Ironically, that match was the beginning of my stroke of genius. The fact that so few people had faith in SSBM was amazing.

Hmmmmm, I looked at Division 128 and saw SSBM as a no-brainer. The whole BOTTOM half of my 128 was correct. In fact I had the whole final four correct, championship included. But I didn't think that would be a hard pick. My bracket was doomed for 2 reasons alone.....

1. I knew nothing about Starcraft and treated it accordingly.

2. I changed my bracket to have Super Metroid over LttP AND Metroid Prime over Loz:WW. Everywhere that LttP went, I had SM... likewise for MP, although that one didn't make much of a difference because of Starcraft. I thought that all LoZ's base would focus on OoT.

Other than those, the mistakes I made in each of the brackets:

Division 8: Duck Hunt over DK (I sincerely liked Duck Hunt)
Division 16: Earthbound over Doom (I thought EB had more of a following because of SSBM)
Division 16: SFII over SMRPG (switched at the last minute)
Division 32-64: FFT over MGS (nail-biter, but my bracket was already doomed because I saw the mistakes of putting SM and MP over LttP and WW)
Division 128: Soul Calibur over Kingdom Hearts (same reason I put SFII over SMRPG)

And then there was Starcraft.....

But overall, 171 isn't that bad. If I would have went with my TRUE feelings with Zelda games, I would have had 179. Decent.... I won't lie about Starcraft. I had Halo going to the Sweet Sixteen. It was a learning experience to say the least. I won't rely on what I THINK other people will do when it goes directly against what I think
(LttP + WW >>>>> OoT).

I did horribly in the Spring Contest. I had a perfect 8-bit division, but beyond that...

16-bit: Chrono Trigger and LttP in the finals, LttP winning.

32-64 bit: Ocarina of Time beating FFVII, and going on to win the contest. I don't care what Ulti says, FFVII was never the ****ing "obvious choice" in that match.

128-bit: Wind Waker and FFX in the finals, FFX winning.

How do I show my bracket for the Guru contest?

Metroid Prime > Wind Waker

In the 8-bit, I missed Duck Hunt over DK, and for some strange reason, I had Tetris over Legend of Zelda. I guess I thought nostalgia would play a part in that.

In the 16-bit, my only flaw was picking Sonic 2 to beat Mario World.

I had a perfect 32/64. That division was a cakewalk for me. I didn't have any doubts about my picks, and yes, Final Fantasy VII was the obvious choice.

Division 128...That's a bit of a train wreck. To sum up my mistakes in that division, let's just say I had Kingdom Hearts over Metroid Prime in the Sweet Sixteen. I did have Super Smash Brothers Melee winning this one though, so I have at least one redeeming factor.

8 bit: Perfect.

16 bit: Perfect.

32-64 bit: Castlevania over Goldeneye was my only mistake.

128 bit: Destroyed. KoToR over Vice City, Kingdom Hearts beating Halo in the second round, had a MP vs. FFX final, with FFX winning.

I only got 152 points, because I had SMB3 beating Chrono Trigger. Ugh.

Metroid Prime > Wind Waker

Not that it matters, but I had the first three divisions perfect, and only missed matches won by SSB:M and Starcraft. But as you can imagine, that ended up being all of Division 128. And yes, FFVII was the obvious choice. Its two main characters throw down in the finals of the character contest, and a third makes the sweet 16, and yet OoT has a chance? Come on... Cloud>Link; Sephiroth>Gannondorf AND Aeris>Zelda; not to mention we spent, like, 100+ posts discussing best character to not make the tourney, and all the names that came up (with the exception of Geno and Mewtwo) were from FFVII. Why is this the case? Because we all know that the GameFaqaholics eat, sleep and breathe FFVII... it is that simple.

I was just creating an ASCII diagram demonstrating why Final Fantasy VII was the obvious choice, but I figured by the time I was finished, someone would have already stated my point! (tnote827)

I broke it down like this.

Link = LOZ + LttP + OoT + WW

The Zelda franchise's fanbase is diffused across the many games spanning across generations. Take me for example. OoT is only my THIRD favorite (soon to be fourth as of next year) Zelda game behind LttP and WW.

Cloud + Sephiroth + Aeris = FFVII

With each FF game being it's own entity, and thus each having it's own fanbase, it does not run into the same problems as the Zelda franchise. FFVII as a game is a collaboration of each of the characters that so many people worship (especially on this site). This is in ADDITION to it being a great game on it's own. This doesn't call for a blowout, but you should clearly foresee a solid FFVII victory.

One more thing about FFVII characters. What's all the hype about Vincent? Since when did he come on the level of Cloud, Sephiroth, and *sigh* Aeris? I got him, but I never thought much as him. I know he looks cool and he's got the "darkness" and "dark past" thing going for him, but he still didn't stand out to me.

My favorite FFVII character by far is RENO. Seriously. The Turks have the best theme music. Plus Reno's sarcasm is of no equal, rivaled only by Cid (who is my second favorite character). Red XIII WAS one of the better characters until you find out that he is only a KID. His demeanor changes 180 after Cosmo Canyon.

(If you guys are interest, read a fanfic called:

A MSTing of FF6 by Dr. Clayton Forrester (or Rydia Erdrick Landale).

The MSTing is done by the cast of FF7. I don't know if it's up still, or by which name. But I've seen it floating on a few different sites. It is a MUST read. You'll really love it if you're a fan of sarcasm.)

I think that Mario would beat Mega Man, Crono would beat Mario, and Mega Man would beat Crono. So, if L/S/C were eliminated, I'd go with Mario, unless he faced Crono, in which case I'd turn to Mega Man.

I agree that Mega Man wouldn't beat Mario. They are practically equal in the rankings, and they rely on much of the same fanbase. That fanbase (the old schoolers), would appear to be more devoted to Mario, and that's what would tip the match in his favor. However, Crono, with a good bit of the Square vote as well as some of the old school vote, plus the Mario anti-vote, should be able to take the plumber down. But Crono can't beat Mega Man, who has no anti-votes, so Mega Man could still win the contest.

