only real reasons I've seen for Diablo being strong are related to StarCraft's performance last spring, and I highly, highly doubt that he'll be getting anywhere near that amount of support. Ridley doesn't have to be particularly strong to beat him, and being the most oft-recurring villain in a popular series suggests to me that he won't be fodder, either. So I've picked Ridley to win the match.

lol, i'm heading to bed, too, but Ridley must have played a HUGE role in Metroid Prime to convince you that he was the main villain of the series, HM, because in the first four games, he was nothing but a boss fight.

Ridley's role in Metroid Prime doesn't house him as the main threat, but he's been going through some reconstructive surgery from the Space Pirates. He was basically turned into a cyborg Dragon and given the title "Meta-Ridley." But where there are Space Pirates involved, Ridley is going to be close by. There's a reason for this, as he is the leader of the Space Pirates. That in itself is huge toward the storyline.

other than the opening sequence in Super Metroid, Ridley never did anything or had anything about his character built up. NOTHING. in fact, in those 4 games, there wasn't even much of a difference between Ridley and Kraid, other than their appearance.

I would like to know exactly what you mean by "not much of a difference" because Kraid and Ridley have totally different styles of fighting and one happens to be vastly superior to other in that ability to fight. But finding the "character" through the game is difficult unless it's Samus we're talking about.

and now that i think about, i really wouldn't pick any Metroid villains as the main villain of the series.

The Space Pirates are the main adversary of both Samus and the Galactic Federation. They are the one's that are causing turmoil throughout the galaxy. And who happens to be behind all of this, leading the way? That's right, Ridley. As far as the storyline is concerned, I find it impossible to say there would be someone better fitted for the title than Ridley. He may not appear as the final boss in every Metroid title - and sometimes the Space Pirates aren't the threat or mission that Samus deals with - but he's got more than enough backing him to be considered such. And when you think of a Metroid hero, you think of Samus; a villain, Ridley.

in Metroid 2, Samus went to SR388 to wipe out the Metroids and all of the bosses were huge Metroids with the final boss being the Queen Metroid, i believe. Ridley was nowhere to be found.

That's one of the cases where Ridley nor the Space Pirates had any business being around. When Samus visited SR388 it was to eliminate any and all Metroids found, and had little to do with the Space Pirates - in turn, would have very little to do with Ridley.

---
No one knows Ridley's origin, yet for some reason everyone in the galaxy fears the name "Ridley."
From: Heroic Mario | Posted: 4/14/2005 3:11:22 PM | Message Detail
in Super Metroid, Ridley busts into a science lab and steals the last captive Metroid. after that, you fight him later as a boss, but that's it. no character development, no dialogue, no motives, no background info, no personality, no anything. again, Mother Brain is the final boss.

The Space Pirates, at that time, were looking toward Metroids so they could analzye and experiment on them to attempt at finding new ways of taking over planetary civilizations. When a single Metroid is capable of mowing through one in hours, the Space Pirates had a very big need to have that Metroid hatchling. Seeing as how he's the leader behind all of the Space Pirates business, his reason for being there was quite simple. But his "background" hasn't been touched upon in any way. Where he came from and his origins are a mystery even until now.

in Metroid Fusion, Ridley is frozen in a chamber, and his lifeforce gets sucked up by an X Paraite and you fight the Parasite-X version of Ridley. but again, nothing is added to his character; nothing at all. the main enemy of Fusion that pursues you is the SA-X, which is an X-Parasite version of Samus. and even that turns around and helps you defeat the Final Boss, which is another Omega Metroid.

Yeah, those are where the remanants of Ridley's remains were kept - in the sub zero temperatures to keep them usable for a later on. The main enemy of the game is the X Parasites, or specifically SA-X. But I greatly disagree with you on the "help defeat the final boss." What SA-X did at the end was nothing more than what two long-time enemies would do against each other. The X Parasite saw its main enemy and/or the bigger threat and attacked it for nothing other than instinct.

so, through that point, there was no clear main villain of the series. just a main villain from game to game. and Ridley was not the main villain in any of them. it's really gonna take some convincing, HM, that Ridley turned everything around in Prime and suddenly became the main villain of the entire series.

If by "main villain in a game" you mean the final boss, then he does actually appear as the final boss in Metroid: Zero Mission. Ridley isn't present in Metroid Prime 2: Echoes, but his role in Metroid Prime is what you've come to expect of him. In two of the games (Metroid II: Return of Samus and Metroid Prime 2: Echoes) he didn't appear in, he had little reason to. But it simply takes looking at how Ridley, leader of the Space Pirates, is the Samus's main enemy or the one she's after for a large majority of the series. The Space Pirates are the main threat in the Metroid universe and Samus is out to stop them so that peace can be returned. In order to do this, she has to eliminate Ridley first and foremost.

Oh, and the logic of Ridley being weak because he's "just a boss fight" is completely stupid. Let's take a look at another Nintendo villain, Ganon:

*major Zelda series spoilers*

_
_

The Legend of Zelda: He's the guy at the end that you fight.

Zelda II: His shadow and name appear on the Game Over screen. Otherwise, he's absent.

A Link to the Past: He's the guy at the end that you fight.

Link's Awakening: Isn't even mentioned.

Ocarina of Time: He's met near the beginning, a third of the way through the game, and he's the guy at the end that you fight. He has maybe 15 lines.

Majora's Mask: Isn't even mentioned.

Oracle of Ages: In a linked game, he's the guy at the end that you fight.

Oracle of Seasons: In a linked game, he's the guy at the end that you fight.

Wind Waker: He's met near the beginning, halfway through the game, and he's the guy at the end that you fight. The game even attempts to give him some character development, though this is all just kinda thrown in during the ending.

The Minish Cap: Isn't even mentioned.

*end spoilers*

As you can see, Ganon is little more than a recurring boss in the series, yet he's the second strongest villain in this contest.

It is a darn shame we have to wait 16 more days for this thing to start... I think a 2 week window for contest entries and such is more than enough time to draw in any site-visiting gamefaqs plans on benefitting from this contest. Three weeks is overkill in every sense of the word.

One match I haven't seen discussed is Dr. Wily/Ocelot. How popular is Ocelot anyways? I haven't played any of the MGS games so I don't really have a feel for his popularity. Now, Mega Man handily did in Snake 57-43. The question is, how does Dr. Wily compare with Mega Man and Ocelot with Solid Snake? I would consider Wily to be not too far behind MM, (don't tell me he's way weaker since he didn't make it into any of the previous contests, we all know that doesn't matter much), but I don't know how Ocelot compares with SS. I'd be willing to bet that Wily has a decent shot of taking down Ocelot. Thoughts?

Ocelot will win, and it won't be all that close either. Mega Man X is the bigger series and has been for a while. I don't expect Wily to be stronger than a low middle tier character.

Well ... this is the first time I've ever posted in these topics. I've read them ... but I've never really been involved.

For what it's worth, I believe Ocelot will hit around 58% in that match. Of course, that's based upon the assumption that he's about the strength of Liquid Snake. So, depending on your view of him, wade around it, accordingly.

I highly doubt he'll reach more than that, though, against Dr. Wily. I simply can't see how Revolver Ocelot would be stronger than Liquid Snake, regardless of his appearance in Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater.
