Ok I am just finalizing my bracket right now and I was wondering if you guys think of the following matchs.

Luigi vs Yoshi- I have Luigi winning but Yoshi is really popular

Crono vs Mario-I have Crono winning but losing to Link the next round.

Shadow vs Tidus- I have shadow winning but the square fanbase has gotten stronger so I might switch it.

Frog vs Liquid Snake- I have Frog winning but losing to Master Chief the next round.

Vyse vs Laharl- I have Vyse winning.

Sonic vs Samus- I have Samus winning.

Analysis:

Well Link did win in 2002 and he destroy his competition only Sephiroth came close and it wasn’t even that close, but 2003 comes around and Cloud, Sephiroth and a few other Final Fantasy characters got a boost from the new game Kingdom Hearts and Cloud was able to defeat Link and now Sephiroth would have a very close match if it were to happen. This year Link looks like he might win this and only the winner of the Cloud/Sephiroth match would appose a threat to Link.

Here we have the biggest joke ever to be in this contest three times in a row, CATS. CATS has never won a match and he never got above 20% of the vote. CATS is from the game Zero Wing which had a very bad translation job. It was so bad that before CATS first match an army called the CATS Army was made and during both of CATS matches there has been topics of quotes from the game like, “All your base belongs to us” and “Somebody set up us the bomb”. Though many you think that the Army dies down once CATS is defeated, but you’re wrong even after CATS loses the army will anti-vote the character until they lose. Even though 500 votes isn’t a lot it could really make a difference if you’re in a very close match.

This is probably one of the easiest matches to predict. Both Link and CATS have faced a similar opponent, Cloud. And Link did much better against him then CATS did. Though if you ask me if it wasn’t for the CATS Army I think characters like Cloud and Link would easily get over 90% against him.

I think that the first match could give us an idea on who will win the contest. If Link does better then Cloud did in 2003 I think we could see Link winning this because with CATS I can only see him increasing in popularity with the CATS Army gaining popularity. Though if Link does do worse then Cloud did unless it was by a lot then I wouldn’t count Link out yet.

The only way I can see Link gaining popularity this year is from the hype of Link’s new game that will come out in 2005, but we already know that game hype really doesn’t help a character, but this may be an exception.

Like I said before this match doesn’t really need a preview, but if it wasn’t for the CATS Army and CATS joke character status I think that this could’ve been the biggest blowout this year.

Don't blame SF: TM too much for that (although there are several cases of canon abuse that you could blame it for). It's my theory that Raul's immune system to badness was weakened by Overdrawn at the Memory Bank, a movie that make SF: TM actually look good.

I know, that's my huge point. A couple other ones are the fact that I'm not sure if people want to see someone who already won to win again (though Seph won't, I think), and the fact that Mega Man went from 7th to 4th rank over the two contests, and maybe he can make that last jump to first.

It's best not to go by CJayC's ranking because it shows how far that person got into the tournament. You'd rather have a ranking based on strength, in which case Mega Man started out in 3rd for 2002 and then went to 4th in 2003.

Well or Link for that matter. I just don't see it. The blue bomber's new game isn't enough to raise his popularity to beat the big three. The second contest he did recieve 4th place. Sephiroth kind of blew him out of the water though. Sephiroth is almost as powerful as Cloud. Things have changed a lot from last year but I don't get how the power that he has is enough to beat Cloud or Link. Personally I would like to see Snake beat him, but he won't.

It's not one of those statistic backed choices, I'm taking the necessary risk to see if it can payoff for me. I've actually never picked anyone outside of the favorite to win the contest and everytime I've still managed to get screwed over by me not catching something or just not winning. Sure, it doesn't sound like something that'll happen but it's certainly not impossible. After Cloud, Sephiroth, and Link there is a certain blue hero in line waiting to win, so whether he does or not we'll have to see. Bunch of different factors go into the decision.

Well, Samus isn't exactly one of the people whose next in line at beating one of those three nor is she as strong as Mega Man. Plus, she hasn't had anything to help her out between last year and this year. Not even something to possibly consider. In Sephiroth's case I can't exactly say how big of an upset he'd really be on the overall scheme of things. Sure, by the BOP he's the choice one to go with but he shouldn't be to far behind Cloud and Link in the grand scheme of things.

And yeah, I do really like Mega Man a lot and do want to see him win it over the rest of them. Make no mistake though my bracket isn't based on who I want to win matches, and I do plan on getting my $400 online gift certificate when this is all said and done, but I just happen to like Mega Man a lot so it helps. ;p

Ness vs. Jak and Auron vs. Scorpion, do ANY of them deserve to be in the Sweet 16. One of them has to be, it'll most likely be Auron, but I contest that NONE of them deserve to make it past the second round. What do you think?

I have Jak vs. Auron. I for one believe Auron was a good character in a cast of bad ones. I think he will beat Jak. Ness's fan base is somewhat small, and Jak is a big platformer. I gotta go to dinner I'll check this when I get back.

Auron is a sweet 16 worthy character. Any top 20 charcter in this contest deserves it, because some of them have to get shafted. It's not like Lara Croft, Pac-Man, and Scorpion going to the sweet 16, with the latter also making elite 8. Those characters didn't deserve it, and Auron could beat anyone of them with ease.

MK is the bottom rung of fighting games, and Scorpion isn't even the most worthy character from that game. The only reason Scorpion can still put up a tiny bit of a fight is because some people remember the "good old days" when senseless violence slapped onto a poorly made copy of someone else's hard work was cool.

I think Auron in the Sweet 16 is quite the tough case. I believe Alucard made it twice due to the opposition being too easy. Alucard is pretty much non-deserving... Auron's a little stronger, so I'd say he's only half-deserving. Not even borderline-deserving like guys like Shadow, Squall, Ryu or Zelda. Auron needs an easy way there, and he's got it. Scorpion will put up much more of a fight than Ness or Jak could ever hope to.

