There's really no way of knowing just how strong(er) Link is this year until the Elite 8/Final Four. This match is basically a massive SFF with Yoshi/Luigi to follow next round and then even Mario in the Elite 8. So unless Crono beats Mario, you won't know on whether or not to fear Link until he meets Mega Man.

But by that match, his time in the contest is up. ;)

Without SFF, I can see Samus doin' it too. Lara Croft did not drop that much. Cloud would have been expected to get about 22% on her last year, then Samus does almost 5% better yesterday...that's not just Lara dropping, rest assured of that.

I'm not even confident Mega Man would beat Samus anymore, but I'm gonna wait until later on in the contest before I say anything for sure.

I doubt that crono could get 45% (not in the least cause, srry HM, I have doubts about megamans ability to get that high). MM is the only one outside of the big three with half a chance to get that high on link. but the only thing that really annoys me about todays match is that alucard's screwed in Xs next year (he'd be projected to get like 5% on link O_o).

He can, but he won't. For Mega Man to stand a chance of winning this tournament, he MUST get 65% or better on Tidus. Link has already shown that he's as strong as ever, so anything less than that will not do.

And if Heroic Mario disagrees, I'll just say that Tidus would have had to have increased in proportion to Shadow due to Final Fantasy X-2 by a large amount, something I know he does not believe.

Well, I have him winning. But I do think yoshi is a slight favorite.

IIRC, Yoshi outranks luigi, by about 3% or so. But since last year, luigi has a new game, mario and luigi: The superstar saga, so I think he might be able to make that up. We'll see in a few hours here.

I have confidence in Luigi. Kind of. Okay, it's shaky, but I just feel uncomfortable siding with Yoshi for this match, where as I don't get that uneasy feeling with picking Luigi.

Link's performance today is awesome. In the non-SFF adjusted rankings, CATS could be above Ganondorf. XD

And I'm very happy to see Samus, one of my favorite characters doing so well. I would not mind it at all if she beat Cloud/Seph. :)

The SFF should not be very extreme in Yoshi-Luigi. They're relatively close in strength, meaning there should not be a very large disparity in who the fanbase favors. I could see Yoshi winning with as much as 60% and Luigi with as much as 55.

Yeah. Link versus Cloud is looking to be very interesting. For one thing, Samus looks like she may be able to challenge Cloud this year. She would need a little luck, of course, but that match doesn't really look like a gimme anymore.

My theory: If we see what I call "Reggie-lution Link" for the rest of this contest, rather than Celda or another incarnation, he may very well kick everyone's asses and take their names.

I just read Ulti's Crono analysis in the Prophet topic. I think I'm going to make it a point to make fun of him during that match, since I'm a big Crono fan, and since we haven't been getting along lately. :D

As for Cloud/Sephiroth, I'm pulling for Sephiroth to win, as I'm not at all a fan of Cloud. The pic will invariably favor Sephiroth, if the pic makes a difference. I mean come on, it's Sephiroth. The entire reason he's famous is because of how cool he looked in FF7.

Match XXII: (2) Samus vs. (15) Lara Review

Samus beat Lara, 82.39% - 17.61%

Wow, just wow. Not only did Samus do better then we thought she would. She downright destroys Lara. If this was just all Samus going up we may have a new champion (That would rock). Lara must’ve dropped a lot, but Samus could also have gone up with a few new games under her belt. Also I think that Samus is now the heavy favorite of winning this division with this performance.

Past Performances:

Yoshi: 2002

Did not attend
Ranked: N/A

Yoshi: 2003

Defeated Conker, 66.46% - 33.54%
Lost to Bowser, 43.66% - 56.34%
Ranked: 23rd

Yoshi: 2004

Defeated Ryo, 76.40% - 23.60%

Luigi: 2002

Did not attend
Ranked: N/A

Luigi: 2003

Defeated Ratchet, 74.54% - 25.46%
Lost to Squall, 39.79% - 60.21%
Ranked: 30th

Luigi: 2004

Defeated Pac-Man, 67.73% - 32.27%

Analysis:

Well nothing interesting happened on Yoshi vs. Ryo. Yoshi who’s ranked near Dante did about the same performance to Ryo that Dante did so it looks like Yoshi has maintained his strength. But on the other hand Luigi’s match with Pac-Man wasn’t even suppose to break 60%, but he ended up doubling him showing that the Crono vs. Kefka SFF factor never happened, but in the Knuckles vs. Kefka match it showed that there was SFF and then some. Unless Mario & Luigi helped him a lot something must be wrong. Now from last round it looks like he’s ranked 10th which is weird because that’s where some people thought he was ranked, but I thought he was closer to Knuckles at that time.