All of those factors are small, but when the combatants are statistically equal, they matter.

Okay, Final Fantasy VII characters aside (since they're the obvious choices), who else would have the potential to do the best in this contest who has yet to be in? By the way, does anyone else think Zidane would actually do better than Vivi if he were in the contest? The main characters in a given game usually do the best. Plus, if Tidus is stronger than Auron here, I see no reason to believe why Zidane wouldn't be stronger than Vivi.

Extrapolated rankings aside, you can look at a common opponent in 2003: Sephiroth.

Round 4: Sephiroth defeats Mario, who had 38.40% of the votes.
Round 5: Sephiroth defeats Mega Man, who had 38.82% of the votes.

Check this out, too...despite the huge boost in vote totals between the contests, Mega Man still had more votes against Sephiroth in 2002 (48,185) than Mario did against him in 2003 (47,458). Granted, Kingdom Hearts had come out by then, so that hurt Mario's chances to equal it...but then Mega Man still got more votes against Sephiroth in the next round (48,204) than Mario did again.



With all of that said, it's still very hard for me not to pick Mario, although I believe I would, considering Mega Man's my favorite character.

Division 8:
(1) Duck Hunt lost to Donkey Kong...you can almost forgive it though, it was so close

Division 16:
(1) LoZ:LttP lost to Chrono Trigger, which screws me over in the next round. To be fair though, I knew the winner of this match would get to the championship match.

Division 32-64:
(1) Perfect Dark lost to C:SotN. I'll admit, I was biased; Perfect Dark is my favorite game ever, but I still thought rationally enough to know it could go either way. I sided with my favorite and hoped for the best...and it didn't happen.

Division 128:
(1) Halo lost to Starcraft; damn damn damn, this was one of maybe two matches I switched a week after the brackets opened up. It doesn't matter though, because...
(2) Kingdom Hearts lost to Starcraft. The hype of the game, boards, and brother's friends all encouraged me to put KH over Halo, when it turned out to be Starcraft over KH. Whoa. That's not all though...
(3) LoZ:WW lost to Starcraft, which just shocked me, bad. There went down my division winner, which leads to...
(4) Starcraft lost to SSB:M, a match where I had no chance of winning. For all the success Starcraft had, I almost wish it woulda won, but I'm glad the better game won instead.

Final Four:
(1) Super Mario Bros. 3 lost to Chrono Trigger, a match that I knew would go to the winner of CT/LoZ:LttP, and the extrapolated ratings and common opponents would prove it.



Total Score: 151/192. If LoZ:LttP woulda won, I woulda jumped up to 175. Regardless, I'm proud of my picks because they were all respectable; the biggest blow-out of a match I picked wrong on was Starcraft/KH, where KH lost with 46.43%.

I slept through the discussion on who takes the tourney if we eliminate Link, Cloud and Sephiroth, so here is my two cents. I think Mario beats Megaman, Megaman beats Crono, and Crono beats Mario. Yeah, how's that for one f-ed up battle triangle? So really, it would all come down to who got the last match-up between the three for who wins the whole thing. I guess I may see Samus being able to sneak into the discussion, but I personally cannot believe she could take down any of those three gentlemen.

When you look at extrapolated standings Mega Man is roughly a percent ahead of Mario and Crono. That can definitely be overcome, but when you look at the past two years Mega Man has consistently ranked ahead of both of them. As far as the standings go Mega Man will probably remain the top in the pack. You could say that Mario might have suffered some sort of anti-voting possibly from beating Crono in the way he did, that would make it a tad closer, but I wouldn't put a whole lot of stock in it.

Earlier HaRRich had did a little comparison between Mario and Mega Man against Sephiroth. They both faced the him right after each other. Mega Man did do better, so if you don't want to look at the extrapolated standings just look at how each did against the same opponent.

So far Mega Man has the upperhand over Mario (Crono). He also is one of those people who doesn't come for one of the two big companies here (Nintendo and Square) but at the same time doesn't have any sort of substantial hate base at all. While Mario has anti-votes against him in many matches (Shadow), Mega Man does not. So in a match between the two if given a reason people could anti-vote Mario in a match.

To close it all off, I'm one to say Mega Man will be getting some sort of boost this coming contest. Whether it be enough for him to win or not we'll eventually be seen, but if this match were to take place say... next year. I would have to put Mega Man in my bracket over Mario, and that goes for Crono as well. Especially since I believe he'll be getting a boost to further himself from these two even more than he already is. It'd be a very close match, no doubt, and like I said before I'd hate to them go at it...

Although something to think about, if you believe that Mega Man would beat Crono, no question, and remember before the clutch move was pulled Mario was down by 900.

Its not crazy, in fact its quite plausible. Sephiroth will never win because on a SFF he always loses to Cloud. Its the same reason Mario will always beat Bowser, Crono will always beat Magus, Link will always beat Ganondorf. Cloud is the hero, Seph is the villain, it'll never happen.

As for Crono/Mario 3, Mario has lost his ground this time. The site design on the front ruins any chance of a true casual vote in each match, and that hurts Mario.

I've just heard the reasoning that because Sephiroth lost to him once that he'll always lose in a match between the two. Simply throwing someone like that aside could be a fatal mistake. He's more than capable of gather some 2500 votes off of Cloud from the previous year to win a match. Not only that but should he win that'll screw everyone over who had Cloud winning the match.

I'm just saying both of them can happen, but after two losses to Mario people will pick Crono, and after one small loss to Cloud people will continue to pick him "because he won last year". I'm picking Cloud myself, but wouldn't be surprised at all if Sephiroth managed to win. I'd be disappointed but not shocked.

Unfortunately, there probably will be. They're a lot alike, and they come from the same series and era, so I would imagine they'd share a lot of the same fanbase. Coming from an unbiased standpoint, Squall will be lucky to get 30%.