Speaking of Scorpion, he strikes me as the kind of guy who should win a match in average every two years. He's been screwed over badly ever since he did worse than Strider against Link.

HQH, as I said before Auron was the best character coming from that mediocre game. He may not be deserving of sweet sixteen. On a video game site though that doesn't have RPG's as it's main heroes I still think he would get in the contest. A society of non-dorky video gamers that big doesn't exist.

If you ask the average video game player who Auron is, they will have no idea. Scorpion on the other hand, is very well-known even amongst those who don't play fighting games. FFX may be slightly mainstream, but that doesn't mean anyone gives a flying **** about the characters. Auron is a nobody, a fairly cool nobody, but a nobody nonetheless. Is this weren't SquareFAQs he wouldn't be in the contest at all, and he is NOT deserving of a place in the Sweet 16.

HQH, this is the wrong topic to be a troll in. Or at least, you're trolling the wrong way in this topic. Face facts, FFX's sales when compared to any non-FF RPG are rediculously high. Xenosaga was outsold by FFX in a 10 to 1 ratio. Only one RPG has ever sold more than a million copies in this country without carrying the either the FInal Fantasy or the Pokemon name... and that would be Kingdom Hearts. FFX isn't some niche game that most peopel have never heard of, anyone who walks into a Gamestop or similar store to buy a game for themself more than twice a year has heard of it. Not just on this site, but on any video game site, FFX is about as mainstream as you can get.

But all that hasn't been able to net him higher than a 61st place finish in the rankings. Last year he was CloudFodder, this year he is LinkFodder. Will he once again give an easy first round victory to the eventual champion? I'm hoping so.

two more things right off the bat -

first of all, as soon as i saw Link's fancy new look being used for his pic, i said, " oh crap. Link is gonna win this whole thing now."

however, (HM also made a topic about this) it sure is taking Link a while to stabilize his lead. it's 15 minutes into the poll and after 1500 votes, Link has only increased to 76%. wasn't Cloud well over 80% by this point? CATS might be getting an extra night boost, but Link had better pick up the slack if he's gonna dethrone Cloud.

Same as Ganondorf here. Deserved a higher seed and received a horrible draw. Looks like Alucard won’t be making it to the Sweet 16 this year. He’s going to have trouble getting out of Round 1.

Well, after Link vs CATS, we’re going to need a good close match. Some may argue that Ganondorf will win easily because he beat Tidus, FFX star and a tough opponent, by about 1,600 votes, and lost to Magus, another tough opponent by 550 votes. Magus went on to lose against Link 65-35, which is pretty impressive knowing Link’s strength. Alucard on the other hand, beat Tails and Duke in 2002, and Bomberman and Kirby in 2003 to get to the Sweet 16. All easy opponents. Well, that is my argument. Ganondorf will beat Alucard. Yes, it does seem like it is a tough decision at first, but once you look at the stats, it’s simple.

Dp's Analysis

It's a damn shame that one of these two characters, who have found such success in these contests, will have to lose in Round 1 (and the other will surely lose in Round 2). While Alucard is quite badass, so is Ganondorf, the villain of the extremely popular Legend of Zelda series. While the Castlevania series is quite popular as well, it doesn't add up to the popularity of the Legend of Zelda series. Ganondorf shouldn't even be an 8-seed, but CJayC was obviously trying to set up Link vs. Ganondorf in Round 2. Alucard should be seeded higher as well, but oh well. This basically comes down to Legend of Zelda versus Castlevania, and we know Legend of Zelda wins that battle. This is probably the easiest of the 8 vs. 9 matches to call, Ganondorf isn't going to lose. A first round exit is all a part of Alucard's plan…

Well, as everybody said, this match could mean many different things. For one, it could mean the CATS Army has died down. In all fairness, they probably haven't done even half of the stuff that they did last year, but on the other hand I don't really see them slipping that much.

On the other hand, this could be a sign (like I've been saying) that the new poll placement could be favoring Nintendo characters. I don't think it will favor them enough to let Link beat Cloud, and it's way too soon to call anything, so I guess time will tell.

case in point - a week before the contest started i was hanging out with a group of friends who play video games, but aren't nearly as hardcore as i am (about 6 friends, all whom i would consider "casual gamers"). this contest came up while we were chatting and i asked, "well, who do you guys like more - Link or Cloud?" every single one of them responded by saying, "well, which Link? Wind Waker Link or Ocarina of Time Link or Young Link or Smash Bros. Link or Soul Calibur Link or what?" most of them agreed that they definitely liked Cloud more than both Wind Waker Link and Young Link. (only one friend stuck with every version of Link over Cloud.) but when it came to the other versions of Link, they were pretty split, especially Link's new and improved Gamecube look.

usually, pictures don't matter when it comes to the really well-known characters. but when a well-known character receives such a drastic image change (like Link), especially when it is a highly favorable image change, the picture DOES matter.

to be honest i picked Cloud in my bracket because i was counting on CJayC using Wind Waker Link's pics because he has NEVER used pics from upcoming games in the contest. he has always used pics from games that are already released. i do believe that this is the first time he's used a pic from a game that's not out yet.

now, i'm definitely not calling the contest over yet (duh, lol), but these E3 pics are definitely a good thing for Link.

i agree. CATS wouldn't make an impact on Link if the picture was a stick figured Link scribbled on a napkin.

what i am saying, though, is that not everyone likes all versions of Link exactly the same and that is a fact. and contrary to what Ulti said before, what a character looks like does contribute to whether or not people like a charater. yes, usually it doesn't matter for a well-known character, but when the character's look drastically changes, then yes, they can gain or lose popularity. it's not a guarantee that they will change in popularity, but it is a very realistic possiblity that shouldn't be dismissed so quickly.

