I'm putting aside the entire past poll results for the Luigi/Yoshi match.

It's SFF and that can go ANYWAY.
Luigi is a frickin' MARIO BROTHER.
If you gave me this decision 100000 times, I'd take Luigi over some cute lil' packmule EVERY TIME.

MMX,

Based on my pre-poll (topic=15985815), the results are a pretty even split. Yoshi is leading, 28-26; however, there were times when Luigi led.

It will be no blowout, so no need to worry, yet.

From: NegFactor | Posted: 8/30/2004 8:52:57 PM | Message Detail
I'm not going with the judgements of anyone who has a perfect at this point. A fair number of these matches have been huge perfect-killers and it was pretty much luck on picking correctly, unlike what some might say who think that Frog easily had Liquid Snake all along (just like I thought before that really tight finish)...

I definitely expected Ryu H. to pull at least 53/47 on Jill, but it's clear that this is a tighter fight than ever, and I'm willing to bet practically nobody has Jill/Ryu over Sora in the second round.

I think Yoshi will take Luigi. Know why? Because I picked Luigi to win, then mysteriously found Yoshi in my bracket list. Clearly it's because my subconscious was trying to fix a mistake on my part.

Of course, you all have to be stumped and amazed by the Gordon Freeman win first. :P

Not really. If prior polls have been an indication, once we restart the person who was winning when the poll closed was the one who won after it was restarted. I still think Hayabusa should win by a greater margin than before.

Congrats Leonhart on 501. Those pwn.

I'd imagine it'd be easier for many people to intake his increase to the point of being able to take on Link if he only had to go around 8% (42% to 50%).

Probably, but remember a lot of people believe the hype from the new Zelda game will help Link more then we do.

Well, people in here for example or people on the board. Just those that believe it is physcially impossible for Mega Man to increase from his 2003 numbers to Link, Cloud, and Sephiroth's level. Either way, it'll happen regardless of how much is necessary. We'll see this first hand at Mega Man vs. Tidus. ;)

Saying that Tidus benefitted to even a small extent is a lot more reasonable than saying Mega Man got a KH-like boost from one game because it doesn't expand his fanbase like the former did. Say what you want, but the majority of people who bought MMAC were already fans of the series, even if only the X series.

Yes, which gives me a lot more wiggle room. I could say that Mega Man will barely benefit at all, so Tidus wouldn't need much of an increase to do better.

Other than the fact that the sales of FFX-2 and MMAC don't even really compare, and it's hard for an established character to increase or decrease to a large extent without a game that makes everyone change the way they perceive the series.

It's taken half an hour to catch up, compared to 10 minutes yesterday. I think Ryu's will win this should things continue as they were.

Anyways, an analysis of Sora/Aeris: I believe that there was SFF involved in the match, but not in the way most people might think. I think that, if anyone, Aeris was SFF'd by Sora.

Crazy? Think about this: The KHF is prevelant, mainly due to appearances in the game. It broadens a person's eyes and brings about a new generation of people who would be exposed to certain characters. Aeris' exposure to the KHF would also broaden her sphere of influence. The thing is: against Sora, the KHF would be nul, as Sora would pick up that vote anyways. Thus, SFF against Aeris, although it does not mean much to her already substantial fanbase. It does, however, change Sora's position in the extrapolateds, making him more powerful then he would seem to be. At the very worst, there would be no SFF as the potential groups would cancel each other out.

From: FastFalcon05 | Posted: 8/31/2004 3:40:55 AM | Message Detail
Having played Kingdom Hearts, and not FF7, I would still vote for Aeris. Sora really isn't all that great, and his strength seems to be far, far away from that of his game. He's pretty annoying as things go, I would have liked Riku or Ansem in this year, but, it didnt' happen

Go vote in today's survivor please!!!

RE: Update Script

OK, because of this do-over match, I've had to spend the last three and a half hours completely overhauling my update script.

We lost about an hours worth of updates because I had to take the script off-line while I messed with it, but I doubt anyone will care.

The "Time" column now displays the full time and date combined. Note that the date is the date of the update, not of the match. Often, the very last update for a match won't be gotten until days later, because it doesn't record until someone manually visits the update page using ?pollid=____.

Note that there is a new default sort order: the updates will now be sorted in descending chronological order--that is, the latest update will now be on top.

