Simple Explanation of Extrapolated Standings:
A = Strongest Character
B = Character Weaker than A
C = Character Weaker than B
To figure out a character's Xsts Percentage ---> [(CvB)(BvA)]/50 = CvA
To compare how C would do against B ---> [(CvA)/(BvA)]*50 = CvB
To figure out how B would do against A ---> [(CvA)/(CvB)]*50 = BvA

Based on the fact that 47% of the people want to retire the champions? I don't really think that means they are anti-voted significantly... Wouldn't most opponents get around 20 - 25% on them just because of those anti-votes, then?

All it did to Cloud is make him do horribly in the beginning, but he always recovered - aside from the Milkem thing, but that's understandable.

Heh. There are some anti-votes in Cloud's case - anyone can see that he is antivoted at the start of all his matches. But they don't really make a difference...

But to my knowledge, Link has never failed in winning the board vote before, and that is where the antivotes would likely come from...

Well, we've discarded the new voter theory. With so many votes, the new voters will think like the old ones. Link and Cloud keep beating each other by over 5,000 votes tho. (if they'd facved in 2002, Link would have won by even more. Something changing people's minds, and its not just Kingdom Hearts and Zelda 10 trailers.

Also, its pretty obvious that the matches between those 2 get vote stuffed quite a bit. I think the supporters of the character who has won most recently have less motivation to help him out.

Were you on the boards a lot during the championship match? I was, because I was making the updates list for the match and I was occupying myself. People have no clue who won. I saw people thinking that Mario won last year, that Mario won in 2002, that Link never won a thing, that Cloud lost to Sephiroth, that Sephiroth lost to Link in 2003, that Mario owned Cloud in 2002, that Samus was behind by 1000 votes with 10 minutes left in her match with Sonic in 2002 before suddenly cheating to recover the deficit - do you get my point?

Many of them have absolutely no clue what went on and they refuse to even do a bit of research. All they have to do is click on this topic and they can find anything they really need. But for some reason they don't. Doesn't change the fact that there are many completely ignorant people out there regarding the contest.

I think they could be the cause behind maybe 500 - 1,500 votes. I don't know for certain where the rest came from. I thought that the Zelda bundle last holiday season might've had an effect - 2 million GCN's that came with OoT, MM (glitchy though...), Zelda I, and Zelda II? It certainly can't hurt...

Fine, let's see if I can find some new characters that might be good...

1. The Prince - Not only was he in the top rated game of 2k3, which sold millions of copies across the world, it was released on all platforms giving him a very broad spectrum of interest, and he has a sequel coming out in a couple months. If PoP2 stars The Prince, I could see him being pretty decent, around maybe Vercetti level. Even if it doesn't, he wouldn't make a terrible competitor, and I'd pick him over Vyse.

2. Yuri Hyuga - The star of Shadow Hearts and shadow Hearts Covenant, the sequel's success may mean he has a place in this competition. It's an RPG, and if its sales reflect its quality, he could certainly surpass Vyse. If there are any characters from these games who would perform better, feel free to suggest them. I don't know them well at all.

3. Fable Character - Never played Fable, but its sales have been very nice so far, and I could see a character from Fable being stronger than Ryu Hayabusa, and certainly stronger than Sam Fisher. One that I've heard is Jack of all Trades, but again, I've never played the game, and I really have no idea who would do well.

4. Lu Bu - From Dynasty Warriors, I really have no idea what role he plays, or how many of the games he's in. If he's in a lot of them, he could certainly be a decent competitor, especially if he's important. After all, the series does have a lot of sales.

5. Dark Cloud Hero - Could be strong, whoever he is. Of course, the fact that I've never heard of him is a strike against him, but he's been in two pretty decent games, I think. Could be an interesting competitor.

6. Rikku - She'd obviously be quite strong, she's been in two games with very high sales that are very popular at GameFAQs. I have no doubt that she'd be stronger than a 2k3 Yuna, a character that's not especially weak to begin with.

7. Onimusha Star - The fronts of all the boxes look like they have the same character, so I'd guess it's the same person. Onimusha was the most popular PS2 game until GT3 came out, and I don't doubt that its hero would be strong as well, perhaps almost as strong as Dante.

8. Fate Linegood - The hero of Star Ocean 3. What more can I say?

9. Castlevania Hero - Can Alucard really be the only strong character from this amazing series? I doubt it. While I'm not sure who would be the strongest of the rest, CV definitely deserves to have 2 characetrs.

10. Ryu - From Breath of Fire. I believe that he would be very strong, perhaps at a level around Knuckles. He's the hero of five games, and he's ridiculously cool. I mean, turning into a dragon? What's cooler than that? In any case, he's the best suggestion I have for a new character, that hasn't been suggested recently. I'm certain that he would've been in the top 32, if he'd been in in 2004.

Anti votes are as much up in the air as the existace of teh noblenine by next year.

Speaking of which, have you guys decided what we're going to do for that? We could stick with the noble nine assuming that MM simplay underperformed in his match and royally screwed that entire division (not to mention snake will have his third game by the next contest). Or we could boot snake and make it eight, or, tentatively, make it super seven by booting MM and Snake because they bring up the rear of the Noble Nine (I honestly believe that there was no SFF in MM vs Link, it just doesn't make any sense to me).

Knuckles actually went up, very slightly. Kefka, though, had a massive increase. He's above Ryu and Jill in the rankings. Or at least Slowflake's SFF-adjusted rankings. A match between Kefka and Yuna would be expected to be close, excepting FFX-2. Which would make it not close at all.

Still, she was pretty weak and I don't suppose that speaks well for Rikku either. I don't see how FFX-2 would significantly help either one of them. It could, but I don't see it being a big effect...

Rikku is much cooler than Yuna. Although I really hate FFX-2, I think Rikku is the only good thing going for it. I know I dislike Yuna mostly because she never seems to do what she wants. It also doesn't help that she has a terrible voice actress. That aside though, what is all this talk about anti-championship votes?

I believe that the only reason Link lost in 2003, was because Ceej used Wind Waker pictures. The pictures make a bigger difference than a lot of people think. That's just my opinion though, because I deal with a lot of casual gamers. I've shown them the polls before and most of them simply vote for who has the cooler picture, because they think that's what the poll is all about. They don't look at it as voting for a character that spans over multiple games and generations, they look at it as voting for how that person looks in the picture.

That's just my opinion though.

Antivotes are nonexistant, or minimal at best. If you go by my stats, Cloud increased a bit, and if you go by CN's, he was constant. They would not affect the outcome of a Clink match.

And let's not start the retirement BS again. 9/10 people in this topic are against it for very intelligent reasons.

And go Sigma over Sora! Time to do a little modifying to see if I can make my bracket more painful, as well as shake up the fodder a bit...