This match was thought to be Yoshi winning yet having a hard time beating Luigi. But with last round and the Knuckles/Kefka match things have turned for Luigi. This match could go either way, but many of us would agree that whoever wins this match will be the third strongest Mario character, unless Luigi breaks 57% on Yoshi. This match is still talked about on the stats topic even though this match will be up soon, yet none of us have come with an agreement on who’s the favorite. It’s anybody’s game.

Let’s put the stats away and have the almighty question, which do gamers like better Yoshi or Luigi. Even though there isn’t really an answer it’s probably going to be the one thing that will decide this match. Since both characters are from the same series I think it’s up to Mario fans and the casual on who they like more and if you ask me it will probably be the factor of the winner of the match. So I guess this match will be one of those close SFF matches.

Charmander’s Bracket: Yoshi

Charmander’s Prediction: Yoshi wins, 52.12%

Maybe...I don't know, I'm getting the feeling it will be 55/45 one way or the other. Yoshi might jump out to an early lead and drop the ball, or he might hold it. Either way, I see Yoshi jumping up.

That's what I expect. The closest thing that comes to mind (for some reason) is EB vs Doom, where EB had the lead for a very short amount of time, but enough to scare some people, then lost it in the first 15 minute update and never got back since.

Luigi will win because I have Yoshi winning.

That's what always happens to me on "close" matches.

Well, except for Ryu Vs. Jill. But one more minute and Jill probably would have won. So... my bad luck streak could still be in progress.

I based my pick of Yoshi only on personal experiences where I've seen many more people like Yoshi than Luigi. Maybe it's flawed but as I made my pick I never saw a reason otherwise.

And this match needs to get started so I can log off and go play more CT.

hooray for Yoshi!!

i feel great because i cast the vote that put Yoshi in the lead:

Yoshi 50.56% 45
Luigi 49.44% 44
TOTAL VOTES 89

yay!! i'm guessing Luigi will push it to within 55%, but for now i can go back to sleep.

btw - if Luigi doesn't come back much, then Pac-Man looks REALLY pathetic.

oh, and i can't believe that one of the perfects actually picked Ganondorf over Link. i'm guessing that we will lose half of our remaining perfects on today's match.

Ryu/Jill was more like, tight like a pair of spandex on the 575 lb. forty year-old who thinks she's still in the 80's and no one is mean enough to point out she is too fat or she might just kill herself because she is that disgusting and overweight.

All you had to do was some simple statistic deduction. Ulti showed it in his analysis. Squall and Bowser are relatively equal. Yoshi did better in his match than Luigi did despite being SFF'd.

Yeah, I figured Yoshi would probably win, but I couldn't pick against Luigi when he at least stood a slim chance of winning.

Yes, but most people don't look at the stats as much as we do. Even the ones near the top of the list don't put as much thought in their brackets as we do. To get an idea at what the prediction % might be, we shouldn't look past the basics: these are two Nintendo characters with nearly identical seeds that both lost in the second round last year. It shouldn't be too high in anyone's favor.

A consensus pick? Definitely not. You have Luigi, Mario's brother, and you have Yoshi, Mario's little riding pal. There is enough fans of each and both being well-known enough to make this more of a 50-50 deal than anything. These people don't look at stats and even the board members weren't exactly massively favoring Yoshi.

I doubt Yoshi will have more than 55% of the brackets in his favor.

Yep folks, I am BACK! More irreverent than ever...prepared to bash all that the elites, newbies, and casuals hold dear, all in the name of mockery and self glorification, while wishing all along for nothing more than leaderboard adulation and reverence for the hallowed name of Steve Illumina...

So without further adieu...I shall speak!