I could see Link doing a bit better against total fodder just because he's overall more recognized. Not everyone played FF7, not everyone can recognize Cloud Strife. And although not everyone has played a Zelda game, practically everyone can recognize Link. Oh, and AYB fading away is a possibility too... CATS failed to jump ahead at the beginning, if this is any indication.

Yeah, I know, we have a stock full of rotten tomatoes to throw at CJayC for the trashy seeding - this should be a 3 vs. 6 second round match, not an 8 vs. 9 day two encounter! Take care to keep a stock of the tomatoes, because we'll need them later.

Don't expect many stupid jokes here, it's hard to joke about Ganondorf and a character you know nothing about. Can I get started, now?

Ah, Ganondorf. Can't seem to have any slack in this contest environment. First, a surprisingly close bout with Re-Jecht - ironically enough, it wasn't so surprising for those outside the board, as Tidus was actually the slight favorite! Turned out to be the first of many signs that Kingdom Hearts was about to own the contest (yet most of us didn't figure it out until Cloud nearly doubled Sonic). Then he encountered God's gift to mankind, who totally underachieved in the first round as well (though most of us had ungodly high expectations following Crono's near-final appearance in 2002). And he lost. By 400 votes. Whew.

And now he meets Alucard, a guy who built a huge reputation on this board by making the Sweet 16 twice... by beating weak opponents, the strongest of which is Kirby. I just can't bring myself to take Alucard seriously as a strong contender. Yet some people do. That, combined with the deadly "He almost lost to Tightass!" attitude towards Ganondorf, is an explosive cocktail leading to heroicmarioness... er, I mean, delusion.

I'll say it again, I know nothing about Alucard. Except that it's supposedly CJayC's personal favorite. And that Ulti can put sex aside to play SotN. (Shouldn't elaborate too much on that, I promised myself to keep that tidbit for another preview.) So he must kick ass, somewhere. I'll just let other people sing his praises in my place.

Meanwhile, Ganondorf, thanks to Wind Waker, has become Nintendo's most detailed character. With that ending, he became more than a "capture-princess-conquer-world" villain, a stage where Bowser still is. He now has a purpose behind his action, something all other Nintendo characters lack. Although he looked like ass in Wind Waker... he seemingly was quite upset about OoT Link repeatedly whacking his tail with a hammer. And whenever he's upset he eats! (Expected me to go all the way without a LegendaryFrog reference, huh?) Hence why he doubled his mass between games. For some weird reason, that doesn't prevent him from dual-wielding like nobody's business. But hey, it's from the same people who thought it was a good idea to bring back Tingle to suck 3385 Rupees out of your wallet over the course of the game.

Even if I wouldn't immediately start doubting Cloud unless you weren't confident in him winning to start with. If you were on the edge when the bracket locked then by all means any little thing could make one worry more, but based off one match and without seeing anything from Cloud I wouldn't start worrying. Even as it stands now Link hasn't even done 1% better than Cloud last year.

Analysis:

Ganondorf was on the winning side and the losing side of two of the closest matches in 2003 though he didn’t make an appearance in 2002 he did do very well at finishing 11th and being ranking fairly close to Sonic. Though he easily has the power to make it to the Sweet 16, but with the given seed and the likely match-up against Link in the second round Ganondorf will lose for the second time in the second round though it won’t be as close as last years. I see Ganondorf as a strong character, but he needs a better seeding for him to show what he is really made of.

Alucard in the other hand has been to both contests. He also made it to the Sweet 16 both times too though he did really have an easy path there, his biggest blowout was against Bomberman and that’s after he got his big boost from his new game. Also in both years he has lost to Final Fantasy VII characters, but this year he would have to make it to the finals to face a Final Fantasy VII character and with characters like Link, Mario, Crono, Mega Man and Solid Snake in his way he probably won’t make it to the finals. Also this year Alucard will probably not get to the Sweet 16 with all of the hard competition in his way. The hardest opponent that Alucard beat was Kirby and Kirby isn’t the strongest of characters.

Both characters are underseeded, but Ganondorf is underseeded by more. Both characters could easily win a match and make it to the Sweet 16, but with this kind of seeding it’s not going to happen this year.

Since both characters are strong this match has become very hyped. Even though this match isn’t even going to be close people have Alucard as the winner. Even though this division doesn’t really have a close match this match isn’t going to be the closest though.

Between 2003 and 2004 Alucard did get a game for the Playstation 2 called Castlevania: Lament of Innocence. Though it didn’t live up to its early game hype it is a really good game. Though could that make this match a little closer? Maybe, but that’s not enough for him to win though.

Ganondorf hasn’t gotten any big game releases, but there were smaller ones, but I don’t think Ganondorf would gain from anything like that because when someone mentions The Legend of Zelda most people would first think either Link or Zelda. So Ganondorf hasn’t reached legendary status like Link or Zelda have reached.

There really isn’t much difference of gains or losses between the characters so this match will most likely play out as Ganondorf taking the match with ease, but he also won’t double Alucard either.

Okay, I have a serious issue with some people, methinks.

I'm not usre why, but most people are under the assumption that Terry Bagard is goign to be beaten by Sonic in a 25/75 split or worse!!! It doesn't take a genius to figure out that DK didn't suddenly double in popularity, right? Clearly he was hit by SFF, and because he was... every in his four-pack was also hit by it. 87% he increased, so isn't it reasonable to say everyone in his four-pack would rise equally? That being said, assuming Sonic hasn't budged even an inch since 2k2, neither down nor up, Terry will still score 30%, easily. What is it about Terry Bogard that makes people think Sonic is capable of trippling him? The way I see it (that is, using the math) Sonic is going to have trouble doubling him. I admit I took one look at the extrapolated standings for 2002 and thought that Terry Bogard wasn't going to be able to get more than 25% but if he did go up from the SFF DK suffered then I could imagine him getting higher. I don't want to say he'd be able to match Ken (33%) but around 30% would be great to see.