Of course, I'm hoping that many of these fans realize that Squall is the superior character and he can get a little reverse SFF to make a respectable showing. Not enough to win, but maybe to avoid getting doubled at least.

Speaking of Knuckles.....

Where exactly does Knuckles stand in terms of popularity of Sonic characters? Has there been a poll on the Sonic characters' popularity? Is he THAT much under Sonic and Shadow? He has undeniably been SCREWED in each of the contests. We haven't been able to view his real strength yet. He has beaten Yuna though, so he IS more deserving than being sacrificed for Snake fodder every year.

I know in the Sonic 3 era, Knuckles rivaled Sonic in popularity, even more than Shadow in my opinion because he wasn't just a rip-off. He really WAS Sonic's rival. If Knuckles really HAS fallen off, I really pray that it wasn't because of people who are so immature that they didn't like him because his music was themed on Hip-Hop in the SA series (IF YOU DON'T BELIEVE ME, READ UP ON THE SA2 BOARD!!!!). Hip-hop is my #1 genre, and though I admit that Knux music wasn't the BEST, it was OKAY. Some were actually quite catchy. SA2's soundtrack is very underrated.... I digress though.

BTW, I just whipped out SA2:B for the hell of it. I swear if Sonic Team did a game based solely on the Sonic and Shadow levels, speed and freestyle gameplay included (sorry SH), we'd have a different opinion on Sonic.....

Summer 2004 Contest Stats: N/A

Going back to the spring contest: I had a perfect upper half of the bracket. I missed PD vs. C:SotN. I haven't played either game, so I was going on what I'd heard. I had Starcraft winning round one, but then I had it losing to KH, which I subsequently had losing to WW, which I had winning the division over SSBM. My only other mistake, which cost the most points, was picking OoT to take it all. If I had chosen FF7 instead, I would have had 177 points. If I had also chosen SSBM to win the division over WW, I would have tied for first place, but of course I didn't, so I don't really have anything to brag about, other than getting almost all of the nailbiters right (DK/DH, MGS/FFT, SC/Halo, etc.).

On another subject, when people talk about not wanting repeat winners, why has nobody mentioned the spring contest? I know games !=‚ characters, but if there are large numbers of anti-repeat votes, why did FF7 easily win? Since there's an even shorter period of time between the spc2k4 and sc2k4 than there was between sc2k3 and spc2k4, the likelihood of voting demographics changing significantly decreases. Cloud should handle Link without too much trouble, though probably not as easily as FF7 handled OoT.

I think Link has a pretty good chance.

Anti-repeat votes are extremely overrated. Link didn't suffer from them in a single match last summer, or if he did, it wasn't noticeable. Characters aren't going to receive boosts from the hype of a game that hasn't been released yet. The picture factor is only relevant in matches between obscure characters (such as Vyse-Laharl).

The problem with that logic is that Cloud only has FFVII (and Kingdom Hearts, with a less than bit role). Link has many, many games that span almost two decades. I grew up playing the original Legend of Zelda, and that is why I like him. Those in their mid teens probably grew up with Ocarina of Time, and those in their late teens probably grew up with Link to the Past. The point being that Link has appeal to all of the ages, because we can directly relate to a different game than came out and dominated during our beginning gaming stage. I personally did not enjoy Majora's Mask or Wind Waker (though admittedly I only got a few hours into both), but that will not stop me from liking Link. Cloud has FFVII. Best. Game. Ever. or not, if you did not like FFVII, he has no other way to appeal to you. Not to mention he never had a tv show, nor was he given away as a toy in cereal. Link v. Cloud; looks aside, Link pwns the casual vote, however with the site change will there be enough of it to make up those couple thousand votes? My bracket obviously hopes so...

Anti-repeat votes are existent whether you want to believe so or not. To call them non-existent is just ignorant. A non-factor, perhaps, but not non-existent. A couple buddies and I are voting for Sephiroth solely because we do not want to see Cloud win again. Five votes will not send Cloud home, but I also highly doubt we will be the only five people voting for Sephiroth for the sole purpose of seeing Cloud not win it all.

Hey, the hype for John Romero helped him out a lot, you can't deny that.

Since TOS is still going fairly strong, how well do you guys think Lloyd would do if he entered the contest assuming TOS can keep up the pace for a little while longer?

I would probably place him around the level of KOS-MOS. Maybe a little lower. Both are characters in Namco RPGS. Xenosaga is on the PS2, but Lloyd is the main character.

I'd say Lloyd is at best as strong as, say, Alucard, and at worst as strong as Vyse. ToS also has two fan favorites that COULD make it in to 2k5 in Kratos and Sheena.

Going back to the Sephiroth conversation earlier, there are 3 factors that should cause his match with Cloud to at least be closer than last year, and possibly win.

-Anti-champion votes. Not very numerous, but they are there.
-Kingdom Hearts Factor fading. Cloud clearly received more of a boost, being a playable character, while Sephiroth was an optional boss. Who knows how much their parts in KH have been forgotten by now, so this could play a small part or a large one considering how many of the votes are tied to KH.
-The loss of 17,000 voters due to the new layout. Assuming CjayC doesn't move the poll around again, this should hurt all main characters against their villain/supporting character opponents.

If anybody runs the risk of having his part in Kingdom Hearts forgotten, it's Sephiroth.

Only because one would assume Cloud has more to lose. I'd say Sephiroth would be more prone to suffer from a loss in the KHF (though I don't think there will be one) because he's merely an optional boss.

Possibly. If it were to fade in a bigger manner it would obviously show more on Cloud than it would Sephiroth. As Cloud's boost was obviously greater than Sephiroth's. Not that I think Cloud will lose to him.

Sephiroth being an optional boss is why he gained less, since not everyone fought him, but when considering how much each of them will lose after a year that isn't relevant. Since every KH-Sephiroth voter will have fought him. If his fight wasn't anything special, then he could lose more, but someone else will have to discuss that as I haven't played the game.

Sephiroth was a great boss fight in KH, and the remixed One-Winged Angel only added to the effect.

