Just make sure that you use that conveniently placed missile reload room just before him and pwn him with super missiles when you've knocked off the armour, which you should do with supers as well, unless you're short, then use charged plasma shots. For the most part, ignore the Space Pirates that appear when OP disappears, you've probably got time to kill one of them before you can damage OP.

Few more opinions requested on how to set Mega Man, Sonic, Mario and Crono against Snake, Zero, Magus and Aeris here:

At 05:00:01

Link 9024
Cloud 8968
Total 17992

At 05:00:01

Cloud 8668
Samus 6191
Total 14859

So we've got 21% more votes than yesterday at the same stage. Pulled out over the whole match, that equates to 122K+ votes :-)

This is really not looking good for Cloud right now. ;_;

At the very least, he did two things. He did challenge Link and he did keep it so there is no

Link (2002)-----> Clinkeroth (2003) ------> Link (2004)

Looks like Link is going to have to make room for Cloud in the upper echelon.

And who knows. Maybe this is just the morning vote and the day vote will either help Cloud or be split. Then if Cloud can get a night vote he can still win. Bigger leads have been broken.

The disparity between morning/day/evening/night votes during Sunday isn't as big as other days. Link is just beginning to show his overall strength right now, his going to keep building this lead into thousands. But today does prove one thing. Boost that Cloud got in 2003 > Whatever boost Link got in 2004. Link would have had far easier time beating CLoud in 2002.

Does anybody STILL disagree with me when I say that RPG characters primarily have a different fanbase than other characters? It's not the SFF that we are accustomed to, but it is why Mega Man had no chance against Link.

I think Zylo the Wolf explanation was also excellent. Due to Cloud and Link being so popular, Nintendo fans vote Cloud unless he's up against one of their own, and the same with Square fans and Link. That might also be a reason why Mega Man and Sonic did so bad against Link and Cloud.

But anyways, I'm not surprised Cloud is keeping it so close. I knew he had a chance, but I didn't think he was THAT much stronger than Crono. I guess he is, unless Crono vote stuffers from 2k2 have leveled up their vote stuffing skills and now support Cloud. <_< It might TAKE a lot of vote stuffing, but if this match keeps up the way it is, my tie breaker might not look so bad....

Will Ceej use tiebreakers to sort out ALL of the scores on the leaderboard? Or are they only used for the top 10? I KNOW I can pass a lot of the 188s with my tiebreaker....

Link's % last update: 52.90%
Total Votes so far: 29888"

"Updates Left: 66

"Updates Left: 65

Also compared Cloud vs. Samus, it is 5,499 votes ahead at the 7:45 Update. ^_^

Wow. I'm actually shocked that Cloud bothered to attempt at challenging Link in this match. I'm also surprised that Cloud is actually this close to him. I never expected Cloud to put up this much of a fight... at all. Despite, Link is doing a great job of having the lead of nearly 2000. He shouldn't have a problem extending this out throughout the rest of the day.

No need to remove Link/Cloud from this contest. Just stick them in the same division. It takes care of plenty of brackets early and allows for the rest of the contest to remain hard to predict.

I have never liked that idea. I don't even like Cloud and Sephiroth in the same division because it's not fair to them. They should have the right to meet in the finals because they're the strongest. And all 3 should be 1 seeds, or not be in the contest at all.

I do want to see this match next year as well, but as many people have done it is possible for Ceej to make a bracket with very accurate seedings and still have a lot of good matches. I say let them have the 1 seeds they deserve, and meet in the finals.

I don't really like that idea, i mean technically that would make the brackets hard to predict, but if you're gonna leave Link and Cloud in the contest, then at least let the top 2 make it to the finals. Otherwise just take them out. Because regardless it'll be Link or Cloud that wins for the most of the future.

or this:

2 Divisions
Division 1
1) Link

Division 2
1) Sephiroth

What would be the purpose of running this contest year after year to see the same finals with the same winner? We saw that this year and we almost had a host of perfect brackets. It is much harder to predict by sticking them in the same division.

Otherwise just take them out. Because regardless it'll be Link or Cloud that wins for the most of the future.

It will be one of those two, but having the same finals year after year wouldn't exactly be the greatest thing to see.

This one. Sephiroth is very beatable by Samus, besides no need to stack one division with Cloud, Link, and Sephiroth.

It will be one of those two, but having the same finals year after year wouldn't exactly be the greatest thing to see.

Ok but wouldn't those who make it past the Link vs Cloud match have an easy final to predict. We've already learned this summer that Link and Cloud are way above the other memebers of the noble nine. So no one else would have a chance anyways, even Sephiroth was murdered by Cloud this year.

I really like the idea of retiring winners after this summer, before I was against it because then there would never be "true" winners. But having a Hall of Fame would be kinda cool. At least Sephiroth was down at Samus' level this year so the finals could still be interesting.