You seriously think Terry Bogard has dropped 40% of his popularity in two years? Really, think about it, the SNK fanbase is the epitome of "die-hard". They are, bar none, the Hardest of the Hardcore, and I would be highly doubtful if you said even one of the SNK voters from 2k2 would change their vote. They may not be at this site, but their vote won't change if they are. And frankly, as things stand, if this were the 2k5 SC I'd be willign to bet that Terry would do even better than SFF adjusted extrapolated standings would show. There are two higher profile KoF games on the way, one a 3D game for the PS2 and the other a 2D game made by Sammy (Y a know, the Guilty Gear people).

If the casual vote is down from 2k3 and SNK fans are the Hardest of the Hardcore do you seriously think that Terry will drop 40%? Actually, HM... Dk jumped from 13.51 to 25.34 implying that You multiply DK's 2k2 % by 1.8757 (give or take) to get his 2k3 %. Multiply Terry's 2k2 percetange by 1.8757 and you get 17.48 unless you somehow assume that DK either increased in actual popularity from 2k2 to 2k3 or you believe that adjustments aren't linear.

what i am saying, though, is that not everyone likes all versions of Link exactly the same and that is a fact. and contrary to what Ulti said before, what a character looks like does contribute to whether or not people like a charater. yes, usually it doesn't matter for a well-known character, but when the character's look drastically changes, then yes, they can gain or lose popularity. it's not a guarantee that they will change in popularity, but it is a very realistic possiblity that shouldn't be dismissed so quickly.

...people aren't as stupid as you guys think they are. I severely doubt that a character as strong a Link would care one way or the other.

Link/CATS Comments

When I first saw CATS go below 13.09% at such a rapid rate, I thought Cloud might be in trouble. But CATS seems to have stabilized at around the 12.1% mark, which is pretty good. Link outdid Cloud by a whole 1%. Whopdeedo. If Cloud retains his 2003 strength, he should still be able to take down Link in a hypothetical match, though it will obviously be much closer than it was last year. I'd guess within 1500 votes or so, thought the mathheads in this topic may be able to come up with a concrete number going out to the 17th decimal place. Either way, I'll evaluate Cloud's true chances after he smacks Duke around later. I think that the AYB fad is finally starting to die off, considering the alarming lack of CATS topics. That may have something to do with it as well.

And the vote totals remain lower than people want them to be. Perfect setting for Square in most close matches.

Ganon/Alucard Preview

God damn whoever thought it necessary to give you a 9 seed this year. Both you and Ganon are underseeded in this thing, and it will cost you both. It has also given us a very predictable four pack in Division Hyrule as one again, Link won't be tested until the Final Four. Can someone PLEASE stick this guy in the same division as Sephiroth next year?

Anyway, to the point. Alucard's plan calls for throwing this match in order to give the Zelda fans their cheap version of Sephiroth vs Cloud, followed by sweaty max sex with the Ulti.

I totally agree about what cyko said about Link. I've said it before myself, but I guess people didn't pay much attention. Many people don't consider all forms of Link to be the same. It might not make a difference to a person if they were gonna pick Cloud anyways, but to those following Link there is a BIG difference. I think some people are in denial by saying pics make NO difference in matches. I say the jury is still out. There have only been TWO contests, and you can't really base scientific evidence on two cases. Of course you can still try....

That being said, I wonder if CJayC is bringing back Bat-Cloud for this contest? I want all characters at FULL strength, pic and all so there won't be ANY debate about the results.....

While I can sympathize with your laziness I really wanna see how your formular works. When I put my brain to task I did this:

DK = 25.34
Aya = .9585DK = 24.29
Terry = .5439Aya = 13.31

Which differs from your numbers. Lower, even. Perhaps soemwhere along the way I didn't round off when I should have (I used the decimals up to the 10 billionth's place except when determining what % one character compares to the other). I suppose those adjustments are more accurate, but it makes little sense that from match to match that as little as that would carry over. Perhaps there's a reason why I've never taken a statistics course... nevertheless, it just feels wrong to say that if one character is under-rated by a certain ammount that a character that is only compared to the first should be less under-rated.

Terry Bogard isn't very strong. He lost to Aya with 35% who barely lost to DK. That puts Terry Bogard about on par with Vyse, most likely. I wouldn't be at all surprised if Sonic tripled Terry, especially after a 69% win vs. Ken.

In fact, I think a lot of Terry Bogard votes were just from people who didn't know who Aya Brea was...

As for these 2002 SFF-adjusted standings, I think it's more likely that Mario overperformed against Sephiroth in 2003, not Mario underperformed against Link in 2002. Mario did beat Cloud, even though Cloud was stronger, and same with the 2003 Crono.

I have 2002 extrapolating standings based on this: Cloud goes up from 37.39% to 38.49%, while Cloud goes down from 43.35% to 38.58%. (in case you forgot, I got those values based on the assumption that the Sonic/Tails/Knuckles proportions were always the same) Maybe I'll post them sometime.

CATS was a fad, and nothing more. That "haha, it's CATS!" reactions wear off after awhile. SNK fans are, on the otherhand, extremely deveoted to the point where many pay upwards of $350 for new games on their favorite system (Not to mention the older and rarer games on the system). I mean really, other than crazy, hardcore SNK fans who buys a 16-bit console for $600-1000 and new carts for said system at $300-350? No one.

There's no way Vyse is as weak as Bub...no way. Either that, or Bub is almost as strong as Terry Bogard, at the very least. In fact, I think Round 1 of 2002 was a bunch of weak performances of the Nintendo characters. I do honestly think anti-votes were bigger for Mario when he faced Servbot than when he faced Shadow.