1. The Prince

He's a big name among snubs, with both old and new school games to draw on. He's like Ryu Hayabusa in a sense, except perhaps more recognizable by your average person. I've used "The Prince" in quite a few lists, and most people instantly assume that it's the PoP Prince. He'd be a good choice, especially with PoP 2 coming out.

2. Yuri Hyuga

Among the Shadow Hearts characters, Yuri's likely the best known and the most likely to suceed. Still, I'd love to see the real Roger Bacon as a 16 seed... he'd be a great joke character. I'm concerned about the SH series' interest levels here, even if it is an RPG, but I can see Yuri swinging a lowish seed like Luca.

6. Rikku

I'd like to explore non-Square/Nintendo choices first. There will always be concerns about how they dominate the brackets. That said, Rikku would be a good choice, though I don't like the large amount of FF X entries.

7. Onimusha Star

Samanosuke? His name came up prior to 2K4. He lost his first-round snubs match with Vincent, but he did well and a decent number of people seemed to know him. I'm concerned that by next year, he won't be as well-known, but I wouldn't object to seeing him in.

8. Fate Linegood

I don't see how he wouldn't be in, barring another Square limit.

9. Castlevania Hero

Since we can't use Dracula or Death, the choices are rather limited. Simon was in and might deserve another shot, Sonya isn't well known, Trevor's likely unheard of, Maxim/Nathan/Soma were one-shots... If you were going to take anyone else, I'd look at Richter or Leon.

10. Ryu

Ryu's one of the larger snubs, I'd agree. I'd absolutely love to see him in (he was a character I've been saving up for a surprise pick closer to nomination time). I can see him bombing, but just as easily I could see him making the Sweet Sixteen.

I was trying to think of a killer division, and I started to wonder why nobody wanted Sonic/Mega Man with the way the XS turned out this year, and I thought of this.

1) Mega Man
2) Mario
3) Sonic
6) Magus.

Put a good 4/5, 7/10, and 8/9 and that division will be the killer of most brackets next year.

Okay, what I am trying to do has nothing to do with seeding. My goal is to get the 64 most popular characters in 2005 in a contest.

The characters I gave returning bids are Link, Cloud, Sephiroth, Samus, Crono, Mega Man, Mario, Sonic, Magus, Gannondorf, Zero, Solid Snake, Frog, Master Cheif, Liquid Snake, Ryu, Squall, Bowser, Alucard, Auron, Sora, Kirby, Dante, Tidus, Vivi, Yoshi, Shadow, Knuckles. The Top 28 characters. Im not saying more returners cant be added, but at least not automatically.

The reason I stop with Knuckles is after him there is Tommy Vercetti and then a large gap. I plan on replacing Tommy with CJ anyway and that gap seemed like the perfect place to stop.

Of the characters who did well enough in 2002 and 2003 without returning in 2004 are Aeris, Zelda, Strider, and Morrigan. Now we have 32 returners.

As for new characters, we must first put in the obvious popular ones. Vincent, Kerrigan, Leon, CJ. We have 36. That means we need 28 more characters.

I already have a basic list, but I am really open to suggestions on who we should add. I think our first goal before seeding or making any brackets is to get the 64 best characters into a contest.

Heh, sorry Shadowdude. However, that bracket does raise some problems: Who gets the last 1 seed? Who gets the last 2 seed. Crono/Snake might be better next year, but its looking pretty crappy now. However, with a 2/3 Snake/Zero, it could be good.

If by SFF you mean Squall/Auron and Sora/Frog/Cloud, then I'd say that unpredictability > non-SFF. Do you seriously know who would win those 4/5 matches?

Also **** seeds. Gordon needs to get a high seed to make his loss greater.

(8) Terra Branford

(8) Donkey Kong 25.34
(9) Leon Kennedy

(4) Kirby 28.54
(13) Tidus 27.19
(5) Sora 29.62
(12) Sigma

I have Sora winning the entire 4-Pack

(7) Viewtiful Joe 21.56
(10) Fox McCloud 18.99

I think Fox would win

(6) Alucard 29.75
(11) Vincent Valentine
(3) Vivi Ornitier 29.10
(14) Zelda 30.29

I have it Zelda vs Vincent in two very close matches. I dont think I could pick a winner between these two, but if I had to I go with Zelda.

(9) Raiden 12.29

I think Zidane would take him

(4) Liquid Snake 32.10
(13) Ryu (BoF)
(5) Squall Leonhart 31.72

Well, well looks like you were talking about Mewtwo while I was gone. So let's look at Pikachu last year. First we have Pikachu in SFF match against Fox, but Fox didn't have any against Link. This is where Mario vs. Cloud come in. With Tails we see that Cloud would've gotten 52% against Mario. So this year Pikachu woul've been ranked 50th. Whether or not you believe that Mewtwo is stronger then Pikachu he could keep over a third of the characters from last contest from breaking 60%.

On MWIS's suggestion, and the previously unknown fact (to me) that Ocelot is in MGS3, consider Raiden replaced by Ocelot. That means we now have:

(8) Zidane
(9) Revolver Ocelot

Unless too many people think that it's a bad idea.

Post MGS3, Ocelot would do better than Raiden, yeah.

But I could see the point of, say, UltimaterializerX, if he were to say that pre-MGS3 Raiden would be more deserving than Ocelot.

Raiden got unfairly SMACKED DOWN by SFF in 2K3. If SP2K4 is any indication, Raiden could be a Liquid of his own against any other opponent. It's just that Snake has his number.

Excellent changes, RPGuy, your bracket is even more awesomer than before. The only problem I have with it is that Samus still doesn't get to beat another noble nine member! I doubt that MP2 will have a huge impact on her popularity, unfortunately. It targets exactly the same crowd as MP did. Nobody's going to buy a GCN for it, just like nobody bought an N64 for Perfect Dark. I have no doubt that it will sell well, but unless its multiplayer is amazing it won't gain Samus a huge amount of popularity.

But, yeah. I'd love to see her destroy Mega Man and Crono, or even Snake, but unfortunately, those matches don't happen. I can see why not, and I have no solution for you, but it's still sad.

Yes, yes, First Hunt is being packaged with it and Hunters itself is likely to be a launch game. But how much impact do portables really have, especially considering that Samus has already had Zero Mission and Fusion on the GBA? As much as Nintendo would like to think that the DS is not the GBA's successor, the masses are still going to treat it that way. And with the Stylus-based controls, Hunters just might end up being another Luigi's Mansion.

As for Sora, killling Snake or Sonic??? Lets not get ahead of ourselves. I will safely put him on Snake's level next year, no one kills these two outside of the top 5.
From: Leonhart4 | Posted: 10/6/2004 9:25:34 PM | Message Detail
Yet he would undperform that massively? Your looking at 10% underperformance by Tidus. Completely unbelievable if you ask me. He would also rank ahead of Solid Snake, who I still cannot see dropping that much inbetween contests given his recent gaming record.