Round XXXV: Crono vs Magus

Bracket: Crono
Preference: Magus!
Guest Elite Pick of the Day: CHICHIRIMUYO
Chich's Pick: Crono
Oracle %: 64.06 in favor of Crono
Prophet: 16752 votes...
Would Rather Pick: FROG!
Brackets Above Me to Fall: 762 (Was 775 yesterday!)

Comments:
The overrated pride of old school Squaresoft takes on last year's upstart tourney upset king.

This grudge match of 16 bit RPG icons is SO not a grudge match...it is a joke. It is over before it begins, like all same game hero-villain matchups. Ceej, could you not see how predictable this all is? The kiddies may love you for it...even sending you envelope art and tribute letters on blogs nobody reads...but us real gamers...we want something with more substance. Something to really evoke the passions of the elites and casuals, the fanboys and nerdboys...and that is something like...

MERLE vs LUCCA

Yep, now that is a match that will draw not only votes, but also raise the boiling blood of the fanboys to new levels. Arguments about who has the greater role in Antipode magic would engulf the board prior to this heated inter-Chrono matchup.

Think about it...a bracket with 64 entirely new entrants. No more of the same tired matchups with guys like Crono and Knuckles...nor the same lame fodder like Ryo and Gordon. Get 64 lesser known supporting RPG characters, fighting game guys and gals, 2nd tier action stars, and even old retro stuff that dont start with "Pac". The contest would be revived, interest would shoot up, and elites like myself would not get semi-bored writing over and over about generic Crono, girlie man Cloud, and the like.

I would so love writing about guys like Vincent, Quistis, Raiden, Zangief, Maximo, Rayne, Dr. Wily, Ghaleon, Geno, Centipede, B.J. Blastiwicz, Turok, Abobo, Sigma, Bubble Man, Chun Li, Kitana and Bayou Billy!

Ah, now thats a contest. And even if you fanboys wont admit it publically...deep down, you know I am right...

Moving right along now...to the Analysis!

Results: Ho-hum....boring! The match pictures are more exciting than the matches here! Crono over Magus easily, as Rule #2.4: The Rule of Heroes over Villains, takes effect again. Look for a 65-35 split, cause Magus is well liked enough to draw votes...

Quotes: "Being a mute is the way to be!" -Crono, "Good luck Frog...make Cyrus proud!" -Magus

Noooo, Yoshi sucks!!! I don't wanna lose another point, I must get $400!!! ;_;

Geeze Tai, we told you from Day 1, Yoshi would have this. But noooo, you don't want us to try and help you. You don't want the board to cost you 2 points...

I had no doubts Yoshi was coming out of this ahead, though I am thinking Luigi will pull him down a little.

Hey now, stop with all the Yoshi diss.

All the signs were pointing to Yoshi in this match. The stats, the board games. The only thing Luigi had going for him was that he was Mario's brother. But Squall showed us that being Mario's brother means nothing except a walk out of Round 1.

And Ryu will defeat Sora.

Well, my upset special pick has failed. When I originally made the pick, I was hoping for SFF to go Luigi's way, then when the Circle of Death revealed itself, I was hoping he was the statistical favorite. Either way, I'm still happy I backed the little green guy, but I have a feeling that there are people with my exact same bracket except for this match...

I don't expect a lot of SFF in Link-Yoshi. I think the dino can pull 25% against Link.

And when I was talking about Yoshi being a nearly consensus pick, I was talking about the perfects. In the overall picture, it'll probably be evenly split. I can see 3-4 perfects losing today.

Before I even catch up in this topic, I just finished hte last, and I want to comment on the idiocy I saw in the last posts of 48.

Raiden not being able to hold his own against a non-metal gear character? Are you people stoned? MGS2 ranked higher than MGS1, and with what Link has done to Ganon I think we should all be willing to admit that Raiden may be a solid mid-carder.

He does deserve to comeback, and I'd be willing to bet almost anything that if he does and doesn't face Snake then he will shock most people.

I've never played MGS2, and only saw MGS1 being played for an hour or so, maybe more. Not my type of game, but I do have to stick up for Raiden because he has a great deal of potential and casting him aside without ever giving him a fair chance is stupid. I'll let ceej get away with those actions so he can mix up the bracket some, but you should all know better by now than to disregard a character whose full potential we've never seen.