If people prefer the old way (the oldest update on top), please let me know and I can very easily change it.

well, i haven't been able to add my input much lately, cause i've been ridiculously busy off-line. but from what i can tell, this poll glitch may have given false hope to Hayabusa fans and brackets. although, i would fully expect an X-box character to do better during America's daytime, which i'm told he did yesterday.

actually, does anyone remember what was Jill's biggest lead, what time was it when Hayabusa started his comeback yesterday? and what was his lead when the poll was stopped yesterday? it will be interesting to see if today closely follows the same voting trends as yesterday.

He re-does the poll... and Jill wins. Fine by me. If Hayabusa was to win just because of a glitch, I wouldn't have wanted these three points anyway.

What's that I hear about a CATS picture anyway?

Well, Jill's lead today is bigger than it was yesterday, but it's still about the same percentages. Hayabusa will still pull this one out. However, I still expect the vote totals to be low. There may be some people who didn't realize that the poll restarted and won't vote again.

I expect this match to play out exactly how it did yesterday. Jill takes it during the night, Jill takes it in the early morning, Hayabusa comes back during the day, and then builds upon his lead into the night. *yawn*

In fact, she peaked around 712 and is now sitting at 690. I'm confident in Ryu pulling this out.

Ryu will definitely cut into the lead; that is not a question. The question is whether or not he can catch up. He made up almost 1300 votes yesterday in this 12 hour period, so I have no reason to doubt that a similar gain can be expected. The question is how will the last 4-5 hours of the poll go? Damned if I know, but we should still be in for a great match.

If Ryu H. was going to win at least let it be legit. If the only way he can win is by a glitch then so be it.

Also I think yesterdays and todays match proves that the bracket voters favor Ryu H. more then Jill since it's bracket voters who actually come to this site to vote

ps Lead is at 840

haha, there was a cry from both jill and ryu fans throughout the entire day to rerun this poll. Even Ulti had a topic about it. sure a majority of ryu fans will be upset about it, but seriously, cjay was just trying to have a legit poll run, just to make sure the outcome was fair. any whining you do now is just because you're upset that ryu is losing. sure it sucks that things are a day later now, but you have to admit that there would've been justified complaints for the next week if nothing was done. at least now cjay has done something about it. i think he did the right thing, even if ryu comes back and wins. this was the way it should've gone. plus, the poll is still close. only 8.5 hours into it anyways.

I don't know the exact numbers to say how much that it would be to extrapolate how much the end of the day will be, but it has to be at least over 10,000, I would assume. And that's including the people who didn't vote today, because they assumed they voted already. I have Jill and Hayabusa can still win, and I'm fine if he does, and I think he will get a huge day vote to win. But to say this poll shouldn't be redone when there is already tons of evidence now to show that yesterday was a mess and needed to be redone.

As probably one of the biggest Jill supporters here, I think this repoll isn't the best way to handle it. Keeping the poll up for two days would have been a better idea.

Or if he'd put "REMATCH" or "REPOLL" in big bold letters above the match so people would know to vote again. The match yesterday wasn't fair, but this one is just as unfair. I'd rather be wrong on my Jill over Ryu pick in a fair poll than be right in an unfair one.

It does when the LEADER is gaining it. That means Jill is overcoming overall raising of vote totals to extend a percentage lead. The loser only has to split the vote or slightly lose the vote to keep the percentage coming closer, the winner has to get more votes than the percentage out of 100.

Obviously NewLib, but the fact of the matter is that it's not a significant matter if Jill gains .02%, all that it means is that Ryu H stalled for a very short time. And, if you look Ryu has retaken those very minor loses. Watching the % right now does no good whatesoever.

I'm still going to wait until people start getting out of school before calling this one way or the other.

But, assuming just for an instant that Jill does end up winning this with the 51% she has going now... How could that possibly make sense? Wouldn't it mean that something like 55% of the "too dumb to press the F5 button even though there's a message telling me to" voters, who haven't had their opinions registered until today, are Jill supporters? That doesn't seem possible.

I will, too, be pissed, if I lose over this. Upon reflecting the matter further, in such a close match, not only was Hayabusa's "win" yesterday lacking credibility to begin with, but so does Jill's today. The only way most people would be happy is if Hayabusa won today anyway, which seems out of the question.

All of this over the single hardest match in the first round, and the most valuable in terms of points too. Don't you just like coincidences?

Some people who may not care about the contest but visit Gamefaqs daily might be voting Jill today who previously voted Ryu just because he was winning yesterday. I know this won't account for a large amount of votes, but I can almost guarentee a couple of hundred of people changed their votes jus to vote for the "loser".