This coming from the person who argued that it was so difficult for you to believe that Tidus dropped because it meant that he and Shadow fell in proportion to one another? This coming from the person who argued that Zero was the anomaly because Tidus is one of the most consistent performers in this contest?

I say Tidus underperformed against Sonic in 2002. That's why he doesn't suffer from WDF.

Also, Magus and Ganondorf rank ahead of Solid Snake now. If Tidus never left that level, it's common sense that he would as well.

And un-adjust Mega Man if you don't think Tidus could underperform so much.

We know Cloud isn't going anywhere. There's way too many FFVII fans for that. It's doubtful Squall is going to be disappearing anytime soon, too. He is at least memorable, even if many don't find him likeable. But Tidus? I get the feeling once the next "real" PS2 FF is released, he'll be closer to Zidane than Cloud/Squall. I wouldn't be overly surprised if he dropped a few percent this year, not what the XS have him it, of course, but not enough to challenge Ganondorf anymore. And if FFXII is a hit, he'll spiral downwards until he's mostly forgotten. Auron might have staying power, but not Tidus.

This coming from the person who argued that it was so difficult for you to believe that Tidus dropped because it meant that he and Shadow fell in proportion to one another?

I don't believe he should've fell given that Mega Man has completely whomped him. At that time it looked more like an excuse than anything, to attempt at explaining Mega Man's dominance.

This coming from the person who argued that Zero was the anomaly because Tidus is one of the most consistent performers in this contest?

Of course I argued on Zero being the anomaly. The fact it was a SFF match was more than enough for me to disregard it and look at a more solid performance against Tidus. Now that Mega Man has been said to not have changed from 2003, Tidus would have to completely underperform. I don't believe that for a second.

I say Tidus underperformed against Sonic in 2002. That's why he doesn't suffer from WDF.

And I've been against you on that since you decided to bring it up.

Also, Magus and Ganondorf rank ahead of Solid Snake now. If Tidus never left that level, it's common sense that he would as well.

It's even surprising to me to see Solid Snake ranked as low as he is, but if Tidus were to go back to his level why would Solid Snake? He certainly didn't perform at a 33% level.

This is what I get from not watching FFXII trailers. Regardless, I don't think Tidus is going to remain at such a high level. I'll agree with you that he underperformed on Mega Man, but not to the extent that it draws him back up to Gdorf's level. If I had to place him, I'd say right around Squall or Auron's levels, about 4% short of where he was last year and roughly half the distance of his fall.

Tidus is not a beloved character. He gets votes for being the main character of Final Fantasy X, which will only help him to a certain extent. Put him up against a beloved icon, and he's got no shot.

Why not put in 4 MGS characters? Solid, Liquid, Ocelot, and Raiden could all do well in their own right. If Square can have 11 characters, I see nothing wrong with Konami having 4.

Well the battle system is a bit odd - you can press a button to go into battle mode and sphere opens that shows your range. You can choose to attack different body parts, and you can learn combos later on, parrying, etc.

It's weird at first, but once you learn the better attacks and you can have more weapons and combos and spells, it is a lot of fun.

I think it is more dungeon crawling to be honest. But Ashley Riot (main character) kicks ass.

I wouldn't consider it a standard RPG, though going by storyline alone, you could call it one.

He's not that bad, actually. But when I let someone at school look at an EGM with him in it, the first reaction is "... Is he gay?"

And I hate to say it, but the average teenager is exceedingly homophobic, and assume that someone is homosexual even if they aren't just based on the way they look.

I don't generally like GameSpot's reviews, but this excerpt is very true:

"Let's just get it out of the way - Vagrant Story is a ground-breaking game. Allow me to say that when I decided to start that little argument again I knew I wasn't on ground that was secure. I don't believe Tidus dropped like a rock, but at the same time I don't believe he vastly underperformed like you have been claiming he did. I do see Tidus dropping, but not by anything as significant as the X-sts have him at right now. Now, I believe you brought up the point that Mario/Tidus was projected to go 55-45, but you could see Tidus not getting that? Well, I could certainly agree on him getting the 42-43% you said he would against Mario. Why? That kind of underperformance fits perfectly into what you're describing. When you start trying to claim he underperformed by 10% and it just gets crazy.

Also, on the subject of Mega Man staying the same and not increasing. Up until that match against Link, Mega Man was projected to just get above 40% on him, if I remember correctly. I'm not sure if that was on a 2003 or 2004 Link, but it is irrelevant to my point. Up until that match happened there had been projections that gathered Mega Man increasing by 2% from 2003. I fully believe that. Do the X-sts say it happened? No. At the same time, you can't simply adjust it and throw Link/Mega Man out there like it never happened. That's messing with stats and basically making them pointless just so they "look" right.

Do I think Crono could beat Mega Man? No. Do I believe Samus could beat Mega Man? Yes, but certainly in a heated match. Where does this stem from? The fact I think Mega Man did increase from the prior year. Every match--minus Mega Man/Zero--pointed to Mega Man getting some sort of boost from the previous year. Whatever the factor was in Link/Mega Man it was there.

In conclusion, I'm with you in agreeing that Tidus did not drop like a rock. What reason does he have to do that much? I do disagree with you on your explanation as to why Tidus did that bad. Underperforming by 10%? Come on, that's just insane. I think Mega Man increased and Tidus fell a little bit. The stats won't justify it, but that's my view point on this matter.

Callo >>> Ashe

VS = best game of all time. Seriously, everything about this game rocks. It has the best graphics on the PS1 - they're sort of in the style of Metal Gear Solid. It has an INCREDIBLE translation. I seriously doubt that the original Japanese was anywhere near as good as the English. It has very atmospheric music, which is amazing, especially the first time through. It has the best replay value in ANY RPG, surpassing even Chrono Trigger. It's plot is amazing, and you'll love/hate every single one of the characters. They're just that good.

But yeah, VS is awesome, I'd highly recommend it. If you don't enjoy it at first, put it down for a month and start again. Everyone loves Vagrant Story eventually. Plus, it's not super-long, so you can play it quicker than most of those other 19 RPGs. What are they, btw?

On a side note, I'm glad that the Tactics team is in charge of Final Fantasy XII. However, I was hoping that we'd get another lead character along the lines of Ramza Beoulve. Someone who was truly noble and valiant, with no ulterior motives or anything of the sort. He just wants to do what's right. He's a brilliant character, in my eyes.

I think they tried to do something similar to that with Zidane in FFIX, but they couldn't pull it off as effectively.

Someone who was truly noble and valiant, with no ulterior motives or anything of the sort. He just wants to do what's right. He's a brilliant character, in my eyes.

Well we don't know that much about Vaan yet. Actually, he sounded a bit like Vyse when I first found out about him, as far as his aspirations for being captain of his own airship went.