Then again, if you say Raiden shouldn't come back I expect that you had either chosen Ness to lose or you were going to but were convinced otherwise (by me, of course).

Next year Cjay should put Link Sephy and Cloud all on the same side of the bracket, so only one can come out to the finals. That would make things the hardest to predict IMO. That way all the new matches with Mario, Crono, Samus, Snake, and whoever can be explored on the other side.

Neither of them really make any sense except that Penny Arcade made a comic in 2002 during one of Pac-Man's matches, but I don't remember it or the news post saying anything like "Vote for Pac-Man." It was just telling people about the contest.

You named characters that could break 40% on him, as opposed to a path with characters who will struggle to get 20. There's a big difference between being a lock for the Final Four and having a ridiculously easy way there.

There'd be a difference there. You've got three people he's never faced before and could easily break over 40% on him and you know how I feel on Mega Man. But it's people getting 40%+ on him as opposed to wondering if they can break 20%.

"1) Link will beat Crono convincingly regardless."

What's your deffinition of convincing? If you mean that Link will win 45-55 than yeah, he could win decissively... but considering the stats, for Link/Crono that's not the numbers most are expecting. It'll prove to be a moral victory, if not a real one, for Crono AND Mario when Crono faces Link.

Both she and Link have ridiculously easy paths to the Elite Eight.

I wouldn't say Link has an easy path to the Elite 8. I mean, for a character like Link? Yeah, but Ganondorf and Yoshi aren't exactly weak characters. Link is just going to SFF his way to Round 4, and that's what makes his path so easy.

Now Lara, Sam and Ryu? Yeah, that is ridiculosly easy.

I think HM and Leonhart are arguing on behalf of the other characters, not Link. We all know Link will blast his way into the Elite 8 regardless of the draw, but seeing what happened to Ganondorf, a possible top 10 character, was just sad.

Duke > CATS
Vyse < Ganondorf
Squall > Yoshi
Sephiroth > Mario

Er, what were you saying?

Duke > CATS
Vyse < Yoshi
Squall < Ganondorf

Meh, I was thinking about it that way. Seph/Mario is irrelevant since I said elite eight, not final four.

A case could be made for Seph as well, sure. Fodder and two SFF matches, like Link.

Let's talk more about SFF. I'll display every match that both characters/games are from the same company. Do you believe that there is possible SFF in these matches?

2002:

Match 15: Knuckles vs. Akira (Sega): Nope.
Match 24: Link vs. Little Mac (Nintendo): Probably not.
Match 49: Mario vs. Donkey Kong (Nintendo): Yeah, there's gotta be SFF on that match.
Match 63: Mario vs. Link (Nintendo): I think there is, but I'ts probably small.

2003:

Match 02: Pikachu vs. Fox (Nintendo): I believe so. Wasn't Pikachu ranked 60th in the extrapolated rankings? As much as I hate him, I can't imagine him being THAT weak.
Match 08: Samus vs. Isaac (Nintendo): I don't think so.
Match 11: Bowser vs. Ness (Nintendo): I believe that there was probably SFF in this match.
Match 13: Sora vs. Aeris (Square): Probably.
Match 17: Mario vs. Olimar (Nintendo): Forget it.
Match 25: Snake vs. Raiden (Konami): Maybe. Maybe not.
Match 33: Link vs. Fox (Nintendo): If there was SFF in Bowser vs. Ness, why not for this match? Pikachu could have been double SFF'd, and that could have been the reason why Pikachu was ranked so low.
Match 38: Bowser vs. Yoshi (Nintendo): I believe so, and it was probably in Bowser's favor.
Match 42: Kefka vs. Crono (Square): Looking by the past matches and today's match, nope.
Match 46: Ryu vs. Dante (Capcom): I doubt it.
Match 57: Link vs. Samus (Nintendo): Wasn't this theory disproved?
Match 63: Cloud vs. Sephiroth (Square): This match probably had little to no SFF.