You pretty much would get a lesser finals match, but having that one incredibly crucial match to predict correctly (Link/Cloud) along with a host of other hard matches throughout the bracket make it a lot more interesting. The final four would be harder to predict, that one very important Elite 8 match, etc. It's either that or retire both of them, and I'm not exactly crazy about that idea when there's an easy enough solution.

Character popularity can change on a dime. As we've seen before the character doesn't have to receive the "Best. Game. Ever." in order to increase by quite a margin. I still stand by the statement--assuming the contest is still running--that Mario will be winning this contest in a couple of years.

I can see Mario getting much stronger in the future too, but he'll always lose to Link. 2003 was basically Link's lowest state with Wind Waker hating and all, and he still would have slaughtered Mario. I don't think even a new revolutionary Mario game can help his cause against Link. Even if Mario can be strong enough to beat Cloud, Link just isn't a good matchup for him.

So you think that Mario will ever beat Link? As much as I'd love for that to happen, the only way Mario will win is if Link is retired. A good 60% of Nintendo fans prefer Zelda games to Mario games. That percent could be even higher. The amount of SFF in that match will always stop Mario from beating Link. But its definately something I'd love to see happen.

Question.....

In a lot of the new pseudo extrapolated rankings, I'm seeing people replace Magus and Ganondorf with their 2k3 values. This leaves them both at 30%+ against Link. However, they are leaving Tidus as is, which places him in the low 20s. Doesn't this show some kind of discrepency? Shouldn't Magus and Ganondorf be somewhat closer to Tidus? I think there should be some kind of middle estimate to figure out where they fall this year....

Taking out half the brackets (or around there) on one match isn't an exciting contest to me. It means instead of a true finals that is for 32 points, it creates an early round match worth more than 50. :: nod :: In my last "pre-final" rankings, I have them rated as follows:

13) Magus - 27.10%
14) Ganondorf - 27.02%

26) Tidus - 22.82%

It's the most accurate setup I could come up with, and I think it's fairly dead-on...however, I don't think that Ganondorf would necessarily do any better against Tidus this year than he did against him last year. I simply feel that Ganondorf was a prime opponent to bring out the best in Tidus: a non-playable (outside of SSB:M) villain from the crown jewel series of the Nintendoverse. Tidus will never have more Square support than he did from that matchup...thus, it made for a wicked close result, which led to him looking very impressive in the extrapolateds. But when it comes down to it, this is still Tidus we're talking about...you know, the guy who put up 55% against Claire Redfield in 2002. And you can be damn sure that Magus and Ganondorf wouldn't throw up stinker numbers like that against the likes of Claire Redfield.

I just got tired of these people who wouldn't shut up about Link dominating from start to finish just because he doubled up Mega Man. Oh, by the way, Link is staying consistent to what he did on Crono, not Mega Man. Something happened with the Blue Bomber. There's no denying it.

Also, I don't necessarily agree with Link vs. Cloud being before the Final Four. Why make the matches that are worth the most so easy?

I don't think there's any doubt that Square's #1 vs. Nintendo's #1 is the biggest draw, looking at these vote totals.

I can't believe how stupid some of these people suggesting that Cloud and Link be retired are.

So they'll always dominate the later rounds; the big question is, who the **** cares? The Elite 8 and beyond takes up 1/8 of the contest. That's right. ONE EIGHTH.

The first two rounds are the most exciting, and guess what? They take up 3/4 of the contest.

ChichiriMuyo, I had nearly the EXACT same tiebreaker amount for Link. I forgot where exactly, but my logic was that the Summer Contest would draw higher vote totals than the Spring contest, but less than SC2k3. It took until the FINALS to reach those type of numbers however....

Anyways, I wish CJayC would put the 188s in order of tiebreakers so I can see where I rank....

Well, perhaps Sonic just went up up up . . .

And I am entirely against removing Link and Cloud, I think that would completely slaughter the vote totals, and why have the best character not win? I'm semi with Heroic over here saying just stick them in the same division, but then, I don't think that's fair to them either. But also, leaving them as they are has produced different results every time, and as we've seen just because you're distanced from the whole flock of people, doesn't mean you'll still beat Mr. #2

Megaman won his division, made it to the final 4, we're all in agreement that he's easily one of the top competitors in this tournament.

He lost to Link 68-32.

Correct me if I'm wrong. The purpose of all this analysis is to judge a person's progress, advancments, and strength. What's the point of it all if even the top competitors in the tournament can't come within 60-40 of Link? It's my honest opinion that only 2 people in this tournament could probably come within 60-40 of either Link or Cloud, and that's Sephiroth and Samus.

Megaman, Crono, and Mario should be close to that in theory, but look how they all fared this year and last year.

Retire em. This contest serves no point when we already know who's won. Unless they meet in an earlier round, it will /always/ be Link/Cloud in the finals for many years to come, in my opinion.

If Link beats Cloud in the Final Four and then faces Seph in the Final, Seph could put on a show rivaling Cloud's performance.

"Mega Man and Solid Snake in accordance to the 2004 extrapolated rankings."