The projected vote numbers on this match are somewhere around 71K right now. I don't know what this means other than it'll be definently more votes than yesterday. The question is, will the numbers move like yesterday's did? They seem to be about the same except that Jill got a much bigger earlier lead and it looks like it is going to take a lot longer for Ryu to turn it around today. I'm hoping that Ryu's momentum will stop like it did several times yesterday, because then Jill might actually be able to hold onto her lead. Just some numbers, but Jill took a little over 30 mins to get the lead this time, and she peaked a little over 9 hours into the contest. How far will she fall today? Will Ryu's strength stop at any point like it did a few times yesterday? Will Jill get those 38K votes.....

Projecting numbers by taking the proportion of the day does NOT WORK. Voting trends differ throughout the day. Currently, we are a few thousand votes behind Vyse/Laharl at the same time of day. That puts us in the mid60s. Yesterdays afternoon trends showed an increase in awareness, and a HUGE increase in voting (from 50% of link to 85% of link), and a projection of low 60s. This match is hardly making up any votes, just a whole new, skewed voting pool. But the same trend, just in a larger, later scale.

Oh yeah, and at this time yesterday, Ryu was stabilizing his lead still, and began to pull away at around 3(6est). So I'd expect an even larger surge then. It'll come down to the night vote, which Jill seemed to get even later into the night, a short while into the match.

Creativename, please tell me that you are archiving the CATS match pic, including the message, on your site.

Um...no, saving the pic didn't occur to me actually. And what message are you talking about?

So did anybody save that pic, or know the address of it?

I'm trying to figure out the URL to enter for creativename's poll updater, but I can't figure it out. What do you enter after php?

It's already been said, but: sc2k4.com/update.php?pollid=1622

Replace 1622 with whatever. 1622 was the first poll archived I believe.

"On a side note, when did you concede defeat to Crono last year?"

He didn't do that until the end... Crono had the lead and we only had the night vote to look forward to... which clearly indicates that Crono should have won that one. Mario pulled a huge surprise that most people believe he shouldn't be capable of (the clutch).

How would it have been delusional to think Hayabusa would have still won with more than 12 hours left in a poll? I just thought it was very dumb for people in this topic to just suddenly give up because Hayabusa wasn't matching exactly what he had yesterday at the same time. Heck, even Jill's lead was nothing to start stressing over.

As for when I gave up and admitted Crono's win was around 9:00 PM Central time when he was approaching a 1000 vote lead. There was only three hours left in that poll and Mario didn't show a sign of gaining.

Besides, I have a feeling anytime the lead switches the dies losing the lead launches some sort of desperation attack. Basically, given human nature, it's not hard to beleive the 20-30 who WANT to stay honest get desperate when they see the lead change and decide to bust out with the vote stuffing. It would slow the advance as the tides turn but it wouldn't last long enough to stop it becuase it's just a hadnful of people using their last ditch effort to stop the impending march.

Jill had a lot of big stalls on Hayabusa's lead yesterday. This is the first time one of those stalls has become apparent today. I think that the common vote supports Jill and it's starting to show up in larger numbers than the stalls showed up yesterday, which is why instead of pulling away, Ryu is staying the same with Jill. This could stay within 100 votes for the next 3 hours even...that would be something. After that we don't know what's supposed to happen since that's when the polls shut yesterday.

I went on AIM, and after having a ton of people IM me within literally seconds, I signed off. That said, I told one person that Ryu H would be fine. All of Jill's pushes during the zero lead phase are from Jill supporters spamming friends with 'OMFG JILL NEEDS HELP VOTE FOR HER!1!11!!' crap and voting with alts.

But now, they have run out of alts and friends. Assuming this match follows the same pattern as yesterday's, it should be over.

"I'd say this is more of an after work rush if you ask me."

Could be true, as NG strikes me of a game that hits harder with the people in their late teens/early tweenties... people who would likely not stay up late due to college/high school/work but would come vote in the late afternoon. Yes, that's the group Jill is supposed to appeal to as well, I know... but clearly Jill has been out of the potlight for too long to win the 18-25 vote.

That's the exception, I do believe, and not the norm. Perhaps it may be prevalent throughout that area of California but many parts of the pacific time zone and Arizon have gone back to school.

The lead didn't get up to 100 and now it's back down to 60. This isn't as closed as you might think it is. Jill supporters are starting to come out now which will even out the momentum that Ryu should've had as speculated from yesterday. If Jill actually owns the night vote and can keep this thing tight for a few hours, then who knows what'll happen.