What I don't understand is why Squall only improved slightly more than Sephiroth did. He had the largest role of any of the FF characters in Kingdom Hearts, and I would think he'd have the most room for improvement. Yes, I know his name is different, but Yuffie does call him Squall at one point and it tells you his real name in his profile.

That's because Wind Waker hasn't been nearly as well-received as the previous Zelda games. Some don't like the cel-shading, some don't like the boring sailing, some don't like the laughable difficulty level, some don't like the dull Triforce hunt near the end, and many don't like any of those.

but still, then link should have gone down, unless windwaker both got and nullified equal votes to keep link the same. and that's kind of hard to believe, for me at least, and for link to go down, people would have had to not like windwaker enough to vote against him, and I don't know how many people would have done that either. for him to increase though, all what would have had to happen was for him to be introduced to new gamers with Windwaker. that's not that impossible either.

Another thing to note is that a Cloud-Sephiroth match is more likely to have anti-champion votes in it than the Link-Cloud match did. Most voters this time will be a fan of both characters, and may want to give the other a chance to win, whereas last year it was a Nintendo-Square match.

If we're assuming that voters are smart, and I think that's a bad assumption, then they will probably also realize that Cloud has a better chance of taking down Link than Sephiroth does.

There are still people that believe in anti-repeat votes? Dangit. If anything they can easily be countered by the extra bracket vote.

In order to have an improvement, a character needs not only to have a new game, but to NOT have a big library. Three games, tops. This explains why Samus didn't get anywhere as much of a boost as Alucard or the FF characters. That's why Link and Mario essentially didn't budge.

Is the outcome of this match really in any doubt? I'm highly skeptical that an occasionally recurring character from a semi-niche Konami series can stand up to the villain from Nintendo's most beloved (yes, I'd say Zelda's even more popular than Mario.)

OMG Shemue=instant win.

Match #4 Preview:

If Luigi is really as weak as the extrapolated rankings suggest, then he'll have a helluva time with ol' Pac. I'd be surprised if he got more than 55%.

Well, I have a theory to help us pinpoint how much supposed factors affected Cloud vs. Mario and Link vs. Sephiroth...here goes:

What if Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles had the same proportion of strength both years?

2003:
Sonic - 34.92%
Knuckles - 26.47%
Tails - 20.41%

2002:
Sonic - 41.05%
Knuckles - 27.68%
Tails - 20.74%

Now, I say Knuckles is the most reliable to start off with, as he wasn't in the North or West divisions in 2002. So, assuming Link had the same popularity both years, Knuckles has 95.63% of his popularity of 2002, or 104.6% for vice versa. So, let's multiply Sonic's 34.92% and Tails' 20.41% by 1.046...

Sonic's theoretical 2002 value should be 36.53%, while for Tails it should be 21.35%. Now, if you count Cloud's underperformance against Mario (due to the infamous "clutch" move), you realize that it all fits together. Tails goes from 20.74% up to the theoretical 21.35%. This also supports even more strongly that Auron didn't underperform against Cloud. With that in mind, Cloud should've defeat Mario with about 51.5% without any of Mario's extra help.

So....that bumps up Cloud up to about 38.5% in the standings. Now, with Sonic having an expected 36.53% against Link, divide that by how much Samus (= Sonic) lost to Sephiroth...WTF, 38.6%. So, if those Sonic proportions were true, and there were no inaccuries in the calculations, that means Cloud and Sephiroth were almost exactly equal in popularity in 2002!

*imagines a 50/50 Cloud vs. Sephiroth this year* Aw, I hope so. :[

So, who will win between Viewtiful Joe and Dante? Tails and Ratchet are both weak, so I know that they will both lose their first matches. But, I really am stumped on who's better between Joe and Dante.

I just thought of a new point while I was countering an arguement against maplejet in another thread about the Master Chief/Frog match, one that I don't believe has been discussed yet. Using the powers of copying-n-pasting, and even a lil' editing...




I don't think this should be worth the trouble. Frog will beat Master Chief. Remember, Aeris had more than 60% on MC last year, and she's not even the main character of FF7

Aeris is to FF7 as Frog is to CT; they're both side-kicks from Square RPG's, and their only difference is that Aeris's strength has been tested. With that said...

Spring Contest Championship: Final Fantasy 7 defeats Chrono Trigger, who had 41.76% of the votes.

Summer Contest, Second Round: Aeris defeats Master Chief, who had 39.85% of the votes.

Suddenly, with this "evidence" (it's flawed and not exactly precise, but it's a decent guide-line), this match could be much closer than you give it credit for, ESPECIALLY if my theory about the X-Box hate being largely diminished is true. If Halo was able to rank #10 in the Spring Contest, then Master Chief cannot help but shed at least a lil' bit of that hate, too.

I still think Frog will win, but I fully expect Master Chief to get at least 43% on him, and heck, he might just even win.

I don't think there was any massive X-Box hatred to begin with. Whatever was then is still now. In fact, I think Halo would've performed just as well in a Spring 2003 contest...Master Chief didn't match up to his game because he's another Gordon Freeman.

I've always had Frog reaching the Sweet 16 myself and while I can't see Frog being as strong as Aeris I couldn't imagine Frog being weaker than MC.

Also, Dante shouldn't really have much trouble getting to the Sweet 16 unless Joe proves to be quite the competitor.

MC has a big anti-vote base that anti-votes him against the middle to low tier characters but not against the big guns. Just like Mario.

If you don't believe in either of these, then you're saying Servbot could beat half of the field in 2002 and Felix could beat half of the field in 2003.