Spring 2004:

Match 05: Donkey Kong vs. Duck Hunt (Nintendo): I don't know... but if there wasn't, could Duck Hunt have won if there was?
Match 09: Chrono Trigger vs. Secret of Mana (Square): SFF? Or no SFF? I really don't know.
Match 11: Sonic 2 vs. Shining Force (Sega): No, no SFF here.
Match 33: Mario 3 vs. Metroid (Nintendo): I do believe that there was SFF here. But, by how much?
Match 35: Donkey Kong vs. Zelda I (Nintendo): Look above
Match 37: Chrono Trigger vs. Mario RPG (Square): Here's a tough one. I believe that Mario RPG has lost many Square votes on that match.
Match 39: Zelda: LttP vs. Super Metroid (Nintendo): There was definitely SFF here, and by a lot.
Match 41: FF7 vs. Xenogears (Square): Nah.
Match 44: Zelda: OoT vs. Mario 64 (Nintendo): Please look at LttP vs. SM
Match 46: Zelda: WW vs. Metroid Prime (Nintendo): Probably, but probably not enough for MP to defeat WW if there wasn't any SFF, but enough for MP to defeat Soul Calibur & Kingdom Hearts.
Match 47: FFT Advance vs. FFX (Square): Did we underestimate FFTA?
Match 57: Mario 3 vs. Zelda I (Nintendo): Sure. And it was surely in Mario 3's favor.
Match 63: Chrono Trigger vs. FF7: I guess not...

Summer 2004:

Match 12: Zero vs. Protoman (Capcom): I believe so. I can't imagine Protoman being that weak.
Match 33: Link vs. Ganondorf (Nintendo): Beyond a doubt, yes.
Match 34: Luigi vs. Yoshi (Nintendo): Yeah, but it's in Yoshi's favor.

So, what do you think?

Here's who I think has the Easiest to Hardest Paths to the Elite 8 (out of the Noble Nine)

Samus: Diffuculty, 2/10 - Lara and Sam are nothing, and Ryu is a step above fodder.

Cloud: Diffuculty, 3/10 - Duke is weak, Vyse could be weaker, and Squall will get his ass SFF'd

Link: Diffuculty, 3/10 - CATS, SFF with Ganondorf and Yoshi. Too easy.

Sephiroth: Diffuculty, 3/10 - Sly was nothing. SFF with Vivi and Auron.

Snake: Diffuculty, 5/10 - TANNER! And then Knuckles, and then MC/Frog. Not too easy, yet not that hard for Snake.

Mario: Diffuculty, 6/10 - JC is no problem. SFF with Bowser, but Crono will be a pain.

Sonic: Diffuculty, 7/10 - Terry might be no problem, but Ryu is. Then after that, he has Dante. Not too much fun.

Mega Man: Diffuculty, 7/10 - Jim was a push-over. Tidus on the other hand, is not. The FFX star is about as strong as Magus. Then he has to move onto Zero, which would be tough if there was no SFF.

Crono: Diffuculty, 9/10 - Conker shows no problem, but then you've got Magus, where SFF could occur, then Mario. Freakin' Mario.

For the record, we know most of the big characters are going to have an easy time making it to the Elite 8. It's just when the majority of your matches too the Elite 8 consist of nothing but SFF in your favor it doesn't even get you a "semi-tough" route.

I was just thinking about who could be our hardest hit loser this year.

If Cloud or Seph wins...

Cloud/Seph -> Link -> Mega Man -> Snake -> Frog -> MC -> Crash

Mega upsets Link?

Cloud/Seph -> Mega Man -> Link -> Crono/Mario -> Mario/Crono -> Bowser/Magus -> Guybrush/Luca

If Link or Mega wins...

Link/Mega -> Cloud -> Samus -> Sonic -> Dante -> Tails -> Joe

Samus upsets Cloud?

Link/Mega -> Samus -> Cloud/Seph -> Seph/Cloud -> Auron/Squall -> Ness/Kirby -> Jak/Kain

I tend to think of the GBA as a place for the "cuter" characters. Look at Pokemon, Mario games, Kirby games, Fire Emblem, FFTA, and to a lesser extent Metriod. They are all cute, as is Isaac. Felix is not.

What? If both of their round 1 pictures were used against each other Felix would definitely have the picture advantage.

I still disagree.

...they all look the same as they have before.

But they're so much cuter . . . *hugs GBA characters*

I don't see why it wouldn't be. Now, I'm not saying it should match the 61% he'd be projected to get against Isaac but it shouldn't turn into a 55-45 match.