I don't see how you can be confident in Ryu's victory considering his drop in performance compared to yesterday and Jill's increase. Ryu JUST recently gained the lead, at 3 pacific. That's nearly 8 hours later than last time. And his lead is increasing much more slowly too.

In other words, Jill easily padded her lead in the early hours thanks to more voters, and Ryu is just struggling more than last time. That means Jill benefited more from the extra voters. And with Ryu still struggling to even get to 100 or so. I'd be really worried about the way the vote goes in the last 2 or 3 hours. If Jill even gets a FRACTION of the advantage she had in the opening hours, she has it in the bag.

In face, avenger, I think we're going to have to call this closer to 50/50. Ryu is still making strides forward as a whole, so we can't just call it in Jill's favor for him stalling from time to time. He is by no means the only competitor to do so.

Evening votes slow down considerably compared to the early night votes. Jill will need much more than a fraction of her advantage, especially if Ryu does build up a couple hundred votes.

Jesus Christ, we don't need to hear about what barriers Ryu is having trouble breaking. Not 175, not 100, not maintaing the lead. We KNOW that stalls happen and in the long run they don't affect overall gains unless the stall lasts for hours.

I think that if he does it should actually still be read as a good sign for MM. There's fair reason to suspect that Tidus has made a small increase since last year.

Yeah, he did, and any smart cheater would have quit as soon as they saw it, too. "Mass Cheating" doesn't necessarily cover a sizeable dent of say 30-40 votes. While I could see control flipflopping a little that is just the oddest spike we've seen all day. Reversals like that usually are signs of cheating, and it's a good thing that Ceej will be keeping on top of it.

And ryu has taken it back over 120 again... It'd be funny if a cheater was trying to be, shall we say, discrete about their actions unaware that ceej has looked and will be looking again. I dunno what His idea of mass cheating is, but in a match this damn close it better be a number equal to or perhaps even smaller than the final gap between the two, because if there is just barely enough to reverse the decision it shouldn't be allowed.

Well, it was actually a much larger window than 5 minutes, and if we take out the span from 15:42 to 16:16 Ryu has done nothing but gain as a whole. For a span of 30 minutes Jill fought back, and she did it only for 30 minutes in the middle of a time period where Ryu is expected to and has dominated? That's out of the ordinaray.

Sure, it may only have accounted for 100 unfair votes, but I think it deserves a closer look.

And uh, all of today's poll too. Duh. You don't just gain ground out of the blue when you're losing it that badly then stop gaining that ground and lose every last bit of it shortly after Ceej announces that he is looking for cheaters.

Again, find ANY poll where the same thing has happened that does't have serious doubt cast upon it.

I've watched every close match pretty closely except Sonic/Samus and I've got a very good feel of how the voting trends work. Stalls are to be expected, minor loses as well, but you don't take an 80 point loss in the middle of your peak hours for no reason.

15:30 | Ryu Hayabusa | 24292 | +0615 | 50.18% | Jill Valentine | 24120 | +0528 | 49.82% | Lead of 0172 | (Up 87)

This down is easy to see. As you can see, Jill' votes actually remains steady, while Ryu shot down.

16:00 | Ryu Hayabusa | 25255 | +0477 | 50.13% | Jill Valentine | 25121 | +0469 | 49.87% | Lead of 0134 | (Up 8)
16:15 | Ryu Hayabusa | 25702 | +0447 | 50.09% | Jill Valentine | 25606 | +0485 | 49.91% | Lead of 0096 | (Down 38)

Again, a rather consistent number for Jill, but notice Ryu's drop below 450, which is rather rare.

16:30 | Ryu Hayabusa | 26154 | +0452 | 50.17% | Jill Valentine | 25974 | +0368 | 49.83% | Lead of 0180 | (Up 84)
16:45 | Ryu Hayabusa | 26643 | +0489 | 50.21% | Jill Valentine | 26415 | +0441 | 49.79% | Lead of 0228 | (Up 48)

The only thing I find suspicious here is Jill's sudden drop, and then back up to its normal levels. I suppose it can be explained, but I wouldn't use cheating UNLESS constant cheating has been going on for her for the past 2 hours. Which I find unbelievable that Ceej wouldn't catch.

IE, no cheating.

Incorrect.

Jill took the first 8 hours of the poll rather easily.

So for the first 8 hours, Jill had the advantage.

Ryu started coming back after those 8 hours and then took the advantage for the next 11. So Ryu has the afternoon and evening, they were not "tied" in terms of incoming votes.