Umm, no. Mega Man is still quite likely to rank above Sonic. Haven't done the math, but with Cloud losing to Link it will boost M up compared to Sonic for sure. The only elite that has fallen badly is Snake.

Link needs over 53% for Mega Man to rank above Sonic. Doesn't look likely to happen as Cloud is climbing toward 48% as we speak.

Link 50.00%
Cloud 47.50%
Sephiroth 41.80%
Samus 38.94%
Crono 37.18%
Mario 34.77%
Sonic 33.09%
Mega Man 32.39%
Solid Snake 27.73%

Obviously assuming Link wins this with 52.5%

Notice how Sonic is over Mega Man? I didn't post this originally btw. Ultimatelifeform did here: http://boards.gamefaqs.com/gfaqs/detail.php?board=8&topic=16656247&message=175740863

If Link beats Cloud with 53%...

Knuckles: 22.44%
Tails: 21.18%

Don't tell me Tails is supposed to be that close to Knuckles. >.< Also, don't tell me Knuckles dropped that much in relation to Sonic...

If the '03 Knuckles/Sonic proportion still applied and Link beat Cloud with 53%, Mega Man should've achieved 35.83% against Link. Hey, that means Mega Man and Mario are matched almost exactly the same as last year in that case.

Auron's just cool like that.

Also the offseason will be spent discussing the 20XXF methinks. Megaman's underpeformance on Link screwed the whole division. Also, the Frog/LS/MC/Crash 4-pack suffers heavily because they have long paths to Link. Frog/LS/MC don't deserve that...

I think it's pretty obvious that Link got a nice boost this year. These are non SFF adjusted, and I'm trying to come up with a good static character to base SFF adjustments on. I'm thinking Mario right now.

Static Mario = 4.47% boost for Link
Static Cloud = 3.95% boost for Link

Those are the only two in the middle of the pack that I'd consider being static...I think I'm going to base SFF adjustments on Mario, though, because a 4.5% boost for Link is consistent with his own matches and Cloud was pretty volatile between 2k2 and 2k3, whereas Mario was fairly steady.

Mario hasn't given us a performance consistent with his 2003 self all contest, though there's a viable explanation for all of that. New opponent, SFF match, and increase for his old rival. It did predict the match with Crono very well with Link (through CATS), though it causes Cloud to overperform today.

I ran into a rough spot with Zero:

Mega Man 32.39%
Ryu 29.47%
Zero 28.50%
Solid Snake 27.73%

No adjustment = Zero gets 28.5% on Link
Static Mario = Zero gets 30.31% on Link
Static Cloud = Zero gets 30.65% on Link

Adjuting by Cloud seems to give him a little too much. Heck, adjusting him by Mario gives him too much.

Frog, Master Chief, and Liqud are coming out of this year looking VERY good. As things stand, I have them ranked 15th, 16th, and 17th respectively.

I'm especially impressed with MC this year. With Halo 2 on the horizon, he could be very dangerous in SC2K5 (and beyond) if X-Box hate continues to fade. In fact, if he were to get the right draw next year...say, ending up with Sonic and Solid Snake as the top two seeds in his division, and avoiding an underseeded powerhouse like Aeris...I'd put MC in the final four.

I've never done an Xst calculation (odd, I know), so let me make sure I'm doing this right.

The formula is C/(B/A) = C's Percentage against A, correct?

With that formula, how would you figure out the expected percentage that one character would be expected to get against a character that isn't the champion? I'm trying to figure out what 2003 Pac Man would get on 2003 Luigi, but what percentage would I need to plug into the formula besides Luigi and Pac Man's 2003 Xst percentage? Pac Man/(Luigi/Cloud) would only yield Pac Man's percentage against Cloud, right?

Sorry if I sound really newbie-ish, but I seriously have yet to do one of these calculations on my own. I usually just read off everyone else's numbers >_>

Hmmmm, with a slow day in this topic, I will go ahead and post my thoughts about some of my favorite characters in this contest and their respective performances. I'm getting it out of the way now since I have a test, program due, and statement of purpose to write all this week. Thank God this contest is over. Now I don't have any diversions! I'll post a few things right now and post the rest later.

Sonic:
Well, I wished he would have done better on Samus but I'm pleased with the results. Sonic most likely will be ranked above Mega Man. Now everyone KNOWS this shouldn't be true. But I hope this quells the thoughts that Magus would beat Sonic.

Zero:
Extremely impressed with Zero. I don't believe in reverse SFF. Zero has been around since the SNES days. It's not like he's some bad-ass new character in the series like Shadow. He has built up his own fanbase and all of his performances are legit. I think he could stick it to all the people who rank around him (Snake, Ryu, Auron, Aeris, Magus, etc...) This might be the Zero fan in me talking though....

