Contest Stats and Discussion - Part 108

Also, I don't recall seeing anybody mention this, but...Auron outperformed Zero by 2% against Scorpion. Even Ganondorf wouldn't be projected to reach that number, and Magus would only outdo it by .4%.

Well clearly that is because Auron is more of a badass than Zero or Ganondorf, and just minutely less of a badass than Magus.

I thought he got adjusted? Hmmm...then that makes Ness's stock go up pretty big, too; around Tommy Vercetti's level, I assume? Not sure, correct me if I'm wrong there.

Gone to get a hair-cut.

Clearly, but I don't think I've ever heard anyone talk about Auron possibly being that high. We always talk about the almost-Noble-Niners, and Auron's name never comes up.

i brought his name up as an almost Noble-Niner. i also included Tidus and Shadow the Hedgehog in there. maybe that's why noone paid attention to what i said, lol. and, i still say Auron vs. Tidus would be very close.

Well, going by Auron through Scorpion, he would have an ever-so-slight edge over Tidus.

I'd put Guile above Bison as well. And in terms of actual contest matches I'd still bet that two of the three other SFII bosses (Vega and Sagat) would beat Bison though they didn't get the nominations to get in.

Yuck, Guile, ironicly Guile and Bison are the ones getting controllers next month.

I wonder what happened to the Sagat one, it seems to be replaced.

I dun like Guile either, but through funky hair, a solid (though not deep or even large) move set and a bad movie Guile has more contest strength than Bison for sure.

My version of the XS has this:

...
Zero 33.59%
Auron 33.56%
Snake 33.05%
...
Scorpion 23.59%
Ness 23.46%
...
Jak 21.08%

Zero, Auron, and Snake are about 1.5% below Magus and Ganondorf and about 1.5% above Frog/MC/Liquid. Scorpion and Ness are in Yuna/Tails range, and Jak is comparable to Viewtiful Joe and HK-47.

either way it's a damn close match. I'm glad that I was proven right on the possibility of Auron winning over Tidus when most people said it was impossible after 2k3. Now to see what Auron gets from KH2.

I think Bison could take Guile, while Bison gained a lot of hate when he bacame fat, Guile wasen't seen in any games besides the background for four years until Alpha 3 where he was the worse character in that game.

I was about to ask if there's a big difference between adjusting through Tails and Scorpion...hmm, very interesting; if I were to guess, I'd say the Scorpion one is just a lil' bit more accurate; Scorpion had faced Link directly before and the Scorpion < Zero < Sonic < Cloud seems pretty error-free (except for Sonic possibly under-performing a lil'). Meanwhile, we didn't have a clue about Tails until this past year and only have one year to base off of him.

Problem being, Cable, most of the "casual" voters are only going to be able to judge the two on SF2/SSF2 and wont even have played any of the Alpha games.

I think more casual voters like Marvel vs Capcom games than SFII, Strider and Morrigan seem to be proof of this, I douth people have played Darkstalkers or even heard of Strider before MvC.

And Ryu is a lot stronger than SFII was in the contest, I don't think he's that strong from just SFII.

i think Street Fighter 2 is the first fighting game to pop up in most casual voters minds first, but Marvel vs Capcom could also influence a lot of votes. as for Morrigan, well, people don't need to have played Darkstalkers to vote for her - she's hot.

That still doesn't explain Strider. Other than a ho-hum appearance on the Playstation, the only place anyone would know him from is Marvel vs. Capcom.

Plus, the game was created pretty much for the same purpose as the likes of Smash Brothers: To draw casual video game players.

I'll admit, as a casual fighter, that MvsC games appeal more to me. However, I'm much more familiar to SF2 than MvsC. Also, don't be so quick to judge SF2; considering SMRPG faced CT in the second round, there's a chance of SFF in there.

I wouldn't expect too much SFF out of that. Either way, SFII isn't going to be all that strong.

MvC2, sure, but not the first... and Guile was in MvC2. Suck or not, he was there and people who liked him from SF2 would still play with him... unless they wanted to be cheesy Cable players :p

However, the fact that MvC2 didn't make it shows that it can't be much more powerful than SF2 (Though I give it the benefit of the doubt that it could be despite not making it through nominations). SF2 just clearly comes to mind first when you're talkign about fighting games, and htat being siad when they think of Guile their first thoughts will be of him in the SF2 days when he was a solid character.

No one knows Ridley’s origin, yet for some reason everyone in the galaxy fears the name “Ridley.”
From: ChichiriMuyo | Posted: 4/15/2005 2:03:50 PM | Message Detail
Oh, and considering the hype for the DS game on the PSP, I'd be willing to be people have played some Darkstalkers games, more than you expect at least.

Strider, well, he has a lot of old-school appeal. His original game was quite simply pimpin back in the day, after all. SUre, that's not enough to account for all of his strength, but as mentioned MvC2 helps htat a lot. Unfortunately MvC2 has clearly faded out of mind for a lot of people and I wouldn't be surprised if Strider was much weaker if/when he returns. I'd hate to see that, since he's pretty damn cool, but it's all too likely.

Every where Guile's been, so has Bison, the reason people hate Bison is because he's fat and useless in Alpha and Marvel games, if he wasen't he could easily be there with Chun Li and Ken, tons of People used Bison in the SFII days and liked him, if you say people don't care about Alpha/Marvel that would get rid of Bison's hate and make him much stronger.

Darkstalkers got a lot of hype because it was the only PSP game besides Lumines worth buying, there's going to be a Darkstalkers collection for PS2 (maybe Xbox?) but there's no hype for that.

The only hype I really saw for Darkstalkers Chronocle is that people were expecting a new game, it was basically the Dreamcast game with more unlockables which killed a lot of the hype for it.

I still decree that Auron would never be able to beat Tidus in a contest match (for the same reason Magus got pimp-slapped by Crono), but those opposed to this position, we will just have to agree to disagree. I in no way believe that Tidus would defeat Auron by such a monumental percentage, but something along the lines of MegaMan/Zero seems feasible.

i'm not so sure about that one. they are relatively even in contest strength, much closer than Crono and Magus. and then, do you remember this poll:

http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/index.html?poll=841

it's kind of a small vote total, but Auron got over 40% against Tidus and everyone else from FFX COMBINED. this is a bit different than the poll that had Yoshi over Bowser and all of the Mario characters and the poll that had Knuckles over the Sonic characters. 40% against the rest of the cast of characters is significant. the next closest were Rikku and Tidus, both with 14%. i'm not saying Auron would be a lock to win, but this might actually be a case where the main character could suffer from SFF.

A frickin' METROID!?!??

No, I said I'd sooner vote for a Metroid than I would Ridley. Much more interesting. But I suppose it might be. I dunno. I’d lean towards Metroid Prime being easier, though…

Oh, and interesting poll result, cyko.