The last 5 hours of the poll are unknown.

"The last 5 hours of the poll are unknown."

If that is the case, and Ryu was still gaining when Ceej shut it down, then Jill will have to wait out a 2 hour mutual stall before she can stage a comeback in the least busy hours of the poll. Things aren't looking to be in her favor.

Does anybody know how large Ganondorf's comeback against Magus was?

And to completely change the subject, how well do you guys think Vaan and Ashe (from FFXII) would do in the contest next year?

Assuming FFXII is pretty popular and is released in say June, I wouldn't be that shocked if Vaan managed to pull Noble Nine numbers and possibly sneak into the Elite Eight for 2005 due to the recency of its release.

Ashe will probably be around Zero or Aeris level since she seems to play a pretty big role in the game.

Does anybody know how large Ganondorf's comeback against Magus was?

There was no comeback. Ganondorf never had the lead in that match, and he never really got closer than 400-500 throughout the day.

And don't expect too much from FFXII next year. Give it time to settle in first. Not to mention, we have to make sure that Vaan's not another Zidane and Ashe isn't the next Rinoa.

Well, I've got my own theories that for characters in a big name game for the first couple months their popularity is huge, then for a while they take a dip in popularity and then as word of mouth spreads about the game they start rising again.

But this is again just a theory, and I for one think that FFXII will give us some interesting opportunities* to study the full spectrum of a character's popularity growth, to see whether my crazy theories are right or not.

*Assuming it's released close to the start of the contest.

And to completely change the subject, how well do you guys think Vaan and Ashe (from FFXII) would do in the contest next year?

They probably wouldn't be anything threatening. In fact, the game is projected to be released here in Winter of 2005 according to IGN. So, the odds of them even making it in next year don't exactly seem likely. If they did, I would imagine around the mid to low 20's. You have to understand that being too recent won't exactly help.

Assuming FFXII is pretty popular and is released in say June, I wouldn't be that shocked if Vaan managed to pull Noble Nine numbers and possibly sneak into the Elite Eight for 2005 due to the recency of its release.

That would be very shocking if you ask me. It is far, far to recent to pull Noble Nine numbers and the only character to come close to that is Tidus and even then his game came out in 2001. That's given him plenty of time to get settled in the contest be around for a while and still remain in the more "recent" category. You also have the ability of Vaan being one of those weaker Final Fantasy characters.

Well, my comments were more what would happen assuming FFXII was as popular as FFX, which probably won't happen.

From what I've heard Ashe appears to be almost a dual main character of sorts, which is why I put her high although I could be wrong, about the main character part of it.

I just got 399 vote difference. This is going slowly but Jill is still working at it. Remember how Ryu got stalled when they got to the tie? Well maybe those same desperation votes are being thrown at Ryu now to keep him going forward. Jill could start gaining slow momentum soon. It's all a matter of how well it'll help with under 5 hours to go. It would be intense to see it get even with like 30 mins to go.

well, I think voting either in the first few minutes or only in a close match the last few minutes is better than just normal voting. Cause in those two scenarios it just appears that your vote does more i.e. it affects the early percentages, and could bust a tie. Does it really change anything? no, but it just seems better

About the question on how FF12's Ashe and Vaan would do. We don't know yet, the only way to tell is to see how FF12 performs. The game comes out roughly six months before the Su2K5 contest begins, and it'll have to get some buzz during that time. We all know that can happen, look at FF10, came out roughly 6 or so months before the 2002 contest and Tidus made some noise.

I'm not sure how well Vaan could do. Correct me if I'm wrong, but was it not rumored that Vaan was homosexual? Nothing is wrong with that, of course, but I doubt that the generally homophobic teenagers out there would vote for a character like that. Has that been disproven or something? I assume it has, because he is supposed to have a female love interest in the story, but I don't know. =/

On the subject of Vaan, I'd probably do something stupid and have him winning a match that almost no other Board 8 users have him winning, kinda like the people who have Frog over Solid Snake.

I'd see him around the level of Frog.

Frog? Naw. I see him more around Ryu H. Maybe Frog in 2k6, but not 2k5.

It might be a bit late to bring this up, but how strong do you think Vivi would be if he had had the bracket support?

Bah. I miss one first round match and it's the one that most likely means 3 points rather than 1. It also means my chance to finish in the prizes. Oh well, at least I can enjoy things a little more now.

I'd say 60% on DK wouldn't be out of the question.