Ryu Hayabusa:
Meh, I'm not really complaining because he probably wouldn't have beat Sora no matter WHAT Ryu we saw. But I'm EXTREMELY pissed that CJayC refused to use ANY Ninja Gaiden pics in this contest. Ryu wasn't put in this contest because of DOA. He's in here because of Ninja Gaiden on X-BOX!!! And he had the NES games to back him up. Why the hell would he decide to use DOA pictures? We still haven't seen a true representation of Ryu in this contest. If he isn't back next year, he would be the most buttsecked character EVAR. Next year I plan to nominate Ryu Hayabusa, Rikimaru, Ayame, Testumaru, Taki, AND I-Ninja so they can all come and flip out on Ceej.

Yeah, I know. Samus and MC are the only characters who gained relative to Link this year that were not affected by SFF or in Seph's mysterious half division last year. That's why I'm extremely wary of saying there was an 20XXDF, and I probably won't do anything with it at all.

I don't think that Magus and Ganondorf's figures should be used as is in this contest. Looking at where Tidus stands this year, Magus/Link may be an oddity. Even though Link is obviously stronger this year, Magus did better against Link than Mega Man and about the same as Crono. Square characters seem to step up their performance against Link.....

There shouldn't be that large a gap between Magus/Ganon and Tidus. Maybe Ganondorf's performance against Alucard is his true strength, not being a Nintendo vs. Square match.... Where would Ganon's performance against Alucard place him in 2k3?

But back to the point, one needs the full Xsts against the champion before figuring out what one character would get on someone else.

See, that's where a lot of oddities come from. The Xsts are useful to a point when deciding what range characters may get against the champion, but a lot of other variables come into play when those characters go against each other.

50 * CvA / BvA = CvB

50 * PacVsLink / LuigiVsLink = PacVsLuigi

So if I wanted to see what Samus would get without SFF against Link, I would do 50 * (40.99/47.62) and come up with 43.04. Does that sound right?

That last post wasn't for BeTheMan's rankings. I think they might be pretty accurate.

I agree with Ulti though. The X-stats give a good range, but how characters perform against each other are different. How each character WILL perform is up to you though! That should ALWAYS be kept a secret as it's the only thing that can give you a leg up in this contest.

No, sorry. You're taking

50 * SamusVsCloud / CloudVsLink = SamusVsLink

If you look at the original formula, you need to do a little algebraic manipulation to get the result you want.

C = Samus
B = Cloud
A = Link

50 * CvA / BvA = CvB

CvB * BvA / 50 = CvA

SamusVsCloud * CloudVsLink / 50 = SamusVsLink
40.99 * 47.62 / 50 = 39.03%

By the way, I adjusted Magus, Ganondorf, Bowser, Zero, Vivi, and Auron by the following:

Get Magus [2003] vs Mario [2003]

Use Magus/Mario [2003] * Mario [2004] / 50 to get Magus [2004]

The same for the others, except Vivi is based off of DK and I really can't remember what Auron is based off of. I think it's Dante and Tails. I found a bunch of calculations saved in notepad, and I used the Auron [2003] percent from in there.

No, sorry. You're taking

50 * SamusVsCloud / CloudVsLink = SamusVsLink

If you look at the original formula, you need to do a little algebraic manipulation to get the result you want.

C = Samus
B = Cloud
A = Link

50 * CvA / BvA = CvB

CvB * BvA / 50 = CvA

SamusVsCloud * CloudVsLink / 50 = SamusVsLink
40.99 * 47.62 / 50 = 39.03%

Oh, okay.

So if I wanted to see what Mega Man would get on Cloud, I would do,

A = Link
B= Cloud
C= Mega Man

50 * CvA/BvA = CvB

50 * (Mega Man vs Link)/(Cloud vs Link) = Mega Man vs Cloud

50 * 32.39/47.64 = 33.99

Meaning Mega Man would get 33.99% on Cloud. Or am I just stupid...

It's also fun to play with stats and imagine what might happen in certain matchups, or look at what's going on and try to predict what will happen for the rest of the tournament.

I'm obviously no guru. I've gotten plenty wrong in this contest(I have a lousy score and my prediction originally was Cloud over Crono, after Crono barely beats Link).. but the fun is what matters.

the contest rankings are so **** up this year I don't even know where to begin.

We have Mega Man's division and the semi-final match isn't the only thing that made this division crazy Mega Man vs. Tidus, Frog vs. MC and SS vs. Frog did a lot of damage, we also have the SFF matches in the Hyrule and Midgar Division and then we have to find a new character to use as a yardstick and that could take a while and most characters in this bracket have some kind of factor on them. I think CjayC's plan work on messing with our x-st. Our best bet is to use the 2003 x-st and make a few adjustments

I know exactly what to do. Ignore it. There doesn't seem to be any real reason to believe there was any significant SFF in that match. So he performed a bit worse than last year against Cloud. It could be any number of things and SFF has been shown NOT to exist between the two already.