I've always been of the opinion that Frog will be roughly equal to Aeris. CT may not be quite the powerhouse that FF7 is, but Frog is the 3rd best representative from his game while Aeris is not. Now don't get me wrong, I love Aeris, but we all know full well that fan-favorite > heroine... just look at Auron and Yuna... then consider that there are two heroines, and the one in the contest is only in half the game... I think Frog has a decent chance at making the Elite Eight, AND I think that a match between him and Aeris would go in the favor of Aeris, AND I have a hard time believing that Aeris could take down Solid Snake... got that? Oooh, you want reasoning for such blasphemy? Well let's just say it is a hunch, as the only thing in there that I can truly defend is the Aeris defeating Frog heads up, because FFVII>Chrono Trigger, so we know where the loyalty of the Square nuts lies. It is just a gut feeling that Frog can take out Solid Snake... let's hope it's some serious foreshadowing, as opposed to indegestion.

I've always been of the opinion that Frog will be roughly equal to Aeris. CT may not be quite the powerhouse that FF7 is, but Frog is the 3rd best representative from his game while Aeris is not. Now don't get me wrong, I love Aeris, but we all know full well that fan-favorite > heroine... just look at Auron and Yuna... then consider that there are two heroines, and the one in the contest is only in half the game... There is fair enough evidence that another FF7 character could do better.

My opinion was that Aeris was the third best representative of FF7...

FF7's top three reps: Cloud, Sephiroth, Aeris.
CT's to three reps: Crono, Magus, Frog.

Looks and seems simple enough to me; the only one who could compare is Tifa, but she's only got two big reasons why she could compare. I also doubt that Frog is much cooler/popular of a third rep in his game than Aeris, from my personal experience. Of course, the pics would not help Frog one bit in the casual vote, either.

I'd say Aeris has the advantage without thinking twice about it.

Actually, I am saying that if Master Chief didn't have Gordon Freeman syndrome (i.e. has some sort of development or takes part in the story), Master Chief could probably BEAT Aeris.

Okay, I don't know how much MC gets involved in the story, but what I've played (Co-op story mode and 4-played) MC is nothing more than Gordon Freeman with a Storm Trooper (Star Wars) suit on.

I absolutely hate that argument. The absolute majority has gotten Vincent by now, there is no way the people that got him are any in sort of miniority in this day and age. Final Fantasy VII hasn't been on the top of the FAQ list for so long and people just somehow miss him, people don't vote for Final Fantasy VII as the "Best. Game. Ever." and not have a clue who Vincent is. Sure he's an optional character, but I really don't see that affecting him whenever he should enter the contest. By that time he'll already be far more exposed than he is already is.

Again, to make the comparison more clear, Vincent is set to star in his own game, and has a bigger role in AC than in FF7, as well as a role in BC, I'm sure. Exactly. Magus is an optional party character, like Vincent, but unlike Vincent Magus is a major character before then. The whole beginning of the game revolves around him. OTOH, you can play through Final Fantasy VII without ever hearing of Vincent, and many no doubt do just that.

One would think that most around here have heard of Vincent. And I think there's a good shot he'd be more popular than Aeris. However, it isn't for sure. Also, I could see Red XIII, Barret, and Tifa being more popular than Vincent.

Of course, as many have stated, Vincent is going to have more opportunity to grow in the future.

You don't even need to look at the faqs to get Vincent, if you have any curiosity at all you'll most likely get him on your first playthrough. He could beat Aeris in theory, he's just as well known IMO, but once again, death = undeserved popularity(not to say Aeris was bad but overated definitely)

You know, I totally agree.... I stated it before too. I really don't see what's the big deal about Vincent. Yeah, he looked cool but he was and IS an afterthought to me in FF7. When I think about FF7, he is the absolute LAST playable character I think of, including Cait Sith. He is not essential to the story, doesn't say much, and doesn't do much to make him stick. And don't give me Lucretia.... the game hardly develops that. IMHO, give me ANY other character over Vincent (Cloud, Tifa, Barrett, Cid, Aeris, Red XIII, Seph, Reno, Elena, Rude......)

In fact, in terms of mysterious FF dudes with dark, painful pasts, give me Shadow over Vincent ANY day.....

Vincent's not so bad. His limit break is a bit different from most everyone else's, which makes him kinda fun to play. I never had a problem with him inflicting enough damage to earn his keep, either.

All my characters are lv 99. NOBODY has a problem inflicting damage!!!! That's redundant though... :-\ He's not a bad character at all, but I find it hard to believe that he can even be close to being the THIRD most popular FF7 character. The SECOND most popular hero?

Switching from that though.... I think Master Chief will give a solid performance. Do any people even LIKE Crash? His claim-to-fame is ONE good commercial... That's it. Other than that, his games are a rip-off. I remember in one magazine article with the makers of Crash Nitro Kart COMPLAINING that too many people were ripping off original ideas.

I really do think that the anti-XBox hate is decreasing. Hell, I want to get an X-Box in the near future, if only for Ninja Gaiden. With an increased library, the X-Box is far superior to the PS2 as a system. The only reason I DIDN'T want an X-Box is because it didn't have any games I want. Nintendo will always have a niche in the industry due to it's strong franchises. When it comes down to it though, if X-Box had Square-Enix's backing among others:

X-Box > PS2, hands down.

Back to Master Chief Vs. Crash.... Master Chief got 40% on Aeris. Crash got almost 40% on KOS-MOS. BUT

Aeris >> KOS-MOS

I don't see why Master Chief should have any problem in this matchup.

MC should have no trouble at all with Crash. Crash isn't an insanely popular character, and he hasn't had any decent games in a long time. I'll be voting for Crash because I actually did enjoy some of his games (and I don't own an X-Box, but I don't anti-vote the X-Box), but I know there won't be too many voting for Crash for the same reason. Felix, on the other hand, had had his game just released, and it was an RPG. It may have been on the GBA, but it was still an RPG. GBA games may not garner as many votes as the big boys, but being an RPG certainly helps. I'm willing to bet there were more GS fans than people thought. If Felix were in the contest this year, I'd say he'd perform comparably to Crash, maybe a little bet better, now that GS is no longer new. MC should beat Crash somewhere around 68-32.

There's nothing wrong with my OOT review, hence why I've been ignoring your e-mails.

Actually, Ulti, you said that OoT is a 3D version of LttP, which is clearly wrong. The differences between the two are so huge that they're practically in two different series.