Not to mention, Vaan wants to be an Air Pirate, too. It got me thinking that Square was ripping off Skies of Arcadia. A Vyse-like character would be cool, too. I can't say anything positive or negative about Vaan's character right now, but I hate his design.

Ulti's Snake/Tanner write-up inspired me to do some number-crunching on everyone's new favorite loser. Here's what I came up with:

2004 Link would score 96.48%.

Tails could score 91.89% on Tanner.

Everyone in the adjusted X-Sts all the way down to Protoman would score over 90%.

Gordon Freeman would get 86.87%.

UNADJUSTED Ganondorf would get 85.45% on ADJUSTED Tanner. When adjusted, this score goes up to 94.56%.

Mr. Driller (last in 2002) would get 67.39%. Ms. Pac-Man (previous biggest loser in Summer Contests) would get 71.48%. Mr. Resetti (last in 2003) would get 77.88%. Guybrush (second to last in 2004) would get 82.08%.

Had it been Luigi facing Tanner instead, Megaman's blowout record would've been broken regardless. KOS-MOS would've barely fallen short.

Lufia and the Fortress of Doom
Phantasy Star II
Star Ocean II
Chrono Cross (going for all endings/characters)
Tales of Eternia (/Destiny II)
Fire Emblem (Eliwood's Hard Campaign)
Final Fantasy IX (replay)
Breath of Fire
Final Fantasy IV (replay)
Wild ARMs II
Earthbound Zero
Shining in the Darkness
Bahamut Lagoon
Tales of Symphonia
Fire Emblem Gaiden (2?)
Front Mission
Star Wars: KOTOR
Soul Blazer
Suikoden

If by Breath of Fire, you mean the BoF series, Dragon Quarter is apparently similar to Vagrant Story, in some way. Just something I'd heard, although it may not be true.

And RPGuy...post your bracket in a topic! I'd love to see how the rest of the board would react to it, and none of the other brackets being posted are super-impressive. It'd be good to see a very good one out there, so that everyone could know what an awesome bracket truly looks like.

I don't think Sigma would beat Sora, not do I think Wily would beat Luigi. People take this being in good proportion to the hero thing like it's the law.

I think the Sigma thing is crap, too...I also think Dr. Wily would be stronger than Sigma, and Luigi is weaker than Sora. Dr. Wily would have SOME strength entering the contest if he gets in, and I would consider him around Luigi's level, perhaps even a lil' higher. Nothing insane, really.

We need to get BoF2 Ryu in the contest. That still remains one of my five favorite games ever. And after playing through FFX, I felt like Capcom should have sued Square for plagurism... Evan... Yevon... bull. What dirty birds. And I still haven't finished Lufia 2. I got caught up in the endless dungeon, and never got back into the game. Dekar really didn't do it for me; I was, however, completely enthralled with the girl. The fact that I cannot remember her name probably doesn't show it that well, but the scene in the middle of the game where she <spoiler>, I was completely speechless.

"Dekar really didn't do it for me;"

You just said you had spent more tim ein the endless dungeon than progressing in the story, so you're missing a part of what makes Dekar kick so much ass. ANd there were two girls, Selan and Tia. Tia is the one that joins you in the very beginning, Selan joins later.

We need to get BoF2 Ryu in the contest.

All the Ryus would probably be caught under one heading (even if they've been proven to not be the same character) by Ceej, thanks to the Mega Rule.

That still remains one of my five favorite games ever.

...
Tell me you're joking. PLEASE tell me you're joking. Breath of Fire II is the worst RPG I've ever played. The translation is worse than FFT's, the characters are bland, and half the game is a single fetch quest gone horribly wrong!

You just said you had spent more tim ein the endless dungeon than progressing in the story, so you're missing a part of what makes Dekar kick so much ass.

You mean the erotic subtext with his sword?

In all seriousness, it needs to be either the top five or top eight that get a magic label this year; there's a big enough gap between Crono/Mario or Mega Man/Ryu to warrant having cut-off points between either of them.

Got back from my Tales of Eternia binge...rarely have I had a final fight that I didn't want to fight, because I sympathize with the character I'm fighting, have such a...satisfying ending. I'd say more, but I don't want to spoil it. It's not too often in an RPG that a final battle lets you do things you can do in other genre's, but Tales is just amazing that way.

And how's this for attacks:
Dark Force - "There's no use."
Holy Lance - "Feel the wrath of God."
Thunder Blade - "Fools."
Nihilistic Night - "Hahahahaha!"
Summon Pluto - "Perish."
Eternal Finality
-The Darkness of the Outer Limits-

Anyway, just want to encourage you all to play Tales of Eternia. Tis a masterpiece.

As for contest related things, I'll post a topic for my bracket eventually, I'll play Lufia 2 and form an opinion of Dekar as soon as I beat the original Lufia, we shouldn't form an elite group at all, and I think that's it.

My personal preference would be to cut it off at Crono. There seems to be a good difference between Crono and Mega Man. There seems to be a pretty clear distinction between Crono - Mega Man. Unless MM actually did suffer some odd pseudo-SFF against Link.

This is the first time I really looked at these. Link would get 53.62% on himself in 2003? Wow. O.o

I'm not kidding, BoF II only falls behind Final Fantasy IX and Secret of Mana, but just ahead of Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy X. The characters were not bland! I will give you Rand made me want to hang myself with something, anything long and tangible. But the storyline with Ryu and multiple endings still make this game freakin' awesome for replaying. Yes, the translations weren't exactly Whitman, but means little to me, because I know what is meant to be said, regardless of what is lost in translation.

And yes, Chi, you are right that I have not finished the game, and thus cannot pass judgement on Dekar. However, from what I had seen he just didn't do it for me. Yeah, it was one of those two girls. When I get back to the game in a bit I will just check my party to know which one I am talking about.

Seems that Halo 2 hasn't actually had 1 million pre-orders - Microsoft called those figures premature and speculative. "Only" 750,000 copies have been preordered thus far.

Not much of a difference, but might as well point that out so people don't continue referencing the "1 million preorders" figure. ^_^

But cutting out Mario would make it seem like we are convinced he can't beat MM which ISNT the case. At least not to me.

Cutting out Mario would mean that we are convinced he won't beat Crono, Samus, Sephiroth, Cloud, or Link...it means nothing about winning or losing when facing Mega Man. However, considering he's beat Crono twice and Cloud once (I could believe he'd get enough rSFF to beat Samus, too), I don't think he shouhd be cut out. If you don't cut him out, Sonic and Mega Man are close enough behind him to make it into that group, too. Then, from there, there's a decent gap between them and the rest; Mega Man and Sonic have both beaten Zero, and Sonic beat Ryu as well, so that should confirm their status if the extrapolated didn't.