Put the Spring Contest in Winter. More time between contests that way, and less of an off-season.
From: HaRRicH | Posted: 10/3/2004 6:58:03 PM | Message Detail
I say we don't need more contests besides the two we got...but we still have a fall/winter tourney going on. Say towards the end of the month, CJay opens nominations for something kind of random, like a Best. Band. Ever. contest (among many other ideas we could use). We nominate, he makes another bracket with the best bands/artists/whatever, and we just vote away on that. He can have prizes and make a competition out of it if he likes, but I really wouldn't care. That'll help pass the time in the off-season, and once it ends, it wouldn't be too far away from the Best. Game. Ever. contest again.

Aye or nay?

Ceej needs an off-season as much as we do. If you really want those contests, I'm sure that there will be a user-made one on the boards here. It may not be as flashy or big as the SpC or SCs, but so what?

This contest wasn't too bad, I suppose. The ending was kind of horrible, but the beginning was good, and I finally made the leaderboard at one point, which was the highlight of the contest for me.

Well, yes, but as you go down the line the B's and C's change. For example, you can get Cloud/Link directly. You can get Samus through Samus/Cloud and Cloud/Link. You get Sonic through Sonic/Samus and the value you calculated for Samus/Link. And so on. It's fairly easy to set up an Excel spreadsheet to calculate all the values you need.

Oh well, looks like Link has it won already...

Now if only Cloud can close the gap between them to less than 1%, I'll be really happy.

With all said and done, I guess this is a decent showing by Cloud, he did beat his expected 47%.

Looks like Samus is the real winner in this contest, Link boosted massively, but she still outboost him.

Btw, who's the biggest loser in this contest?
Is it Snake or Tidus/Shadow?

I think it would be nice if Ceej took Ulti's advice and made a Hall of Fame. Think about how good next year would be if there was no Link or Cloud. Not that I don't like either character, it would just be nice to see something fresh. Although Sephiroth would most likely win, it would still be better than having Link or Cloud again. Here's hoping for a Sephiroth Samus final.

I guess it's official then, Shadow is the biggest dropper this year, with Tidus a close second.

I'm still confused about Sephy though, he dropped like a rock without any reason whatsoever while Cloud remained largely constant, dropping a little at worst.

And MM's drop make no sense either, being the ancient icon that he is, he shouldn't drop like a rock while new games are still coming out for him.

Sephiroth and Cloud are two separate characters. Just because one of them remains constant doesn't mean the other one has to follow suit.

A full 4%+, while there used to be none?

Link overperforming?

By more than 5%?
Unless there's some sort of weird SFF, it's still unjustifiable.

I'm well aware of that, except that any factor that effects one will most likely effect the other as well.

Unless AC hype does have a huge impact on holding Cloud constant.

Well, it was a good year, I was wrong on one prediction that I made after day 1. I should really learn to look at my bracket the day before contests... Anyways the match I missed just happened to be the most important one so I guess I won't be on the leaderboard this year. 155 points... And I've still never got the winner right for any contest since SC2k3.

Although Jill is definitely a very big loser this year.

Maybe outside of the board, but not in it. I think there were all of like, six people in the guru's to side with Jill, and the bop split was similar to it. No one was really givin her much of a chance, and she almost made it. I think our biggest board flop was ryu, because he didn't even keep it close to Sora.

and ulti, you said that we should retire link and cloud?

Let's see if I can do this right. Assuming 52-48 in Link/Cloud...

50 x [(Samus vs Cloud)/(Cloud vs Link)] = Samus vs Link

50 x [(40.99)/(48)] = 42.7%

Without SFF, Samus has improved by round 5% on Link in one year. Considering how Link is far more powerful this year than in any other year, that extra 5% turns into a hell of a lot more against any other character.

While Ryu was indeed a flop, he wasn't a returning contestant.

Ulti, you made the same mistake as MasterMage did last page. You're taking:

50 * SamusVsCloud / CloudVsLink = SamusVsLink

If you look at the original formula, you need to do a little algebraic manipulation to get the result you want.

C = Samus
B = Cloud
A = Link

50 * CvA / BvA = CvB

Solve for CvA (Samus vs Link)

CvB * BvA / 50 = CvA

SamusVsCloud * CloudVsLink / 50 = SamusVsLink
40.99 * 47.62 / 50 = 39.03%

Nope. That's what I did the first time too.

Try 50 * (Samus vs Cloud)/(Cloud vs Link) = Samus vs Link.

That gets you 39.41 which is correct.

The second one from the first variable is the first from the second variable.

Although Jill is definitely a very big loser this year.

Considering that she had more brackets supporting her as a 14-seed than the 3-seeded Ryu Hayabusa, then considering how close it was on BOTH days they faced, I think Ryu is indefinately more of a loser than Jill this year, even if he did beat her.

Well, Scorpion got SFF adjusted through Auron by my stats, but in unadjusted stats, you'd do this:

SephVsLink = SephVsCloud * CloudVsLink / 50
AuronVsLink = AuronVsSeph * SephVsLink / 50
ScorpVSLink = ScorpVsAuron * AuronVsLink / 50

Tidus and Shadow dropped the most, no matter how you adjust the stats

Adjust for Link's overperformance on Mega Man, and Tidus's underperformance, and voila. Heh heh.