Well, I've played Final Fantasy VII a large amount myself, by no means one play through of 60 hours. In particular on your FFVIII review I thought you went a little to much into Squall and the constant reminder that, "Hey Squall! You suck!" but I did agree with you on many occasions during that review. I don't know that I'd score it that low, but you did manage to get your opinions across for the most part.

Well, there were multiple reasons why it was such a shock. Everyone had such high expectations of Luigi as possibly being as popular as his brother, but he was unproven. He was supposed to be a great upset pick over Samus, for goodness sake. That obviously wasn't the case.

Plus, we had no idea what a boon Kingdom Hearts would be for the Final Fantasy characters that had cameos in it. Squall (er..."Leon") was able to redeem himself in the eyes of many who hadn't liked him before with his role.

Also, I think Squall's performance against Solid Snake had been underestimated. Jill Valentine was supposed to have a great shot at beating him last year, and even if he could get past her, he didn't have a chance against Luigi. The strange thing is, he probably would've beaten the green plumber even without KHF.

However, Sora has nothing of the sort he can benefit from. It would be a huge shock if he were to reach the Sweet Sixteen. Jill would have to have a HUGE dropoff and Hayabusa be barely strong enough to beat her, or he would've had to suffer MASSIVE SFF against Aeris last summer. Neither are very likely.

yeah, to some degree I think those characters should be let in, because they are in games too, just because they come second to gaming doesn't have to mean they're not allowed. They wouldn't really upset the big guys, so if their games were good enough, they should be in. I guess a better place to guage their strength, or thier game strength would be the summer contest if any of them make it in, if they did well, then their characters could be in the game without really throwing the summer contest off.

this isn't exactly contest related, but it could be relevant in the future for the contest, and that's today's poll, so far it seems that the ds has more fans than the psp, those other two polls supported that as well. So if the ds and/or psp has good games could they help any of the big characters in the contest, or get some stronger new ones in?

also, luigi vs yoshi I could see going in Luigi's favor, just because he just seems more important to the Mario series, yoshi is better than him, but I wouldn't be entirely shocked if Luigi wins.

Luigi's always in Mario's shadow too. That doesn't help him at all, and his recent personality change doesn't exactly have everyone thrilled. He was awesome on Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga as the more cowardly, unknown sidekick but he could win the match. I don't see him doing it though.

I haven't even really given it any thought to be honest. I picked Yoshi right when I saw the match would take place.

KOS-MOS vs. Ryu from Street Fighter

This won't even be remotely close. Ryu is even going to give Sonic a run for his money in the Sweet 16, much less have any trouble at all removing KOS-MOS in round 1. He was able to rack up 42.74% against Solid Snake, to top it all off he ranked 18th in the extrapolated standings. Furthermore, Ryu knocked off Dante with 54% and Dante ranked 21st. =p Then of course you see KOS-MOS down there at 33rd and it isn't to convincing.

Plus, he's freakin' Ryu from Street Fighter. No way is he going to lose to someone like KOS-MOS.

I obviously choose, Ryu.

Jak vs. Ness (coin-flip, I know)

It's pretty much exactly that. I've gone with Jak initially and stuck with it for basically the entire month but now I'm almost wanting to put Ness at a victory. The way I thought about it is Jak may be more known, his games sold more, and his face on more commercials but do the people at GameFAQs really care more about him than Ratchet? I know I think he's by far the better of the two but I'm a little uncertain whether or not the people actually do.

In short, I'm torn but will probably side with Jak.

Vivi vs. DK

Vivi could do nothing and flop or he could manage to take out DK. Either way this one is only a point, like many others, but while DK is usually capable of getting to round 2 he's had far to many close encounters with people he shouldn't. He's not reliable by any stretch of the word and this is Vivi from Final Fantasy.

I chose Vivi.

Shadow vs. Tidus

This is another one where I've rethought my position recently. I had Shadow for the majority of July but recently switched over to Tidus, when you look at the possibility of him really getting a good chunk of Mario anti-votes and the fact I doubt he could manage to come within 1600 votes of Ganondorf it's all to much to go against Tidus. Like Leonheart has said, it may sound wrong because it's Tidus. You wouldn't expect someone like him to be strong, but he has proven to be pretty consistent in both contests and is obviously here for the long run.

I chose Tidus.

I have Ryu over KOS-MOS, too...but Samus surely faced some SFF against Link last year, thus bringing down KOS-MOS's ranking, too. I agree that Ryu should win, but KOS-MOS will likely do better than we'd believe right now.

I think that KOS-MOS is around the level of, say, Kirby, maybe a lil' lower than that, but the SFF that Samus suffered at the hands of Link took her down and out of the ratings...

...looking at the extrapolated ratings, seeing as how Kirby is one spot below Knuckles, does anybody think KOS-MOS would do better against Knuckles than Yuna did last year? Yuna's not incredibly strong, so I think KOS-MOS could probably equal her performance and add a percent or two to it if she faced Knuckles, but she surely wouldn't beat him.

Samus suffering SFF, sure, but I don't think it was anything significant at all. That could almost say that she suffered to the point of being stronger than Mega Man. Again, I doubt it was anything significant, but we'll find out this year when she goes up against Cloud.

I do believe where she's at is pretty much where she should be. Maybe a little higher, but not as high as Kirby.

SC2K4 FIRST DRAFT - PROLOGUE

Disclaimer: ...hey, why do I need a disclaimer here? It's the damn prologue!

Yes, yes, I know, the old formula was kinda informative and subject to well-within-the-TOS debate. But with characters it's a different story... you just can't compare two characters objectively like you would games, except for extrapolated standings, BOP results and game sales. The latter is generally irrelevant - although Starcraft may have won three matches on that alone - and if you told me Starcraft was going to win two matches, let alone three, last March, I would've suggested to leave the hallucinogenous substances a rest - oh, where was I again? Whatever. Although, the important thing is, the new formula will allow me to have a field day the day before Shadow's match while cutting the flames in half.