Nothing at all can happen ot a character and they can shift slightly, no big deal, because it's probably caused more by random variance of voters than anything else. Heck, it takes a month to do round one, it's not impossible that after an entire month we may come to a day where more people may favor DK than the last tiem he was at bat.

Vercetti got 33% on Mega Man, and we obviously know that both Tidus and Shadow would defeat Vercetti. So we are already starting at 33%. But mid 40s guys? I think that is a real stretch. I also do not see the debate on Teeeeedus and Shadow, as I cannot fathom a leading mainstream FF-character being defeated by the second fiddle of a dying franchise. When it is all said and done this board will be shocked Teeeeedus pulls 53% on Shadow, only to grab 10% less than that on the Blue Bomber.

On a different subject... I think as of right now, one match in, I give Link a bit of an edge on Cloud. Yeah, the AYB fad is just that, but almost a full percent is a lot, especially given 30k less votes (as more voters obviously favor more mainstream characters). I mean, I am not damning my pick of Cloud to take it all, but just wondering what variables are, in fact, leading to this transitive (A=B, B=C, so A=C... transitive, right?) gain.

Casual bracket makers are not as contest savy as you give them credit for. It might sound arrogant, but they're so far out of our league it isn't even funny. Case in point: I told a good friend of mine (who knows nothing about these contests) to make a bracket for Spring. Keep in mind that he's a very good gamer and knew most of the games in the contest. He had such things as Metal Gear over Mario 3 and Halo in the Finals. In fact, about 80% of his points came from CT, his favorite game.

In short, most casual bracket makers = Really Teh SUCK

They may not be as into the contest as we are, but again for that many of them to think Link can't win would be lacking a brain. I find the fact that they just might not care nearly as much as before far more likely than after two contests thinking Link can't win a round. A month ago when the bracket first came out...I was angry. Angry at all the nondeserving entrants who lose and lose and lose yet keep getting nominated by halfwit fanboys. And the biggest mistake of the bracket is right here...and thankfully in a day's time, it will be remedied, when Yoshi takes out the overseeded, overblown, overexposed Ryo Hazuki of Shenmue infamy.

Shenmue??? Some kiddies will shake their heads tomorrow...saying things like "Who is this bloke?" "Another nobody...must be from a PC game?" And so forth. Truth is, Shenmue is an underachieving cult classic...from Dreamcast to X-Box and now...headed on the road traveled by Duke...the road to nowhere.

I gotta wonder how the cult of Shenmue, numbering at about 15 fanboys at last count, managed to persuade Ceej to not only put him in, but seed him better than CATS. I really think if there is one match CATS could win, it would be against Ryo. Gordon? He would destroy Ryo...no contest.

Obviously Yu Suzuki bought some ad space from Ceej so he naturally was given a spoils spot. The spot belongs in my book to Dr. Wily...or Sigma...or Sweet Tooth...or Maximo..or Rayne...or Vincent. 6 peeps I nominated...but lost out to the likes of guys like Ryo and more I will bash when their times come.

Good riddance to ye, Ryo...you wont last 10 minutes.

And the King rides on, his trusty Paleozoic steed leading the way into the next matchup...

Results: Yoshi will have no trouble digesting this flop of a match, chewing Ryo up and spitting his carcass out, between 75-80% margin.

Meh, they were never *that* accurate--highly accurate, but not perfect. Year-over-year volatility and all. With Ganon's rise this will be well within a moderate margin of error.

In actuality, the CATS vs. Link match was off by about the same amount as this match. CATS did 10% worse than what 2K3 extrapolation implies. If Alucard ends up with 44% here, he'll have done about 10% better. It's just that small changes in blowouts don't stand out as much, even though theoretically they are tougher to get than larger changes in closer matches.

If Link vs. CATS is as good at indicating the future as Cloud vs. CATS was last year, Link will "easily" win this year (over 53.5% on Cloud). But like most, I'm not convinced of that just from this one match. If for no other reason than Link/The Legend of Zelda's known propensity towards extreme blowouts--Link and the Zelda series might just be more prone towards getting higher %es against jobbers than other heavyweights, due to perhaps being "inoffensive" or having cross-demographic appeal or some other crazy hypothesis ;)

Note that, not counting Donkey Kong, the average change in a character's extrapolated strength from 2K2 to 2K3 was 12%. So differences from the extrapolated expectations of that magnitude are to be expected.

This is why I've been saying people are being too confident about matches between characters who are not that far apart in the extrapolated standings. People are so damn certain about Sonic vs. Samus, Luigi vs. Yoshi, etc. I am of the opinion that extreme confidence is unwarranted in those matches, though I still expect the favorites to win.

I'd say it's the same thing that caused vote totals to decrease I would think. Vote totals are down about 20%, and total brackets are too.

The way I did it was just to take the entrant's % of all points as their odds of winning. You can use various point systems--the 2^(Round-1) system Ceej uses, though I think a 4^(Round-1) system gives better values. You can see the explanation here:

SC2K3 FIRST DRAFT - PAGE 3 - (5) YOSHI vs. (12) RYO HAZUKI

Disclaimer: This preview series may contain mildly offensive stuff, as well as SPOILERS, not only for the characters discussed, but other stuff as well.

Yoshi is in luck. Not every character can star in the biggest piece of junk gaming ever spit out, yet retain a shred of popularity. (Though to be fair, I believed Yuna to be the #1 prospect for a boost this year. Double standard? Nah. Yoshi's Story sucked THAT MUCH.) He's really lucky that the SNES era was so kind to him, it put him in the spot of the "biggest Mario fan-favorite". Ahead of Luigi. And it took only one game. Of course, he took a huge backseat in the N64 era. 120 stars in SM64, all for what? Yoshi giving you a handful of lives. Boo. I would've loved to ride Yoshi in the Whomp Fortress, having him eat a Whomp and **** a huge-ass egg out. But hey, it's still my favorite Mario to date, so it isn't bad. Then the dino appeared in a bunch of spin-offs, and a second game starring him was on the way. SMW2 was great, so this one should be even better, right?