He's beaten Crono twice with controversy too. If you want to exclude those wins, he's never beaten a Noble Nine member...or any of the members who's been added with controvery either, like Magus/Zero/Ryu. At least Sonic, Mega Man, and Solid Snake have beaten one of them, which confirms their status there more than Mario has if you don't want to count Mario's best matches.

Ha, I just read Heroic Mario's Sonic Adventure 2:Battle review. 9/10? Nothing really bad to say? Shocking! Except for the fact that he doesn't like rap ;_;. I admit that the lyrics aren't the greatest, but even if you DON'T like rap, you gotta admit that the music from some of the Knuckles stages is kinda catchy (Pumpkin Hill, Wild Canyon). I think the soundtrack of SA2:B is one of the best I've ever heard if you keep an open mind about the different genres of music being used.

Anyways, back on subject. I think this year confirmed that there is no elite section of characters. The characters pretty much fall in line. There may be little gaps here and there, but nothing warranting breaking off the characters from the rest of a group. As of now, it's nothing more than a personal acknowledgement thing. Even though there is a gap between Sephiroth and Samus, Samus is a potential MP2 and MPH away from closing the gap. There's nothing to say that other characters like Zero and Magus won't have the same thing going for them in the near future....

Fair enough, though there was still controversy. So, Mario beat Crono twice...once with controversy because Crono was caught cheating, and another because Mario wasn't caught cheating. Crono then beats Mario with a bigger gap between them than the two gaps Mario by Crono by combined. Considering their history and records (Crono's the only one who had a dominating victory, but Mario's had Crono's number twice), I can't see why Crono should be the cut-off point and leave Mario out.

Perhaps it's just me, but I find it weird for a former 2k2 Runner-Up to not be considered among the elite, especially if you're goin' to count Crono as one.

Cloud beating Link in 2002? O_o

I don't really think so. He was significantly overperforming in every one of his matches in 2003 (about 5 - 7% overperformance against CATS?), and he still only beat Link with 51.61%. I think he was underrated by the X-Sts in 2002, and maybe could hit 45 - 46%, but not beat Link.

The bio is pretty good, the pic is decent (but It's hard to find great pics of alucard) and the music...

Well, it sounds just fine, but it's far from my favorite piece in the game.

A favorite of mine...

http://www.vgmusic.com/music/console/sega/saturn/Saturn_Bloody_Tears.mid

Though of course, it doesn't give the "feel" I'd look for in terms of Alucard, I guess. Plus, as much as I love Bloody Tears, that midi doesn't do that version of the song any justice whatsoever.

http://www.vgmusic.com/music/console/sony/ps1/sotnchap.mid

That has a pretty good feel to it, I must say. And this is always good...

http://www.vgmusic.com/music/console/sony/ps1/sotnpain.mid

In fact, that's one of my favorites in the game, after Bloody Tears (damn the PSX version for not having it).

Yeah, I guess considering all things, you got one of the best pieces. You know, what with SOTN's Bloody Tears not translating well into midi and Lost Painting potentially being too "boring".

Remember the suggestion that Alucard might've underperformed against Sephiroth in 2003? If he did so against Sephiroth, perhaps he underperformed against CLOUD in 2002? Maybe Cloud doesn't HAVE to be that strong to take care of the Alucard/Tails anomaly?

If you assume Ganon and Alucard are the same in 2004 as in 2003, one would assume that Alucard, at an extrapolated value of 29.75%, shoulda received 29.92% on Sephiroth, rather than 27.72%. Alucard thus had 92.65% of his normal strength against Sephiroth. If you applied that to his match with Cloud, Alucard should've received 32.77% on Cloud in 2002, rather than 30.36% (I hope I didn't screw up the math...). Working from there, Cloud would be expected to receive 38-39% on Link, AND Alucard and Tails would now be taken care of. :P

Pretty nice. A few things though. You should have used "." not "," for the decimal point. o.0; Also, you should calculate what they would be expected to get on Link in the years they weren't in based on latest performance.

Also, you should calculate what they would be expected to get on Link in the years they weren't in based on latest performance.

That's my only suggestion as well. These are the only stats that I'm glad to see are adjusted; kudos. However, seeing Claire Redfield rank over Kefka, Luigi, Donkey Kong, Jill Valentine, and even Alucard has got to be wrong on multiple levels. Same for Morrigan over everybody I just listed besides Alucard.

Also, looking at the characters who have made it every year, from the bottom-up...

Ryo Hazuki
CATS
Gordon Freeman
Lara Croft
Pac-Man
Crash Bandicoot
Max Payne
Duke Nukem
Scorpion
Jill Valentine
Bomberman
Tails
Donkey Kong
Knuckles
Tidus
Dante
Kirby
Alucard
Squall
Ryu
Solid Snake
Sonic
Mario
Mega Man
Crono
Samus
Sephiroth
Cloud
Link

...twenty-nine characters have made it in all three years, though I think the order they're in is kind of screwy; we've got enough info to fool with this and see that not all of this is right (though I know the extrapolated is certainly not the final word in rankings). I'm gonna try to sort them out later on tonight.

All I know is Gordon's theme song still better be 3DD's Loser. I laughed for two good minutes when I went to the website and heard that playing for the match.

And someone earlier addressed how Cloud's 52-53% on Mario pre-PlanetGCN would not have taken out Link.

...unless Mario got SFFed pretty good.

*Runs away*

And if MMX and you are entertaining the idea of guest-writeruppers (which Leonhart brought up), I would probably give my left kidney to get write up Vercetti's. Just thought I would throw that out there.

Yeah, I thought it was really weird seeing how high Claire Redfield was. She actually ranked 13th in 2002 though, right behind Aeris and ahead of Jill Valentine. She was the strongest character not to return in 2003, yet I've never heard any mention of her being considered a big snub. I doubt she'd still be that strong, considering Jill has fallen quite a ways since 2002.

You should have used "." not "," for the decimal point.

Living in Montreal + studying in french -> using Excel for school work which means using francophone mathematical notation conventions ("," instead of ".", and other things). Usually I think about changing it when I post something on the boards but this time I forgot. Sue me =P

o.0; Also, you should calculate what they would be expected to get on Link in the years they weren't in based on latest performance.
All values are in standard SC2k2/SC2k3 Link strength, which is already giving what they would get on Link in 2k2 and 2k3, and is better IMO for comparison and sorting purposes.

And as far as some characters looking out of place, I think that the following should be adjusted: Sephiroth(#3), Claire Redfield(#21), Tidus (#27), Shadow(#30), Morrigan (#33), Felix(#35), Strider(#37), Yuna(#39), Kasumi(#42), Ramza(#45), Ken(#48), Duke Nukem(#52), Servbot(#56), Protoman(#57), Fox McCloud(#65), Sam Fisher(#67), Lara Croft(#74).