I would see a 55-45 match. I'd expect something like this match we have today. One is the obvious pick, the other is the upset pick, and the favorite wins with 55%.

I didn't even know Golden Sun was made by Nintendo until this contest. I don't think there could be any Samus/Isaac SFF. The only possible way would be GBA owners who didn't know who Samus was before and own or have played Metroid Fusion and Golden Sun. But I doubt that would make much of a difference....

If Isaac were to go against Master Chief last year, I bet he would have close to the same results as Felix did. Yes, the extrapolated doesn't agree with that, but screw the extrapolated. I still like Isaac way more than Felix. Felix in the first game is all confused and whiny. If anything, he angered me more by acting like a moron in certain parts of the game. I know Isaac isn't much better in TLA since they turned him into the cliched typical hero/party leader; but he does a way better job leading the party than Felix.

And with the artwork on how Felix looks "cooler". I still don't see how Camelot made Felix look way older than he actually is. And that is the sole reason why he looks more "bad ass". He looks like he's around his twenties in most of his artwork. If you look at the artwork at the end of the game, you see him look like a normal 15 year old or whatever age they are. So much for bad ass look there.

Well, looks like Pac-Man either took a drop between 2002 and 2003 or he took a drop between 2003 and 2004.

It's most likely a drop from 03-04. Pac-Man did almost tie with Kefka last year, so unless you want to think Kefka increased also...

Wow, and 96% of the brackets had Link goreaching R3? Over twice as many brackets had Lara Croft beating Samus! o_O

There's no way to conclusively prove it, but I couldn't imagine Golden Sun having enough of a following to propel Felix over Yuna.

What about Kefka? Yuna isn't much more popular than Kefka is.

From: Kaxon | Posted: 9/4/2004 5:52:30 PM | Message Detail
Let's talk more about SFF.

Match 42: Kefka vs. Crono (Square): Looking by the past matches and today's match, nope.

I thought the consensus said that Kefka's performance this year showed that there was SFF.

Match 09: Chrono Trigger vs. Secret of Mana (Square): SFF? Or no SFF? I really don't know.
Match 41: FF7 vs. Xenogears (Square): Nah.

I am about 99% certain that both of these matches featured SFF. Especially the first one... I have a real hard time seeing Secret of Mana being weaker than Earthbound or Shenmue. I also see Xenogears as not being that much weaker than FF Tactics. I'm not sure about that one though - the extrapolated rankings from the spring seem problematic to me.

Aeris was already popular before Kingdom Hearts. The SFF in that matchup would be minimal at best. Sora's fault is that he is in a game where there are TOO many popular characters (from both Square AND Disney) that draw the spotlight from himself. He isn't to Kingdom Hearts what Crono is to Chrono Trigger, where even though there are lots of popular characters, Crono still serves as the popular face of the game. I guess you COULD call it SFF, but I don't think so.

We never said Sora didn't suffer SFF. We just said it wasn't very much, just like in Link-Mario.

Sora will win, he has too many advantages over Ryu.

Name them, and none of them had better be the supposed "advantages" Kingdom Hearts had going into the Spring Contest.

I've said it from the beginning: Master Chief over Frog was the smartest round 2 upset pick to take. There was a high possibility of Frog being overrated, and MC is underrated anyhow.

Master Cheif over Frog is much more likely to occur than Sora over Ryu, imo, Master Chief over Frog isn't even much of a stretch, if at all, frog already was overrated, no matter how you look at it, and the only way he'll prove otherwise is with a STRONG showing against Master Chief. Frog reminds of KH, and he could follow the same path. Way too high expectations, wins the first round, does well in the second, but still fails to meet expectations, the only difference being, that I don't think Frog is going to rank as high as Kh did.

Sora over Jill is in my bracket, and I will be more surprised to see Sora win than Master Chief. He can do it, and sff isn't the only way. Jill could have declined some, did she have any new games this year to stop it? We can't know for sure since ryu's untested, but sora winning is at least possible.

I'm fairly certain Bass would approach a finals position. At the very least, final four.