Honestly, it makes absolutely no sense that Tidus and Shadow would have such immense drops relative to each other. Maybe Shadow did benefit from a Mario-Sonic type atmosphere last year. If that is Shadow's true strength, then Wario really sucks.

Ugh...Kirby over Alucard was getting on my nerves, so I readjust the SFF'ing for Ganondorf (which forced me to readjust for Magus and Bowser accordingly), and then I tried to give 20XX a little perk-up, so I changed Mega Man's drop-off to the level he suffered from '02 to '03, and then fixed that division accordingly...and then I moved Luigi and Yoshi back to how I originally had them set up...and I touched up the Zero + Protoman SFF'ing too...

*cla...* awww, screw it. I'm getting ready to go to a girl's house anyways.

Hey, can we petition for CJayC to have the top performers to get automatically nominated next year so we don't have to waste nominations on them? That way, we can focus on getting more new characters in the contest. That way, the contest can still be SOMEWHAT unpredictable.....

Mumei said it best. If you don't get any replies, it's probably because nobody really has anything worthwhile to say or add to it, even though they might find it interesting. Of course, the best way to avoid that is to talk about what everyone else is at the moment.

Differences between MasterMage's formula and CN's:

MM's: 50 * CvB / AvB = CvA
CN's: CvB * BvA = CvA

Now, if they resulted from the same formula, the CvA would be the same and they'd be equal. So, let's set them equal to each other.

50 * CvB / AvB = CvB * BvA / 50

The CvB's cross out, leaving us with:

50 / AvB = BvA / 50

AvB is nothing more than (100-BvA), so let's sub that in:

50 / (100 - BvA) = BvA / 50

Cross multiply:

2500 = (100 * BvA) - BvA ^ 2

So, when BvA = 50, they are equal. Otherwise, MasterMage's will be off.

First WDF now 20XXF. Megaman's underperformance (or link's overperfromance depending on how you want to see it) screwed that whole division over. Now Snake is definately out of the noble nine because of several reasons (this is just my opinion).

1. He was the lowest ranked of the noble nine

2. he was confortably outranked by zero and ryu (a character tahn he beat 57-43 last year)

3. and three he isn't projected to break 30% on link the contest winner

This match has now passed 2002's Link vs. Sephiroth and has probably passed Tom Nook vs. Crono by the time I finished typing this. That would mean it is in 39th place for vote totals.

Where do you expect it to finish?

There's three of them. :-p

C = weak character
B = strong character
C = yardstick (typically Link)

If you want to compare two characters, and you know their strength relative to the yardstick (useful during the tourney):

50 * CvA / BvA = CvB

If you want to calculate the weaker character vs the yardstick (useful to get the XS):

CvB * BvA / 50 = CvA

If you want to calculate the stronger character vs the yardstick (useful in SFF adjustments and calculating new characters):

50 * CvA / CvB = BvA

And there you have it.

Hm... Well, RPGuy corrected me on AIM and now I am POSITIVE I have this down pat.

CvB * BvA/50 = CvA

Let C = the weaker character (between C and A)

Let B = the common opponent.

Let A = the stronger character (between C and A)

So if you wanted to find Samus vs Link.

C = Samus

A = Link

40.99 x 48 = 1967.52

1967.52/50 = 39.35%

Meaning Samus would get 39.35 on Link without SFF.

RPG, if I still did this wrong... just shoot me okay?

Okay, let's make C = Duke Nukem, B = Cloud, and A = Link:

If you want to compare two characters, and you know their strength relative to the yardstick (useful during the tourney):

50 * CvA / BvA = CvB

I know that method somewhat well already...

[(19.02)/(48)] * 50 = 19.81%; Duke's expected percentage against Cloud.

If you want to calculate the weaker character vs the yardstick (useful to get the XS):

CvB * BvA / 50 = CvA

[(19.81)(48)]/50 = 19.02%; Duke's expected percentage on Link.

If you want to calculate the stronger character vs the yardstick (useful in SFF adjustments and calculating new characters):

50 * CvA / CvB = BvA

And there you have it.

[(19.02)/19.81)] * 50 = 48.01%; Cloud's expected percentage against Link.

At the very least, this match is on track to pass Zelda vs. Lara for the 10th highest vote total.

Kinda depressing that 2002 had 3 100,000+ matches and this one has only 2, despite the userbase being about three times as large for this contest.

Okay, good. I'm just doing this so that we may create formulas that are explained in layman's terms, for the benefit of both myself and those who are as confused as I am. Creativename's Xst Explanation Page is very intimidating =(

A = Strongest Character (Link is a good example)
B = Character Weaker than A (Cloud is a good example)
C = Character Weaker than B (anyone but Cloud or Link)

To figure out a character's Xsts Percentage ---> [(CvB)(BvA)]/50 = CvA

To compare how C would do against B ---> [(CvA)/(BvA)]*50 = CvB

To figure out how B would do against A ---> [(CvA)/(CvB)]*50 = BvA

Nonetheless, from here on out, it looks like the later rounds of these contests will always be predictable...hence why the first two rounds are so important.