Besides, there are all but ten matches that present any interest in this bracket. The other 53 are absolutely worthless to analyze, and these select ten already were to the point of overkill. So why not take the junk and have some fun with it, and look at the closer bouts in a way that couldn't be repetitive?

But what IS this new formula? Simple... there is NONE. No more skeleton that can't ****ing move a finger. Just random stuff about the characters, loads of references to all sorts of stuff and things like that. A sort of Steve Illumina Speaks rip-off, yet at the same time worlds away from it, if you will. The odds of either stealing (read: guessing) the other's material outside of a certain Yoshi/Ryo match are about the same as Gordon Freeman ever winning a match. (And yes, there will be Gordon cracks too.)

Of course, there WILL be more serious parts, with the usual BOP numbers and extrapolated standings comparisons. Rest assured, I'm not letting these take a complete backseat, unless I'm in the middle of a verbal roll, and I already have some ready.

It starts... tomorrow! (Er, today, since it's past midnight over here.)

I don't think there was much SFF in Link/Samus. But Super Metroid vs LTTP? Yeah, I'll blame that BS on SFF. I've grown to love the hell out of SM now that I've been playing it through again.

Samus VS Crono would be a match I would be willing to petition for next year. Right now, I'd say Crono, but I think this time next year would be Samus's year to beat Crono, with MP2 and all.

Master Moltar is right. we are all discussed out.

so here - here is another point to discuss. which Division do you think will be the easiest Division to predict? i was taking one last look at the bracket and thought, man - that Hyrule Division really is predictable. if it wasn't for Mario vs. Crono, i'd bet that it was the most predictable Division yet. actually, it still might be the most predictable Division yet.

and that got me thinking - what were the easiest and hardest Divisions to predict in the past three contests? i kinda figured the 128-Bit Division from the Spring Contest had to be the toughest Division to predict. but as for the easiest......... i woulda stuck with the Spring Contest and said the 8-Bit Division was easier than any other of the past three divisions.

Through great Luck (and a bit of skill) ULTI pounded me in the Spring Contest!!

so, this is what i did: i took the percentage of brackets with the correct prediction for all fifteen matches in each division and averaged them out to get the average match prediction for each division. this is what i came up with in order from most difficult Division to predict to the easiest Division to predict:

1) 48.40% - Spring 2K4: 128-Bit - no surprise here. on average, more people got matches wrong in the 128-Bit Division than they got right. Starcraft and SSBM really screwed everyone over. (well, everyone but Ulti. =P )

2) 57.91% - Summer 2K2: South (Link's Division) - this one i wasn't expecting to have been so difficult to predict because Link was the obvious pick to win the whole division. but, i guess hardly anyone foresaw Scorpion and Jill doing so well.

3) 63.43% - Summer 2K2: East (Crono's Division) - the only huge surprise here (at the time) was Crono coming out of nowhere to beat both Lara and Snake.

4) 64.04% - Summer 2K3: West (Megaman's Division) - i was a bit surprised that this was the toughest division to predict last contest, but apparently, not many people expected Megaman to do so well, even though he was the board's favorite.

5) 65.16% - Summer 2K3: East (Cloud's Division) - my only perfect Division last Summer, but again, not many people expected Sonic or Zero to do so well. however, Cloud was the easy choice to win the Division.

6) 65.76% - Summer 2K3: South (Sephiroth's Division) - somehow, it was slightly easier than the West and the East, but i'd be willing to bet that if Crono had beaten Mario, the average prediction percentage would have dropped enough to make this the toughest Division of the contest.

7) 65.92% - Summer 2K2: North (Mario's Division) - Alucard, Morrigan, and Aya Brea surprised a lot of people, but most people figured the Division final would be Mario over Cloud.

8) 67.27% - Summer 2K3: North (Link's Division) - again, virtually everyone knew Link would beat Samus in the Division final (72.17% had Link winning th Division). it would have wound up much higher, had it not been for Magus, Ganondorf, Squall, and KOS-MOS all doing better than expected.

9) 70.68% - Summer 2K2: West (Sephiroth's Division) - *blink*blink* what? the Division with Samus vs. Sonic and Sephiroth vs. Megaman was the easiest Summer Contest Division to predict? ......... well, only two of the first round matches were under 80%. and the lowest second round percentage was 58% (Samus over Ryu). that, and Sephiroth was the favorite to win the Division. i guess it wasn't that tough.

10) 71.94% - Spring 2K4: 16-Bit Division - yeah, we all figured that the 128-Bit Division was the toughest Division ever. we also knew that other than that Division, the rest of the Spring Contest was easier to predict than the Summer Contest. well, we were right. this was the toughest of the three easy Spring Divisions, thanks to LTTP vs. FF6, LTTP/FF6 vs. CT, SF2 vs. SMRPG, and EB vs. Doom all being tough to call, especially only a third of the brackets having the right Division winner.

11) 75.20% - Spring 2K4: 8-Bit Division - well, i'll be. the 8-Bit Division wasn't quite the easiest Division to predict. although, there were only a whole three matches with under 70% of the brackets right: PS vs. Contra, SMB3 vs. FF (!!), and SMB3 winning the Division.

12) 75.32% - Spring 2K4: 32/64-Bit Division - believe it or not, this was the easiest Division to predict. 9 of the 15 matches had at least 78.89% of the brackets. and only one match in the whole Division had less than half of the brackets (Pokemon vs, Xenogears with 48.2%).

Ryu over Samus is far more likely than the Chief over Solid Snake. There's a remote possibility that Ryu will win, while there's absolutely no chance at all of the Chief winning. As for divisions...

Hyrule: Looking back on last year's Summer Contest, Link's division will do very well. There aren't really any tough matches for the average joe, besides perhaps Mario vs. Crono and Luigi vs. Yoshi. Link always helps to pull up the prediction percentage, and the Hyrule bracket will be no exception.