I think you're way overrating Bass. I'm a Mega Man fan, and I barely know who he is. There are plenty of people in our hypothetical tournament that I'd vote for over Bass. Toad could probably beat him. I'm sure Tifa or Vincent would have no trouble with him. (Imagine if we booted all the characters who have been in the contest before and we still got an all FF VII final... that would be kind of funny.)

After looking at Doma's bracket I'm less enthusiastic about the idea - I've never even heard of half those people.

Division semifinals:

Vincent Valentine over Mai Shiranui

Hyrule Division: Round 1 - Match 35 – (6)Magus vs. (3)Crono

Moltar’s Analysis

Magus - His skin is BLUE!!!!!!!!!!!!

Round 1 – vs. Luca (Magus: 81.04% - Luca: 18.96%)

Monster numbers by Magus in this match. He has so much potential in these Contests, but he is again stuck in a bad place.

Crono - What’s a Contest without a red-headed bastard step-child for Ceej to torture? A not good one.

Round 1 – vs. Crono (Crono: 77.99% - Conker: 22.01%)

Crono also puts up big numbers in his match against Conker. Poor squirrel…

What a match we have here. More SFF right here folks! Magus takes on Crono in what is bound to be an interesting match-up.

Wow…talk about unlucky. In 2002, Magus wasn’t even here, but after Crono won his division and was just inches away from going to the finals, Magus was instantly considered a snub. In 2003, Magus made his appearance….as a 13 seed! Big ouch! He turned many heads after he upset Sam Fisher in 2002, and then there was Ganondorf, who had just upset Tidus last round. After a great match, Magus squeaked by Ganon, and went on to face Ganon’s nemesis, Link. There was no way Link would beat Magus, but Magus did manage to put up 35% on Link. The only other characters to get 35% or over on Link are Sephiroth, Mario, Samus and Cloud. Those names sound familiar? They should, because they are all Contest elites. Thanks to Magus’s performance last year, he was instantly thrown up there, between Snake and Sonic. We already know Crono’s story pretty well, so let’s just cut to the end. ^_~

Crono should win this match, but I expect Magus to put up a fight. Hopefully he won’t get SFF’d too badly. Also, don’t be surprised if this match starts out pretty close. Magus is a board favorite, and has a great chance of taking the early lead. Crono should be able to win this fairly easily though. Magus just got thrown in one of the worst spots ever. For one, he’s underseeded, by about 2 or 3 seeds. Even if he was a 6-seed in another division, I’d have no problem putting him over Chief, Auron or Ryu, and he’d give Snake and Samus a run for their money. Better luck next year Maggie.

Oh, and just a little fun fact, which is more of an opinion, but meh. Crono/Magus has the hardest path to the Championship this year. First they take on each other then Mario, Link, Mega Man, then Cloud or Seph in the finals. Ouch…

Moltar’s Bracket Says:Crono will win.

Moltar’s Prediction is: Magus 43% - Crono 57%

Ulti's Analysis

Before commenting on this match, let it be known that despite any and all brackets, I am rooting for Magus to win this one the whole damned way. I refuse to honestly believe that among fans of Chrono Trigger that Crono could ever be more popular than Magus in the first place, and how Crono is vaulted to such stardom is beyond me.

That said, Crono should have a lockdown on this match, both in favoritism and recognition, but be forewarned that any and all people caught saying that Crono is a better character than Magus in my presence is suffering a terrible death right on the spot. If it were solely up to me, Magus would be in the finals of this contest. But on an unbiased level, Crono (unfortunately) is the huge favorite in this match. As nice as it would be for Magus to win, the name of the game is Chrono Trigger. Crono (sadly) wins by default.

Ulti's Bracket/Prediction - Crono/Crono with 52.99%

Cena’s Analysis

Yet another of Ceej's "fantasy matches" that makes us cringe. Magus could have done better than zippos at Guns N' Roses concerts, for God's sake. But of course, this tournament is only for the sick, twisted pleasure of the man who laughs at us all daily. Now, onto the analysis. I've playd through Chrono Trigger three or four times and I've failed to realize how the Super Saiyan and the purple haired, gigantic schnozed, black magic using weird-ass are bad ass. Sure, Crono has his character development eventually, but Magus? He's just another mage who has uber attacks. That makes him cool? ...k

Either way, it doesn't matter how cool they are, because one of them is going to win anyhow. And that winner is Crono, without a doubt. He's the main character, and hell, most people probably didn't even recruit Magus. Crono has this one in the bag, ladies and gentleman. Sorry, Magus fans, you don't prevail this year. Good luck trying, though.