What did Ceej decide to do with the first two rounds?

Litter them with SFF while giving us only one newbie vs. newbie match (Frog vs. Liquid.)

It says a lot about the predictability of this contest when a 2nd round matchup is the most difficult to predict in the contest.

Also, just to put this in perspective, these are the first round matches that had a lower prediction percentage than Link being in the finals (67.67%):

Ganondorf/Alucard
Frog/Liquid Snake
Kefka/Knuckles
Vyse/Laharl
Ness/Jak
Vivi/Donkey Kong
Viewtiful Joe/Tails
Ryu Hayabusa/Jill Valentine
Sam Fisher/Gordon Freeman

That's right. More people predicted Gordon Freeman to win a match than predicted Link to lose before the finals. Yes, that is bracket dominance.

That list on post 199 makes it kinda hard to argue against a 20XXDF. Megaman, Snake, Tidus and Shadow were expected to be the top four performers in the division, and they end up taking four of the seven biggest drops in the entire bracket. Let's not forget Zero and Knuckles, who aren't far either. I think Master Chief being the only character in that division to show any raw improvement (and by not even a full point, even with his awesome performances) after adjusting Crono/Kefka SFF is pretty telling.

But, Slow, if we boost 20XX, we have to boost MC/Frog/LS. And they're pretty high already. From my adjusted stats:

14. Auron - 28.22
15. Bowser - 28.21
16. Solid Snake - 27.73
17. Alucard - 27.09
18. Master Chief - 26.96
19. Frog - 26.96
20. Liquid Snake - 26.93
21. Sora - 26.64
22. Vivi - 26.50
23. Kirby - 25.99
24. Dante - 25.17

It's hard to see that trio above Bowser and Auron. And once you get past them, you've got Gdorf, Magus, Zero, and the Noble Nine.

Yes, let's have a user-made bracket and user-made match pictures next year.

-

I'll second that.

-

I'll third it, and my zerglings will fourth, fifth, sixth...

...

...

...one hundred twenty nine thousand it.

-

I'll 129,001st it.

i am seriously behind doing this. in fact, i was going to suggest this when i posted my version of a SC2K5 bracket on Monday or Tuesday. we really should put our heads together to come up with the most interesting and most unpredictable bracket we can. then, we need to present it to CJayC, not because we think we're better than him, but as a help to him because we spend all this time analyzing these contests and coming up with tough matches. it would be awesome for all of this contest and bracket analysis to be put to some use.

seriously, what do we accomplish by a dozen different people posting what we think would make an awesome bracket? sure, we know what some great matchups and divisions would be, but we knew that last off-season and look at the massively predictable bracket we wound up with. we can try to use our "Ultimate Guru S2K5 Bracket" to hold a tournament on this board, but it's not that satisfying since the board's favorites are very different from the character's actual strength. how magnificent would it be to put our collective knowledge and analysis to great use and actually come up with a bracket that gets used next year?

and we don't even need to worry about getting any credit for presenting a Character Battle Bracket for CJayC to use; i for one just want us to come up with a bracket that can be used to bring the magic back to this contest that it had in 2K2 and even in 2K3. and together, i think we can come up with such an unpredictable bracket. the only tough part would be getting CJayC to notice it. and what would be the worst that could happen if we try this? the worst Ceej could do is not notice it or flat out tell us to shutup, but it's not like we'd get banned or anything. it doesn't hurt to try.

so, seriously, gurus, we should put our heads together over the next few weeks or months and come up with the most unpredictable, head-scratching, interesting SC2K5 bracket we can.

My ideas on how to create a user picked bracket.

Idea 1: Make a bracket tournament on this board, winner gets sent to CJayC and used for bracket next contest.

Idea 2: Compile averages of all user brackets and that is bracket used next year.

Idea 3: Users submit brackets to CJayC ala art competition, Top 10 get voted on by the useres, top vote getter is used next contest.

We'd also have to spend some time thinking like the average nominator. Remember, there will be some new blood coming in and some old blood going out. We'll have to account for the tastes of the nominators. Perhaps making a bracket with the characters that are almost certain to make it, with open holes for the new people.

Oh, and just to be on the safe side, we should make a bracket with Link + Cloud, and one without.

Actually, Kirby was ahead of Dante in 2002...

As for the 20XX, I think there are ways around it. There are plenty of other things that may have caused it: maybe Crono is still more popular than we're giving him credit for, and that he just underperformed against Mario, because, well, Mario is Mario. On top of that, Cloud might be doing better than he should against Link due to desperate Cloud vote stuffers. Why would you vote stuff for Link when he's winning fairly comfortably? Both of those, combined with a (lesser) underperformance of Mega Man could take care of all the weird stuff.