OH MY GOD WE WERE TERRIBLY WRONG. Seems Yoshi decided to move to the land of the Teletubbies, and mate there. The result? A bunch of baby Yo****ubbies (geesh, that $!"/?%|!"$"/?% censor) singing in the intro. I cringe to the point where even Tails' new voice actor would be a soothing sound. Reggie wouldn't have been pleased if he was around then. Then there was SSBM, where the only thing he was able to do decently was homeruns, and Ganondorf does them better regardless - over 11000 feet.

Then came SMS. Yoshi was rideable, he was cool again. But I swear, some people... they really just can't be satisfied. They wanted the green Yoshi. Makes me ashamed to be a Nintendo fan. In short, Yoshi's history is a roller coaster followed by a loop-de-loop. But he's still popular. Hard to explain, since he endured the same kind of crap as Tails over the years, and Tails didn't survive.

Oh, and his opponent? Um, some Japanese dude from a game practically no one played, but those who did play it love it to death. 8-fanboy wonder... one of them passed away in the massacre against FF10 (and somewhere deep down, its sequel, which only hurts more). Him winning a match is as much of a mystery as the hypothetcal case of Gordon ever doing so.

The big question today is whether Yoshi will triple Ryo or not. I'm torn. Yoshi is, after all, a wee bit below Dante in the extrapolated standings. And we're seeing today what kind of margin of error we can expect from them...

Well, a guy like Alucard, despite packing quite some punch in contest environment, is practically the cultish kind of guy. The opposite of a guy like Crono, who's neither cultish nor mainstream.

It's going to be interesting which distinction turns out to be the right one... many matches could hang in the balance, like Crono/Mario (maybe even Magus/Crono!) and Ness/Jak.

Slowflake, the GBA game was Aria of Sorrow. Even though the spelling was different, one of the characters said something like, "You've met Aluca - I mean Arikado, haven't you?"

Either way, the percentage isn't off too far from what was expected. This is within an acceptable margin of error, right? After all, the formula assumes that everything will stay the same no matter who the character faces, and we know that's not true. Things would be prone to some volatility depending on the opponent.

I would say so, it's not like this was a 52-48 match after the standings had him at 60%. Considering how plenty of things can change from year to year, and they most certainly will, then I don't see why this isn't an acceptable margin of error.

Well, this certainly shoots down my "Sephiroth anti-votes theory," since according to that Ganondorf should be doing better than expected, unless...

A) The votebase truly did shift in a somewhat significant way.

B) That PS2 game really did help Alucard out to a significant degree.

C) Ganondorf dropped for some inexplicable reason. There's not really any I can think of short of WW getting old, but it's not like it's that old. Just under a year and a half, plus the Zelda Bonus Disk came out.

D) The new poll placement gives a boost to cult characters. However, CATS should have done better than he did in that case. Not saying that he's really a "cult" character, but they share several of the same characteristics.

Ganondorf is at 57.8% right now and has been rising for quite a while now. He should be able to surpass the point he peaked at earlier and hopefully reach 58%, as for him losing ground I really don't think this makes much sense at all. There isn't one reason for him to lower, but then again the loss of 20,000 voters and the poll's position could be accounting for him not being able to get the 60% the extrapolated standings had him at. I don't think this is anything absolutely crazy though, it's not like Ganondorf is doing terrible.

I mean, Frog/Magus would be "direct" but just for argument's sake I am throwing Crono/Magus into the discussion. I mean we talk about SFF with a match like Link/Samus or Super Metroid/LttP.

The new PS2 game helping Alucard sounds like a reasonable explanation. That game may have introduced more gamers to the Castlevania series. It's in the style of a DMC type game so I can see it attracting the more casual gamer. These new people might have tried out some of the older games in the series.

in a bowser/ganon match, I think I would have bowser winning that, cause Bowser just seems bigger in some sense than ganondorf. that would be a good matchup.

Alucard and Ganondorf were both pretty big draws last year, so it's no surprise they're getting more voters in than Link and Cats. Unfortunately, the next batch of matches should drop down again until Tidus/Shadow. Though the Crono/Conker one should do well also.

Cloud vs. Sephiroth went precisely as you would've expected based on previous matches (Cloud vs. Link, Sephiroth vs. Mario). As far as we know hero vs. villain does nothing in terms of influencing %es, though this is the only example we have.

I'm guessing there will be some SFF in Link vs. Ganon, but not too much. Nintendo matches are known for SFF but I think there's less overlap between hero and villain fanbases than hero and hero. I would also think Crono vs. Magus would have less SFF than Link vs. Ganon, being a Square match. Last year we would've expected Link to get 65% on Ganon, my Oracle prediction this year will probably be 70%-74%. Crono would've gotten 54% last against Magus, I guess he'll probablly get within a couple percentage points of that this year. My personal expectation is of virtually no visible SFF in Crono vs. Magus. It'll be interesting to see what actually happens.

Match 1: (1) Link vs. (16) CATS Review

Link beat CATS, 87.83% - 12.17%.

Well Link did do better against CATS then Cloud did last year, but it was less then 1%. I never actually thought Link would beat CATS by that much.

This match also proves that Link has a chance to win, but he still isn’t the favorite. Even though Link did beat CATS by more then Cloud did it wasn’t much and also we haven’t seen Cloud in action yet.

What caused Link to do so well against CATS well I’ve thought of a few possibilities.