Link (Final Four) - 63,913 votes
Link (Championship) - 64,443

Cloud (Final Four) - 59,867 votes
Cloud (Championship) - 59,910

Pretty impressive that they both went up slightly in terms of individual votes. ^_^

Ghaleon: One of the four Heroes of Althena, later the Magic Emperor and general badass from the Lunar games. One of the first doublecasters in RPGs. Bordering on obsessive concerning the Goddess Althena.

Dekar: The Man Who Forgot How to Lose, the best pure fighter in Lufia II. Master of over 100 attacking techniques, a Knight of Bound. Not particularly bright, but one of the bravest men in the world.

I don't see him beating the characters in the 24% to 26% range.

I think a "mid-20s" is actually much more respectable than it was before because Link has increased

I don't see him beating the characters in the 24% to 26% range.

I could see him going inch for inch against Luigi and possibly beat Vercetti. That qualifies at mid-20's against Link. Besides, my original statement was meant to be taken as in percentage.

He doesn't have any lesser role than Mario would have in SM64 DS. In fact, you start off playing the game as Yoshi--who has to find Mario, Luigi, and Wario to make them playable. His role in M&L:SS, while extremely cool, turned many people off. If I don't see a boost from some of the Mario cast within this coming year I'll definitely be disappointed. The characters in the series have such a great line-up ahead.

Benefit:
-Solid Snake. He's got a recognizable name for gamers, and his pictures have so far been horrible.
-Kefka. He has no good pictures, save his sprite.
-Mario. More a case of not being hurt by it, I suppose.
-Ryu. Which one, you might ask? All of them would benefit from the Residual Ryu Effect, where they can leech off of the others' popularity among casuals.

Hurt:
-Master Chief.
-Gordon Freeman.
-Dante.

What about Sora/Zelda? The gut reaction, of course, is Zelda, but we have to consider how Mega Man collapsed against Link. Zelda's rating is based on Mega Man. What if he underperformed on her? Now, you're probably thinking that's rather unlikely, but remember that Lara Croft was under Zelda. If Zelda overperformed on Mega Man, Lara's fall this year isn't nearly as sharp.

Contest Stats and Discussion - Part 82
From: cyko | Posted: 10/7/2004 11:24:10 PM | Message Detail
Did anyone ever come up with sff-adjusted stats for 2k3 and 2k2? creative doesn't have any on sc2k4.com and I know we discussed about adjusting them but I can't find any complete adjusted stats...

King Morgoth, off the top of my head, the only two characters i can think of that you forgot to adjust are Aya Brea and Bub from the massive SFF Donkey Kong suffered at the hands of Mario. if all the other characters are at their SFF adjusted values, then Aya and Bub should also be.

that would put Aya Brea in 34th place at 24.78% between Morrigan and Luigi (and ahead of DK, lol). Bub would be in 58th place at 19.26% between Servbot and Protoman.

That makes me ask this: if these battles never had a picture, who do you think would benefit the most and be hurt the most from not having a picture?

Kefka would really be helped out a lot, while Crono and Shadow the Hedgehog would be hurt the most.

i dunno if anyone has mentioned this yet, but has anyone else considered the possibility that Squall dropped a bit this year rather than Kirby and Bomberman (Squall's first two opponents) gaining a similar amount of strength without either of them having a new game or any reason to gain strength? i honetly think Squall's Kingdom Hearts boost has worn off a bit and he was awarded too much SFF in the SFF adjusted standings.

here's some numbers:

in 2K3, Kirby and Bomberman were in the same 4-pack in 2k3 and Bomberman was expected to get 37.19% against Kirby. in 2K4, they were in the same 4-pack again and Bomberman was expected to get 38.78% against Kirby, which isn't too far off.

so, if you use Kirby as the character of the 4-pack who stayed the same strength and use Kirby's X-Stat value against Cloud in 2K3 (which was 25.49%) that would project Squall to get 28.04% against Cloud (instead of the 23.79% he got due to SFF or the 31.72% he was projected to get last year). that 28.04% against Cloud would give Squall a X-Stat value of 27.06% against Link this year.

that would make creativename's SFF X-Stat list look like this:

16) 29.84% Ryu
17) 28.88% Bowser
18) 27.74% Alucard
19) 27.38% Auron
20) 27.06% Squall

21) 26.97% Sora

Squall really doesn't look out of place there, especially if he did drop a bit, which he really appears to have done. since Auron appears to have received some SFF against Cloud last year, he probably is at about the same level as Squall. Bowser and Alucard's SFF rankings are also a bit of guess, so Squall might be a bit below them now, or they may be a bit higher than they should be. that only leaves Ryu who jumped ahead of Squall, and he might have also gotten a boost from the SF Collection anyways. so Squall still really doesn't look out of place, even with the suspected drop.

based on that, Kirby's X-Stat value would be lowered to 24.35% putting him here on creativename's X-Stat list:

22) 25.49% Dante
23) 25.35% Tidus
24) 25.22% Vivi
25) 25.22% Yoshi
26) 24.94% Shadow the Hedgehog
27) 24.94% Knuckles
28) 24.35% Kirby

29) 24.17% Tommy Vercetti

Kirby looks much more where he should be there than he did above Dante, Yoshi, and Knuckles - all characters he has always been below. since Kirby really hasn't done anything over the past year, i do not see any way he could have suddenly gained enough popularity to jump ahead of Knuckles, Yoshi, and Dante.

finally, using Kirby as the characterr who stayed the same (instead of Squall) drops Bomberman down to a X-Stat value of 19.08% which puts him here on creativename's list:

35) Ryu Hayabusa 20.65%
36) Jill Valentine 20.64%
37) Viewtiful Joe 19.63%
38) Scorpion 19.25%
39) Ness 19.14%
40) Duke Nukem 19.09%
41) Bomberman 19.08%

42) HK-47 18.58%

again, Bomberman looks placed much more realistically there than ahead of Ryu H., Jill (who already beat Bomberman 58% to 42% two years ago), Scorpion, and Ness (at least, Ness without the SFF he took from Bowser).

oh, and that would put Kain at 17.22% against Link for adjustment's sake.

so, yeah, i honestly believe that Squall has dropped a bit from last year rather than Kirby and Bomberman both taking big strength jumps. does anyone else agree?

in fact, Creativename and RPGuy, you both should take this adjustment into account on your X-Stat lists.

I was wondering what you guys thought on this subject. Is there any chance for a new FF7 on this site. We know FF7 is supreme here, the only thing that rivals it is Link with all his Zelda games behind him. So is there any chance for another game like this?

I'm not taking that into account, because Kirby, Bomberman, Alucard, Gordon Freeman, and Max Payne all have 2 things in common: they were all in the same half division last year and they all overperformed this year. All of them rose in the XS, too, with the exception of Freeman, and Fisher's pathetic performance against Samus might have something to do with that. I think Squall is a strong enough character

And in my stats, Bman is behind Jill/Hayabusa, though not by much.