Link and Ganon were so incredibly far apart that I'm compelled to use the SFF in the rest of these matches.

Cena’s Vote: Crono

Cena’s Prediction: Crono with 76% (Magus > Ganondorf stat wise, so maybe Magus can pull 20%)

Bass? Final Four material? If he got lucky he could.

I don't believe he'd need to get lucky in order to get that far. He should, by all means, be stronger than Protoman. Unlike Proto, Bass has actually been playable. He doesn't just pop in from time to time and then leave, but instead has had a recent GBA port from the SNES (Rockman & Forte). He's also got plenty of fans out there, so I would expect him to do well not only in that contest, but in this contest we have now.

I highly doubt he'd beat Vincent/Tifa/Cid/Peach/Rikku/Geno, and he probably wouldn't be able to beat Sub-Zero or Chun-Li either.

Rikku? Geno? I think he could beat both of those. I'd be a little uneasy on the three Final Fantasy 7 characters however.

I would not expect Bass to be much stronger than Protoman. I think a good majority of Mega Man's fanbase here is from the X series, as it's more recent and the better games from the original are on the NES which many haven't played. Zero's thrashing of Protoman seems to serve that point.

Of course, I know this is going to fall deaf on Heroic Mario's ears because I know what he thinks MMAC can do.

I would not expect Bass to be much stronger than Protoman.

I'm not one to estimate SFF or anything, but like I said in the other topic if he suffered even a smaller amount of SFF he could end up breaking the top 32 (Protoman). Then again, that's based purely over Zero vs. Protoman and not the incoming SFF of Mega Man vs. Zero. I don't think either one of them are fodder.

I think a good majority of Mega Man's fanbase here is from the X series,

I could see that. Basically all of Mega Man's classic series was on the NES and considering that's what? The third place where people of GameFAQs started gaming (N64/PS, SNES, NES). Thankfully, they've had a new chance to play the classic series.

as it's more recent and the better games from the original are on the NES which many haven't played. Zero's thrashing of Protoman seems to serve that point.

I do believe Zero vs. Protoman had a bit of SFF in it. Not anything massive, but enough to take Protoman from fodder to some who could win a round or so.

Bass beating Rikku? I'm not sure that would happen on *any* gaming web site*, especially one as RPG-oriented as this one.

But considering we've seen neither of the two in action, I'll end my complaint here.

I'm really getting worried about my pick of Magus over Crono. Other than that I have a pretty cookie-cutter bracket from here on out, and I'm kicking myself for choosing Magus.

The game's not called Magic Trigger.

Yuna is probably stronger now than her 2003 ranking indicates, and I'm not sure where Rikku would fall. I still wouldn't expect Bass to be all that strong though. Neither would win by very much.

Now that I think about it...Do you think we might get anime Crono and Magus from the PSX re-release for their pics? CJayC seems to be mixing up the variety of pictures he normally uses.

The only one I could recall is the intro where it zooms in on him with his scythe.

Look at the pictures MMX has on the front page of his site. Those would be most likely, though there's an image of Magus a few moments after that with a sinister grin.

Have Link/Cloud, Cloud/Seph, Mega Man/Tidus all been beaten to death to this extent? We're talking about a rejects tourney and a clear SFF match...

The first two matches are consensual "your guess is as good as mine" matches, and MM/Tidus has been beaten to death, thanks to HM and Leonhart.

I beg to differ on the "clear SFF" part. Yoshi and Luigi are expected to be as close together as Crono and Magus, and there's the possibility of Crono having a case of "fanbase leeching", and even if it's minor, it could give Magus the win. I sincerely believe Magus has a shot.

I can't possibly imagine much whining tomorrow if Magus wins. I mean, what would it look like?

"[I don't know what game Magus comes from, but] Chrono Trigger is the best game ever made and Crono deserves to win for that!"

I wouldn't put it past GameFAQs members, you know.

Think of the bracket destruction if Magus beats Crono. Magus over Crono could be a bigger upset than Starcraft's reaching Round 3.