1. There’s hype for Link’s game.
2. The CATS fad is dying down.

Both of those probably played the biggest roles in this. Some people though thought that the picture may have helped Link since we didn’t use the Wind Waker pictures, but I don’t think that’s really a factor since Link is known to a lot of people. But due to SFF for the next few rounds we won’t be able to see if Link got a lot stronger until Link vs. Crono or if Crono doesn’t make it that far, Link vs. Mega Man.

Analysis:

Yoshi one of the overestimated Mario characters in 2003. Even though he wasn’t in 2002 people were saying great things about Yoshi. Like would destroy Conker and easily defeat Bowser and give Cloud a run for his money. What really happen in round 1 was that Bowser destroyed Ness though it was suppose to be a close match and Yoshi couldn’t even double Conker. In round 2 Yoshi lost to Bowser in a somewhat close match and in round 3 Bowser didn’t even get 30% against Cloud. Even though we did overestimated Yoshi he’s still a strong character, he even has a chance of making it to the Sweet 16.

Ryo is from the Shenmue series and he is looking for who killed his father. Ryo if you ask me is very lucky to make it to this contest for a third time. In 2002 he got 40% against Lara which sounds okay except in the next round Lara couldn’t even get 30% against Crono. In 2003 in lost in the first round. He lost to Dante who pulled a big blowout against him which surprised many people. Now for what ever reason he’s back this year and he’s up against a character that is slightly weaker then Dante, Yoshi.

First let’s just say that Ryo is one of the weakest returning characters and beating Guybrush like that didn’t really help him much. And this is again is another simple match and making this the third match in a row that is very predictable.

Anyways Yoshi really didn’t get any new games since he’s a Mario sidekick and all of Mario’s new games really wouldn’t help Yoshi too much. Though last year Yoshi probably got SFF against Bowser making him weaker though I don’t think it was too much though I would rank Yoshi above Alucard and Dante, but we don’t have other data on Yoshi to prove how much it is.

Ryo for some strange reason went down from 2002 to 2003 which was the time Shenmue II was re-released on the Xbox. 2 things could explain this...

1. Xbox hate does exist and it hurts characters by more then we think.
2. Ryo was part of the longest path to Cloud to see what his ranking is.

1 seems more realistic, but 2 could’ve had a small factor in it as well, but not too much. It’s sad that Ryo is going to get blown away. If there was a rule where you have to know both characters to vote this match could’ve been close.

Yoshi is ranked somewhere around Dante is and if Yoshi does fail to triple him like Dante did to I may question Yoshi’s chances against Luigi next round

Three points... that's similar to the boost Samus got with Metroid Prime, once WDF is adjusted. Yes, this is probably LoI at work. Still, Alucard is the moral winner today, I say.

I don't think Bowser would get much reverse-SFF against Ganondorf to be honest. I'd expect Auron and Magus to be more susceptible to do so against Tidus and Crono respectively. I'll say it again, Magus over Crono is arguably right up there with Sephiroth over Cloud for smartest upset pick throughout the bracket.

So, why did the CATS fad die off a ton now, but not at all between 2K2 and 2K3? Especially considering all the theories that Nintendo characters will be hurt by the poll placement and site change, while cult characters will receive a big boost? Which were your theories, I believe. There's no reason for the CATS fad to have died down in my eyes, no CATS voters would change, and new voters have been indoctrinated, a few by me. CATS going down makes no sense, and considering how well Cloud vs. CATS predicted Cloud's performance last year, I fail to see why Link vs. CATS wouldn't be the same.

Again, if I have said it once I have said it five times, if you are looking for a statistical guru, do not look here. As such, I am not going to spit out numbers. But if I am not mistaken, is not a Magus/Crono match-up extrapolatedly, suppose to be like 55-45 or so? Maybe closer? If this is the case (or if it larger in favor of Crono), I cannot fathom how Magus can win. We have beat it to death, but Hero>Villain. Period. There is no documented proof of any case where this is not the case. Cloud defeated Sephiorth by some 6k votes, but even if it was only one, Hero>Villain. If anything, I see Magus being hurt by the fact that the majority of his fanbase comes from supporting him in Chrono Trigger, where... guess who... is the hero. All external factors being equal, fans of a GAME will, more times than not, prefer the hero to the villain. It is the same reason why the bad guy never wins... SPOILER

Ganon/Alucard Thoughts

Th match went as expected, though I love seeing the extrapolated standings get proven wrong. OMFG ALUCARD GAINED PERCENTAGE GANON IS NOT AS ELITE AS WE ALL THOUGHT HOW COULD THIS EVR HAPPN!!1 was the cry heard from many of the people who think that they're experts simply because they can look at a table. Reminds me of those asshats who do good in fantasy football just because they print out ESPN lists. I've won two leagues in a row without the need of such lists, and for good reason.

But anyway, to the point. Ganon wins, just like anyone with three brain cells could have guessed.

I'm late with this due to the site downtime, so this will be short.

Ryo Hazuki was beaten by Lara Croft 70-30, he plays with kittens, and he takes breaks from avenging his father to play darts. WE HAVE A WINNER, ALEX.

Honestly, most fighting games and their characters (SSBM/Ryu/etc. aside) may never do well on gamefaqs. Throw out the fodder for better characters, please. Ryo Hazuki has no business in this contest, as he is nothing but a Meat Sim on a CMP150 map every year.

Well, actually, Ryo got 40% against Lara and is from an RPG, and doesn't really do that badly in the contests. Sure, he probably doesn't deserve to be here, but there are far worse offenders, mainly Guybrush. Getting blown out by Ryu doesn't say much for him, at all.

Could you keep track of how well the brackets with each score predicts each match correctly? (i.e. the percent of brackets with 1 point that got Ganon vs. Alucard correct, as well as the percent of brackets with 0 points that got it correct)

How does the match with CATS prove that Link would beat Cloud with 53+%? He only did one percent better than Cloud did, and I'm sure the CATS fad has died off a ton.