Kinda like how maybe Sephiroth didn't overperform by 5% on Link in 2002. Maybe by 2% instead, while Mario underperformed by 2%, and then Link increased from '02 to '03 by 2%. There could be a lot more variation in big matches than you might think. That also takes care of the balance of extrapolated values between '02 to '03 almost exactly the same as the WDF does. Get it?

that's why we would need several discussion regulars who can try to be unbiased (i.e. no Smurf X). even if one or two guys are biased a little, the rest can overrule him.

Oh well yeah. In the sense of getting the board that we would do it on, someone would need to IM everyone from the stat topic. But once we have that board, we would basically just have to come to mutual agreements on matches that should and shouldn't occur then set up the bracket, followed with alterations until we have avoided almost all SFF and have a difficult bracket.

Even if everybody involved was made ineligable to win a prize, it would be a huge hassle to make sure nobody here leaked the information. We can give CjayC a few pointers on making a good bracket and a few examples of such a bracket, but out right accpeting a bracket can't happen.

And I just realized that I'm going to finish 1 point behind my fanboyish joke of a spring contest bracket that I spent maybe 5 minutes filling out.

That's what not picking the winner correctly will get ya, I guess. 1 point, though? Damn.

And it makes me sad to think that Link would be doing even better if it weren't for some rigorous Cloud vote stuffing.

A lot of matches around 110,000 - 114,000. =)

You guys read my mind. I e-mailed CJayC a few days ago with an idea about allowing users to create a bracket, but they would have to forego their chance to win a prize in return.

I could care less about prizes. I put myself down as ineligible because I didn't care... and because I didn't think I had a chance.

We should really ALL e-mail him that the people from the Contest Stats and Discussion topic would like a private board to create the summer 2005 contest bracket, using past results and new nominations to decide the matches and make it unpredictable. In return, we promise not to leak any information and give up eligibility.

I think only the regulars of this topic should really be allowed since most other people will be fairly clueless.

Considering I've already won one of these things, I would have no problem giving up my eligibility in order to give us a better bracket. I'm sure others in this topic wouldn't mind, either.

Come to think of it, who else would be interested in such an idea? If you're willing to give up contest eligibility in order to take part in creating a bracket for the contest, as well as possibly other things, let me know. I would put this on Board 7, but I'd rather keep this among ourselves. I already know for a fact that Slowflake wouldn't mind. He's Canadian and can't win, anyway =)

Hmm, yeah, I rather like that bracket of the top 3.

Link will never lose before the Final Four, unless Cloud is put with him. But Vincent is unpredictable, he could easily upset Snake, or he could be a dud.

Cloud vs Crono would not be that great, but again, it is hard to make good matches with Cloud and Link, outside of them facing off.

I love the third division. Sonic vs Mario is the match everybody wants, and we get it. Mario/Sonic vs Mega Man would be great and could go either way as well. Plus, we could throw in a strong four seed to shake MM up. Maybe Ganondorf?

4th has great upset potential. Samus keeps going up, and she will certainly not slow down next year. I could very well see her taking down Seph and then the winner of the 3rd divison, and then bow out to Cloud or Link in the finale.

i do like that idea, Doma, especially if we weren't eligible for prizes. although, it'd just be nice to get an awesome bracket used. recognition, even when the bracket was posted would be nice, though. not necassary, but nice.

If you take out some fluff, Gordon could easily be a 16. Personally, I don't think either of them belong, but if we need jokes for 16 seeds, why not.

Gordon will not be 16-seed material after Half-Life 2...

I would like to see him against a lesser FF character, maybe Orlandu or Kain?

CjayC is not going to provide a privtate board for this and it would only be a matter of time before a secret board is found. If we need a message board for discussion it can't be a GameFAQs one.

btw - the only other potential problem i could see with us creating a bracket for Ceej would be if he really wanted to stick with the nomination system. however, if he really wanted to let people nominate characters, i think we could work around easily by tweaking our bracket at the last minute with the characters he would want us to put in and remove based on nominations.

Gordon got hosed by Sam's horrible performance against Samus. He might not be that great, but he's better than 16. I'd see him as a 13/14 seed, and as high as a 9 pending Half-Life 2's release. Let's face it, though - GFNW.

Even though I've never posted in these topics, I'd love to help make an ultimate bracket. I've done reasonably well in these contests (would've won a nice little gift last Spring if my overt OoT fanboyism didn't get in the way...), and have looked at these matches enough to have a few potentially good ideas. CATS and Gordon are the great traditions of the contest.

GFNW has become a bigger board joke than CATS recently. for all i care, CATS can take a hike. but Gordon can't be a 16 seed, because for GFNW to be funny, Gordon has to be involved in a match that it looks like he COULD win, but he won't - because GFNW.

Certainly not out of the question.

If he will take user created pictures for the final match of the contest, I don't see why he would refuse to make a private board for us.

Why would a private board be guaranteed to be out of the question? Not saying we need one, but I'm curious.

Considering hom many times CjayC has given out Private boards, it just doesn't seem very likely that we will get one. But on second thought if we somehow do get CjayC to approve this, getting a Private Board for it doesn't seem like too much of a stretch.
