Contest Stats and Discussion - Part 105
From: Kaxon | Posted: 4/10/2005 4:42:26 PM | Message Detail
I remember him taking down the nominations and putting the bracket up all within the same day for a previous contest - can't remember which one exactly.

Was it the last one? I hope he spends a little more time on this bracket. =P

I totally agree, which is why I fully support Ulti's proposed idea he told some mod about, where the Game and Character contests would switch year-by-year in the summer.

I think Ceej is a good bracketmaker, all told. The only reason 2k4 didn't work out was Ceej's idiotic predisposition towards making lots and lots of SFF matches.

And I'll be up at 12 AM tonight, just to make sure...

As far as 2 seeds, I say:

Donkey Kong (from a popular series, was one of the few "villains" to make the 2k4 field. the fact that he isn't a true villain is negated by his name on the nomination form)
Wario (cut out from 2k4 because of the cap, from a popular series, is a true villain)
Liquid Snake (best of the MGS lot, and did well in 2k4)
Dr. Wily (It came down to a Mega Man villain or a Metroid Villain for this spot, and Dr. Wily just seems more widely liked by fans of his series than Ridley)

I think Kain will get a fairly high seed, but nothing over 5. While he was one of the few villains to make 2k4, keep in mind that the amount of people nominating Kain is going to stay roughly the same as it was from last year, while people like Wily/Ridley/Bowser/Liquid will get a boost since nominators can't forsake them for a hero. And yes, Kain did likely get left off some lists for Raziel, but not, I'd warrant, enough to get him a high seed.

However, I wouldn't be SHOCKED to see Kain get a 3 seed. The curse n all that.

Well, iirc, when the spring contest was first announced last year, his post said something to the effect that nominations for the summer contest would occur during the final stages of the spring one, and that we would flow one right into the other. As we all know that didn't happen, but at least it was a possibility at some point.

If it's a 32-character contest, there goes many of the thrills we could have

Keep in mind that most people won't enjoy someone the level of Vyse beating down someone the level of Laharl for many first round matches.

Keep in mind Vyse/Laharl still got more votes than most not-a-contest-related polls.

That's because CJayC runs a lot of polls that people don't seem to care about yet he insists on running them over and over again (Got PSP?, something related to MMO, etc.).

Then let's compare Vyse-Laharl totals to the rest of the contest totals.

For whatever reason, this reminded me of the release of Diablo 2's expansion. They said "first half of 2001", and knowing Blizz, it didn't take a rocket scientist to figure out what they meant.

And I missed whatever involved Ngamer and 1-seeds... could anyone enlighten me?

SpC2K5 nominations: Kefka, Ganondorf, Bowser, Ridley, Eggman, Dark Samus, Mario, DK, CATS, Kerrigan
From: HaRRicH | Posted: 4/10/2005 6:44:22 PM | Message Detail
Obviously, Vyse/Laharl gets less votes than Link/Cloud (or most any other match pairing, for that matter). What my point was is that it still brings in more voters than not having a contest match. Thus, having a bigger contest is good for vote traffic because it's different for "Got PSP?" and its seven different variations in two weeks.

There's no doubt about that. I'm just saying we're not going to be missing out on too much if we only have 32 villains because many first round matches would either be of the likes of Vyse-Laharl: no drama because it's decided right from the get-go and most don't care about either.

the highest seeded villains were Sephiroth, Bowser, Kefka, and Ganondorf, so it's possible.

Those were also the only villains of any consequence in the contest, other than Liquid Snake.

I could see Metal Gear Solid getting quite a few villains in, splitting nominations and keeping Liquid from getting a 1 seed. MGS is a gold mine for villainy.

Agreed. The only Metal Gear villain I'd ever consider for nominating would be Psycho Mantis (if only there were five more slots ;_;), but others only swear by Ocelot, and then there's Snake's twit brother.