Nothing lasts forever...but alot of things last for a really really long time. FF7's been immensely popular here for a really long time, so its time as #1 should be coming to an end in the near future. Until then, watch out; Cloud and gang still rule supreme and will for a while longer.

Ulti, that still doesn't answer the question on everyone's mind - will there be the chance for guest writeups, for characters that neither of you are too familiar with?

I severely doubt it. It was hard enough to get two people thinking the same way when it came to proper formatting and such. Adding any more people would only cause problems. Letting one person do a guest writeup would only cause other people to want to do the same, and before you know it, we have 100 different people doing 100 different pages within a week. It would kind of kill the fun for MMX and me, you know? =(

There's that, plus the fact that it was hard as anything for MMX to ask me to help him in the first place. You have to realize that I have password access to every area of his site. You can't trust any random person with that sort of thing.

Well its not just that, because the new FF7 stuff should able to keep its popularity up. Its weird. Some series explode and some just come.

Mario exploded. Final Fantasy exploded (though you could argue that FFIII/VI showed it on the rise). GTA exploded. Halo Exploded.

Zelda just came. Some may argue that it exploded at OOT, but Zelda and LTTP were popular game. It just seem to build up steam with each game.
Mega Man was the same way. And for a more modern example, Resident Evil even though its on a more sudden decline than most.

But only FFVII has exploded at this site.

Mega Man was the same way. If anything, that series has lost a ton of the steam it once had.

In Final Fantasy's defense, it was huge right out of the gate. A huge fanbase was there after Final Fantasy, and the series experienced a huge boom after the release of Final Fantasy 4. If you own the FFC strategy guide, there is a wonderful bio about FF4's history in there. Some would argue that the rise that took place after FF4 was far larger than the one that took place after FF6. We all know about Final Fantasy 7's effect, but the fact of the matter is that because of FF4/5/6, there was already a very large library of very well-done Final Fantasy titles. If anything, it can be argued that Final Fantasy 7's success came from FF7 living up to the hype moreso than how well-done the game itself was.

Zelda was the same way. You can argue that OOT was the explosion of the series, but there was already a massive fanbase in place beforehand.

wow i just got modded for covering up a naughty word. i've never seen unmodded ***'s before /sarcasm. anyways, i'm about 15 hours into final fantasy x for my first time ever and i think i've come to a revelation of sorts. so far final fantasy 10 is really freakin' good. i mean, sure the voice acting is pretty horrible, but it's a pretty sweet game. it has everything that you could ask for in an rpg except for maybe it's a little lacking in storyline. so then i wonder, why do i still love ff7 so much more? and then i realized what makes an rpg...the music. maybe i'm way off, but ff7 has the most memorable music out of the whole series. off the top of my head i can recall several songs from that game and i can't even remember the music for balamb garden in ff8 right now. bad music or not memorable music kills an rpg. so far though, ffx is looking to be one of my favorite rpg's of all time next to ff7 and suikoden's 1 and 2. also as a side note...

ps - my 3 karma loss isn't that bad b/c now i get to celebrate my 600 karma day all over again! woo hoo!

Truth be told, my FF8 review was wrote simply to make Steinershocker laugh. I dislike FF8, but not nearly that much. I've played through the game twice, and it isn't that bad. Squall's character takes a dive because of Rinoa more than anything, and I can easily see how a lot of people can relate to the way Squall is. Many of us would like to stick up for ourselves, but far too often do we let our true feelings idle inside of our own heads and simply listen to instruction dilligently. In fact, that describes most people. Had it not been for Rinoa, Squall's character could have done what we were all hoping for: to develop and mature in ways that we are simply uncapable of as real-life human beings. Instead, he goes from being introverted to simply being confused. He takes a huge step backwards, and that sucks. Not just for his character, but the people who could have really liked him otherwise.

But even if that means nothing to you, he redeems himself in Kingdom Hearts.

Final Fantasy VII's soundtrack on the whole is average, though it does have some very awesome pieces (Weapon Raid and Aeris's Theme being among my favorites). Final Fantasy VIII's soundtrack is only rivaled by Tactics within the series.

I don't particularly like that much of VII or VIII's soundtracks, though there are very good songs in there. Chrono Cross is my favorite PSX era soundtrack, by far.

As FFX goes, I liked it. Sure, you have to press an minimum of 11 buttons to level up, and the sphere grid is clunky, but it's a nice take on things. The story was pretty good, even if the voice acting for Yuna made me want to stab myself. The Wagon System (named for DWIV, of course) is always nice, and I used most every character when normally I pick 3 or 4 and stick with them.

to develop and mature in ways that we are simply uncapable of as real-life human beings.

Squall still did, though it revolved around his unquenchable desire to be with Rinoa and protect her from disc 3 on. The only reason he's willing to go out into space to rescue her is because he'd rather die than live without her. Seeing her fall into a coma reminds him of how helpless he was when Ellone left his life as a child, and he absolutely refuses to let that happen again. Squall is determined to do something about it. He couldn't stand to let her become another "Ellone." At first, he mostly wanted to protect her, almost out of duty though he still wanted to be with her. And then he finally overcomes his natural instinct just to do his duty for good when he rescues Rinoa from the Sorceress Memorial because he realized that just protecting her wasn't good enough if he didn't get to be with her.

And it's quite obvious that Squall has some feelings for Rinoa before disc 3. Don't tell me he started caring for her out of nowhere. He was smitten with her from the beginning. You can tell by the way he looks at her after they dance.

Yay for late night rants.

I really liked FFVIII's soundtrack. I thought it was one of the better ones out of all the Final Fantasy games (though I still prefer FFVII's to pretty much everything else from the series). The four-disc OST is great to listen to straight through once in a while, too.

Ah, the Xenogears soundtrack. Never have I been so divided on the issue of whether or not to purchase something. The soundtrack is great but, on the other hand, it reminds me of the game, which reminds me of the second disc of the game, which reminds me of wanting to shoot myself in the face. Id's theme (whatever it's called) is awesome. I like the Xenosaga soundtrack a bit better, but that could just be because I'm more partial to the game. And because "Albedo" is the best theme music for any character, ever. It suits him so perfectly.

Mario exploded? I mean, Mairo has been a pretty popular guys since back when he was hanging out with DK. SMB1 is still the game to have the most copies made of it, like, ever. And yeah, Zelda has always been big, since the very first game. though I have to disagree about it continuously gaining steam... WW hurt it in the eyes of the general public (one of the least selling Zelda games), and even in the XSt it looks like the game could somehow be a detractor for Link.

I Enjoyed 7's sdtk more than 8's by a fair bit, just for a few shining examples. As a whole, 8's is probably better. I'd take 4-6 and Tactics over either of them any day of the week. And yeah, Chrono Cross has one of the best Sdtks ever. I also love SoM. Again, that's probably a matter of shining examples more than consistantly good work. LoM also grea. Yes, Square makes a fairly good amount of tolerable music.