Chaos: Looking at all of the matches in here, especially the Kingdom Losers four pack, it looks like this would be a tough division, but it seems to me that the characters that are likely to be strong are actually mainstream characters, so most gamers will again, do quite well. Samus vs. Sonic might confuse a few people, but 2k2 will probably mean that Samus gets picked by a lot more people than Sonic.

Midgar: Not a terribly difficult division, with the exception of Cloud vs. Sephiroth. Other than that, people will score a ton of points, but that match will be what brings them down. An all FF Final Four and six FF characters in the Elite Eight will reduce the damage, though, so this will likely not be the worst division.

20XX: A division with Tommy Vercetti and Master Chief? Ouch, that's going to destroy a lot of brackets. This bracket has a ton of over-estimated characters, including Solid Snake and probably Liquid Snake as well. It would be fascinating and depressing to find out how many people had a Vercetti vs. Master Chief final.

Hardest to easest

20XX Division (Vercetti and Master Chief are fan fav. but they won't win and like last year Mega Man will be underestimated)
Midgar Division (The only reason that this division is higher then Chaos is once Cloud vs. Sephiroth happens many brackets depend on both, but only one will get out)
Chaos Division (With the 4-pack of doom that will break a lot of brackets, but the rest looks easy)
Hyrule Division (Easy, Easy, Easy the only hard matches should be Yoshi vs. Luigi and maybe Mario vs. Crono, but more and more brackets are going towards Mario so it might not be such an upset if Mario wins

I would really be surprised if Sonic wasn't the bracket favorite to win this division. Sure, Samus is the obvious choice on the board, but a lot of bracket makers weren't here in 2002 and know nothing of the first Sonic-Samus match.

I'm just wondering - if instead Sonic had edged out Samus in 2002 by a couple of dozen votes and proceeded to lose to Sephiroth by the same amount, how many of you would have chosen Sonic to win the Chaos Division this year? I'd probably still pick with Samus for the same reason I chose her in the first place - Sonic has likely only decreased in popularity, while Samus has likely increased due to Metroid Prime and Metroid Fusion.

Considering the margin of difference was so small, I don't think it would've mattered who actually won between Sonic and Samus. It's the fact that it was so close and everything else that happened afterward that has made Samus the favorite.

Samus totally owned Sonic in indirect comparisons last year (Samus doing more than decent against Link, Sonic being totally overwhelmed - and almost doubled - by Cloud). That's a big sign of Metroid Prime giving a big hand if you ask me.

But still, my guess would be that Sonic will be the overall favorite to win the division, not unlike Snake was both years.

Lettuce jokes have become common on our beloved Board 8. However, The Best Character Ever (TM) isn't the only one to be afflicted by being too vegetable-looking in these contests; as a matter of fact, if SotN wasn't CJayC's favorite game, odds are, SMB2 would be.

Of course, I'm talking about the ever-so-grammatically-challenged CATS. He has all but five lines in the entire game (and to answer Steve, I did play the game), yet these five lines propelled him to superstardom back in 2001, when the AYB madness propelled itself in the Lycos 50 for a few weeks. Over there, they define it as the strangest fad in the history of the Internet. And let's not forget the multiple spin-offs... hearing Elvis sing the script of the Zero Wing intro while kicking Zig and taking bases (well, Osama's) was totally priceless.

Okay, so there's not much funnay to say about CATS. In three years a fad can be exploited to the point of overkill. Yes, even the password for the original Metroid.

In the other corner... we have Link. Um, which one? LoZ? LttP? OoT? WW? They're all supposed to be different people, yet just like Mr. Bean and Johnny English, we know the essence is basically the same between all of them. No, not between Bean and Link, dammit!

*imagines Link running around the Stock Pot Inn naked, with only an "Out Of Order" sign to cover the wang and an "Exit" one for the behind*

Guess we all know how this match is going to go down. CATS will take the lead for two minutes, wreaking havoc on the board as usual, then Link will gain control and put CATS in Crispenwah's patented Crappler Crassface and BREAK CATS IN HALF BAH GAWD, because a cyborg with an actual spine would make as much sense as Shadow's plotline in Sonic Heroes.

While I'm thinking of that, this bracket totally looks like the one by company we so much feared. Hyrule... no comment... Crono and Magus are just there for the swerve. Midgar... sad when the strongest non-Square reps are DK and Kirby. Thumbs down. 20XX is totally a "misc." division, except for Frog, Kefka and Tidus. Then there's Chaos. Only ONE Nintendo/Square character in that division (guess what, it's the favorite to take it!). Even beats out last year's West, which only had DK, Yuna and Resetti.

I talked to a friend who doesn't even go to GameFAQS and he recommended picking Crono. I tried to see if they had a favorite character topic on the Chrono Trigger board but there wasn't one and that was useless.

And I think that Crono got anti-votes against Mario both years and decreased in popularity* also, so that's my justification for picking Magus.

I'm still really wary on Jill Vs. Ryu. What is up with Jill and her habit of always being involved in matches that end up costing me three points?

That's the same way that I felt about putting Crash over MC. It comes down to whether you care more about getting the most points or whether you care more about getting the right upsets. The vast majority of people will care about getting the most points. If you are one of them, pick Crono. If you are just looking for upsets that could happen, then by all means put Magus over Crono.

If you looked at charmander's WDF adjusted rankings (not that I believe Sephiroth overperforming to begin with) Sonic still dropped around 3% inbetween 2002 and 2003 as opposed to 6% without. Still dropped, and I don't believe for a second he's remaining consistent between the two.

Ok I am just finalizing my bracket right now and I was wondering if you guys think of the following matchs.

Luigi vs Yoshi- I have Luigi winning but Yoshi is really popular

Crono vs Mario-I have Crono winning but losing to Link the next round.

Shadow vs Tidus- I have shadow winning but the square fanbase has gotten stronger so I might switch it.

Frog vs Liquid Snake- I have Frog winning but losing to Master Chief the next round.

Vyse vs Laharl- I have Vyse winning.