I'm not entirely sure, but I think that would be going purely off extrapolated standings. If I recall correctly, Cloud's match against CATS last year would have indicated that he would win with about 51% of the vote. It turned out to be surprisingly accurate. He mentioned that as well.

I still don't think either one could win with 53% of the vote, though. CATS may have dropped....

I wasn't surprised at the results from Ganondorf/Alucard at all. People are talking like Alucard is suddenly WEAK. You have to take into account those characters that were slaughtered last year by Link, Cloud, and Sephiroth. Popularity isn't linear. I would think most characters reach a threshold where another character is the consensus favorite, so their performance might be stretched down for the worse.

While he may be one of the classic characters, nobody gives a damn about Pac-Man in these contests. Luckily, Luigi doesn't have too much backing, so it shouldn't be too much of a blowout. Then again, it's Pac-Man, so maybe it will.

Disclaimer: This preview series may contain mildly offensive stuff, as well as SPOILERS, not only for the characters discussed, but other stuff as well. MARIOOOOOOOO!!! *runs away*

A quick look at Luigi's history, and the loss to Squall suddenly becomes monstruously obvious. Starting out as a palette-shift for the first few years, only appearing in spin-offs for the next few, Mario is Missing, going AWOL in SMRPG and Mario 64 (the number of fake Luigi-in-SM64 codes is only rivaled by the Triforce in OoT), being an NPC in Paper Mario as well - the beginning of his "coward" persona - , some more spin-offs, Luigi's Mansion, where he begs for Mario every five seconds (thankfully, the game lasts thirty), MISSING IN SUNSHINE, then having once again the chickenwuss part in M&L. See a pattern here? Either he's just "Mario #2", as MMX would put it, or he's just not likeable. Whereas an entire era was nice enough to Yoshi, Luigi has only one game where he can be considered cool: SMB2. Oops. Way to disappoint the Luigi cult time after time, Nintendo. Because sadly, the Luigi fanbase will always be just that: a cult. It's not the Mario fanbase PLUS that cult, like the proponents for putting him over Samus suggested. And Luigi actually losing the day vote to not only Squall, but Ratchet as well, just shows the nature of this cult.

On the other side, we have Pac-Man. Oh joy. He's not strong, not at all. Being upset by Scorpion one year (and Strider > Scorpion, how I love bringing that one up) and failing to take advantage of a surprisingly weak Kefka doesn't make a good résumé. Okay, so he beat Goemon and Kyo... WHO?!? Seems only the classic fans vote for him, and that's not a mystery why. Why would ANYONE care about Pac-Man as much as for a Mario, Link or even DK? After the arcade era, he just went forgotten, despite having new games once in a while. But when it's Mario and Link who get new games, there's always a ruckus. (Zelda 10 anyone?)

Hmmkay, so for the mildly offensive stuff, it's tomorrow. I swear.

Now, on to the match itself. Well, I kinda spilled the beans yesterday: Luigi's probably going to start near 70%, then spiral down quickly, all the way to the high 50s. He does that every time, why not now?

There have been great duo's in history...Bonnie & Clyde, Simon & Garfunkel, Kerry & Edwards... But there is one duo greater than all in the world of gaming...and that is not N-Gage & Flop...it is Mario & Luigi!

The greet shirted Italian wonder has played second banana to the King of Platformers for 20 years. Wow...think of it...20 yars ago Nintendo created Mario Bros, which debuted Mario and Luigi in their own game. Course Luigi did not get more billing til forever classic Super Mario Bros, where he was enshrined as Player 2 forever in the minds of every gamer.

Luigi is fed up with being a backup...a lackey...an afterthought. He wants more games in his image. Luigi Brothers? Luigi Golf? Hmm...just dont have the same ring to them dont they? Nope. They sure dont.

But as depressed with 'Sidekick Syndrome' Luigi may be, his ailments pale to those suffered by the Icon himself. That being none other than the Pac.

I dont mean the Pack from Green Bay...I mean the Pac..the Chomper...the piece of pizza turned arcade wonder. He eats cherries and berries with the greatest of ease...and stars now in halfhearted action games that mock his legacy. Poor Pac...thou dost deserve better. And Ceej has some sort of slight against him, sticking him in 1st round matches where he is bound to lose...last year Kefka..this year Luigi.

Even PONG won a match this spring...and Pac Man is far superior to PONG in every sense of the word.

Maybe next year Pac u will get a match against perennial losers Ryo or CATS...then u will get a victory...for shame.

Hey, Luigi was pretty cool in SMB2. He wasn't the COOLEST (or even second for that matter......). But his jump PWN'D. A game leading length of 15 blocks (even more than Princess's 14 WITH floating, thank you). SMB2 may be the only game where Luigi might be above Mario. But that's not saying much since in that game:

Princess > Toad >>>>Luigi > Mario

I NEVER use Mario in that game.... except when I feel sorry for not using him. Luigi actually has some use in 2 or 3 levels....

That being said, Luigi has done nothing but go downhill from there. Nintendo has wasted his potential. I don't know what they're thinking but a 2-player Mario game is WAY overdue! Mario 64 x 4 may be a system too late for the concept. Luigi was an afterthought in Paper Mario, and Luigi's mansion is an afterthought itself.

On the other hand, I LOVE Mario & Luigi. Luigi is actually pretty hilarious in that game. You gotta love how many times Luigi is dissed in that game. "I'm sorry Mr. Green, but you're gonna have to buy your own badge" (you have to play the game to appreciate what I'm talking about). Too bad Luigi's performance in that game still won't make me vote for him.... He might have had something going for him if that game were on Gamecube though....
