Well, Dark Link and Dark Samus in the contest are a scary thought (although it may be no more than a thought). I'm thinking Dark Samus would get in before Dark Link though, since she has storyline implication and is just sooo much cooler. Dark Link's just your average "fight your own clone" battle, although it IS one of OoT's best.

Dark Link is also the final boss of Zelda II, you know. I believe he also appears in the GBA version of A Link to the Past, in that secret dungeon.

The rules for what constitutes a "villain" are confusing. If a character is bad in one game and good in another, they're fair game, but if someone changes alliegances over the course of a single game, they're not allowed in? That doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me.

My thoughts on Dark Link and Dark Samus?

If DL got in, I'd put him (it?) over anyone but Sephiroth. However, since he has zero relevance in the storylines of the games he appears in, I doubt he/it'll get in.

Dark Samus is a definite possibility, especially with all the board support she (it?) appears to be receiving. DS could be a major bracket buster if Ceej lets her/it in.

and anyways... the only person I'm afraid of getting into the contest that could beat Sephiroth, would be Dark Link.

I really don't think Dark Link will be allowed. I think this is part of the reason for having a villains contest: It's something Cloud or Link can't win.

I can't say I support Dark Link and Mario being nominated. I really don't care if they were villains back in the day, now they're both heroes, well, regular Link that is. Dark Link would just be riding off of Link's popularity, and...I dunno that's somehow just degrading to the contest. If it's seph's contest to win, so be it.

OK, most of my posts today have been loosely concealed attempts to get people to nominate Ridley... here's my semi-serious take on the contest, still just a few hours after the announcement:

PROS:

- A great way to get rid of Link and Cloud, yet not try to convolute it. It will, obviously, work the same as a normal summer contest, but most people won't pick up on that.

- It allows a lot of new characters to make their debuts in a contest situation (*cough*RIDLEY*cough*), particularly if it remains as a 64 contender contest and not 32 that I've seen postulated.

- That's the last plug in this post, barring the sig.

- A fair bit of unpredictability. This partly comes from the previous point, and from the fact that a lot of the "instant wins" in the normal SC's are from those that aren't eligible for this contest. We'll still be able to get decent scores, for sure, but I can't see a -1 (off the maximum) being required to win.

- Duke lost to Michigan State.

CONS:

- Sephiroth wins.

- In the case that there's 64 runners, there's the possibility that there's many first round matches that will be blowouts or be matches that people just don't care about. That's a danger in any case, but we're not going to see any 8/9 matches of the caliber of Ganondorf/Alucard.

- No Gordon Freeman. CATS could potentially overtake him in terms of number of losses, which is something which should never be allowed to happen.

- Contest was announced hours after my Illinois-UNC final bracket was destroyed at the last hurdle. That's got to be a bad omen.

you mean, POTENTIAL for a LOT of unpredictability. i say potential, because it depends on how the bracket is set up. it is possible for CJay to botch this bracket into a mostly predictable bracket like last Summer's, but it's not very likely. to me, this unpredictability will definitely be the best part of this contest, seeing how we will only have about 8 characters that we have any previous contest information about.

After all, if there's 64 villains in this tourney, then it'll end right around the time that the nominations for the next contest would begin.