Really, I wish we could have a music tournament here on GameFAQs. That'd rock so much. I miss doing the music tournament... if my schedual wasn't so insanely inconsistant I would probably run another one.

"Seriously, it was so big that the first true sequel got a MOVIE TO HYPE IT!"

You mean the first true sequel to come to America. And really, the Super Mario Bros. series was big from the first game, if you don't count Mario Bros (which I don't, as it's an entirely different sort of game). Zelda was also big from the start. Mega Man was, too. Mega Man 2 and 3 were much bigger, but the first was still a pretty big deal. A real classic.

Zelda is different. Mario has basically held the same level of fanbase through the N64 days then a decline. There was go incline. Just a burst then hold.

Zelda was popular but not THAT popular. LTTP was more popular. OOT was more popular. WW was a set back, but Zelda XI could help push the series back to OOT levels.

Nope, only OoT has outsold the original, and at that it is only by one million units. Heck, even if you take into account the rerelease of LttP on gameboy AND don't count any re-releases of the original I don't think it's passed up the original yet. Really, the series has always been big. As I said, OoT only outsold the original by about a million units, that's nearly a decade later when gaming was much, much larger industry.

No, I'm talking world-wide sales, whihc puts the original at what, 6.8 mil or so. LttP outsold WW quite well. In fact, I think Link's Awakening is probably the only Zelda game other than the three abominations that WW can really look down upon in any sort of way.

If it doesn't sell 4 million units world wide I'll be saying goodbye to a logn time favorite series of mine. WW is nearly at 4 million units, and in fact if I'm not making a mistake here, Majora's Mask is nearly at 4 mil too. Both Oracle games are nearly 4 million individually. IIRC Zelda 2 was well up there too. If the game doesn't break 4 million the world will likely cease to exist.

Minish Cap is Zelda X.

Ulti/MMX, you should use the world map theme for Cloud's page. For Aeris's, you better use the orchestrated version. Also, Ganondorf's theme isn't working for me. Would it be possible to put an mp3 on there instead of a WMA or whatever that was?

Why the hell is that game so rare anyways? I guess a more wholistic question is why the hell don't these companies make enough copies of the games? I mean you look at something like Chrono Trigger or Suikoden II, which has genuine demand that far exceeds supply, and it costs them what? maybe 10 bucks in variable costs? The majority of their costs comes from R&D, so some memory chips with a plastic encasing and a dust cover and a burned cd with a plastic jewel case really does not break the Konami or Square bank. I don't know about the demand for DPS, but I saw Chichiri talking about the game and its rarity a few topics back, and decided to look into it on eBay, and dear lord, did whatever company make that game make a mistake not producing more copies.

For PDS, I believe that there are anywhere from 5,000 to 15,000 copies in the U.S. - I've seen figures in that range.

And considering that it is supposed to be an amazing game and it is very rare, that drives the price way up.

Which is why I want to stab Sega for not remaking it.

If they did, what system would they throw it on? Would Sega pimp it out to the highest bidder, or would they go Sonic with it and just multi-console it?

I also just noticed CJayC wrote a review on it. No wonder it made it into the Spring Contest. If there are only 5k-15k copies in the US of the game, with no remakes, there is not a chance in hell it would have garned enough nominations to oust games like Chrono Cross. Unless, of course, The Ceejus wrote a review on it.

Which is again the main reason why I believe we saw the Prince Ryu picture. You would think his bracket would make the top 50 given all of the specific knowledge he has that probably only a few select moderators are also given before brackets close down.

Wrote a review for it? He wrote a walkthrough/guide for it. =P

And it could get in - I know of a few PDS forums that have a couple hundred members. They could certainly get GameFAQs accounts to nominate it and I doubt it took that many nominations to get in...

And the game has gone around on Ebay a lot, so I bet more than the original 5 - 15K people have played it.

It could've gotten in legitimately, I think.

Oops. That is what I meant. Too early in the morning to function coherently.

Just picked up Dekar in Lufia II. At the rate I am going, should have it beaten by Sunday if all goes according to plan. That plan of course being not doing any homework or going out. Doesn't exactly sound like Alucard's, but it will suit me just fine.

If I totally remember correctly, they really overpriced CT, which led to it not selling great, which probably is the reason why there isn't many copies of it around.

They overpriced every SNES game, really. But fr those willing to wait the prices ALWAYS went down. It was pretty much like it is now, just with higher starting and ending points.

Checking the reviews on PDS I find it funny that the person that gave it the lowest score (a two) gave Chrono Trigger a three.

Yeah, PDS got basically one of the smallest releases ever seen in the US. Low numbers happen like than on occasion in Japan... but usually they wont bother here with such a small release (though they do it pretty grudgingly in Japan).

Just reminds me of how little Konami's music games are selling in Japan. Keyboard Mania 2/3 sold less copies than the US release of PDS (Which is typically estimated at around 6,000). Oh well, I'm sure you guys aren't concerned about how Beatmania IIDX 7th style looked like it'd never come out and how the Konami rep at TGS basically said they won't be making another DDR for the arcades (bastard). Imma get ready for work...

JOke votes and anti-votes are extremely minimal. Many of those votes are from people who have heard that it's one of the best RPGs even and voted "on principle". Hell, I have no doubt people nominated it under the same reasoning.

Oh, and also, it seems that more copies of PDS were realeased in Europe than the US. Go figure. Either way, there's also JP copies and the fact that the game is constantly resold on Ebay. I don't actually find it impossible or even unlikely that the game has had that many people play it.

I voted for Suikoden II over Final Fantasy VII on principle. Then I went out and actually bought the game because of all the board hype. One of the smartest things I have ever done; right up there with not riding my bike into the parked car my best friend did when we were 7.

I've voted on principle before. I never played the first Shining Force, only the second, and based on my experience with the second I voted for the first.

I nominated on princible a few times too. None of those got in, though. Heh.

I believed that CT sold ~700,000 copies in North America, compared to ~250,000 copies for FFC. I'm at uni right now, so I don't have the documents on me, but I can confirm when I get home.

The jury is still out on whether or not he will let us, in some way, help construct a future tournament bracket.

And the spellchecker is just there for show, no other reason. If anyone actually cares enough to see if they made a typo, they are in far worse condition than the majority of us, who merely spend lots of time on a video game message board.

Yeah, we have to wait to see what Ceej says. It's not going to stop us from speculating and making brackets anyway, though.

Hopefully not...

It would destroy the contest with biased users creating the bracket

Magus and Zero as 3rd seeds
Newcomers including Dr.Wily and other obsceure characters
Facing Mario and Sonic off in the sweet 16? One massive fanbase will lose intrest too early.

Why wont anybody let Shadow into the sweet 16? Why does he have to have a difficult round 1 match?
